macOS Big Sur Hands on First Look! The Future of ARM Macs
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 21 июн 2020
- macOS Big Sur represents a complete visual overhaul for the Mac. This update brings redesigned icons, new Catalyst Messages and Maps apps as well as new sounds. Perhaps the biggest feature of macOS Big Sur is the revelation that Apple is going to be making the transition from Intel processors to it's own Apple Silicon ARM processors in the next 2 years. In today's video I've downloaded the Big Sur Beta and we're going to go over all the new features.

Hey Luke it would be interesting to hear you and Louis Rossmann discuss where things are going as he often points out the expected flaws with the hardware. This helps us customers make decisions about compatibility and repair issues. As a long time tech user I have found new generations often have a bunch of issues which the early adopters usually have to bear the brunt of.
as I am a music producer with lots of devices from over the generations it is a balancing/plate spinning act of getting things running nicely and though I know this isnt a concern of apple it would be good to know what software/hardware ailments to expect or beware of. thanks dude

I think that the design change to more of a “touch” friendly interface is more indicative of Apple trying to unify the OS designs so that one can more easily switch between platforms.
And it‘s probably cheaper to develop when you only need one design instead of two
@@laysepolm There are some touch design choices going on here beyond consistency. Just look at the menu bar spacing. I predict a new imac much like the Surface Studio.
Jake Coventry you’re most likely right I was seeing the same thing
What I think might be very off but I have a feeling that using their own ARM silicon as well as this iPad like feel, they might just be gearing up for an iPad with macOS. Even if it isn't that it could be something very similar.
I agree and I like the changes.

@Bobby Brady Priceless! lol
Touch screen on a macbook? All the smudges would drive me crazy, lol.
So how do you manage with your phone? And potentially your tablet if you own one?
Latrell Jennings can’t compare both
@@Nur__ well a tablet touch screen can be compared to a laptop touchscreen
@@Nur__ why not? I think they are very comparable. if anything, phones experience more touches per area than touchscreen laptops.
@@KenoshaCaptures Tablets smudge like crazy. I had to put a matte screen protector on mine to fix it, which is a fine solution on a tablet, whose main input is touch, but certainly not on a laptop. Phones, of course, have much better oleophobic coating due to their small screens, and you can change up screen protectors on them to keep the oleophobic coating fresh.
"Why did they put brightness slider in the control center?" Easy: accessibility. Imagine an user with a disability who wants to dim the screen but his only input device is a dedicated controller.
More options = more people catered.
Oops, wrong. Not so easy.
Accessibility has always been opt in features on Mac. I use one of them although I'm not impaired, but I love the 3 finger drag on the touch pads. Which makes the other 3 finger gestures to 4 finger gestures.
This sounds like a kind gesture but we know Apple is all about being 12 steps ahead when we think we are 1 step closer to figuring them out. The iPad Pro is about to become the next Mac Book
@@PrydeLive I agree. With the new keyboard and a very robust processor, moving MacOS to full compatibility with iPadOS will accomplish that even if Apple isn't planning for it.
At minimum, many would choose an iPad Pro + keyboard over a MacBook Air if they both run a substantially similar operating system with mutually compatible programs. App Store lockouts of certain programs could be the only real reason not to go that way, but how many Air buyers would be affected by that?
I hope they change the 'screenshot' sound. Every time I take a screenshot in public it sounds like I'm taking stalk-ish photos of people.

As a PC hardware enthusiast I am incredibly excited to see Apple moving to ARM. Seeing what Intel and AMD have done with only each other as competition I think with Apple pushing in they are just going to keep pushing harder for consumers to keep them from moving to Apples cooler and more efficient chips.
Common how about hackintoshing
@@jaspreetsmovies3061 hackintoshing will continue as long as apple still supports intel which they said they will "for years to come" which really could mean anything - consider the powerpc to intel transition, apple dropped powerpc support after like 3 years (first intel macs released in 2006, Mac OS X Snow Leopard released in 2009 dropped support for ppc) leaving people with perfectly fine and still relatively new computers in the dirt. how long will apple support intel, especially considering the new Mac Pro and 16'' MacBook Pro only came out towards the end of last year and apple said in their wwdc keynote that they will still be releasing intel-based macs at least until the end of the year? time will tell.
It will take a few years until ARM SoCs will be close to Intel/AMD Performance. ARM might work for the average iOS User but MacOS is placed more towards the professionals.

