    Hi Andrew, great to see another of these videos from you and thanks for putting your own unique spin on things as always. I’m an Fuji X Weekly subscriber too, there’s so much work goes into what Richie does and I’m glad to see you linking with him. You know what made me smile the most here? Seeing how your kids are growing, I love when you include them in what you do ♥️📷😁

    Totally agree on the balance. I use 50-140 on my XE4 and it is fine as well. It is very nice compact camera that is very enjoyable. I am happy that Fuji doesn't differentiate the main sensor by model so that I don't have to force myself to get a bigger body for better sensor - I am done with bigger body when I ditched Canon DSRL couple of years ago after using it for almost 20 years.

    Enjoyable as always, Andrew. Love your passion for these things. CC was always my one and only film sim. Your take on ISO being your primary exposure adjuster is very interesting. I’m in the set it and leave it camp, but as you say, whatever works for us. Guess it depends on what you shoot too. Not so much the noise (after all Fujis have good noise grain anyway) I’ve always been concerned with loss of DR and colour as ISO increases - hence why it’s always been my last thing to compensate. But for documentary, street style, higher contrast shooting these things are less of a concern. So glad you haven’t given up on the photography vids completely.

  • @-grey
    @-grey 3 года назад +26

    Here's why I think the smaller battery is not a disadvantage:
    Extra batteries are easy to bring, and swap in like the magazine in a handgun. I'd rather have a set of 5 or 6 batteries in my pouch pack waiting to go, than have the extra weight of a larger bulkier camera in my hand all day. If I can offset some of that bulk elsewhere for the caveat of having to reload every few hours, then I'd take the lesser wrist strain any day. I like to keep my cameras in my hand, so every extra gram matters. So to me it's a non-issue. Unless I'm doing hours of a locked off time-lapse in the freezing night or something, but at that point get a cabled dummy battery hooked up to a larger power source, since you're going to be hanging around for a while.
    That's my two cents anyway. ✌️

      The W-126s is from 2016, battery technology has evolved. I believe they would be able to increase capacity by 30% while maintaining the same size. I find It mildly infuriating having to bring a bag when ever I need more than one spare battery.

    • @-grey
      @-grey 3 года назад +2

      @@arvidjohansson3120 I always have a little hip pouch for my camera anyway, but the batteries are no bigger than my car key fob. I could stack a couple in a pocket if I needed to. It would be like bringing a bag for a pack of gum.

    • @shuttersounds__jpg
      @shuttersounds__jpg 3 года назад +1

      I mean you’re adding $200ish more to the price of the camera by carrying 5-6 more batteries. I think the next big step from Fuji is better battery life to only carry one maybe just another back up one in your pocket

    • @-grey
      @-grey 3 года назад

      @@shuttersounds__jpg the bigger batteries don't equal double the juice. I'd still end up carrying 3-4 rather than 5-6, plus they'd be more expensive, because of the new redesign.
      Also, more batteries means if one drains in camera because of cold weather or something, the others in the bag can keep me shooting longer, because they were warm.

    • @shuttersounds__jpg
      @shuttersounds__jpg 3 года назад +1

      @@-grey well in 99% of cases a bigger battery does mean longer usage time. I’ve never seen a modern bigger camera battery not outperform a smaller camera battery ( except those a6000 series camera batteries). If Fuji or any other brand that produces high end apsc camera improves battery while keeping somewhat the same features per cost they will be king

    • @nicka.9073
      @nicka.9073 3 года назад +1

      Actually your X30's sensor is a bit smaller than 1", so if you decide to go APS-C you'll really appreciate the increase in resolving power and the flexibility it allows not to mention DR, etc. BTW, I still have my X30 as well. What a great camera! I won't compare to my current Fuji's as it's not very fair to do so, but for an all in one package it did (does) a fantastic job.

    For me, the ONLY failing of the X-E4 is the stock ergonomics and the unprotected LCD ribbon. I put a sticky front grip on it (FlipBack G4 specifically) and a thumbrest in the hot shoe (Hoage X100V rest or LM-XE3 both fit excellently).
    Other than that, it is the Fuji camera that I've been waiting for since I had my first X-E2 and X-T1 bodies and thought "the X-E2 would be PERFECT IF they just put the X-T1 flip LCD on it!"
    I feed my family with my cameras and I've sold my X100V, my X-PRO3, X-E2 and X-E3 and now am super happy with an X-T30 and two X-E4 bodies. (They are only slightly larger than my very first Fuji X...the X20!) I shoot mostly Aperture Priority. Always AutoISO up to 12800 min shutter set to 1/40....usually -1EV and always RAW. The aperture ring on my lenses controls my key choice, well more than enough buttons and dials left to quickly access anything else. If I'm mounting a MF lens, I just take the time to set the MSC choice to M (have to chose the focal length in the menu anyhow when 'shooting without lens.' If I've got an AF lens on, it's set to AF-S.
    I've had 18 of the Fuji X Bodies since switching completely from Nikon in 2014. Still have 6. I'm OK now if they never make another new body as long as I can always pick up an X-E4 and put my XF35/1.4 or XF10-24/4 on it. :)
    Good to see more Fuji Camera content from you. Even when we slightly disagree. Keep doing good and well.

