the differences in rubber gaskets are why i always wipe the engine surface clean because the dirt ring from old filter can wind up under the new filters sealing surface. plus then you make sure none of old gasket is stuck to engine.

Mobil is 99% @ 30 microns, Fram XG is 99% @ 20 microns. Fram removed wire mesh backing because filter media was improved, and it was no longer necessary.

No, you’re comparing apples to oranges. Fram is not 99% @ 20 microns. Fram is 99% @ ABOVE 20 microns. Fram could be 99% @ 50 microns (50 is above 20).
It’s a misleading marketing gimmick to put any number and use “above.” Mobil could market exactly the same filter as 99% @ above 10 microns and legally it would be an accurate statement (30 is above 10).

It means definitely NOT 99% @ 20 microns. 99% is for larger particles. For 20 microns particles, the filtration is less than 99%.

Dust mite crap is 20 microns , I really don't think 20 or 30 microns that is being filtered over and over is going to harm a engine .
The high filter rate of the Fram is also causing restriction in flow. We proved this at work noticing a oil pressure drop of 5 to 7 psi compared to Honda oem filter. There is now a YT video showing the same thing. 20 microns sounde great but it does in fact cause a drop in flow and pressure. On a new engine may not be an issue on a older engine its not good.
Yup …. this would be a concern in ANY vehicle.
Especially at start up where flow is critical, and of course during the long cold winter months where flow is critical. Otherwise, the Fram seems to be a quality product. I’m curious to see what details are with their new filter sold exclusively at Walmart. It’s marketed as a high flow filter , the Fram Endurance.
Fram filter looks like a quality filter for the price. Well made and I sure would have no worries using it on my vehicles. Another awesome video!

How do you know Fram filtration numbers?!? It appears to be a misleading marketing trick, because they use “above”.
99% at “above” 20 microns could be any number above 20. The filtration could be 99% @ 30 microns or 99% @ 40 microns or even 99% @ 50 microns - all “above” 20 microns.
@@onedaily2471 No, it is an industry standard test and is the same used by Mobil 1. The Fram is indeed superior with filtration, by a wide margin. Fram will give you more numbers, like 93% at 15 microns. Mobil 1 won't tell you those numbers because they, frankly, are not nearly as good. For the price, the Mobil 1 is a ripoff. Best way to go is Mobil 1 EP oil and a Fram Ultra filter. Even the Fram orange can cheap filter out filters the Mobil 1 filter. It isn't even close.
Fram Ultra is 50% @ 20 microns.

Must say that I enjoyed the thoroughness of this video in showing pretty much every aspect of the filters in comparison. It would certainly be more work, but the only thing I would add is to somehow show the difference in how the oil cycles inside each one respectively. Great video otherwise.

Mobil 1 filters were notorious in the Jeep 3.8 for the anti-drainback valve not working at that particular angle. Mine, like others, experienced dry starts with a nice rattle for a second or so. I now run Fram Ultras and that is never an issue. Besides that, the filtration is MUCH better on the Fram. Even the cheapo orange can fram whips the Mobil 1 filter in filtration efficiency. In all fairness, I've not run a Mobil 1 in years, so the anti drainback issue may have been corrected. But the efficiency is so bad that I have no reason to give it another shot. I really enjoy your videos, by the way! This one was particularly good because my 2008 Jeep 3.8 gets this exact Fram filter every oil change!

i never had a problem with fram.they are like any other company. they give you a selection of model to choose from.& you pay more for a better product.too many blame fram when they buy the cheapest filter they can,
then want to run it 10k miles.common sence escapes some folks.

Hey. A bit late but I wanna tell you the low grade frams are horrible. Stick with thr titanium or ultra. Study for yourself but either way it's true.

Used to love Mobil 1 filters was super impressed with the analysis results from oil tests aswell as a result however. I had to start using Royal Purple as the Mobil 1 gaskets started leaking constantly and having major problems every time i would use them

The media Fram has is a bedding technology so it traps in layers better picture like a sponge
Moble 1 has a thicker base plate with larger holes ! but when i see sloppy glue and poor pleat construction with cellulose media that only traps up to 30 microns i have to give it to fram ultra and save $1 !
I'd go with the Fram. Yes they did a way with the metal backing on the ultra. But all that did was support the synthetic media because it's so soft. They now use the paper media to support the synthetic media which gives it better filtering capabilities. This is what Fram says anywho.

