Thank you all for your support! We are testing Air Filters Next! Any brands you want to see?
Would love to see k&n vs a stock filter.
K&N, Supertech, FRAM, Ecogard, STP, Purolator
Why are you not using wix XP for the oil filter test
@@j_zales1390 they have already tested the WIX XP previously. Go back to their earlier videos to see more.
Toyota brand would be great
This channel is a must watch for true car enthusiasts.
Thank you so much! Your support is greatly appreciated!
I swapped to a Purolator Boss oil filter after watching your previous videos, and I am still using them. Thank you for sharing all of this information.
On the oil side, I had been using Pennzoil Ultra Platinum, but recently swapped to Valvoline Restore and Protect.
The visit by the Motor Oil Geek to Valvoline’s facility to learn a bit more about this oil was a very interesting video. I am intrigued
Why,? Project Farm's test shows the Pennzoil Platinum as the best oil.
You should add Anti-Drain Back valve performance to your testing procedure, which is crucial to prevent dry starts. Maybe by installing the filter base upside down and test how much oil, if any, drains back the inlet after a period of time, or reverse flowing the filter to see if any oil gets past the valve.
that would be a very nice comparison, me personally I think toyota filters should be highly ranked on that regard, their ADBV works very well
$40-90k for a vehicle and your going to cheap out on one of the most critical parts of your engine to save 5-10 bucks every 6 months!!? Change the oil every 5000 miles and use HIGH quality oil and filters is very cheap insurance. Use your brain people...
Oil filters aren’t as important as people think.
Aircraft engines used screens till the late 70’s.
The oil filter didn’t raise the TBO, time before overhaul.
Every 5k miles? Maybe for some vehicles. But for me I change my oil every 2500k miles. Then again I’ve spent so much money on my engine I just want the best lubrication and filtration for the motor to keep it happy.
I was just checking your channel earlier today to see if I had missed a video. Was very happy to see you pop up in my feed shortly after!
Same
I love this channel, thank you so much for all of your hard work
New video been waiting!🤙🏽
Thanks.... awesome oil filter testing.
Than YOU! Your support is much appreciated!
Thanks, BR, for all the great work you guys so!
Thank you so much for watching and supporting us! Greatly appreciated
keep this type content rolling, great content
Man this channel rocks, I wish you guys nothing but success.
Thank you so much for your support! your comment means a lot to us and keeps us motivated.
Please test the Purolator One next!
They tested in one of the previous videos
@@thatcrazyfriend It is not shown in the results. The Boss is shown, but I don't see the One.
@@tid418 gotcha yea understand
Outstanding!! Thank you, guys...
Thank youuuu!!! Really appreciate you watching!
Great video - I’m still waiting for the test of an OEM Honda filter (bought from a dealer of course)
We’ve been waiting! Appreciate this one. Shared! Some engine oil testing and even oil additive or engine flush testing would do great! Especially Prolube and BG products.
Thanks for the great ideas! I know it's been awhile and we really wish we could post more often, but being full time engineers and spending time with the family really doesn't leave much time in the week. Hopefully one day we can do this full time and bring you guys awesome content at a more consistent manner.. thank you a gain!
Wix and Napa used to be the same but not anymore. Mann humel bought wix and made in USA. The Napa is made in China.
True. And they should be using the Wix XP.
Napa filters now appear to be made by MicroGuard. Royalty Auto Service channel was the first to bring this to light when Napa recalled their entire stocked inventory.
@@shakerman55 Wix XP has been downgraded to blend media witn no more backing.
@@memopadilla5931 Is that bad? I've been using Wix XP for years.
Huh?? My local Napa still supplies me all NAPA Gold filters which are made by Wix.
Great Great resource, keep going.
When I worked at AutoZone back in the early 2010’s, I was there when they came out with the STP Extended Life oil filters. I loved using them! The other guys teased me about it, but I thought that it was better than the Bosch for about the same price.
