    The price I mentioned in the video was updated (it was changed after I made the video). Official price for the X-E4 is currently 849$! Just wanted to correct that in case you were wondering :) Also, EVF resolution is NOT identical to X100V. It is slightly lower resolution. I had no info about the specs at the time of the unboxing. For me, the flip up/out/down screen is extremely useful for three situations:
    1) Low close up shots of (for example) plants/fungi and really anything that would require a close to the ground POV that would otherwise require the photographer to prostrate themselves belly down ...in public!
    2) "Shooting from the hip" with the screen flipped out facing up for less intrusive street photography ...and
    3) Photography when in a crowd, especially if you are short like I am. Screen flipped out but facing down, so you can hold the camera high up at arm's length and see over the crowd, almost like a periscope.
    Great review, I bought one of these a year or so ago.

    Thank you Samuel for that great review. I was briefly contemplating selling my X100F and X-T2 and getting this one instead. Until I watched your video. I was still rather convinced until you hinted on the missing manual focus switch. Thank you for bringing this up! That officially kills it for me. I'm using it all the time. Would have been easy for Fuji to keep it just as it was on the X-E3 and on basically all other major cameras. I guess it got sacrificed for a sleek design just like even the little "grip bump" which means you always have to use the accessory making it a bit more bulky at the bottom. Two rather sad decisions on an otherwise amazing camera. Kind of bums me out cause I was looking forward to this.

    The clean, flat front certainly looks amazing but I do think it's a bit of a shame they removed the S/C/M switch.
    Still, a tilt screen is one of the few things I miss on my X-E3.
    Also those wide strap lugs look niice, and the angular corners remind me a bit of old Canon screwmount rangefinders, or the Nikon F. Fuji really outdid themselves, they keep making more and more beautiful cameras.

    You had the same complaint - lack of dedicated button to switch between LCD, EVF, etc - with the X100V as well. I agree, I wish there was a dedicated button like on the XH1. But, alternatively, you can assign a custom button to this function. On my X100V I have assigned the little custom button next to the shutter to the display mode switch function. FYI!

    This is an awesome review !
    I’d love to pick your brain on the following…
    I’m having a hard time with deciding on a new Fuji body, struggling with GAS, but also feeling like I want a new and/or third body.
    Right now I’m shooting on an XT3 and an X100V. Love both. I shoot studio portraits and headshots, personal branding photos and the occasional family session. I used to shoot engagements and weddings, but now it’s almost entirely portrait work.
    I have fallen in love with the rangefinder style of the X100V, and I am eyeing the XPRO 3 and XE4.
    I’m having a hard time deciding if I should sell my XT3, and get an XPRO 3, keep the XT3 and get an XE4, or just wait and save for the XPRO3 and have three cameras (XT3, XPRO & X100).
    I’ve also considered the XT4, but I don’t do video, don’t care about IBIS and I just don’t see the upgrade.
    I like to work very minimalist, and I only have a handful of lenses.
    I would love your thoughts as to what you would do in my shoes.
    I think I’m also feeling kind of burnt out and bored and there’s something about the x100 that just makes me want to shoot more, which is why I’m leaning towards the rangefinder minimalism found in the XE4 and XPRO series. I want the camera to get out of my way, and my work is about connection, simplicity and closeness. Even in the studio, I keep one eye open. I am finding myself shooting in studio with the X100! Would you sell the XT3 and get the XPRO, keep it and go XE4, or just wait and save and get the XPRO as a third?
    I think there is some piece of me that’s just scared of going entirely rangefinder, considering I’m doing studio for portraits… But maybe that’s just a simple learning curve. And if I sell my XT3 I could probably afford to get another lens, although I’m pretty happy with my combination of 23, 35 and 56.
    If the focus on the XE4 is as good as the XT3, or better, I’m in. Is it really that fast? Is the XE4 comparable to XT3 in terms of IQ, ability to work with strobes and speed?

  • @MikeFilancPhotography
    @MikeFilancPhotography 3 года назад +9

    I personally like the minimalist design language Fuji has adapted starting with the X100V! I have to admit I like how similar this camera looks to an X100 now only with the added functionality of an interchangeable lens mount. I bought my X100V thinking I’d shoot B-Roll with it for my channel and maybe a little A-Roll from time to time. I have to say after trying it out, the lack of a dedicated headphone jack is frustrating. Also Fujifilm really needs to improve their manual focusing experience to round out the otherwise very tactile and pleasing shooting experience. I don’t think it’s an accident you chose a Samyang lens as your primary video lens over a Fujinon. 🙃

    • @SamuelStreetlife
      @SamuelStreetlife  3 года назад +2

      Good observation skills :D I do like focusing manual for video. I personally don't mind not having a headphone jack. My X-H1 doesn't have one too and I got so good at reading the audio levels that I never have any issues. But it would be nice to have of course. You can use a USB to headphone jack adapter with the X-E4 though.

