All I know that in over 50 years of using Fram oil filters I have never had an problem. So if you are one of those that has an issue with them then use something else. Simple as that.
A few days ago I bought the Fram ultra synthetic XG3614 at Walmart for $8.97, along with the Fram ultra premium engine air filter and Valvoline full synthetic high mileage 5W 30 oil. I was going to AutoZone and buying the exact same oil, along with the STP S3614XL for $9.99. The STP is a good filter and engineered to last up to 10,000 miles, but the Fram XG is engineered to last up to 20,000 miles and it’s at a lower price. No matter what products I use, I always change the oil every six months or within 5000 miles. I appreciate your videos.

Can't find xg for toyota hybrids
I always use Fram Tough Gaurd on all my vehicles my wife drives alot for work so I go through them pretty quick. I have never had a problem with them and I like it that they are always in stock. Also as have have said the grip ring is great!

They are both great filters, but for the price, I’d go with the Fram XG. I know the Boss has the same filter media, but XP should also have the same micron rating of 20 like the boss. Great Video🎉

The Purolator Boss is a good oil filter, the micron rating on the Boss is 99% at 25 microns.
Wix XP better filter then fram, fram is like last resort,wix XP is if you want your vehicle in good shape
Wow, I've never been on the Fram wagon and have used Wix XP for years. I noticed the Fram gasket has concentric rings as well, which help make a better seal. Never had an issue there, but it's something. Didn't realize Wix cheapened up the XP so much. Between the better micron rating, the thicker can and the grippy coating, I'm thinking my days of ordering Wix XP off rockauto and paying a bunch on shipping are over when the Ultra appears nearly identical if not superior in quality and is available anywhere.

Both filters are top shelf choices. Price wise, Fram but the build quality to the Wix. The Wix had excellent media spacing. I don't think you could make a bad choice running either of these filters. Merry Christmas to you and your family Pete.

Fram had less pleats but each one was much wider which is why the filter media's was longer with so many less pleats.

The Fram FE oil filter Series is as good as any oil filter on the market today. Not cheap though.
I really like that exterior grippy coating that Fram does on their filters. Why can't everyone do that?

I dislike the grippy stuff on the Fram. Makes using a cap wrench to remove filter sometimes impossible. The caps wrench slips on the coating. I prefer to use a cap wrench, so coating a no bueno for me.
Actually, everyone COULD put that "Grippy Stuff" on there -- but, THANKFULLY, they DON'T !!
That's why God made Oil Filter Wrenches.
I wonder if Fram patented that. Maybe the Fram web site has information about that.

Seems like Fram has really upped their game and just bare brand preference is the only reason ppl are choosing hte Wix in the comments here. I still use OEM mopar on my hemi but videos like this are really openingi my mind up on the idea that the brand isn't always the best indicator.
Yes it is obvious they just like the name.. They have no clue what they are voting for with the loser .35 filtration rating and .3 mm material.. $6 filter at most.

Thanks So much for doing this. These are the 2 filters I use. I am using the 20 micron Fram in the warm months, and the 35 micron Wix in the cold months when oil is thick like syrup at startup, in sub zero temps. The can and baseplate are slightly better on the Fram. On everything else, the Wix beats it, except for the Micron rating of Wix's 35 vs Frams 20 because of the paper media I would bet. The filter media spacing was terrible on the Fram. The 20 micron Fram would also be more restrictive to Oil flow. Also, the Wix center metal tube has so much more oil flow thru all the perferations. 95 to 101 sq inches is a toss up to me but U could say Fram is the winner. I think its negligible to have 5% more filter area but it needs all it can get with its more restriction to flow. ( If they were made with identical media a 20 micron would be more restrictive than a 35 from the start. ) These 2 have different media types though. The drainback valve is also slightly better in the Wix imho.