Amazing high quality content! Was hoping Project Farm would cover oil filters, but after finding you guys I can see why hasn't bothered.
9.99? Napa here is over 13!
excellent work. thanks for sharing.
Thank you so much for your support!
Wix, Mann and Puralator are all made by Mann Hummel. But the design of the filters and build locations of the filters are changing. I literally have three filters with the same part #, all Wix filters that are totally different. One is the old Wix I'm used to with the seven round holes "made in the USA". One that looks like a euro Mann Hummel filter with 5 holes half covered by a metal ring " made in China" and one that looks like a Puralator filter with 7 oval holes "made in USA" Things are getting confusing right now with Mann Hummel's product line.
Going to go with the Boss filters from now on until I see change in build design and or build location. Please keep updating you findings ..... Mann Hummel seems to be in a state of change at the moment with their production design and production facility locations.
Thank you for reviewing the filter I requested (STP XL). While I've been using them with no issues and the oil looks fairly clean after a 5k mile change interval, now I'm likely going to spend the extra couple bucks per change going with the Purolator Boss because it *still* appears to be the top performer overall.
Of course, thanks for the suggestion! Glad we were of help. Remember that the most i.portant thing is keeping up with maintenance, but yeah the Purolator is definitely better. Thanks for watching!
Already way ahead of you with the 'keeping up with maintenance' bit. That's why I do 5k mile oil changes and not the 10k mile that my owners manual says to do (2019 Ford Fusion Hybrid).
One concern I have about your testing method for checking how much the filter isn't filtering is that some of these filters can contain much more before reaching the stopping point on flow rate. Are you taking measurements at specific intervals after adding a measured total of dust or after it maxes out on capacity? If it's the latter then any filters which hold less before reaching max psi will have a bias.
Love these videos! You're one of only 2 people I've seen do actual scientific research on oil filters, keep up the great work!
You should definitely test the FRAM Titanium from Advanced Auto Parts next. A guy from Ascent Filtration did an ISO 4548-12 Oil Filter Lab Testing Comparison using professional equipment, and the old FRAM Ultra got hands down the best filtration results of an oil filter I've seen. Luckily, FRAM didn't abolish this amazing filter and they instead rebranded it as the Titanium with the exact same design as the old Ultra. By comparing and contrasting the data from both you and Ascent Filtration, in comparison to the new FRAM Ultra that you tested, the Titanium should have better DP, slightly worse capacity, and his test showed 99% filtration at 15 microns. If there's any filter that can take the crown from the Purolator Boss, it's the FRAM Titanium!
They did abolish the filter. Titaniums on the Advanced Auto Parts shelf are old stock. New Titaniums have the new design just like Fram Ultra. Still plenty good though.
I heard that as well over a year ago. But I just bought 2 different models of the Titanium filter and they both still have the metal backing screen. So I suppose not all the models are the same
Love this series guys…I know you tested an AC Delco filter but it was without an anti-drainback valve. Can you test something like the PF63 which is a very common filter application across GM as it has a synthetic media and has an anti-drainback valve
Great addition to the oil filter series! Any plans on branching out to other test like cabin/engine filters?
Hey thanks for watching! And yes, this is actually our last oil filter one ( for now) we are testing air filters next! Taking suggestions in the pin comment! Again, thank you for the support!
Thank you!
Thank you!!!! Your support is always appreciated!
Would love to see other car products tested too, like both cabin filters and engine air filters and so on
Hey, thank you so much for watching! Yes, this was our last oil filter one (for now) we will be testing engine air filters next. Always taking recommendations so thank you!
Love you man will u be able to do the best fuel system cleaner test please 🥺
I like your final ranking table, it would be really interesting to see if the premium filters WITHIN A BRAND are worth the price difference -- Purolator Classic -vs- Purolator One -vs- Purolator BOSS would be a great video given the BOSS is the chart leader.
I would like to see how the Purolator One filter does in comparison to the Boss. My guess is that it will be close to the Fram Endurance and push the Boss down to 4th place in the efficiency ratings.
