I found it funny that he really only edits one picture a month and spends more time taking pictures and less time editing. I really like that. His sense of perception of the environment is really incredible, you can tell he's spent a lot of time on the streets.
who was born with digital cameras have tendency of taking more shots so that "at least one is good" or editable. as other comments said, if you were born with film, you gained much more experience on taking e picture right at first attempt. it a slower kind of street photography. great thing
When the camera shot only one picture, it was almost good, when they invented roll film with 12 pictures, only 3 good shots, them 36 only 6 good, now with digital, 1 good in each 100 shots.😂
I love his focus. Shoot first, worry about all the other stuff later. I mean, he really backs up his words. The work is solid. Timeless. Unique. Thanks, Samuel.
Man - this was one of the best interviews I have ever seen. As photographers we are artists and we all know artists have shallow self-esteems, get easily discouraged, often vacillate and many don't even have a good sense of direction. This guy was the opposite of all of this. He does not need anybody to prop him up or encourage him, he is very focused has his routine dialled in and does not get distracted. He also has a long-term goal and knows where he is heading. Also, he is one of the very few contemporaries who has the right take on film. Oh my goodness, I see so many photographers now who think they need to go waste their valuable time and money and dirge back and dabble in film because they are missing out on something. I'm like this guy and Steve McCurry - I was pleased to see the end of film and I never want to go back. As Siegfried says - he does not need film to slow him down or hinder him. I can't wait for the second part of this interview. Very well done Samuel
A slight correction to your conclusion that "as photographers, we are artists". Photography is what you make out of it. Like with guns - it is not the camera that makes art - but the brain of the person who handles the camera. Spending $ thousands for equipment or wearing a "Press" badge is not what creates "visual arts" but the talent of somebody who is able to see the light, and able to capture in a fraction of a second the moment when light highlights lines, shapes, and forms of an object in a way that it amplifies their beauty - and by doing so creates a memory in a person life - that is visual art.
@@BernhardSchwarz-xs8kp I used to work as a photographer, I never felt myself as an artist even though people around told me it was art. Rare photographers are artists, they built something that is new. To me it doesnt matter if it is art or just photographs. It's a language with light and dark
Peter.
Photography goals right here!! I feel like I’m just scratching the surface of what street photography can be. It’s very interesting to see people that have truly mastered the craft.
Like with everything in life. The more talented people are, everything they touch seems to be easy - they are gifted with the talent to focus and zoom in to the core of things and not get distracted by the details.
This is a man who is hooked on the essence of photography, the image, the fun, the curiosity, the self satisfaction !! He isn’t hung up on fame, profit, self image, and the Jewellery of photography the lenses and cameras. This guy is probably the most authentic photographer Samuel has spent time with, so congratulations Samuel. This is one to keep !!
That's what visual art is all about. Most of us handle photography as a craft, some are pursuing the technical aspects of it as a science, but not many reach the level of art.
That was an amazing interview. This guy just schooled a whole lot of us (well, me at least) with a shit ton of no-bullshit knowledge in a field packed with it. Maximum respect for a true craftsman.
Sigfrid is such a good example on why you have to go out to photograph every day. Always been a fan of his sense of composition and light. And also a bit liberating, that he is not limiting himself to only traditional street. Thank you for sharing Samuel.
Well, bullseye this interview😊👍🏼. No big words, really enjoying his gift. And sharing it. It makes you want to go out. Siegfried's preference for digital shooting..no fashionable answer. Like that, down to earth. And man: his work ...😍😍Love at first sight( what is in a name!), Constantly scanning for all the beauty around him," the light on the chair.." Can relate to that. A fortunate man. Great stuff here.
This was hands down one of the better photography related videos on RUclips. As an amateur photograph, who has been doing this for almost 10 months, I have learned a huge amount just by listening to this interview, let alone the inspirational talk. Dont presure yourself, you should enjoy it for the enjoyment itself, not for production, and relax, there are no bad puctures, only really good ones.
