I cannot stand the new icons and I'm annoyed that third parties are starting to follow suit. Discord just changed their icon to the new conformity and it looks terrible. At least allow us to change the icons back. Also, the rounded corners of windows are horrible. Especially when you have a window in the upper corner and you can see the space between. There needs to be a transparency slider. The amount of window transparency is just way overdone at times and makes it difficult to see. In dark mode (which is what I always use), I just turned off the transparency completely. The warning, security, confirmation, etc. windows that pop up are now portrait shaped, which makes zero sense when you're using a monitor that is landscape. It just looks like a forced change instead of a change that visually makes sense to do. There are quite a few more gripes like this, but I'm done for now.
lol... i like the "BIG SUR" boast at the start... You meet allot of colourful characters on RUclips.🤣 Also i like the vid. but I put Bug sur into the M1 category.. Reason being that's all Apple markets as Big Sir... They do say somewhere about Intel as well, but 90% is all "optimised for M1" with little said about Intel, and for good reason being that M1 new, Intel is old, so why would you wanna makes some new OS on an old platform as 'performance will be the same" ? I take the same approach to new IOS versions running on older phones too.. And think that is a bad, but clever marking gimmick. (although it would be wrong technically) Intel: Catalina and below M1: Big Sur and above.. Just off-topic, the battery on iOS running old older phones iPhone 6s Plus is not too good, even with the "peak performance" is not very accurate.... I reckon Apple tweaked that info on purpose only for newer phones... Again, pushing users to newer phones and devices, they make more money every time you go back to their store.
This is probably the smoothest upgrade I’ve ever done. I migrated from macOS Catalina to Big Sur , but I waited over ½ years before upgrading :) I may wait a few months after macOS Monterey comes out before upgrading to that version.
which Mac are you using? It's 2022 I am still using Catalina on my MacBook Pro 2017 afraid it may slow down the performance or cause any issue with the battery
Big sur has been buggy for me on my MacBook Pro. Disappointed really. It’s also annoying that my iMac from 2013 is stuck on Catalina. With an external SSD it runs better than my max spec 2015 MacBook Pro. There’s no reason why the iMac can’t run big sur except greed from Apple encouraging upgrades.
The last storm caused a major portion of the cliffside along Highway 1at Big Sur to slide away into the ocean... ...Not to worry the internet highway remains open.
Not sure if there is a connection, but since I updated to Big Sur my two years old iMac has been randomly rebooting daily basis... giving also the black screen of death :-/ Hopefully some update coming soon to fix that... if possible? Anyone else experiencing anything like this? Or should I rebuild my system... :-o
You should update to the latest firmware to see if that resolves it. If not I suggest going back to Catalina. I’m currently running on Catalina and so far no problems with me for over 6 months
Hello Janne- There is an Apple reset called PRAM that resolves 70% of topics without risk of losing files or programs. Apple technicians perform this regularly. See if it resolves the issue. Here's how to reset your PRAM to reset the hardware components: Step 1- Shutdown your machine all the way down (not sleep or logging out) Step 2- Press the power button and then immediately press and hold down the: Command, Option, P, and R keys, all at the same time. Step 3- Hold ALL of those keys down until your Mac reboots and you hear the startup chime TWO TIMES (Yes, twice). This will take 10 to 30 seconds. Step 4- Let go of the keys and let your Mac reboot normally. Hope this helps!
I can’t wait until they have a touchscreen Mac and hear everybody complaining about all the fingerprints on the screen while they’re trying to work can’t wait for that one people are just never satisfied
Thanks for you info. I just bought an Imac 2019 and it came with Catalina. It has bothered me to update to big sur which is a whooping 12GB. I'm already having trouble with some apps that won't even work on Catalina, BS seems a big let down.
Personally, i really loved how OSX Snow Leopard's dock icons looked. When i switched from Win7 back in the days to Snow Leopard, the OS was so playful, i loved the star icon from iMovie for example. How the icons were different shapes. Also, the trash sound when you put something in the trash i don't like as much on Big Sur. I'm happy that i have two Mac Pro's though. One from 2013 which has Big Sur on it and my new one from 2019 which is my workstation. So i can test the OS. I have a lot of third party plugins on Logic Pro X which, i have to say a lot of the plugins are already up to date with Big Sur (and even the new M1 Mac's), so i think i will be good to update when the next macOS will be announced. I always wait as long as possible to update the OS. But i think because of the M1 Mac's that everything gets updated faster. Also, when updating to a new OS, it's almost as if you have a new computer! Same goes for iOS/iPadOS.