The missing AF/MF/CF-switch hurts … but on the other hand: How often do i really use it? And would i miss it when my X-H1 did not has it? I would say you have to be fine with some compromises and in real life the handicap is okay and you can find a workflow for this. All in all an interesting cam! Thanks for the content ✊

    Ha. I watched Kai's video just before yours so there you go 😉.
    Always enjoy your vids.
    Something you said triggered a flow of thought (also I'm not taking a swipe at anyone nor trying to start a debate - disclaimer over)... I find it funny how we (humans) often need to categorise (primarily for marketing/promotion) things but give those things unapt nomenclature. Some photographers you've interviewed in the past have discussed this too.
    (It's like many music genres which were invented by the record industry to better market music sales. Steam punk is one which isn't punk but references cyberpunk which is a subcategory of punk, but steampunk still retains punk in the name).
    Street photography needing people to be a photograph of the street. I understand the genre/style is meant to be a candid document of the human element of the ✌️street✌️ but why call it "street" when it is about the human element and is the artificial street not human element enough? I think people get hung up on it and I don't think it's a problem to document evidence of human presence but absent of actual humans, even if the manmade environment is the evidence (the street) and call it street photography... and keeping in line with popular definition of "street ", and if needing to distinguish it from urban landscape or architectural where the focus could be popularly defined to represent the urban environment itself or architecture as the name suggests, I don't see why documenting/capturing the same environment where the focus is to draw attention the absence of people in a normally bustling environment would also constitute as Street despite not quite fitting the popular purist definition.
    I guess that was a long-winded way of saying I think it's fine for you (anyone) to take a photo of the street documenting the absence of people or even plain urban environment and still call it Street - COVID/post apocalyptic Street. Maybe we should be calling it something that alludes to the human element if it is a requirement for the style - but I guess urban social documentary photography doesn't market as well.
    Ok stream of consciousness over.

    Hmm, to be honest I think some of my favorite things from the X-E1 are gone in this generation, I liked the buttons on the rear, I liked the feel of the old grip (probably similar with the accessory grip, I know), and I also am a fan of the C/S/M focus selector switch. That said, the tilt screen would probably be great, and who am I to complain about missing buttons? I just got a Leica TL2 with no buttons at all... but hey, it was cheap :)

    Honestly, they could have keep the focus selection mode in front and the dial behind, moving the joystick in a little higher position, add weather sealing and increase the viewfinder size a little.
    I didn't expect IBIS on this model, but was expecting at least to get WR.
    And even worse, now it lost so many key features, like the dial behind and the focus mode selector.
    Those key features + the new 27mm pancake, made me think into switch from my sony A6000 into Fuji... But now I am not that sure about the switch
    I think, I will wait and see what Sony gonna do with Aps-c, because seems like they only using the same old body and sensor time after time, and only changing theyr firmware for a better focusing one in new models, while theyr full frame lines get more and more love in each release and the treatment difference between Aps-c and full frame keeps increasing.

    I'm looking into buying a camera for street photography and I'm torn between Fujifilm X-E4 and the Ricoh GR III.
    How is the X-E4 compared to the Ricoh GR III?
    Which JPEGs do you prefer more, the X-E4 (Fujifilm) or the Ricoh GR III?
    Also being both a Fujifilm and Ricoh camera user, which has given you less technical problems?
    I've heard of Ricoh's dust problem and sticky lens which has made me nervous about the system but from what I've seen the images are beautiful
    If you could give me your perspective, I'd really appreciate it :) Thank you

    Ya your thoughts about one camera and two lens set up was exaclty what I was thinking too. Seems smart. And if you have to do any walking shots I suppose you can use a phone, or a small gimbal because it is so little and light. Really actually has me considering it. I just sold my x100v too primarily due to lack of any ibis. But you know sometimes I like to use old manual lenses too which would work too well without ibis. I wish to God Fuji would just give us some digital stabe st the very least to help with micro jitters. Such a simple solution.

      Maaaybe they can add digital IS with firmware? Or maybe they thought that IBIS is too modern and we used to use old manual lenses without IBIS for decades so... 😅 but once you experienced IBIS you don't want to go back.

    I dont know why they did it smaller then X-E2 starting from X-E3 ... I think X-E2 was perfect size!! still having and enjoying it! And I see that mII version of 27mm is still having this "breathing" focus construction... didnt like it much with their first version and sold the lens and kept 18mm instead - way more comfortable to use to my test. I think as GR user you will like it too!! Its just a tiny bigger then 27mm but works faster and quieter even on my old X-E2 and with newer bodies it will be a beast! )))

    A fantastic review covering all aspects of the E4. I'm looking for a replacement for my A6000 and my requirement is to have a compact camera that I can use for videos and casual photography. Any reason I should overlook the S10 for the E4? Apart from, of course, the stunning, compact design.

      The X-S10 has IBIS for your videos. If you are happy with the controls and size then I can't see a reason to get the X-E4 if you are not into the rangefinder looks.

    • @homesavvytech
      @homesavvytech 3 года назад

      @@fredbloggs545 Thanks for your response. The only reason I'm strongly in favour of the E4 is design and styling. Additionally, the prospect of taking it along with the 28mm/23mm lenses without much of a hassle is a big influence. BTW, most of my videos will be indoors and a good percentage of the footage using a tripod. Does this change your recommendation?

      The X-E4 with 27mm f/2.8 pancake makes it like the X100V in size and weight. I prefer the EVF position rangefinder style on the X-E models which is why I have an X-E3 and a 4 is on pre-order :)
      You have presumably looked at the small X-T30 and the X-T4?
      If using autofocus take note that some lenses are noisy on video.
      Watch out for the tripod screw scratching the bottom of the camera. Use a rubber washer on the tripod thread or something to protect the camera.

    Hi Samuel, great camera review as always! Samuel I know you actually touched on this point in your review, but I have concerns about the EVF! on the XE4, is the evf smaller then the evf on my Fuji X100T, or is it the same size? if it is better, then that would be fantastic! but is it not so good Samuel? Thank you for your help!

    • @SamuelStreetlife
      @SamuelStreetlife  3 года назад +1

      I did a quick google search and the X100T has a 0.5x magnification viewfinder and the X-E4 is 0.65x. So you get a little bigger viewfinder. But the resolution is the same. Personally I find the EVF to be good enough and totally usuable. The LCD screen is super sharp though so I am using the screen more than the EVF. But I have no complaints about the EVF. Bigger and sharper would be nice but than I would by the Xpro3 or X100V instead.
