I’m going to keep using it. Metal backing or not, it’s still a filter and regardless of its run time, change every 5k. No issues. Too many folks deep diving into something that’s not an issue but making it a huge issue. Imagine driving around all day, worried about what your filter is doing. Most people have other more important things to worry about.

Changing out that filter every 5k is a waste. You could do that with a basic jobber.
@@generalzod7959 not really going to sweat it over a couple bucks. I’m usually running Pennzoil Ultra Platinum and Pennzoil Platinum in my cars. The Ultra is overkill, but again, $2 difference.
@@Dick_Nixon Oddly enough, it turns out PUP has a lower HTFS and somwhat inferior valvetrain protection than regular PP. It does excel in cold starts and slightly better add pack, but overall PP tends to score better in many areas. There are now far superior products on the market to PP, PUP, etc that are much better at controlling timing chain and valvetrain wear. Depending on what you are driving, and how much trouble free milage you wish to attain, it DOES very much matter what oil and filter you choose...

Once you get combustion gasses, moisture from condensation and blowby in the oil creating acidic conditions, plus the additive package is worn out, no filter is going to help with that. It's cost benefit. Some of these extended change intervals are crazy. 10k or 20k miles. Sure, that's what the manufacturer recommends. It's a sales point and helps them sells cars 2 ways. Lower perceived maintenance costs and lower equipment lifespan so they can sell more cars. Not that long ago 'Normal' driving was considered 'severe' based on the manufacturer's recommendations. With the advent of the standardized 1/16" ring packs in an effort to reduce internal friction to squeak out the most MPG for CAFE standards you'll see less combustion gas control and ring life. If you ever looked at any of these new long drain interval engines there's a very pronounced brown varnish everywhere. Everything wears out in time even good oil. Especially at the high operating temperatures of modern engines.

Time will tell if the new media holds up as well as the old did with the metal backing. If you go by what Fram says, the filtration numbers should be a little better for particles under 20-microns. Thanks Again!👍🙌

It's like they didn't even care, they can call it a blend all they want but 1 micro worth of synthetic media glued to the front of a traditional cardboard filter doesn't make it anything but a traditional carboard filter in my opinion.
They had a great thing going with the original Ultra, people loved it, it changed many folks opinion of the brand, and the only possible reason anyone would change a very popular product which sold hand over fist would be to penny pinch the materials, and hope no one noticed the bait 'n switch.
Every company exists to make a profit, these things sold like crazy, and they expect up to believe they, out of the kindness in their heart decided to improve the filter even more for the same price ... in this economy?

I liked the old Fram Ultra also.
Funny thing, over the weekend I made a Video with the Ultra vs. Titanium. The Titanium is still being made the same way as the old Ultra. Thick filter media with a metal screen backing. I don't know if they are all this way, but this one was. I have to open up some more to find out. The video will be shown on Friday, September 9th.

The other (previous) has superior thicker glass media and metal backing. New media completely different than previous.

After about a year now using these, and cutting every one of them open, i can confirm they are a decent filter. Like others i am not happy that the metal backing is gone for keeping the pleats spaced apart, however there is always amsoil and royal purple filters. I think amsoil might be one of the few left still using a metal mesh backing, but alas some of their filters are now e-cores, and im not a fan of e-cores for winter climates like mine. These filters do seem to collect a fair amount of contaminants, if your engine is sludged and you have switched oils to a high detergent type, i would recommend changing at least the filter early depending on your sludge concetration. These new XG filters do excel in sheer capacity with more media and pleat count, i would say they are an "improved synthetic blend with added full synthetic top layer". They are good at catching crap, however - they are good at catching crap...

The Fram Ultra Synthetic Filters seems very decent quality wise
Appreciate this. I’ve been a fan of the fram ultra since they sold out in 2014. With them taking this new route I’ll be switching back to the Napa platinum (wix xp) and the puralator boss.

This filter is an improvement because the steel screen was rubbing up against the metal tube. Which caused friction like a metal file between the two metals. That caused bits of metal to get into the oil. No metal screen problem solved.