MacOS Big Sur works like trash on 2015 macbook air. Display flickering and camera flickering. I think you need to re-review your macbook pro because the bugs I got on my 2020 macbook pro are bad. They need updates!!!
What to do if the update installation of Big Sur is stuck? Been a week now. Anyone here solve the big sur installation issues? It seems like it ruin my laptop. I’ve done the utility thing, and my macbook air has no issues at all. But it’s not opening and stuck on an apple logo which the installation shows no progress at all! It has been a week! This is why I do not want to update because of these effin update issues. My son just push me to update. My laptop used to be super smooth and i never had a problem until this. I also have about 200gb available so space is not a problem!!!! I don’t want to keep on going to safe recovery just to use my laptop. Safe recovery is already on a big sur. However i do not want to keep on going to safe recovery. I want to just turn it on and start using
The one thing I hate about his Big Sur is that it looks like an IOS, I don't understand why Computer Operating systems are copying phones! Catalina looks way better and feels more professional.
More than a third of this video is dedicated to relatively unimportant things. Is icon design really worth seven minutes? If that’s all you care about get an iPad, the addl. money you’d be spending on mbp is would be better spent on charity. Dislike.
For me personally I’m using Mojave on my MacBook Pro and refuse to upgrade My new iMac has big sur and I only have one issue. The TV app. Mojave had iTunes Store for tv and movies. I use the just added tab to browse what’s new and buy accordingly. There is no way at all to do this on the tv app for big sur, iOS, iPadOS or Apple TV. By not having it I don’t know what newly added. So apple are happy to loose money from me. I just cancelled Netflix and don’t have cable anymore either so happy to pay for what I want. But finding new stuff is ridiculous. That’s my main issue otherwise I like it...except the new Safari bug across all macOS where you can’t attach files/upload docs.
I have noticed a big difference in battery life on an M1 Mac if I use Firefox instead of Safari. It’s the difference between charging the laptop every other day vs. every day.
I still can't get my head around that..,. Why would Apple, our any other company,,wanna sacrifice their own browser ? Particularly when it's not only the default with an OS, but its obviously most will use as it "comes with the OS" they are marketing ? I'm not talking video,,, just general browsing you se "Firefox" not seeing any "sufficient energy" impact under the battery icon, but Safari .... you do Should that be the other way around? Would make Apple look better so they choosing to loose out here. You could say with all the crap they put in, they do not fine tune their own browser, but that's the mistake they made. Just leaves the door open for 3rd party like Mozilla to be ahead of the game.
Why do people want a touch screen? It’s more fatiguing to tap the screen than to use a trackpad, plus fingerprints and a shaky hinge just isn’t my jam. I guess if Apple combines good touch screen and keyboard shortcuts then it could be cool
clearly , its only benefit Apple , great for consumer but for business and other engineering sector hardware depend on Intel or AMD soc architecture due to ARM limitation and power over analog system .
I just reaaally hate the thicker window title bars... What i loved about previous macOS versions in comparison to windows was the thin window title bar, and no ugly window border, like in windows... But now macOS is as thicc as Ubuntu with those fat windows... Also i hate the new spacing in the toolbar... Mac OS X Mavericks was the peak for macOS i'd say.
Anyone else experiencing Touch ID not working for purchases on Music app and App Store on MBA M1? I have had 3 sessions with Apple Support and they can't fix it. Anyone? Wondering if this is a Big Sur issue or hardware issue. We checked System Prefs, we tried purchasing music and apps while on Safe Mode, SMC reset, etc. I am extremely annoyed.
I think on some of the older machines this OS sucks even on a year old iMac so many little bugs, delays and just some of the strangest things I wish I would have never upgraded.
HUGE BUG and I can't believe you didn't even mention it. the save/open windows are f7^%ing tiny ... i have to rescale them every time ... EVERY F&^^%ing time. Have you saved any files in the past 2 months?
Come-on Brian!! Be you. If you feel the need BIIIIIGGG Sur us. The haters will always hate as you know. Just wanted to let you know what one OLD Guy thinks! Later ! Derrick
I disagree about a touch screen on the Mac dude. It’s just not natural. Leaning over the keyboard to zoom or punch or slide can be done just as easily using the trackpad. I just don’t see a good use case for it.
One app which hasn't been updated yet for bothe M1 and Big Sur in general, is Discord. And for whatever reason, they haven't made the iPad App available for the M1 series as of this writing. Hopefully, they will one day... Not that me having a Thinkpad X240 along with my Mac isn't a bad thing, but gee.