Excellent comparison of the feared louvered center tube to the Fram tube. The louvered tube has significantly more openings than the tube with holes. Not sure how much one can trust the O'R site efficiency rating for the XP (Napa Platinum) when Wix is very tight lipped and lists nothing on the box. That, even though O'R shows nothing great. Same as the Platinum, it looks well made. Too expensive though. A shame First Brands has cheapened the media on the Ultra, not near the filter it used to be. In a Wink of an Eye, it'll be 2023, and I still keep hearing, Fram is this, Fram is that, I'd never use a Fram, because,blah blah blah!!! Good thing the multi Millions that have and do use them, keeps Fram probably the largest filter seller in the world, (at least the USA) My eyes don't decieve me, that is one high quality Fram filter, especially for Under $10 in this inflation driven economy! Love 😘 Filter Friday, my mundane life, gets a big charge out of PETE'S hard work and his filter knowledge... If there was only the choice between these two filters, I couldn’t justify spending $7 more on the Wix XP. I would use the Fram.

Those are both good filters, I used to use the wix xp all the time, but for the price of the fram ultra synthetic I have switched over

The only time I would use a Fram is when I have a really sludgy engine and I'm cleaning up the crankcase with Sea Foam. It's cheap enough to use to catch the initial crud, but after that I change the oil and use a Wix.
For me the Fram wins this one, but I'd probably use either one. Thanks for the videos, Whip and have a Happy Holiday!! 🎀🎁

Roughly double the price though, where I live anyway - to me the fram ultra is good enough for me as I change the oil very regularly
I would definitely go with the fram, being at the wix XP has a nominal micron rating of 35.
I cannot believe they are putting material that thin on the Wix. . and they want $17 for this horrible thin material with micron 35 like a jobber filter.
I've been using the Wix XP for some time. No issues. The one that fits my Accord is under $9 at Rock auto.

Ive used orange can Fram filters since the 1990s on 8 different brands of vehicles with zero issues, except on Porsche and BMW (which required their own filters ).
An oil filter that can filter particles greater than 20 microns like the Fram in the video, is a great filter in my book. 35 microns is not ideal, that's where particles start to damage the engine over time.
Almost makes me want to try a fram ultra instead of my usual napa gold oil filter... another great job Peter...suggestion.... do some lawn mower filters.. just an idea

I'm going with the FRAM ULTRA on this one...
Although I think the WIX was pretty good too.
FRAM had a much better micron rating 20 microns vs Wix 35 microns that's nearly double that of FRAM potentially letting more harmful debris through.
Surface area 5" (5.7x") difference between the two so I don't think that was much of a factor.... Thickness of the actual filter media I gave to the FRAM.
Pressure relief valve design I prefer the WIX but not as important as micron rating. And lastly the inlet holes I give to FRAM one more than Wix plus FRAMs were elongated.

Over the years I've used all sorts of oil filters on street cars all of the way to full on racing engines. Since 1973 I've had 2 oil filters fail, and both were from Fram. One was on a street car, a PH8A on a 302 Ford in the 1990's and the other on a racing engine that I was forced to use a Fram Filter from the auto parts store. Both of them internally imploded.
The street 302 filter I think imploded as the result of something coming apart in it, but it didn't cause any engine damage. I knew something had happened because the vehicle had an oil pressure gauge and it started acting funny. So I looked into it when I got home and found the filter was imploded inside. Put on a new filter and added some oil and all was good with the vehicle for another 60,000 miles or so until I sold the car.
The racing engine issue I felt was from the larger volume of oil that the dry sump system was able to move. Since the engine was being shifted at 8,500 RPM, it was moving a lot of oil, and it just failed. The driver saw the oil pressure drop in half so he came in and told the crew about it. Fortunately it happened during a Thursday practice session. They got a WIX from a parts trailer and everything worked fine for the rest of their weekend. As a result, I made an oil filter adapter to permit the use of an HP Filter to prevent that from happening again.
In my engine life I have had engines fail in racing. Each time whatever filter was on the car captured lots of stuff until it couldn't any more and the bypass opened. But most of the crap was in the filter.
Excellent video my friend. At the moment I'm using the WIX XP. Next one I will use will be the Purolator Boss.

