So be strong and prove yourself a man. 3And keep the charge of the LORD your God to walk in His ways and to keep His statutes, commandments, ordinances, and decrees, as is written in the Law of Moses, so that you may prosper in all you do and wherever you turn, 4and so that the LORD may fulfill His promise to me: ‘If your descendants take heed to walk faithfully before Me with all their heart and soul, you will never fail to have a man on the throne of Israel.’

One of the problems with this subject is that we seem to have lost our ability to appreciate that masculinity, men come in a variety personality types. There’s this reverence for the Lord and His holy word. There’s power in the pastor’s sermons and they are tough to listen to. It’s good to get spiritually roughed up every so often. This is a fantastic overview of the Muscular Christianity movement. My masters thesis to earn an MA in History was about the foundations of Muscular Christianity and what Todd discusses here about the role of industrialization and "overcivilization" is prevalent throughout the literature. Clifford Putney's work that Todd references is the seminal work on MC. My research, however, demonstrates that the origins of MC may have actually begun a little earlier with the mobilization for the Civil War. Through an analysis of sermons delivered in various Northern churches, I found that several ministers were already preaching messages about manliness and patriotic duty. Henry Ward Beecher and Horace Bushnell, I would argue, were two of the first Muscular Christian ministers.
Another interesting thing that I discovered in my research is how throughout the late 1800s, images and descriptions of Jesus transformed from soft and angelic to rugged and masculine.

Really good. And the man conversing with the other about nail polish - had some great things to say. Courageous - Christlike manhood must be cultivated especially in light of what passes for manhood today. But it’s not a stretch to say wearing nail polish is a sin.
    Deuteronomy 22:5
A woman shall not wear man’s clothing, nor shall a man put on a woman’s clothing; for whoever does these things is an abomination to Yahweh your God.
Nail polish is dressing like a woman.
    An abomination is aggravated sin.
Fearlessly speaking truth to the world is Christlike courage.
“Be watchful, stand firm in the faith, act like men, be strong. Let all that you do be done in love.”

Sorry, but Chivalry was the foundation that let the feminist movement in. Chivalry is not is a Christian concept - it is about pleasing your lady - even over God. The reason women outnumbered men in church was because of their nurturing personalities. The natural inclination for teenagers and people in their 20's to walk away from church was already happening in the early 1900's. After marriage, once children were born, women would begin to feel the urge to attend church again for the sake of her children. Men were not as motivated. Therefore, church leaders began to adjust the the church environment in order to encourage wifely attendance, hoping that it would encourage the husbands to attend as well. This environment necessitated a more emotional charged environment prioritizing what made people feel good. They also started to promote an equalization of the roles in the household.

And being soft like that actually always came pretty naturally to me and I got rewarded for being like that, and I liked it and often prided myself on being like that and looked down on other boys that were more rough and all with each other as something bad and violent and baffling to me. And that still affects who I am to this day, unfortunately; while ideologically and rationally I grew out of that long ago and think raising boys like that is very bad for them, in terms of manliness I've never yet been truly able to reverse the feminine stunting from being raised like that even if I try, regardless of how many rational arguments I can raise against it as to why it's bad and wrong for boys.
Being soft like this has admittedly led to almost everyone being fond of me and viewing me as like "the sweetest person ever" (their words, not mine), sure, so there's that, but it also has led to me being quite lacking in many ways and not who I should be as a man; personality- and tendencies-wise I'd almost say I'm kind of androgynous, though thankfully still leaning masculine, but I'm definitely not what one would describe as particularly "manly." Sure, I'm still way better in that regard than many others these days, as I've never experienced any "gender confusion" or any of that crap going on now whatsoever and even when growing up like this you couldn't pay me to wear dresses or anything "girly," so that's something to be thankful for, but still, it definitely stunted my proper masculine growth and development. I am still young and hoping I can still reverse more of the effects than I currently have, but still, it's not a good place to start throughout your formative years and being like this in the first place is exactly what makes trying to reverse it so hard to do.