I think the problem is the filter media is so fine and filters so well that it plugs up faster and many enshrines today are plagued with oil starvation issues especially with the longer oil change intervals so they had to put more filter media in the filter to handle the longer intervals…

Even if the new filter material is strong enough to not need a steel mesh, I might prefer the peace of mind still having it. I'd like to see the data but I'm sure it's proprietary.
The mesh isn't necessary and only takes up space. Fram would not have been able to add more filter media to increase the filtration surface area with it still there. The filter already had, and still has, a metal core which will stop the filter media from ever buckling and collapsing inward. A metal mesh wrapped around a metal core is flat out redundant and superfluous. This was a change for the better.
I like your oil filter reviews however i would love if you would go a bit further and measure the pressure it take to push the oil through the filters and how this oil filters actually preformed verified by Blackstone laboratory because that would be very useful information and would help make buy the best oil filter possible without guessing witch is really the best filter.

Yes I prefer the metal backing, but, if there’s more media and it’s an improved media with the plastic mesh, I’d take that. More chance of damage from contaminants then chance of the filter collapsing

Your newer filter with no screen has a date code 6/22/21, I have an XG10575 with date code A12641 (9/21/21) in the new box but with the metal screen visible through the center tube holes. I ordered more from Amazon and received date code A12852 (10/12/21) with no metal screen. Strange your filter older than mine had the change, but mine didn't. Glad to see the media is longer and still dual layered, but I read that the new media is a synthetic blend, while the old, wire stayed media was full synthetic. This is borne out in your comparison, where the new media has a brown (possibly cellulose?) backing, where the older one looks more pink. Thanks for doing all this.

The newest XG10575 I have copyright 2019 has only one address on it: 3255 West Hamlin Road, Rochester Hills, MI 48309. I have 2 older filters, not the same number, copyright 2017, and they only have one address: 28399 Cedar Park Blvd., Perryburg, OH 43551-4864. Maybe those are the two plants?

I just looked yesterday at a XG9100, which is the Duramax filter, it has the metal screen. It was the new box that lists the perfect seal and not the screen. My guess is the big filters still include it.

There’s a reason why they removed the metal backing. These old Fram filters are known to destroy engines because parts of that metal mesh come apart and get lodged in the engine under heavy load. I like the new one. That’s why no other filter brand uses metal mesh like that.

I’ve literally never heard of that happening ever… seems like a made up story for that steel mesh to come apart… I just can’t see that happening. I’ve been using them for over 12 years and every one has been cut open. Never an issue. They always look the same.
@@jordanmarling7947 obviously if it happens to 100% of the Fram filters that would be a major problem and would be discontinued. Just do a basic google search it has destroyed many engines. I have seen it more commonly on high performance where there’s higher oil pressure

I just got the new version of fram ultra xg 10575 and looked inside the filter and I can see a metal screen in this one.
Then you got one of the old filters in a new box, nothing wrong with that. Both oil filters versions should do a good job.
It may take a while before all the old filters are used up, depending on where you get them.
I thought all the old ones would be sold by now.

So I just confirmed my Fram ultra box I just purchased says "perfect seal gasket" and it still came with the wire backing.

Change in color on the bypass valve probably means they changed that material too.
(The Valve Itself? I don't know. They look the same, except for the center color change.)
The filter media has changed. Both have two layers. The new one looks to have a stiffer darker layer and a lighter softer layer fused together, while the older version has 2 soft layers fused together.

The metal wire screen backing was a TEMPORARY measure -- until they could find, test, and adapt the manufacturing process to include the stiff polymer backing that took it's place.
We were TOLD that "The Wire Screen is better!", but it's NOT.
We were TOLD that "The Coil Spring is better!", but it's NOT.
It seems that old beliefs die REALLY hard !!
I think our shop will stick to the Super Tech.Synthetic Oil Filters From Wally World..

I emailed FRAM regarding the removal of the metal reinforcement screen and here's their response:
"Thank you for your feedback. The Ultra Synthetic oil filter change is actually and upgrade. That wire mesh was only there to support the old synthetic media. Purely structural, it had no impact on filtration. We have replaced it with an additional layer of synthetic media which is both stiffer, and increased the pleat counts. These changes improve filtration efficiency by roughly 3% in the 10-15 micron ranges while keeping the same extended life."

@@frankbotelho7256I still like Fram Ultra, they removed the wire screen reinforcement but did increase the filtering capacity by adding more filter media.
I also like the Fram racing filter, it has a cellulose/synthetic blend media. It has a metal screen built on the bypass valve, metal end caps, increase oil capacity and a high burst strength can. Its a bit larger so you'll have to check if it can fit your vehicle.
I would be very interested to see if the FRAM Titanium's still have the metal screen. I wouldn't be as upset if the Titaniums still had it, because at least you would still have an option. But if they took the screen out of both then I would be pretty upset.

