MacOS has had a long history, stretching back to 1984 with the original classic operating system. It set a new standard for computing by popularizing the graphical user interface and mouse. Since that initial release, macOS has gone through many iterations, but this video isn’t about the operating system’s history, that’ll be for another time. Today, I’m going to explain the significance of the most recent macOS version called Big Sur, to be released sometime this fall. It marks a completely new era for the Mac, and lays the groundwork for future models featuring Apple’s custom-designed ARM processors that could completely change the way Macs are used. Наука
As a musician, I’ve learned from Catalina to wait far into the release to upgrade to give all the 3rd party apps I need the chance to upgrade
I’m just gonna use garageband or cakewalk lol
Some VSTs don’t even work on Catalina yet
You're gonna need to switch to windows with next macs lol. None of the established daws are gonna work on macos for a long time
@@pupperemeritus9189 that makes no sense at all. First of all, have you heard of Rosetta 2? It emulates x86 apps and it works good so far. They even said at WWDC that *plugins* are emulated, too.
Second of all, Logic Pro, which is a great Daw, works natively on Apple silicon.
@@pupperemeritus9189 yeah i mean there’s logic at least, and I use macs so I can use that and Final cut, but yeah is ableton isn’t supported in the future I will be switching
Ive seen a lot of videos saying like: the icons are bigger because there will be a touchscreen MacBook" but you know what I think, they might have done it for the people who use sidecar.
Which only really work well with an apple Pencil.... so i doubting that
I just think it's a unified design choice. Apple has once already said that they're never going to do a touchscreen Mac. Considering the growing support of the iPad Pro by and for professionals I highly doubt that. The Sidecar argument makes sense tho lol
IMO they are in this way because the next macs will have chips that enable ios apps running natively on Mac. In this way, ios icons will be more consistent with mac icons.
@@l99fiamingo oh my god you’re smart
@@xXxMrRazorxXx They’ll probably do something to the encoding then where Sidecar can distinguish an iPad screen from a Mac display and change the icons accordingly. Kind of like how Windows 8 had separate touch vs desktop interfaces, except it’s MUUUUUUCH more seamless
“Big Sur is more than just cosmetic changes”, proceeds to describe a bunch of cosmetic changes
Maybe you weren’t listening. The icons are now a rounded square! The computer functions COMPLETELY differently now.
This major version bump is pretty arbitrary. I don’t think there are any significant changes to the operating system itself (i.e., the Mach microkernel and servers that run on top of it).
Exactly. Big Sur? It's a big no thanks from me
I need to find out how the square is not long er a square this update is our latest getting edge Technology
MacOS is now built on top of the iOS base code instead of existing as a separate entity, just like iPadOS. That's the non-cosmetic change, and considering it's importance, I'm unsure why it wasn't discussed in the video.
The fact that they didn't call their processors "Apple Cores" is a chuffing disgrace.
Yeah if they don’t call their spectacles “i glass” I will be very disappointed
They could have called their Apple Pencil (2nd Gen) No. 2 but they missed that too.
@@EricMason0321 I don't understand the pun.
@@jonhatton6686 pencils.com/pages/no-2-pencil
Apple has to be very careful turning the desktop into a giant cell phone. Microsoft bungled when trying this with Windows 8 and alienated users so much that W10 reverted to the familiar taskbar and icons. OSX has built up 20 years worth of user happiness which is very valuable goodwill that should be embraced in Big Sur, not abandoned.
I think that Apple has a different position than Microsoft did back then. Windows users did/do not have a universe of similar products coming out of one hand. Therefore Apple users have a much larger affinity to these kind of changes. Sure, Apple shouldn’t overdo it but they have a much better basis to start from with users who are more likely to accept these changes.
Yea but this doesn’t change much with use. Maybe a few layout differences like the control center and the full side bar of controls on some apps. But it’s mostly cosmetic.
@@ricochet4674 Well, I think it is more than that. I don’t see a large gap between iPad with trackpad and a Mac. Yes, currently the changes are often cosmetic but this does influence the use as well and ultimately the systems are really coming to getter more an more (in cosmetics as well as functionality).