My opinion is they are both great, and you can't go wrong with either one, so go with the cheapest one, your vehicle probably won't know the difference.

Yeah, the Wix XP looks like a better made filter in many ways, but man.... nominal micron rating of 35... not that your engine would even care, just seems the Fram would be much better at nominal micron rating of 20, and even does decent at 15 where as XP drops to 50% at 20. Im really not a fan of Fram honestly, but their ultra line seems to do well.
Thanks!! The Wix won in my opinion for better filter material structure when magnified, it looks a lot more regularly woven and spaced. The Fram looks clumped and less orderly. The oil should flow better through the WIX as long as it doesn't get too clogged from catching all those fine particles.
The Fram Ultra micron rating is 99% at 20 microns and the WIX is 30 microns .
@@conner474 The oil flow was my main concern as the lifters rely heavily upon this, when it drops down due to any obstruction it reduces engine life, and just like an HVAC filter, if the filtration is too heavy, it back-feeds the HVAC pump, I'm seeing a similar issue in my dodge charger where the WIX filter appears to provide better flow for the engine. FYI.

@@shericharboneau5721 Th Fram has a better flow rate .I know where you are coming from as far as HVAC .But Fram Ultra is NOT obstructive . Both are good filters and you cant go wrong with either. But for the money im putting a Ultra on my car. Bob the oil guy has many threads on his site about this.Look up Ascent Filtration Testing.. Fram ultra beat every filter they tested..
@@conner474 right on thanks for the feedback, the Wix filter appears to not collapse under the pressure like the Fram did when I tried it, it caught more but also clogged in less than 5000 miles blocking flow and causing damage to the engine. I haven't seen the same flow cut-off with the WIX extreme series. FYI.
@@happydogg312 depends on the oil, a master mechanic friend of mine suggested using any oil and just changing it every 1000 miles as he had done. He owned a 1978 honda and it ran great and didn't burn oil at all. he said the concrete dusts from the roads polish the inside of the load bearing surfaces in the rotating assemblies such as the bearings and he said due to this they won't hold oil at the highest stress and pressure points after a while as well as the dusts tend to essentially grind the engine down like a lapidary paste. So Fram... yeah I used that for years in my Hondas without issue till I got my 2.7L demonic Dodge engine which takes special cares such as the WIX filter that I found appears to allow for more oil flow, better preserving the engine. The heads for example are over $1000 each used, something I don't want to replace any time soon. 167,000 miles so far.
Never have trusted a Fram filter on my vehicle. Even the “better” filters, such as this.
Definitely would choose the Wix.

Very Nice filter by Wix, but Thier Costs Keep Rising every 6 months... At the Auto Parts Store out here by us,( Hold On to your hats Folks) it's Still a "Western Auto" the Wix filter goes for close to $20 bucks with tax... I use Fram Ultra or on the older vehicle,I can't beat the Super Tech price point, for Thier 10,000 mile rated filter... When we go way into town... But to each his own, if I had my choice and cost is no object, a Purolator Boss for extended OCI range or A K&N filter for Thier stout micron rating...Mérry CHRISTmas 🌞

Just change your oil more often if you want it to last as long as possible....clean oil is key
If you change your oil and filter every 5k miles then stick with fram oil filter for saving your money

Buy a lottery ticket, you got lucky. Most OG media Ultra long gone now.Titanium following too.
If the fram was longer along the tape measure, than with all measurements being equal except for length the fram should cover more in square inches.
But it's not as wide so it comes out to have less square inches but not by much. I wouldn't even worry about that small of a difference.
Preference vs cost vs convenience but I think either filter is more than adequate for the job. Wix probably edges out the Fram IMO but not enough that I care to spend the extra money on it.
How was wix edges the fram, fram have thicker cans, has the grip textures, pretty much both similar filter media, you can buy these fram almost anywhere Walmart sells them for $8, also made in the USA Fram wins

Based on the micron rating and the similar square inches of filter media, I don’t see a reason to spend $7 more for the Wix XP unless you plan on running the XP to much longer than most oil change intervals. The Ultra looks to be built to a much higher quality than the low-end cardboard endcap Fram oil filter.
I’m sure someone here can point out more information about the Ultra on the Fram website - I have been told it is full of information and some of it might actually be there.