My wife's Lexus has a cartridge filter. I always hated cartridge filters. But, atleast I can take themof the box and compare at the time of purchase.
Good news that filter will work fine, and will protect your engine. However with the quality of workmanship going down hill, probably won't bode well for those who want the 20K change intervals.
Maybe it's time to consider the Fram EG, conventional oil, and going back to change intervals of 5K.

I've been doing 5k intervals but I only do a 10k filter change. As long as the new Fram Ultra is good for the 10k change, then I'm still good with it.

The new media is still inferior to the old one because it is thinner and made of cheaper material. It is definitely not robust enough to last 20K without the metal screen. Some other RUclipsr's who cut open filters, who are Wix or Napa or K&N fanboys will open their favorite filter, then open the Fram Extra Guard, Fram's basic line of filters, then poo poo the Fram as being an inferior product. They completely ignore the fact that the Fram Extra Guard is Fram's basic line of filters, so it doesn't have the fancy frilly extras their favorite filter has. But they never dared compare their filter to the Ultra Synthetic Fram filters, which is the target market Fram filter makes to be direct competition to their fanboy filters, because they know their filters will fall short in comparison. Whip City Wrencher DOES DARE TO MAKE THAT COMPARISON, and may the chips fall where they will.
It's kind of sad that they changed the filter media and dropped the wire mesh. I had commented in the XG7317 filter cut open from August 13, about the media being a "Cheapest Negotiated Contract" item, not being manufactured by Fram directly, just assembled into their filters by Fram. It's a loss for the filter line in my opinion, but I will still push the XG filter line as the best value option of the high end filters sold at Walmart. The other 2 lines being Mobil 1 and the K&N SO series filters. (That line I believe is currently only sold at Walmart and doesn't have the little hex head end on the filter to put a wrench on for removing).
I used to say the Fram Ultra Synthetic was superior to any other premium brand oil filter on the market, but now I'll say they are just as good as them.

Even the basic Fram orange box filter has to at least meet those same standards or it can't be sold in the United States.
Can anyone recommend a quality oil filter that’s good for synthetic oil that most people say is good , even running a premium full syn oil I still change every 5000kms
Since my cars warranty won't allow 20,000 miles, I will be using the XG series unless I find something better.
I dont know why guys are crying about the screen metal mesh missing.this component have nothing to do with the filtration process,the new one have dual layers ,double filtration,strong enough to do this job with out any metal support,way to go Fram, the XG ultra synthetic oil filters are one of the best on todays market.
The reason some are crying is the filter media was backed by a metal screen which made it impossible to tear. The old media also had a duel layer. I could not find a link to BITOG for the new filter specs. Is ther a difference between qouting a percentge at a specific moron and one above a certain micron. The label says 99% greater than 20 micron, but that is not the same as absolute effiency at a micron size. According the box, it could achieve it is somewhere above 20 microns, could be 25, or 30. A lot of companies avoid using the term absolute because it has a specific meaning, and limites their marketing language.
According to Fram, the New filter media is supposed to be a little better below 20 microns.

The new Ultra has over 50% more filtering area, and is FAR superior to the old model in particle storage capaciity.
@@SlikLizrd, I agree with you that the new one has more filtering media but they lower the quality of the media, it is now cellulose and a thin layer of synthetic fiber, I agree with you that the mesh doesn't improve the quality of the filter it is there only to support the media, I am fine with a plastic mesh, like the Purolator Boss or Wix XP if needed, I personally prefer a plastic mesh, if it helps keep the pleats evenly spaced, but if the media is strong enough then it is not needed, I am no expert in hydrodynamics but I know that liquids take the path of least resistance so I want those pleats as even as possible, and about your comment for the use of a leaves spring instead of sping, leaves springs are cheaper to produce than a coil spring because a coil spring needs to be heat treated and those leaves sping are only made Carbone manganese steel. so it is purely a cost-cutting measure, and I like to ad if it was improved it be written all over the box NEW AND IMPROVED! but they don't mention anything they made the change and no word about it? if this doesn't make you a bit suspicious of what is going on? I always give the benefits of the doubt and before I saw this I thought that Fram had improved their quality but now I am not so sure about it, and I like to know where did you get those numbers since it is not published anywhere?

