Nice video! I have been using Big Sur since WWDC 2020, overall I like the new design for the most part. The things I would change is the close button set padding issue, that you pointed out. I didn’t even notice it until you said something. The Menu Bar transparency and spacing with Menu Bar app icons is an issue and hope these issues get’s fixed. Control Center I don’t care what it looks like, I am never in there anyhow. I either use the Touch Bar or the keyboard connected to my MacBook Pro to change most of these settings. The Icon Set Sucks! That battery icon has to go before the release. I hate even looking at the battery setting because of that battery icon. I really wonder what Apple design team was thinking about with this icon Set. After watching some of the interview with Mr. Federighi after WWDC 2020, I wouldn’t hold you breath for the icon set to be fixed before release. Mr. Federighi stated that Apple likes the new design changes. He also stated that after a while of using it the icon set won’t be noticeable as they are today. Which in some ways he might be right, but wrong in many other ways. I notice that I don’t go into Launchpad all that much today. I find myself using command+space to load an application, so I don’t have to look at the new icon set. Compatibility I have two applications that don’t work in Big Sur. Which are Visual Studio & Inkscape both of these applications can run on my Windows machine. The fact I have a Windows computer I can remote into this doesn’t bother me all that much. If you don’t have a Windows computer this might become an issue. All the rest of my applications don’t have an issue with Big Sur. I am highly invested in the Apple ecosystem and find most of the stock applications efficient to get my work done. I do believe even with the design issue we don’t like, Big Sur will become a better operating system than Catalina was. I find it more responsive on my new MacBook Pro 2020 version than Catalina was. I believe Big Sur new user interface changes brings it into a more modern operating system. With dialogs/panels coming to the center of the application window, instead of the top. This is one of the biggest feature I like about Big Sur. For the people that don’t know, the battery percentage has moved to the Dock & Menu Bar settings if you want to enable this feature.
8:01 you Bring up a point about the spacing of the close, minimize and maximize buttons but if you look at them they are in a perfect line in line with each other through all your windows that you opened, I think Apple is going for the clean line luck not consistent spacing
Just comes across as change for change sake with zero input from what users would find useful with focus on clever graphical effects - the top bar being a classic example. Would much rather have bug fixes for Catalina. If I want an iPad like experience- well I would buy and iPad.
Dave Garratt Yes, I find that the vast majority of OS and major application revisions are superficial UI changes to create the illusion of newness with just enough performance improvement, or new features, to provide some modicum of justification for updating. Examples being, change the font, color, location, switch from 3D to 2D icons - or vice versa, move menus from one side of the screen to the other, etc. In this case I hope such UI revisions really are to make transitioning between MacOS and iOS more seamless.
I don't like the idea of simplifying a computer to the level of an iPad, but I've been using the beta and so far I like it and the controls are a lot cleaner.
Seriously I love macOS Big Sur and a little inconvenience never hurt anybody and honestly I think they should keep those names not change the settings or the app library keep it launchpad and system preferences.
I really don't care. Because they are killing the macOS as an adult desktop system with full of freedom.. to baby desktop OS. No dmg files, no virtualization, no multiplatform open-source development, no system extensions, no support x86-x64 apps with backward compatibility, etc. I will leave macOS and Apple because it lost the sense to me use it like work tool.
I install the first beta on my old MacBook Air 2014. It works slow and I think RAM is an issue because it has 4GB. So, instead of going back to Catalina I installed Mojave, and runs very fast now. I don't like the 3D icons, they are so from 2 decades ago... But I think Apple is trying different approaches to redesign the icons and now they are taking notes of what people say.
I'm more concerned about them fixing the bugs than new features introduced. I know my 2020 Air has a bug when trying to watch movies in the Apple TV app, if you go full screen then it flickers black. Soon as you leave full screen...no issues. Only happens in the Apple TV app.
As a photographer, I still have PTSD over Catalina 10.5.2 completely crashing Canon tethering support. 😬 So… 😬 I don't know that I will be upgrading for awhile until I know it's safe… 😬
Unpopular opinion: I’m in love with those new icons, I think they are so unique and cool. And it will make going from iPhone/iPad to Mac so much easier and less confusing when trying to find the app.

Catalina still looks cleaner, Big Sur while looking more responsive still seems lacking in uniformity. Small things like overall clarity and contrast, consistency of text size, icons and buttons layout, and uniform margins totally separate the best from the worst UI experiences.
The OS Big Sur is full of annoying problems, since that your printer is not longer print because a problem with AirPlay drivers, also another annoying problem is with external drives trying to search documents with SpotLight, that are two problems reported to Apple and no answer yet

I personally think that the release date will be earlier because I don't see apple launching the first ARM macs via a website refresh and due to COVID-19, 2 events in the span of 3 months is a little much. I think that the mac will launch at the iPhone event in September, although there is the potential for it to launch then and not be available until big sur comes out later.

If anyone wants to know how to access battery usage over time on Catalina and older, all you have to do is open up Activity Monitor and go to the Energy tab. The info and chart will appear on the bottom.

Literally all the issues with Big Sur is that it is a half ass design from iOS, instead of being fully consistent with iOS and iPad OS. You cannot combine two different icon styles without the entire scheme looking poor in execution. MacOS Big Sur should be consistent with iOS in UI.
Absolutely horrible design. Trying to conform MacOS to mobile operating systems is IMHO a bad move; I mean I understand this decision from a marketing point of view, but these changes are causing MacOS to slowly lose its elegance - especially these ubiquitous transparencies are extremely annoying. I really don't like it. Don't go this path Apple.

If you want to put an app in a folder, you have to move the mouse slowly. Don’t whip your mouse around otherwise the folders will move.
I personally love the new slightly shadowed icons but I do agree the battery icon needs to go. It looks so stupid.

I was hoping to see watch OS style of home screen (movable app palette) for the iPhone. It would be easier to use with one hand.

Literally all the issues with Big Sur is that it is a half ass design from iOS, instead of being fully consistent with iOS and iPad OS. You cannot combine two different icon styles without the entire scheme looking poor in execution. MacOS Big Sur should be consistent with iOS in UI.
I love Big Sur I bought a 2015 MacBook Air 2015 for 250 and Big Sur makes difference

Big Sur is the ugliest macOS update to date. I don't wanna sit down and use a big screen iPad, i bought a mac and i damn well wanna use it.

Absolutely horrible design. Trying to conform MacOS to mobile operating systems is IMHO a bad move; I mean I understand this decision from a marketing point of view, but these changes are causing MacOS to slowly lose its elegance - especially these ubiquitous transparencies are extremely annoying. I really don't like it. Don't go this path Apple.
When iOS went "flat" it was game over at Apple for UI design.

Maybe he is trying to express his feelings about big sur using that tone of music without actually saying it.
It may get touch but this would not make sense on a Mac Mini.
I think this might be the operating system that gets me to abandon The Mac. I find it hideous.

@@pooploops I think you're right. The reason I used Mac to begin with was that it put you at the wheel of your computer. Over the past 10 years I've been feeling more and more like I've been lashed to the wheel of my computer, and phone, rather than being the one steering it.