What about upgrading if you have a fusion drive? I've read much conflicting info. Here's my setup: iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, Late 2015). I know there's a list of compatible macs but has anybody been successful with the same setup as mine?
You didn't discuss security issues. Are there any? It seems each upgrade tightens controls, puts you in a straitjacket! I always program my laptop so I do NOT have to sign in...Can I still do that?
I'm sorry I upgraded my 2019 macbook pro 15 inch to Big Sur several months ago. The Battery is now terrible and the bluetooth keeps dropping devices no matter what resetting I do.
Why on Earth would Apple allow Big Sur to update to a 2013 MacBook Air? Bricked my machine. I wish I had just kept Catalina. :( If you have an older machine (that is compatible on the Big Sur update list), BE CAUTIOUS before you make this decision.
I actually was irritated before getting into BS. But after 2 days of using, I like the icons and looking at not adapted third party icons, I wish they impose an icon layout like under iOS. I wish wish wish that apple consolidates the option “customize Touch Bar” in all apps. That option is sometimes close to top of the View menu, sometimes close to bottom, sometimes not there at all although TB is active. TB seems half backed, even after 4 years... too bad, it could be way more useful
Big Sur DESTROYED my MacBook Pro 2019, which by the way, was running flawlessly before the update. I’m also noticing my iPad pros are buggy with the new 14.5.1 updates… wish I hadn’t updated. Apple makes me kind of sick.
@Brian tong found a bug in Big Sur 11.1 when I upgraded my Mac book pro to Big Sur it gave me a battery service error message and we downgraded to Catalina and my Mac book pro is a 2017 that is a new machine what up with that I hope you can do a video on that on a older Mac book pro to see if you get the same bug
Big sur reminds me too much of my iPhone. I’d prefer to feel like I’m on a laptop not a phone/iPad
With Big Sur and the M1 Macs I dumped my Windows PC and got back to the Mac. It felt like finally being back home after a long time.

How about BigSur compatibility with iMovie??? You did not say anything!! ?????
Great review
lol... i like the "BIG SUR" boast at the start... You meet allot of colourful characters on RUclips.🤣
Also i like the vid. but I put Bug sur into the M1 category..
(although it would be wrong technically)
Intel: Catalina and below
M1: Big Sur and above..
Remember when Microsoft came out with Vista and everyone hated all of the translucent stuff? Funny how that's now considered modern and fresh.
Im not sold...I need my Mojave as I can run CS6 (free) and Word (free)....screw this update
This is probably the smoothest upgrade I’ve ever done. I migrated from macOS Catalina to Big Sur , but I waited over ½ years before upgrading :)
I may wait a few months after macOS Monterey comes out before upgrading to that version.
which Mac are you using? It's 2022 I am still using Catalina on my MacBook Pro 2017 afraid it may slow down the performance or cause any issue with the battery
Big sur has been buggy for me on my MacBook Pro. Disappointed really.
It’s also annoying that my iMac from 2013 is stuck on Catalina. With an external SSD it runs better than my max spec 2015 MacBook Pro. There’s no reason why the iMac can’t run big sur except greed from Apple encouraging upgrades.
Have you tried a complete clean install? It has helped me in the past
Anyone else STILL have that bug where the desktop background glitches the hell out and turns black? How have they still not fixed that?!
This happened to me yesterday for the first time
yes!! so annoying.
I’d pay extra for a non touch Mac book with function keys instead of the touch bar.
Big Sir... lol. I heard a lot of issues on MacBook Pro Early 2015 model. Slow performance etc on MacRumourForums
The last storm caused a major portion of the cliffside along Highway 1at Big Sur to slide away into the ocean...
...Not to worry the internet highway remains open.
It runs like shit on macbook 12 2017 i5.
Is that the Chaturbate cam website symbol at 10:05 in his favorites??
Finally someone noticed
Not sure if there is a connection, but since I updated to Big Sur my two years old iMac has been randomly rebooting daily basis... giving also the black screen of death :-/
Hopefully some update coming soon to fix that... if possible? Anyone else experiencing anything like this? Or should I rebuild my system... :-o
You should update to the latest firmware to see if that resolves it. If not I suggest going back to Catalina. I’m currently running on Catalina and so far no problems with me for over 6 months
Hello Janne-
There is an Apple reset called PRAM that resolves 70% of topics without risk of losing files or programs. Apple technicians perform this regularly. See if it resolves the issue.