In my observation, the previous Ultra is clearly the superior filter construction. Added media pleating area to the new Ultra doesn't tell the whole story. The previous Ultra outer layer is obviously significantly thicker/deeper and it's two ply synthetic. So the added pleating may not mean much as synthetic is "depth" media". By that standard, the original XG is the winner. You said, " you can get the new version of the Fram (Ultra) for $10.97". Others can if they choose, I won't be. Let the beta testers run the new Ultra to the rated 20k miles and see what it looks like. See how that 'holding capacity' compares to the 'real original' Ultra. As always, thanks for the video.

Well, those of us that can't run 20k between changes, and wouldn't because of how long that would take, will be using the Ultra for the 99% at 20 micron efficiency, especially since they are under $10.
I never said the new Ultra had to be run 20k, simply that 'I' wouldn't be a beta tester for that oci/fci. The OG Ultra had already proven many times over it could easily do that interval. Really since I won't be buying the cheapened (NOT 2 ply full synthetic) media Ultra now, couldn''t care less what others choose to do with it.

The Metal mesh backing kept pleat conformity and strength from collapse. It kept media strong from ripping. This is just another cheap out by FRAM at the price you pay for the top-of-the-line Ultra. Me personally done with FRAM Ultra. Purolator BOSS best filter out there in my opinion. The filter is built like a tank. The base plate and can a lot thicker than all other filters. The gasket is acrylic for high temp. The media wont rip which is full synthetic, and mesh backed. Folk's research and watch videos for yourself. Purolator invented the oil filter.

The 3 filter lines with Fram are each targeted at a specific market.
The XG line is Fram's premium filter line, and is marketed to compete with Wix, Napa Gold and K&N, along with any other "premium grade" filter.
The TG (Tough Guard) is Fram's heavy duty filter line. I push that line as a 4X4 application, being a very durable filter.
The Extra Guard line is Fram's basic filter. Still a high level of quality, but without some of the higher end features the other higher end filters may come with.
Several years ago, Fram upgraded all their filter lines with synthetic anti-drainback valves. That was done due to the fact that most modern vehicles are coming out requiring synthetic oil, which provides a longer oil change interval. The older rubber valves will start to break down after a period of time being exposed to harsh oil properties, especially when the oil gets a bit older. Silicone doesn't suffer from that same degradation. So even the Extra Guard now has a silicone valve. Fram also upgraded the filter media in the Extra Guard to a resin blend which gives it a finer filtration rating and longer oil change interval.
Fram has been around for a long time, they were the first aftermarket oil filter manufacturer out there, so they pretty much corner the market. A lot of people don't like Fram, but my family has used Fram filters on the farm for over 70 years, and we've never had an engine go bad from the filters. My Grandpa even used to have the Gambles Hardware Store in my hometown where he featured Fram filters (that was when Fram only had the Orange filters), and he never had a customer complaint about them. They work and they are good filters.

A lot of people will poo poo fram filters because they want to push their own favorite fan-boy filters, like Wix, Napa Gold, K&N, Amsoil, pick your premium brand. However they usually use the basic orange Fram to make their comparison. I tend to challenge them to do a comparison using the Ultra Synthetic Fram compared to their favorite filters. They pretty much don't accept the challenge.
So, I prefer to give everyone the info no one else wants out there.
My guess is that fram is removing the mesh screen only for the ultra. Now only the fram titanium will have a mesh screen. Marketing purposes makes sense, size ultra vs titanium is identical

I think the New Fram Ultra is still a good oil filter, just not as good as it was. The filtration numbers are the same 99% at 20 microns.
I'm going to try one in my next oil change, but that won't be for a while. Time will tell after opening up some used Ultras and see how they look, whether I like them as much as I did.

I think the prices are the same. Depends on which filter number you buy, the XG10575 in the video goes for $10.97.If you buy an XG8A it goes for $8.97.

All this type of testing is not really meaningful. All that matters is how well the filter filters, and that can only be done by testing how well a filter, filters, not how it looks. Make a pump that mimics the oil pump in an engine, mix several typical engine debris in the oil, cycle a set number of times and examine the oil afterwards.
True opening them up doesn't tell how well they filter, but at least we see how they are made.
Fram in this case says the New Ultra filters a little better.