If we are being fair to the vision that Microsoft had, they destroyed the universal platform. They also destroyed Windows on mobile. They abandoned WP 7 with WP8 and then again for WP8.1. They left no backward compatibility for developers and no easy development path for transitioning apps from one platform to another. Something else that hindered Microsoft is that they should have used their overwhelming market share and enterprise entrenchment to announce the death of x86 and 32 bit. They should have pushed UWP and left x86 behind. They should have announced a date a few years down the road and a path to help individuals, corporations, and developers make the transition. That way many apps be developed for one platform and easily ported to the mobile and back to the desktop again.
I have never been a huge fan of Windows but I loved windows 10 mobile, even more than my iPhone and iOS. And I really loved the MS band. I could have moved to a windows 10 platform for these devices and the online windows sync services could have slowly lured me from the Mac ecosystem. I love my Mac and it’s ecosystem but if MS had really pushed the innovation, especially in the mobile space with seamless integration in the desktop workspace- it would have been great.
@@Thoths_Pen A lot to unpack, I had to read your post twice. MS has a tricky business strategy ahead. They have to protect x86 market share and guard against Linux taking market share. MS will never abandon x86. X86 has achieved critical mass with equipment manufacturers, software developers and most importantly business market share.
MS greatest threat has to be that Apple and Linux are trying to bring the free OS paradigm to x86. Apple's decision to make MacOS free is in stark contrast to Window's licensing and activation and is a big reason that MacOS has the loyal and rabid following that Windows can never attain. No doubt, the Linux model contributed to Apple's bold decision. Linux is a viable and free alternative that with a little development could replace Windows and eat into MS OS revenue stream.
Did MS miss an opportunity with UWP? Probably not. W10 still dominates business and gaming markets which for unknown reasons are not on Apple's radar. As long as MS enjoys a healthy OS revenue stream, they will stick with x86.
Really? Big Sur is more important than Leopard was? Leopard is when macOS became the macOS we all know today!
I loved leopard, but was also a huge fan of snow leopard.
Eh, I mean yes, but like, Big Sur is more important because it’s designing and outlining how the Mac will be progressing going FORWARD. Right now, you’re looking backwards.
And Lion was freaking huge. It replaced all the useless stuff with Mission Control, Spaces, and extra.
@@homg85 snow leopard for the win! I love that intro video
It is because processor architecture is changing.
It doesn’t need to be the same OS. It just needs to be complimentary so that they all seamlessly work together.
I have always found snow leapord my favorite
I grew up with Snow Leopard. I was amazed when my dad got Windows XP running on it.
Last one to support PowerPC apps, a lot of people still use it today because of that fact.
Same here. I've got an old iMac with SL installed and I don't feel like updating the system!
I've just re-installed it on my very first MacBook Pro mid 2009 as I'm going to sell the machine but I'm having second thoughts because it flies on a SSD. My old apps work and to be honest it's more enjoyable to use than Catalina.
@@jinkertsun I tend to tell people to go with Mojave if their Mac allows it, Catalina isn't worth the compromises or data issues that it introduced.
I honestly love macOS Big Sur’s redesign. Especially all the improvements to mail and messages because the current version is horrendously and increasingly difficult to use. For a company who prides themselves on simplicity, mail and messages on Catalina and earlier are difficult to navigate. I like the seamless look between Big Sur and iPadOS and iOS. Everything just looks more coherent and more seamless. But not everyone will like it, at least not at launch because of how “dramatic” the new design is. So Far I’m liking it. I just need them to releases the damn update to the damn public

It’s incredible that Steve Jobs was right about the life span of macOS.
Maybe he saw the future
Or, maybe, the employers wanted to wait it out until 2020 to release a new line of MacOS?
@@SohailJafar1 Pretty much, if he hadn't made those claims we would already have had OS11, OSX outstayed its welcome a long time ago.
HE WOULD HATE THE FLAT ICONS! Does this mean all icons even non-native icons must be the same shape?
@@SohailJafar1 Maybe that’s why they still haven’t fully released Big Sur, because they want to keep the 20 year prophecy: 2001-2021!
Wow. Even after 8 minutes of talking, you failed to mention a single reason why this could be the most important release ever.
Why does that sound like something out of the last Jedi lol
so true, what a scam
Thank you so much! You just spared me a lot of time
My guy .... stop 🛑 with the click-bait and deliver for real.
@@AnimationByDylan I am an Apple shareholder, and this video does nothing to tell me why this release is “The Most Important Release Ever”.
In regards to the video, I will say that Apple started putting iOS-like features as far back as 10.7 Lion. Lion introduced Launchpad, a full screen app launcher that looks very similar to icons on an iPad/iPhone of the time. This was around the time Apple started promoting full screen features of their apps as well.