Efficiency rating on the WIX is pretty poor compared to other premium oil filters! I'd definitely pass on it. Why do 99%@35 microns when you can do 99%@20 microns for less money? It's a no brainer for me!

Sadly, Fram Ultra isn't available for tons of popular vehicles like Duramaxes or even most GM boat engines. 496, 502 etc. Tons of others. So Wix Regular/Napa Gold is the go to.
And sadly, the Ultra not the filter it used to be either. That is, not two layer full synthetic wire backed media of the OG Ultra. First Brands has seriously cheapened the media now.
I’m running a Fram Ultra XG9100 on my 08 GMC Duramax purchased at NM Walmart. It seems to be working ok.
I'm no longer a big Wix fan. But before everyone runs and buys the Fram based on micron rating, keep mind that highly efficient media is still utilized within Fram's flawed design, which can let dirty unfiltered oil bypass the media through the gap between that stamped metal spring and the open metal end cap. This is the same design flaw that has been carried across the entire Fram line for decades.
Not really i've personally open up these filters. The fram bottom metal end caps where the leaf springs by pass valve meets .have a ruber type seal on them
Surprised the new Fram XG still won this one.. The Wix with .3 mm thickness is just not acceptable IMO and at almost TWICE the price.. it just is not worth it IMO. .. That Wix should be around $7 with that ultra thin material.
That Wix filter looks a lot like a Boss filter. Could it be possible that Purolator now makes those? No more metal mesh but a plastic one. I mean they both are owned by the same company. Oh and the last 3 Wix filters I purchased have had the louvers not cut open correctly. The louvers are indented but not pierced thru. And all were purchased in different locations and at different times.
It could be made on the same machines? But I think they are made slightly different. I know the bypass valve and the micron rating are not the same, Purolator usually but not always have elongated inlet holes. I would take the Boss over this XP.
I prefer the holes but if a filter has louvers, definitely inspect them with a flashlight. I know it's a hassle but maybe you could bring them back, that way they'll know they are making junk, and we won't buy them. Thanks for Sharing!
The Wix and the Purolator Boss are made at separate locations on different lines. All of these oil filters are made on automated equipment that require attention to ensure it is operating properly (to design and QC standards). If you have a poorly trained or inattentive workforce you're going to have production problems that involve hundreds to thousands of finished products. Most of these plants only sample 1 in 1000 (or more) finished products in a run. It's hard to get a filter that's completely representative of the entire product line. In spite of the problems with both, the Fram looks like the better value. That plastic screen is just as functional in this application as the old metal screen, plus it can be fused to the media. It's all around cheaper for manufacturing which I'm sure they like. The cellulose backer on the Fram serves the same purpose but also adds a degree of filtration.
That is correct, the Boss, Bosch and Purloator are all made by Mann-Hummel. The Fram, Amsoil, Royal Purple and Mobil1 are all made by Champion Labs. And now Fram has the Endurance line at Walmart for $12.97 and walks all over most of them.

Several, but not all, of the details between these two filters seem very similar to the Supertech vs Mobil 1 comparison. Perhaps Wix makes Mobil 1 and Fram makes Supertech.

Here's some of what I know about who makes what. Champ Labs. makes Supertech oil filters.
Mann and Hummel own Wix, Purolator. Mobil and some others.
First Brand makes the Fram oil filters. First Brand also owns Champ Labs which makes a lot of other oil filters.

Would a filter with a lower micron rating be better than a higher number? e.g., 20 would be better than a 30 micron rating because it filters out smaller particles?