People be putting a restrictive oil filters and are suprised they get knock at a dry start just put a cheap one and change your oil
i love your testing/comparison videos ! would you be able to test OEM oil filters from bmw, honda, mazda please? i wonder how they compare to these
Great Video. Thanks for providing data instead of just putting your face in front of the camera and rambling about your opinion for 10 min. trying pass it along as fact or truth.
Thank you so much for watching and supporting. So glad you enjoyed!
You should test Service Champ filters since alot of quick lubes use those
I think your testing will be a kick in the A for the manufacturers to improve their products! I have 2K miles on my orange can of death (Fram Extra Guard) that I ignorantly bought because Autozone didn't carry the Purolator Pure One that I used to buy from Pep Boys. Another 1K miles and the Boss goes in.
Sick one boys!!!!!!
Thank you so much! Always appreciate your support
Hey a suggestion, ive seen some people claiming old filters were better, any chance of being able to get some vintage oil filters for testing?
id love to see MicroGard Select oil filter be tested thats what i run on my performance engines.
The legend is back 🙌
🤣🤣Thank you so much for watching. Really wish we could post more but doing YT and full time engineer is quite a lot. Hopefully we get to do this full time in the future! Next up...air filters
@@BrandRanks results from the lab taking weeks to come back doesn't help either. thank you and look forward to new uploads then 👍will share with friends and family
With the Baldwin having such a high particle count, Wouldn't you think that it is doing a better job of filtering out the particles. The other three are allowing the particles to pass on through. I don't get it.
The particle count is in the oil where it should've been filtered out. Baldwin is the only one that did worse than my Fram Extra Guard.
Is that an overall ranking in order at the end of the video? If not, where can I find an overall ranking list
*JP: Since Oct 2022 I truly appreciate your testing efforts and results. Big however is that hose kink leading to your catch funnel. Sorta renders your upstream ball valve a bit redundant. Pretty sure that is not your intention. Cheers!*
Hey! Thank you so much for supporting us since the beginning! Much appreciated. Yeah, we went through many iteration trying to build a rig that looked pleasant and at the same time fit in a wall that would frame well for the video. We tried several hoses also and some broke. You all get to see the end result but it was quite a bit of work to get this all working. That ball valve was actually quite necessary to control the flow rate, so we can do our hot and cold flow tests. Yeah we could've just linked the hose but then you'd see one of us linking the hose for. Awhile while we read a stabilized result. We want to always be transparent and show you everything so we used the ball valve so you could see how the flow changes on the flow meter on the right as we actuate the ball valve going upstream to the catch can. Again, thank you so much for all your support and feedback!
@@BrandRanks *Thanks for replying. My only criticism was the kink in the hose, not of your process, presentation or methods. Cheers!*
How does the Wix compare to the Wix XP ?
really hope one day you guys will do the "cartridge" style filters
Same here, my car uses this style.
Yes this is awesome
Thanks for watching and supporting the channel!
I'd like to see this test done with a K&P Engineering filter too. That would be rad.
How about cartridge style filters?
Can you do the oem Honda oil filter 🙏
You should do the same for ATV oil filters and oils
I only use NOS Pulolator or Wix filters
Thinking HOT flow makes a big different if always driving for a long time.
Would like see more car band oil filters. Would like see diesel and motorcycle oil filter
1:03 Not anymore. Royalty auto service did a video on this recently (We Talked To Napa About The Filters… Here’s The Update!) and I guess premium guard now makes oil filters for napa. Not sure if they're the only supplier or if they are multiple.
It seems like MOBIL 1 is the best OVERALL for protection and hot and cold flow... when compared to the other top ones. It's not as restrictive..
Do all these filters have the same bypass valve pressure rating? Wouldn't that skew some of these results?
as normal you did not disappoint thank you for a new great video,
Thank you so much for always being present and supporting us! Next up we have air filters, very excited to switch it up a little
@@BrandRanks air filter is a great idea
Shouldn’t the filter that has the most contaminants be the best filter?