10.8 introduced iMessage as well
For some reason apple removed widgets from the Mac with macOS Catalina but added them in iOS 14
“A soul for a soul”
@@xalataf3365 I LITERALLY THOUGHT THE SAME EXACT THING

They're different kinds of widgets, as far as I know.
Yea but they should put widgets back in Mac OS so the two platforms have widgets

But they were mushed together to make a new kimd
Grest video, thanks for putting this together. I may be showing my age, but I noticed one thing in your video that I see almost everywhere. When referring to the Mac, you show only the laptop. I have noticed that most people these days seem to think that a Mac is only a laptop, when really it started out as a desktop. I am always sad to see the desktop models ignored and left out. I just heard that new desktop PC/Mac sales are up 12%, which is incredible. Seems with all the remote work, people are finding out that their mobile devices are able to cut it as a work horse and are buying desktops to get the work done. Just an observation. Thanks for doing this video, it was interesting. 👍😎😀
4:10 you still always got me at that subtle advertising
I don’t have a Apple Mac or any type of desktop ever but watching you explain is breathtaking
Arm MacBooks sound pretty exiting, though I wouldn’t get one or recommend getting one until at least the second or 3rd generation because app support outside of Appstore is gonna be rather limited for the first year or 2
Yes, 2022 will be the safer year to switch to ARM
Not really, I have my M1 Mac mini for 3 months and for now every app I download just works.
Just like old times....
FINALLY!!!!
Music, narration, slides
Nothing could be better
Thanks for the heads up!

I have the Big sur beta on my MacBook Air from mid 2019, it Works fantastic and looks amazing. So happy i Got it
I would really love it if the Mac cursor looked and worked like the one on the iPad!
Great, when is it coming out tho? Are the betas showing too many flaws for Big Sur?
It something I think they need to slow down and take more time on the whole thing seems rushed right to shit.
Probably with the new Mac release up to November
Not Really. I am currently using Beta version of MacOS Big Sur. The only problem I faced was while installing audio apps from chrome which require audio drivers else everything was fine
@@gautamarora6516 Nice. How well does the feature work when the AirPods switch devices automatically?
Great video hope you have a great day
when is the release date? can't wait for it on my mac
It’s very possible the Mac could have a touchscreen in the future as a lot of iOS and iPadOS apps won’t be optimized for a keyboard and trackpad or mouse.
The iPad has pretty much been shoehorned in as the new Macbook. With the new Mac ARM chips, it'll be the lower-end Macbook Air that's even more portable and is optimised for touch and pen input.
Dare I say that iPads and MacBooks will be fused together, like those convertible laptop/tablet hybrids.
@@amirpourghoureiyan1637 The MacBook Pro will certainly get the same treatment and probably get it first
@@QuarioQuario54321 I really doubt they want to steal the iPad’s main feature, all the signs have pointed to this with how anti-touchscreen they’ve been with the Mac, limiting touch capability to just a function bar.
With how much they’ve changed just in aesthetics, OS 11 is most likely going to be a port of iPadOS, serving as the true replacement to the BSD clone they’ve had for the past 20 years.
@@amirpourghoureiyan1637 Big Sur is OS 11. Also a lot of icons are spaced out further, which when you have the precision of a mouse you don’t really need.
Big Sur is going to be a game changer for me.
I just joined the ecosystem a year ago with iphone and now i also have AW6 and Airpods.
I'd like to buy a computer and hopefully they release the air because a pro for me would be too much.
What if i dont want the beta on my mac book air ? I just want the regular OS so when i download big sur OS i have the orginal not the beta
When it comes to apps made for arm processors, I just hope they'll allow users to install from the web. I have a bad feeling it might end up being from the app store only...
It would cut out too many important apps though!
Changing all the icons into a rounded rectangular shape is just cruel, even to Apple's standard.

when is the release date for this mac os big sur ?
4:05 what a derp way to insert ur sponsored content
Very informative video.
anyone know when it’s being released?
My question is : what will happen to the processors of the iMac Pro and Mac Pro ? Will it have a Xeon processor or what will replace it?