Why not have just a 'ugh' swole masculinity ?
    Thats a good goal.
God made us men, self awareness is built into us, via the garden because He saw that we long for love and gentleness.
Lets not stop growth by waving a nagging school marm finger reminding us to be nice before we've even been told we have permission to be masculine.
Jesus wasn't nice, he was honest.
    Through that comes self awareness.
The heart of a man is like deep waters.
We create the best poetry, compose the greatest classical symphonies and paintings that envoke beauty. We dont need to be told to be loving, that is already designed in us, but we need to be reminded and not afraid to get fired, speak up and never stop fighting.

And even though Santa isn't real, it's clear, based on many interpretations of the Santa mythology, that Santa, although jolly and polite, has some scathing rebukes for naughty children. He either gives them coal or, in some interpretations, nothing.
Never anger a nice person. You never know how what combat abilities some of the nicest people have.
Related to this, God may be longsuffering, but even his patience has its limits. And merciful he may be, if he's angry... You'd better hope... *He ain't angry at you.*

Men in general, in the gut, in their spirit, know they need to be masculine. But they need to be careful lest they fall into machismo - a hyper masculinity which over stresses definite negative traits such as abusing women. Not everybody can walk that tightrope. I've never seen Andrew Tate's vids but from what I understand he just speaks for men's rights and advises men to not roll over and play dead for the whims of the women they meet. 150 years ago, what you describe as 'hyper masculinity' was probably more the norm. What may have checked it was the social graces that were taught to most people at that time -- people were generally raised to respect others, and there was a way of interacting with others that showed a certain amount of respect, and such men who observed those social graces were respected for it, not denigrated as wimps or simps. Etiquette is an example of this. Even poor people learned etiquette. And things like etiquette helped hold the 'hyper masculinity' in check. However, social graces like etiquette no longer are taught, or exist. Those all went into the trashcan along with what was left of chivalry.

Men worked in factories for 12-18 hour days in what would now be considered unsafe conditions; they worked in lumbermills and sawmills (where guys could get maimed or killed); they worked, like my ancestors did, in the iron mines and coal mines where conditions were harsh. They worked 12-18 days every day in the hot sun, farming, or maybe ranching. Men were different back then. If you read some letters or books on the caliber of men (good and bad) during the US Civil War you'll see a completely different attitude towards life than what you see now. Read some history about it. And masculinity does not = abusers. Tate speaks out for a lot of people. Don't like him? Don't watch him. I don't.

    • @chriscampbell9191
      @chriscampbell9191 Месяц назад

@@Mr.Riojas Oh, I do know what "machismo" is. The definition in the dictionary (Merriam-Webster's, 11th edition): "A strong sense of masculine pride". American Heritage adds the phrase "including the domination of women." Which can mean anything, depending on who is using the term. Betty Friedan equated the old order of men working at the factory, being leaders in the home and in society, and women raising the kids at home as a form of domination of women, and Friedan also considered the old order as a form of abuse. Definitions often depend on who is using them. What you think is "masculine" the guy down the street might say is "toxic".
As for 150 years ago, men only treated women with more respect back then because of etiquette and social graces, which were taught to children by their parents and grandparents, and those social graces and etiquette were also taught in schools. If any of them are taught today, they are definitely not taught the way they were when my grandfather was in school. Today, young men and boys are not taught to "lead" women. They are taught that men and women are equal. Which they actually are now. We live in the age of equality. It's a different time, a different century.