Slight differences between the 2 -- no deal-breakers -- EXCEPT the HUGE difference in Micron Ratings.
35 Microns is 175% of 20 Microns -- and we have no way to know which filter actually performs better in the field -- as per usual, it's a big-ass guessing game. 😁
No reason for me to buy either of these filters, because of my 5,000-mile OCIs -- the Bosch Premium, with it's "Made in U.S.A." and "AT 20-Micron" rating, suits me perfectly.
In passing:
Polymer = Plastic = Polymer.
The thicker gasket gives no advantage.
Wix has best Core Tube design. -- Spiral-wound core with Louvers.
Fram has larger hole area in Base Plate -- for smoother, more even flow.
The trend today is toward Extended OCIs of 15-20,000 miles -- it's f**king scary -- NO WAY would I leave oil and filter in there for 20,000 miles.
The famous 95 MERC is 27 years old -- and is now elegible for Old Age Benefits, including the warm, Arizona "Valley of the Sun" Winters.

Hopefully Santa brings you a big box of stamped leaf retainer springs and you are using garland rated at 99% for partridges down to 20 microns.
The lower line Frams are cheap crap but in this regard the Fram eats the wix for lunch.

The fram comes off easy AND goes on easy no tools ... sandpaper grip at the bottom

Fram uses slight of terminology that people miss. Instead of saying 99% @ 20 microns, they greater than 20. Does that mean filters 99% of all particulates of 20.1 microns in size. No. They just say that at some size greater than 20 microns, they achieve that efficiency. That could be 30, 40 or even 50 microns. WIX is specific and say at 30 microns they are able to achieve that efficiency. For Fram, at 20.1 microns they are possibly only 97%. Be wary of filters with high number of pleats, or dense folds. Once saturated and under pressure the media expands and closes off the outer folds, leaving top outer edges. I have a cartridge WIX XP where it swelled up, restricted oil flow and caused lifter noise on cold starts. Replaced with oem and problem solved.

Curiosity killed the cat, why does the fram have more filter but less sq inches, pleats shouldn't play that big of a difference the wix was smaller and thinner.

The Fram is 1.80" wide x 53" long = 95.40 sq.in. The Wix is 2.11" wide x 48" long =101.28 sq.in.

I’m disappointed about the wix filter. They have gone down hill since Mann Hummel bought them. No coil spring, and filtration level = to toilet paper and high prices. Not worth it. I’d rather run Walmart filters.

oil filter is cheap compared to a new engine. I'll take wix all day every day, and I do. Unless you're on of those guys that change vehicles like their boxers and than this doesn't apply to them. The only thing Fram has going for it is it's slick marketing these days, riding on their coat tails from days gone by when it use to be the game of the town.
To me the fram ultra has downgraded since they did away with the wire backing. The wix xp media looks better and at least it's backed and doesn't tear as easy. Wix XP for the win on this one 👍

The trend has been toward the elimination of the bulky Wire Screen Backing -- to make room for MORE PLEATS and a larger filtering area -- less likely to clog.
The Polymer Mesh Backing is thin and stiff, which is all that's needed to prevent tearing of the media.

You are correct, The Ultra media has been significantly cheapened from the OG two ply full synthetic wire backed media it had. The wire backing was needed for support of full synthetic media. Now it uses a thin blended media to back the thin synthetic layer. XP/(Platinum) media does 'look' much more substantial.

Well no where to find a pressure drop vs flow rate !!! It can be better filtration but higher pressure drop when pump is not ready compensate for a pressure drop. So your assessment is just mechanical design nothing more. People don't trust more or less filtration as pressure drop is a key

20k mile rating doesn't mean you should use it for 20k miles. Just like 200-300 HP cars. People are never going to use the full 300 HP. Probably use just 100-150 or less HP because they only do commute driving. But it's better to buy a car with more horsepower than you need so it doesn't struggle than a car with just enough horsepower that needs to use all its power. So it's better to buy a 20k oil filter and change it at 10k than to buy a 10k oil filter and change it at 10k. Like a tow strap rated for X pounds. You don't want to put X load on it, you want to put on a load that is less than X.
Fram about half price. These go into the trash at about 3000 miles. Why pay more.
That was not the synthetic fram filter you showed at the end that was a different filter it was all old and dirty come on dude