This new fram provides excellent filtering like the old one did. It is not any better or worse at filtering pe se than the old one was though. The old one was dual layer full synthetic media. Cellulose media is cheaper and eliminating the metal screen also cuts cost. It's a cheaper filter materials wise, but not cheaper for the consumer price wise. I have nothing against the new Fram ultra and would not hesitate to use one. It just offers less value because it is constructed of cheaper materials that does not translate into savings for the customer.
My newer ones still have the metal backing. New packaging but you can clearly see it through the holes. Maybe they just removed it from some of the models?
@@bigpicturethinking5620 I believe that may be the result of the manufacturer clearing out inventory of the older design. Even though there is a new package, it may take time to use up the old inventory. The older design will be phased out eventually....

The current version of the Fram XG filters do away with the wire mesh backing. (?) cheaper to make. The filtration is as good or better on the new version, IIRC.
It doesn't need wire mesh anymore with the newer design

I'll stick with the Mobil 1 filters ,because both the standard GM oil filter socket fits ,& I got literally 2 cases of mobil 1 oil filters for free & they didn't cost me anything, I got both the older Mobil 1 filters that was basically the AC Delco gold filters & a case of the newer Mann & Hummel made Mobil 1 filters ....I actually prefer the older Mobil1 filters though

base plates are designed different, one is concave the other is convex. mobile1 has larger inner tube and more holes smaller holes. I'm guessing that Mobile 1 might gives better/higher flow.
I use the Fram Ultra and think it is good bang for the buck. I put a longer one than what it calls for with no problems and same price. Also, this Impala is about to hit 300,000 miles on the engine and was mainly driven hard and the great majority of the engine's life it's used conventional oil with a Wix. Change your oil regularly and don't drive hard during the warming up process, though. The transmission made it to 223,000 before needing a rebuild, and the fluid was changed often in it. I'm going for 300,000 miles.

This mainly fits the Ford L-4. Fits a VW and Toyota also. There were 162 pages of vehicles this fits on Fram's website, I only looked at 3 pages.

Can't really beat a Fram Ultra, for filtering performance, reliability, longevity, materials it's made from, you know, all the top stuff you want in an oil filter. Some others come close enough in some sense. Amsoil EAO-series oil filters (like the EAO34 which crosses to an XG3600) is very good, but expensive. Royal Purple makes decent oil filters. @Whip City Wrencher cut open a "MicroGard Select" (o'reilly autoparts) oil filter once and it looked the cleanest & neatest inside of just about any seen, with filtering performance that is good enough, so that one is good to use too.
I use that fram filter on my car but it's not a canister style filter like that It's the new old style without the metal shell I like the lower micron rating. I've used that mobile one filter on other cars I've had It's a quality filter too
Fram Ultra is a great filter, but no way I'm running any oil or filter past 7500. Even if a UOA showed the oil was still good for say 10K, clean oil is better oil. Also filter mags are a great way to keep the oil cleaner. Our whole fleet runs them.

GT, my prius c just got totalled by a drugged up driver on Rooseveldt Boulevard in Philly who was beating her boyfriend and made a u from inner south to outer south smashing into my front.
Next auto will be either a rav4 hybrid or a camry xle hybrid and I intend to fit a amsoil bypass filter dotted with Samarium Cobalt magnets after the 90k warranty then use Blackstone Labs to test the oil (50% Amsoil Signature 0w20 and 50% Amsoil OE 0W16) every 10,000 miles.
Ideally I will be changing the oil and transmission fluid together and every 50,000 miles.
Before the warranty expires I will be changing the oil at 10,000 mile intervals using the oil blend above, my prius used 0w20 Amsoil Signature and only needed changing at 20,000 miles. Terrific stuff.
And the winner is (suspense)? Fram (applause).
Mobil looks like it is built by Purolator/Mann Hummel. They used to be built by Champ labs. I would be interested to see the Mobil compared to a Purolator 1.

I think that Fram win because the quality of the Fram looks much better than the Mobil 1 made by Purolator, I can't believe how sloppy the Mobil 1 is put together.
Is higher oil flow rate, better than filtering contaminates in engines? Which one damages engines more?

They took away the backing on the Fram Ultra, the Fram Titanium has a wire screen backing.

What's the filtering specs? 20 micron at 99%?
@@lonniebeal6032 In reference to the Microguard select, I believe it is 99% at 25 microns and between 95 and 98% at 20 microns.
I would love to find the information for the Mobile 1 and the filtering efficiency at 25 or 20 microns. Just because they rated it at 30 microns does not mean it's efficiency drops to 0 with anything smaller than 30, it will just filter less effectively at a smaller micron or could even still muster a 98% or 99%. Really depends on the tests and what their marketing department figured would look better on the box. 99% at 30 looks better to the layman than 93% at 20 for example. Not really a fan of that particular oil filter, but it passes my requirements where the Fram does not. IE. No exposed plastic bypass or cage. I'm a Motorcraft guy. The basic Motorcraft has a lower efficiency rating, but the overall construction for the price ($4 at Walmart) is what sales me along side their backflow diaphragm and upper element bypass. (Some Ford's are sensitive to the diagrams. Especially the modular V8's) Motorcraft Racing filters are impressive on the other hand.