    Fuji X weekly. Pay for it. It’s totally worth it. Love it.
    I got an XT1. Love the way the sensor looks and it’s only 16 mp. Works for what I shoot. I was thinking of an XT2 but was afraid of too clinical sharpness happening. I’m use to shooting Delta 100 in my film rangefinders and the XT1 mimics that.

    Vey nice review, I just don't share how you feel about the lack of ISO dial and how many other photographers complain about these kind of details. To me these kind of things are just sort of implicit if you are getting such a small camera body. I know you are aware of that cause you are a very smart and measured photographer and reviewer and you even mention it somehow in your review but I don't know... I just bothers me when people complain about these kind of things, had to say it. Still I get these kind of complaints or feedback are useful for camera designers in their way to perfection but man we have so many close-to-perfection tools nowadays, we have had them for decades. Still, thanks for sharing and those are lovely and great images as always.

    I totally concur with changing ISO and in fact I'm a huge supporter of using the Auto ISO settings on Fujifilm Cameras. Auto ISO based on high and low value + shutter speed is how I roll and being able to store 3 different Auto ISO settings that are easy to swap mid session makes my life super easy when doing events, weddings and street photography. It allows me to focus on capturing the moment and approach each shot creatively. In fact I think the ISO dial needs to be expanded to include the 3 Auto ISO settings you can make without having to also use a control dial.

    Hello Andrew, thank you for your efforts, and I value your opinions. Coming from the Fuji X100F, I just purchased the EX4. However, I don't miss the dedicated ISO dial, as I found it difficult to read the small numbers on the dial, especially under lower lighting. It slowed me down. So, I used the Auto ISO Ranges, setting my maximum ISO values there, and not worrying about the noise. It is actually faster to work this way. And as you stated, the low noise quality of the sensors has helped to mitigate the slight quality loss in the higher ISO's. You value the ISO dial experience, I get that; me, not so much. And that little focus dial on the front: too fiddly for me. I don't trust my muscle memory, I need to actually see where that dial is pointing, requiring me to look at the front of the camera, so I find the Q menu is where I want to go. Anyway, thank you again for sharing your experience.

    Found the ISO easy to access via the top button. To ensure sharp images, I was pleased to see the capability to fix the minimum shutter speed in the auto-ISO ´presets´, which I have arranged for different lighting situations. If time allows for greater control, I will switch off auto ISO to my needs. The camera grows on you with use and becomes a breeze to use, especially if you're not switching from one Fuji camera to another constantly. I also use Sony and was surprised that my A7iii isn't as malleable as the Fujifilm when it came to the capability to set the minimum shutter speed for imaging in auto ISO mode.

XE4 with 27mm is compact but seems a definite quality step down from x100v and XT2 is going great with all other lens where XE4 size advantage will be negated due to the larger lenses anyway. Flip touch screen is the big difference. You won't notice the AF much unless you shoot video and need Eye tracking. Honesty, the X-T2 is still top of the line in terms of image quality, it is slightly better in low light having 24mp, and the only thing I miss on mine is not being able to take flip screen selfies with my gf, and not being able to touch to focus/shoot on the street. Outside of that the upgrades are so minor.

    You do have a dedicated ISO dial on the x-e4, it's called the "exposure compensation dial." With ISO set to "automatic," and aperture and shutter speed on "manual," your compensation dial will allow you to adjust your ISO. Of course, it does not allow you complete access to all ISO values, but it does give you + or - 3-stops, which for most situations will be enough to compensate for changes in lighting conditions.

    About ISO-dial. To me X-E4 has a better solution to this than many other Fuji cameras. Having it on the front dial it's instantly available and fast to change. Working with fixed aperture and shutter speed I don't need to chang the shutter speed in small steps. I change my ISO instead. With noise reduction available today ISO is hardly an issue anymore. I shot some images at 12800 and and they were clean and smooth after a run through in LR ai noise reduction.

    The no back dial is such a shame IMO for how i use my camera. I got the X100v as my first fuji and i have the ISO on one dial and the shutter speed on the other and it works great for my style of shooting as I prefer full manual and not auto ISO.
    But I'm kinda certain you can push the front dial in to change the setting? therefore you can have SS on the front dial and then when you want to change iso you push it in to change back and forth is that correct? If so i feel like i'll get by fine and i'm actually gonna buy one of these cause i want to try different lenses.

    i have to agree with everything you've said
    i'm an XE loyalist and i have both the XE1 and the XE2 (and an XT10)
    my biggest problem of this camera is the lack of back dial.
    i can tolerate the lack of buttons. the XE3 buttons are already perfect. they just had to mess it up
    i use vintage manual lenses 80% of the time, but i can tolerate the lack of SCM switch
    what i can't tolerate is the lack of the back command dial.
    i shoot exclusively in manual. i never shoot in auto whatever. so the back dial is very important for me because of the way i shoot; back dial controls the shutter speed (the SS dial is always on T) so my thumb rests there all the time, then, the front dial is ISO (on the xt10. the xe1 and xe2 doesn't have a front dial). the back dial also doubles as my focus check (because, again, i'm mostly on vintage manual lenses)

      maybe that works for you, but for some, it doesn't. having the back dial work as SS and focus check works because it's intuitive. you don't need to take your shutter finger off the release, while your thumb controls the SS and focus check