I'm not bragging, but it humbles me how much of the Masculinity you're talking about here Jesus gave to me, because I earnestly sought Him. Physically, I was a large, powerful man (6'3", 280lbs). I was confident, but not tyrannical, I knew if I were to marry, I was supposed to rule, but as a Servant-Leader & not to compromise when it came to the Truth.
However, my First Great Love in the early 1990's (I'm 53), was scared because as she told me decades later- 'The Veil Between You and God was so thin, I didn't know how to handle it.' So, she kept flip-flopping between me & her old boyfriend, until I finally had to tell her that while I still loved her, I could not trust her. That ended that relationship.
My Second Great Love in the mid 1990's, was an Ardent Feminist (less charitably I could call her, 'Rabid'), back when I still believed the lie it was about Equality. Because I loved Truth more than her Feelings, she left me, despite God stepping in, in a Blatantly Supernatural Way to offer her correction. She refused that correction & then went completely into Paganism. What I went through with her was a Microcosm of what the entire West is going through now.
My Third Great Love, I met in the late 2007's. And, after vetting her (and her faith) to the point of Paranoia, she finally seemed to be 'perfect' (in a human sense, not ACTUALLY perfect) and we married at the end of 2008.
However, the Impossible Situation, the Nightmare, started instantly, on our wedding night. I had been fighting Chronic Pain due to an unknown cause (a half-dozen doctors in the 90's could not find it), since 1993. My Wife told me before we married, that she could handle it, she loved me. But, whatever was wrong with me, was clearly neurological, as when it came to the bedroom, my body was one step above dead. No passion, no desire could change it, it was like being a car with a broken transmission.
I struggled to the point of a breakdown, but I couldn't get close to what she wanted. In 2014, she said I had 'betrayed' her, and ended all intimacy between us. For some reason, she did not divorce me then, and that had nothing to do with Love. I once asked her if she ever felt like Job's Wife, who told him to- 'Curse God and Die.' Her exact response was- 'I would never say anything THAT cruel to you.'
Now that I am almost totally disabled, she is finally divorcing me. Worse than that however, in her resentment and anger, she has swallowed every Cultural Marxist lie, now saying that Transgenderism, Same-Sex relationships & all of that is perfectly fine. Worst of all, she has said that it was unfair of God to create us unable to make our own Moral Laws and then punish us for not following His. Essentially, she threw the lie of the Serpent in my face, approvingly.
I have kept the Faith, I have not lost Hope and I strive to live in Love, but I am so terrified for her, I can hardly wrap my mind & heart around the idea.

I want to know Jesus as the Lion, the Lord, the Great King. I want to hear about His authority and power as well as His gentleness and kindness.
I love that Jesus isn't a pushover; that He didn't chase after the rich young ruler or those disciples who walked away from Him because His hard sayings offended them -- and, in fact, challenged the rest with their thoughts of leaving.
I love to read the OT with the wars and victories and God's swift wrath against disobedience!
But, then, I would love these things because of who my earthly father was: a long-distance trucker with a tough Irish skin who didn't suffer fools gladly!

Well, I can say there has been a hostility to men who joined the military during the 50s and through 80s by the Church, however, there has been an inverse and a near idolization of Service members which is a swing in the wrong direction. As I was a soldier during the 90s and 2000s I didn't have any of the hostility, but my father saw that in the Church when he joined in the 60s all the way through until it was turned around in the 90s. The pacifist movement did not help the Church at all and helped instill some of this feminization of men.

Yes, Jesus loves the meek and the kind-hearted, but meek weak. Kindness weak.
Meekness is about controlling the power you have, so it can be used at the appropriate time and circumstance. A good synonym for meek would be humility, which was one of the most desirable traits in the knights of old. The Code of Chivalry was designed to teach warlike men how to control their violent talents and put them in service of those who are weak and defenseless.
Kindness is shown by using our strengths to help those in need. To bear up under tough circumstances. Anyone can be kind when life is easy and there's plenty to go around. But it takes true kindness for a man to say, "I will toil as hard as I must so that my family may prosper."

Is that not the same sexist nonsense behind gender ideology? In fact, it IS gender ideology, you've gone full circle.

No, everyone should do everything Jesus says. Yet "Christians" are now forbidding people from doing so in the name of preserving gender roles! Also, "Biblical masculinity/feminity" is a completely made-up concept; that it even exists is a false presumption you're sneaking in.
    3. You should remove "Christian" from the title, because all your sources are random quotes from around the 20th century which have nothing to do with Christianity beyond the mere observation that women attend church more than men.