The design change isn't controversial, Fram improved the filter element and the wire mesh is no longer necessary.

Did you check the seam on the Mobil One element ? At first look, you pointed out a gap.
This was a year ago and I don't remember, but I do regularly check the seams, and if there was a gap that went all the way thru the seam I would have pointed it out. Either way a poorly glued seam. Thanks for Watching👍

Interesting, I wonder what you think Whip. In my view adding a cellulose backing to synthetic is only bad because you than get all the downfalls and cancels out most of the good points of synthetic. For instance cellulose will restrict flow, plug quicker, absorb water and tear because of it. And it will add nothing to the filtration quality over the fully synthetic. In my opinion that is why is it far inferior to plain synthetic media

I think the numbers Manufactures put out on these oil filters are deceiving and at best misleading. Who is going to use a filter for 20,000 miles/ (Not me)! I think they should have left the Ultra alone with the wire backing. Instead, they're saying the New Ultra now has more pleats, better media, etc. so it is better than the old full synthetic media with fewer pleats. Me, Id rather the fewer pleats with a metal backing and not go 20,000 miles on an oil filter.
Yeah i agree, the fully syn media was nice. And I don't know who does 20000 miles on one filter that's crazy. I do mine every 5000Km which equates to 3100 Miles in your speak

Mobile one needs to up their QA. An oil filters primary job is to filter everything else is a gimmick. Yeah it's nice to have anti drain valves if your filter is installed upside down in engines. And by pass valves are nice if your oil filter is clogged. I would say you have bigger problems then. If the filter media isn't crimped right there is no point because unfiltered oil is entering your engine. . That alone makes Mobile 1 a failure.
I didn't like the seam either. Poorly glued.
Don’t use Mobil one filters ever. This is why. I’ll stick to Fram ultra, Ecoguard synthetic (green can) or K&n silver. But considering the Castrol next depending on the price.

Can the Fram Ultra Synthetic filter be used with Synthetic blend oils or just Full Synthetic?
Technically it's made for full synthetic oils but I have run it with blends and no issues.

As I use this number on 4 vehicles, this was of particular interest to me. They both kind of suck for the money but in different ways. I probably would not use either frankly. I think in this case the louvers would flow better. The Fram has very few holes for oil to pass thru which means most of the filter media is going unused as it is just hitting a metal wall. If there were more holes it would flow better and more media would be involved with the flow from one side to the other. The Mobile looks better overall but the media does not impress me, nor does the Frams either. Champ Purolator and Wix are still the winners for me.
Agree that the fram sure looks like it could use some more holes in the core. I like the holes over perforation, but there’s gotta be enough of em!
Yes, thanks….. about same here, as I just switched mt two Vehicles from NAPA GOLD(Wix), etc; to BOSS Purolater. Interestingly, I use OEM on Air/ Cabun Filters.
"Between the two", I'd take the now cheapened media First Brands Fram Ultra. However, for the money, not impressed with either. A shame the real OG Ultra gone now. Thanks for vid.

The Wix XP is a very good oil filter. However, the micron rating for the Wix XP is not as good as the filters in this video. Still a very well-made oil filter though. Fram for me. I'm currently using my 2nd Fram Titanium filter. I like that they listened to customers that were complaining about filter resistance to flow. The Titanium really looks to have worked on the "open flow" design. If anyone has the new numbers please link them.

Mobil filters are overpriced for what you get. I'll take the Fram Ultra or Purolator One over the Mobil filter any day. Anecdotally it seems you pay extra for the Mobil name.

I've never had issues with fram ultra, I do avoid the cheaper of their product. A filter that actually you could try cutting open (assuming you haven't) is a stp filter and a carquest one be willing to bet it's the same filter. But the ultra still has that grip on the end of it, that's so useful if a filter is in a weird spot

I've opened some STP and they look to be Champ-made and some Carquest which look to be Purolator-made.

You should probably go to a Kawaski forum and ask what others are using, I'm sure you'd get a better answer.
Fram is a better filter overall, assuming Fram claim of “above 20 microns” filtration is not a misleading marketing gimmick. 30 is above 20. 50 is above 20. The medium could be in practice 50 microns filtration, but Fram markets it as “above 20”. There is no independent lab verification of what Fram claims. As far as Mobil, it is a disappointing filter.

I’ll take the Fram Ultra all day over Mobil 1. I like the media better. But if I had my ultimate choice, I’d take the Napa Platinum. It’s one of the top filters out there next to Amsoil and Royal Purple. But the Amsoil and RP are way too expensive. And Napa Platinum is inexpensive and Napa gives a military discount.