For those of us that were around when Apple switched from PowerPC to Intel, here we go again.
What, for those who were there, here we go again for us who where there when they went from 68k to PPC
John Doe - depends on how you use your Mac. Do your must have apps transition quickly and bring all the features you use over is the question that has to be addressed every time.
Apple itself is notorious for dropping features in their own apps and taking 2-4 generations to bring back similar functionality. I’ve used ClarisWorks -> AppleWorks -> iWork for basic word processing and page layout and I always lost features - some for a year or two, some permanently. iWork apps are now included with the OS, but it’s predecessors weren’t always so it was frustrating to lose features in software you paid separately for.
Yep, virtualization is gone. Deal killer, for me.
@@TheyRiseBand what are you virtualizing? There’s both windows and linux for arm.
@John Doe No it wasn't, it was honestly the most amazing transition ever, they did an amazing job. The one I recall that was horrible was moving from Mac OS 9 to X. That was horrible for devs. I was working in the Graphic design industry that at the time was mainly using Macs and the hate towards Apple was big, apps like Quark ran like hot garbage in OS 10.0-10.5. Apple made many many changes to OSX in the early days, it seemed like we had a new OS build every month.

Apple's new processor products: Apple ARM and Leg ...
Probably describes the new price tags
Kien Hweng Tai technically if they are using there own processors then they can keep the price the same or even less and have greater performance because they won’t have to pay intel.... then again, it’s apple... so they might raise the price.
@@matthewcosta644 With Intel and AMD, you can work out the prices they charge since they have other customers. If Apple make their own CPU/SOC then we will have no idea of the real cost and ... if they are applying an insane markup.
@@matthewcosta644 Most likely keep the price limit, and have some performance gains. But it will not be easy in the beginning as apps will still be more powerful on the x86 plattform until they have been rewritten.
@@dbtest117 Looks like the big companies have already done the port but then they have ARM apps for iOS and Android so all they had to is port from iOS ecosystem to MacOS XI ARM. Whether these native apps are better is something else.

I’m honestly surprised with everything changing that the drive icon still looks like a traditional hard drive

What do you think is gonna happen to the resale values of all of the newer intel macs now that ARM macs can provide better performance for lower costs?

ONE THING CARRIED FROM OLD MACOS!!! when you toggle the volume or the brightness from the touchbar THEN THE POPUP LOOKS THE SAME!!!

@@d.a.r.a.n.o.i.d same. The iOS 13 volume thing on the side near the buttons is great. I'm sure they could implement the same on a Mac, even if they just put it up the top near the sound icon BC the dock would get in the way.

Anybody getting this déjà vu moment of "Windows 7 to Windows 8" ?
UGH Yes and I’m NOT for it.
not really, in this case, the UI is still "same". in windows 7-8 Microsoft forces PC users as "tablet" but yet there are no "tablet-ish" apps available yet. and back then even the rest of the world doesn't use "smartphone" yet. in my country, only a few people use "android".
These days, android and ios are everywhere, even "old gen" people already used to with touch-based screens.
I am still using MacOS High Sierra and OS X Mavericks lol😂

OS X Mavericks was the last beautiful macOS

Very nice video bro. Cant wait to use this OS
I'm curious as to what System Preferences looks like now.
Definitely though the same seeing how round everything is. Prepping for an iPad Pro like rounded display. A lot of the UI looks suspiciously more touch friendly too.
I wanted to ask one thing, I'm actually thinking to buy a mac, so do you think i should wait for the upcoming arm-based macs or buy the existing one(Macbook pro). I'm a programmer as well as love to game a bit. Please reply your suggestions
Super excited and cannot wait for these new updates
The question remains "Big Sur", how is your performance?
Hi Luke, i hope to see if there is any performance boost from this new OS update?
Beta versions are test purposes and hadn't optimized yet. Performance tests won't be good references for now. This is "Developer" Beta. The only purpose of this version is to allow developers to test their apps and prevent them from future crashes.
@@furkanpolatackgoz1840 I do agree with you and it make sense too. But still, i'm curious to see this one and especially this one because they have it coming and they seem to be working on it for a long time. i still remember on catalina beta 3 or 4 it was almost polished and the performance was fantastic on my MBP 2018. I do believe apple optimization still limits in somehow the full power of the hardware on both mobile devices and desktop ones. This is my observation from my hackintosh build, its way faster than my 16 core mac pro 19 in some areas
B Snazzy Labs said in passing that it “felt insanely fast” on his Mac Pro compared to Catalina
@@furkanpolatackgoz1840 I have been a macOS beta tester for a while; there is usually little difference in performance between betas and final release. Apple likely started working on Big Sur 3 or so years ago.
I feel like the design language is like that because maybe one day iPads will run MacOS? Especially since now both of them are powered by Apple chips.
I seriously hope not, that would be a failed experiment
Catalyst Apps like the Mac App Store always felt a bit out of place before. Now everything looks like that...
That shit will fail
Nah they just want one unified design language
You can run MacOS now on the iPad
Can’t wait to see Big Sur on my Mac. Excellent video congrats!