That makes sense to me. I don't understand how in the smallest micron category, the smallest number is the better performing filter. 🤷🏻♂️
i want this channel to do well. as a tip you should show all the filters you have tested so far in the video icon along with your face with each updated oil filter video. it will being more views (according to videos i have watched about increasing views strategies
Thank you so much for supporting us and the recommendation. We are still learning and trying new stuff, including changing the thumbnails up. Yeah this last one is not doing as good so we may change up the thumbnail and see. Again, thank you for taking the time to write this comment and support us.
As a service manager of a Napa Autocare Center. I can attest to ordering a Napa gold filter and getting a Wix filter with a Napa part number on it.
Filter makers I want a filter with #1 ranking in each category. Get going. Fram, make your new Fram Endurance a 1/2 inch to 3/4 inches taller. Will increase flow in all cases while keeping fine particle filtration. Go Fram.
Please review these for the ongoing list. Carquest Standard, Carquest Premium, Fram Drive, Fram Force and Fram Titanium all from Advance Auto Parts.
Thanks 👍
FRAM Please take the Endurance filter add an extra 1/2 of height . Then you can win every category. We will buy it.. Endurance needs better Hot flow numbers.
Have you considered a video where you check consistency of the filters over time? Perform the same tests for the top 5 an additional 3 times and taking the average of the results. How far does that deviate from your initial results?
Kind of what logic would dictate......... A filter with better flow will allow more particles to pass. Only way to combat that is to use more restrictive media, BUT to add lots more media to make up for the flow rate.
Wix XP should be in the line up. Designed for better flowing synthetic oil.
Hey, make sure to check out our other videos in the series, we included the Wiz XP! Thanks for watching

Darn. Sad to hear. Another good one sliding down the hole.
How about OEM filters, AC Delco, denso Toyota, honda etc
Can you try MOPAR filters, please?
Another nice test. I have to ask where these filters are made? I think Wix and Napa moved to China.
WRONG!!! still made in NC, USA Even their PRO TEC shop filters are made in USA
Mopar oil filters and the SRT version!
Any chance you could do an analysis of diesel truck filters? baldwin, donaldson, luberfiner etc. There is nothing on youtube comparing them like you do.
How can Wix XP and Toyota change 1st & 2nd place in this video compared to last video.
Baldwin shows that BT223 to Absolute at 40micron. I believe BX 75 if IIRC. Thats not that good but Baldwin filters vary a great deal I;m assuming based on the OEM spec they originally made the filter for.
I have a dodge with a Baldwin that is BX75 at 30 micron
My wifes car Chevy has a Baldwin that is BX75 at 27 micron
Bx75 is 98.7% removal of all particle sizes from the oil filter testing
Their specs vary considerably depending on what manufacturer they are making the filter for
I wish you re-test the purolator boss, just to make sure that the results are similar.
I have yet to have a problem with any oil filter ! My 94 chevy s10 2.2 has 661,000 miles on her and 23,000 hrs of use ! I'll stay with the fram ultra syn ! $7 ! Best filter for the buck !
I use bosch filters on my infiniti, Kia and my zero turn mower, with zero issues
can you test out motomaster oe plus oil filter?
Where is the Microguard Select?
I really want to see an OEM Subaru filter. There is so much controversy surrounding the OEM Subaru filter being so good and having the “right bypass pressure”. I’d like to see it proven or disproven. I personally believe the high bypass pressure is due to the poor filter media flow rate, not special oil system needs of the Subaru engines.
DO A VALVOLINE FILTER
Try a Denso oil filter vs Toyota oil filter
Why you never tested Mahle?
Next do diesel oil filters! Like from CAT
Wix or amsoil ea
AC Delco Upf48 and Upf48r test please!!!
looking at the final graph, it seems that filters with the least efficiency in filtering (redundance sorry) have the best flow and capacity, and the same goes the other way, the filters with the better media have decreased flow and capacity...