What an interesting engaging guy .I concentrated on the subtitles first watch then enjoyed his work the second time around. I would love to see more of these interviews. Thank you Samuel
Now I see why your good, got to admit bloody good interview as well. Definatly worth following even though I don't understand what you a word your saying your pictures show me,
Wow... his gut and timing is incredible! The image of the people in red sitting on the steps with swans. 1person 1 swan then beside the 2 people sitting further away and 2 swans swinging beside them! Just such great vision and timing. Great interview and love his work flow methodology. Cheers
Fascinating how this photographer selects his subjects especially when he has a split second to anticipate and think of the composition in a given evolving situation. A well done interview also.
More fascinating, if you do the same shot no one cares or said it a good picture. Anybody can do it, but he has a name we not. Think about Karl Lagerfelds photigraphy nothing special butyes but: he was Lagerfeld. I see tons of these photos in my university in photo department or the master degrees otoject. I ask myself, damn and with that hey get the degree?
thank you for writing, but that is not true or maybe better I have a different view on this . In my opinion, because I teach this in workshops that's why I know it, it has nothing to do with skills etc. -- it is more discipline and time and mentorship etc. .. if you like photography , music or painting you can develop very fast .. but it is 99% transpiration and 1 % inspiration -( Edison) . I started with 40 years to photograph before that time, I have nothing to do with art or photography .
Really enjoyed Mr Hansons wisdom, experience and guidance about his photographic journey. Really motivating and inspirational. 2023 will be an awesome time for street photography. Cheers😎✌🏼
Vielen Dank für das großartige Interview!! Fotografieren statt Bildbearbeitung, toll. Freue mich auf Fortsetzung mit Siegfried Hansen Gruß Raule/ Braunschweig
So genail!
His real talent is not taking photos. He has the Composition Perk. The hability to recognice in his surroundings what´s worth to take a picture of, just walking nearby. This implies the superpower to "see more" that most of the people.

Thank you for this excellent interview/video and for introducing me to Siegfried Hansen! I really enjoyed his thoughts on photography and a photographic career, including his embrace of digital photography.
Wow, his photos are really something. Didn't know about him before stumbling upon this video. Also: great interview with interesting questions! Thanks!
"I try to spend as little time as possible on the screen. I prefer to be outside shooting." This 100x. It blows my mind that photographers just lean on dynamic range and raw, shoot whatever, then spend hours in Lightroom. I get that it's necessary workflow in some fields... but it's *so much* more fun to art direct reality itself. Imagine if someone who spends their time 50/50 shooting/editing... swapped instead to 90/10. That's a mountain of time shooting and growing with composition, field IQ, muscle memory, fundamental knowledge, etc, etc. As opposed to a mountain of time fiddling with sliders better.
"Der nett-Check"…herrlich 😂 sehr inspirierende Arbeiten! Die Technik mag noch so fortgeschritten und gut sein, aber dieses Auge für den Moment und fürs Detail kann keine Technik der Welt ersetzen für wirklich gute und aussagekräftige Bilder. 👍🏼
Great interview and insight into the mind of an exceptional photographer. The dedication he puts in is what we all learn about, but he personifies so much when he says things like 'after 20 years, I never doubt I'll get a bad photo as that is what the training has been all about'. Super insight. Thank you. I've gotten way too distracted with videos from 'gear boys' these days and need to come back to the art of the craft.
Notice the lack of completely pointless shots of total strangers? God, I don't know if there's anything I hate more in photography than RUclips street photographers who just aimlessly shoot pedestrians and call that "capturing life in its everyday form." There so much more to street photography, as this video here beautifully shows.
Thank you very much for the Spanish translation! Hopefully from now on you can translate other videos into Spanish! I love your channel! very good work !!
It's about discovering the difference between seeing and looking. It's not what camera brand you have. It would not be wrong to say that "Siegfried" is in the nirvana of this business.🙌
Samuel, thank you for making this! You can tell that he's put in the work and is really in tune with his craft. I quite enjoy his perspective on editing. I think he said he has no long-term goal (except making photographs) and doesn't know where he's going.
He's an artist, not a careerist.
he is an artist, im a photographer, that's a big difference
But, who pays for his work ? He must have familly money or what ?