@@wolfwarren6376 Definitely, Wolf Warren... I've lived in Big Sur California for 20 years, now... I love it...it's definitely beautiful here.
It’s not macOS Mojave’s or high Sierra or Big Sur to me anymore. To avoid pronunciation errors I’m going to simple refer to it as “the latest version of macOS”
You can't pronounce "High Sierra?"

Cool vid. How is the stability
I downloaded macOS Big Sur Developer Beta from betaprofiles.com and some really weird things are happening:
1- Dock and Menu Bar are not transparent they're solid!
2- Can't connect to Wi-Fi ( it says connected in the system preferences but in safari, it doesn't)
3- Some apps are not launching! ( I open them and they quit after I opened them in 2 seconds:(

Please no touch on the display. I've had my Thinkpad X1Carbon for years and I don't even touch the display. It muddies the display.
If so, the screen would probably have a coating similar to iPhone/iPads 😊
A thinkpad xD
Major, MAJOR agreement. IMO the differentiation between touch interfaces and non is a much better idea than something like a Surface. No hate towards the Surface, but it's mediocre at essentially all things and not ideal for anything, really.
@Ewan Hill I guess I wasn't clear. For me, I don't see the point of a touch display as I don't even use the touch display on my laptop. I got used to a mouse.
@@oofingberg A lot better than a MacBook, that's for sure.
I really hope they don't give the mac screens round corners
That would be so bad they already took macOS's distinct flat design away
I hate round corners. On a small device it's ok (Like how BlackBerry or Palm did) but when it's a big screen, it makes the screen feel smaller and it looks like it's taking so much screen real estate
I’d love to have rounded corners on the display and uniform, thin bezels.
@@andrive omg yeah its disgusting on the iPad Pro
im trying to watch a video on full screen on the corner bothers me bc the frame is getting cut off

how or what do we use from flash to make some web pages and apps to work???
Does launchpad have the new app list view? And what is the boot camp process like on Big Sur?
One thing that nobody seems to expect but makes a lot of sense: macOS 11 will probably run on iPad Pro.
Oh my god i was thinking the exact same thing!
@@MsHackthat
I REALLY doubt that.
The ipad pro is fast, but i dont think it's fast enough, or has enough ram, for a full macOS experience. That's why ipadOS is a thing.
THIS! I really wouldn't be surprised. Even the control center to change the volume / brightness is touch friendly
@@1337GameDev not yet, but with the transition to ARM processors even in Macs, there will be a lot more overlap and it will probably be possible but not quite likely with the effort they're putting in to revolutionise iPadOS. Touch screen Macs could pretty much just be an iPad pro with a built in keyboard though, but unless it can flip or detach, the iPad would still have the advantage for drawing and handwriting
But this doesn’t make sense for professionals. There’s no dedicated GPU for video editors, graphics designers or even other power users like devs etc. I won’t be getting an iPad to replace my MacBook anytime soon.
I really hope they aren’t gearing up for touch screen Macs. I hope it’s just for making everything uniform
I really think they intend to keep the iPad and Mac separate when it comes to their core functionality, at least as long as computing works the way it does today. It just wouldn't be better to have to reach up and touch your laptop and desktop screen and they seem to be the first, most reliable, and only company to insist upon that.
@@PureWonder1111 people actually really enjoy touchscreen laptops... and 2 in 1s like the surface line. Apple could easily make an ipad pro run macos as well as iPadOS, just a matter of time imo. I like the new icons. They look much more consistent with the OS' design language (eg. drop-down menus with rounded corners, highlighted buttons, etc.).
I neither like nor dislike the new icons. The spread of differently shaped icons on the macOS 10 releases gave it a classic charm that was slightly messy, but not overbearing to interfere with daily use. However, macOS 11's very uniform icons and new sounds are a great way to introduce the next chapter of Apple's technological evolution.