Here's how to reset your PRAM to reset the hardware components:
Step 1- Shutdown your machine all the way down (not sleep or logging out)
Step 2- Press the power button and then immediately press and hold down the: Command, Option, P, and R keys, all at the same time.
Step 3- Hold ALL of those keys down until your Mac reboots and you hear the startup chime TWO TIMES (Yes, twice). This will take 10 to 30 seconds.
Step 4- Let go of the keys and let your Mac reboot normally.
Hope this helps!
Brian I upgraded my Mac book pro and it keeps doing a service battery issue when I upgrade have you had this issue ?
Are you on version 12.2.1?
Used Big Sure for like 2minutes before switching back to Catalina, HORRIBLE update.
I can’t wait until they have a touchscreen Mac and hear everybody complaining about all the fingerprints on the screen while they’re trying to work can’t wait for that one people are just never satisfied
Safari slow load on Big sur. Also facebook eat alot memory when using Safari
Enjoyed the thorough review, Brian. Although I upgraded day 1, it's nice to have a full view of the features and upgrades. Keep it up my guy!
10:38 Why “charging on hold”? Battery optimization feature?
I think it so the batery can last longer
I want to just turn it on and start using
How can I change system app/folder icons? In the system, not for the installed apps after system installs.
Dislike.
For me personally I’m using Mojave on my MacBook Pro and refuse to upgrade
My new iMac has big sur and I only have one issue.
I'm not talking video,,, just general browsing you se "Firefox" not seeing any "sufficient energy" impact under the battery icon, but Safari .... you do
Should that be the other way around? Would make Apple look better so they choosing to loose out here. You could say with all the crap they put in, they do not fine tune their own browser, but that's the mistake they made.
Just leaves the door open for 3rd party like Mozilla to be ahead of the game.
Why do people want a touch screen? It’s more fatiguing to tap the screen than to use a trackpad, plus fingerprints and a shaky hinge just isn’t my jam. I guess if Apple combines good touch screen and keyboard shortcuts then it could be cool
clearly , its only benefit Apple , great for consumer but for business and other engineering sector hardware depend on Intel or AMD soc architecture due to ARM limitation and power over analog system .
please don't install macOS Big Sur on 2011 Macbook Pro 13 inch i installed it and it was super slow because my mac doesn't have metal gpu
Thank you, Brian! You certainly know your stuff! I use Clean My Mac regularly- wouldn't do without it!
I think on some of the older machines this OS sucks even on a year old iMac so many little bugs, delays and just some of the strangest things I wish I would have never upgraded.
am I the only one who wont update because of how ugly it is
The dramatic company laparoscopically roll because surname densply shade abaft a fluttering size. available, accidental recorder
My last time machine update: 445 days ago lol.
Are you crazy to ask for touchscreen? Its bloody tiring. Who want to clean the screen with that all that fingerprints?
HUGE BUG and I can't believe you didn't even mention it. the save/open windows are f7^%ing tiny ... i have to rescale them every time ... EVERY F&^^%ing time.
Have you saved any files in the past 2 months?
Come-on Brian!! Be you. If you feel the need BIIIIIGGG Sur us. The haters will always hate as you know. Just wanted to let you know what one OLD Guy thinks! Later ! Derrick
You mean the old startup tune? Sounds like the same one.
I got a M1 MacBook Air and it was my first mac (Windows user for over 20 years). How to disable the startup chime was the first thing I googled on it.
I disagree about a touch screen on the Mac dude. It’s just not natural. Leaning over the keyboard to zoom or punch or slide can be done just as easily using the trackpad. I just don’t see a good use case for it.
My macbook pro 15 inch 2015. Should i upgrade Big sur or Mojave 10.14.6?
One app which hasn't been updated yet for bothe M1 and Big Sur in general, is Discord.
And for whatever reason, they haven't made the iPad App available for the M1 series as of this writing.
Hopefully, they will one day... Not that me having a Thinkpad X240 along with my Mac isn't a bad thing, but gee.
Touch screen is for iPads not macs sorry
I'm watching this on my Samsung.
I wanted to know do you have to have to have the big Sur?
Yea I’m not updating
Can you please already drop the "I wish touchscreen" thing, no matter what you say, Apple will do as they please.
Downgrade it back to Catalina using the time machine
@Brian tong found a bug in Big Sur 11.1 when I upgraded my Mac book pro to Big Sur it gave me a battery service error message and we downgraded to Catalina and my Mac book pro is a 2017 that is a new machine what up with that I hope you can do a video on that on a older Mac book pro to see if you get the same bug