Good question. Apple chips certainly have the oomph to replace Xeons, and new supercomputers, such as the top ranked Fugaku machine, use similar ARM chips. So I guess they’ll go to Apple’s new processors, too. Probably slower, not just for engineering time, but also because pro apps tend to change more slowly. When the Pro machines eventually come out, they should be impressive. 5nm will allow a lot more power in the same space as Intel’s big, hot 14nm Xeons.
It may sounds off topic, but comon „Clean my Mac X“ that HDD icon with the Disk and Readinghead is outdated, same as the icon Apple still keeps at MacOS. Thanks Greg for that great video again.
“Mac have always felt out of place”? When was this dude born? In the 90s? Macs have always felt natural and uncluttered.
Nah they just have standards
When I use Windows, it's always a shitstorm lmao. That's why my work laptop is a macbook. I still use Windows for gaming tho.
Greetings. Stop at 0:44 and resume at 0:46. Then stop at 4:09 and resume at 4:56. This transition is rather weird. Is the target audience no tech-savvy, that is unable to manually remove files they do not need? I would find it more justifiable if he talked about how Big Sur presents the solution (as it is the topic of this video). There is a tacit admission that this so called awesome update does not solve a crucial pain point. My two cents.
Mans speaking english muffin
When is it going to fully release?
I was thinking the touchable look in Mac OS Big Sur could potentially allow apple to support the iPad as an input device when using sidecar
I'm not happy that the Mac could become a big iPad some day. Neither Android nor iOS are suitable for productive work. Okay it may depend on what you are working on. It is a torture for me to write a simple letter in Word on my iPad Pro. It's great to be up to date wherever you are but not for working.
I disagree. With a good keyboard, I actually find doing most of my productive work to be more enjoyable on the iPad than on any other OS
@@codeboi456 Word and writing a latter was just an example and Pages is not that better. A real keyboard okay but most tablet screens are too small. And then, "Apps": Teeny tiny little programs reduced to a minimum of functionality. Great for being up to date but that's really all.
Thats never happening
Inevitable
@@iiq12ii I don't see it that way. Microsoft has already realized that this is nonsense
i loved this so much!! thank you for informing everyone 😍
I can't believe how far it has come
Do you think you will be able to play steam games on Big Sur and apples arm chips when the new MacBooks come out?
Can you show how to change system app/folder icons without breaking the system? The UI is terrible in not following the squircle across everything.
10.4.4 was the most important release ever. Apple transitioned from PowerPC to Intel which allowed them to stay competitive in the PC space as well as giving them the playbook needed to transition to another architecture in the future.
One thing I don't like with macOS Big Sur is the transparent menu bar. I had to add a light-colored strip the size of the menu bar to the top of my wallpaper in order to see the icons and text on the menu bar. I really hope they don't change the pointer to a circle. If anything, they should change the pointer on iPadOS to an arrow.
I don’t know. I’m kinda skeptical on how I’m gonna feel about all my devices looking the same. I kinda liked the fine line apple drew in the difference between using a Macintosh machine and using an iPhone or iPad . I just feel like this new MacOS look cheap and literally like a bigger version of an iPhone. Not that there is anything wrong with iOS14 but I just like the feel of using something DIFFERENT.
Nah I think that right now it is one of the most exciting moment in Apple history as they finally fill the gaps between devices and put them into one seamless ecosystem. If folks like inconsistency and differences there have been things there for a very long time called Android and Windows and they too try very hard to be like Apple.
I disagree personally. I’m happy the icons are going to be rounded squares. I wish the icon art was exactly the same as on iOS/iPadOS though
@@trampolinetricksguys It's just the beginning of filling the gaps amongst the OS's. They"ll eventually try to unify the icons, etc. without making it look absurd.

when is final release for public ?
Big Sur isn’t out yet?
With Big Sur, I’m experiencing Big Problems. The “copy paste” function across iPhone and MacBook is not working, safari is extremely laggy with online meetings (and it’s not internet’s fault but more like ram sensitivity when one or more apps are launched, even is they have nothing to do with internet connection, mess up the connection) and the microphone, plus some keyboard keys don’t respond (like the screen brightness and the volume). All this problems momentarily disappeared if the MacBook is rebooted, but will eventually start popping again like hiccups. This, my personal experience, just validates the point of “Don’t update yet to Big Sur.” Wait for at least a month for the first patches to come up.
A new operating system is not only a new user interface. I hope they bring security and stability back to Mac. The reason I open Activity Center to see what processes take up so much CPU. Because some are running at 100% without any obvious reason.