I like the metal mesh screen but, I also think it's probably unnecessary. The full synthetic media is highly resistant to tearing as opposed to paper media. Therefore, the likelihood of a catastrophic failure is extremely unlikely. I bet fram tested this new model filter many times before going ahead with the new design and if they feel the mesh screen isn't needed anymore, I'll take their word on it.
But, some people are stuck on optics and believe in things that aren't necessarily true. Things like coil spring drain back valves being better than leaf spring or metal endcaps being better than fiber endcaps.
It is not full synthetic. A blend of cellulose and synthetic that is why it tears easy as done in the video and metioned,

Probably saved a lot of money by taking all that metal mesh out. They probably made up some structural rigidity from adding more pleats but doesn't seem like a equal trade off. No thanks on the new one. Why can't I pay another dollar and get metal mesh and pleats?

@@TranslatedAssumption ever since royal purple got bought out they became trash. Sad to say. Fram got bought out in 2014 by trico and have improved. Puralator has had tearing issues however they’ve made recent changes so I’m not sure if they still do or not. I saw a in detail test result and the Fram ultra has more filtration with nearly as much flow rate as the wix xp.

Let the engine warm up a bit before driving like a teenager. Is there really a need to jump lanes to get in the car in front of you just to sit at the next stop light ? O'Reilly Auto Parts stopped selling Fram all together saying the media is cardboard and will not be sued because of a engine blowing up because of Fram oil filters construction. I have used Fram and Wix oil filters for years and have had no problems.
....does the metal screen even really matter? if anything, i see it as an unnecessary source of resistance to oil flow. you can also tell they were able to increase the amount of surface area of the filter media *because* of how much space the metal mesh took up. also, it's not like the filter media is going to buckle and collapse inward with the metal core still there in the center of the filter. the Fram Ultra still seems like one of the better made filters. the updated filter media on the Ultras also filters slightly better than they did before. everyone always gets so histrionic about oil filters ditching metal mesh backings when they were never really a great thing to begin with. and pro-tip: if you don't want your filter media to tear, then don't cut the filter open and tear it. the mesh backing makes no difference there.
Maybe on the Fram, It wouldn't make a difference, but the filter media did tear on this Napa Proseclt oil filter.

The backing, either metal like here, or plastic on some other brands top tier filters, might actually increase flow. It separates the media folds slightly.
The metal screen backing would matter when the filter media starts to load up with particulate and the pressure drop increases though it. The media would more easily collapse and fold over on itself as it moves inward toward the metal core, probably eventually tearing the media where it is glued to the end plates. The bypass spring is probably sized to open before that happened, but either way,unfiltered oil is getting through to the bearing surfaces.
@@darrylsjodin7184 you're not going to have a collapse of the filter element when there's a metal core (which it does have). Also, removing that metal mesh allowed Fram to increase the surface area of filter media, which in turn increases its filtration capacity. But either way, if you let your oil filter go unchanged for so long that it literally clogs up like that...you deserve whatever happens.
@@darrylsjodin7184 True perhaps. BUT as you are buying the top of the line filter, you are likely to change oil when it's due not ignore the life blood of your engine. THose that ignore maintenance aren't likely to buy the XG filter. I would have preferred they went to a plastic mesh as some others have done.

You seem to be obsessed with the damned "metal screen", which has NO EFFECT on the filter's ability to trap and hold particles in the media.
You complain that the new filter is "not as good" -- without mentioning that the new Ultra XG has a full 50% MORE filtering area and thus a greater particle holding capacity. The increased filtering area of the new Ultra XG allows a lower internal pressure, and a MUCH less chance of tripping the by-pass valve and losing ALL of the filtering capacity.
Regardless of your opinion, the newer model of Ultra XG is better at filtering oil, which is what an oil filter does -- and it doesn't NEED a damned "metal screen" to do it's job.
Also, entirely too much emphasis is placed on the importance of the "coil spring" that's found in SOME oil filters -- It's NOT any better than the stamped spring -- the coil spring is used to compensate for the SHORTER filter than is used in the stamped spring type of filter. The stamped spring is not used because it's cheaper, since the most expensive spin-on oil filter that's available (AMSOIL) uses the stamped metal spring.
The famous 95 MERC runs Pennzoil Ultra Platinum, 5-W-20; Bosch Premium Oil Filter # 3410; FILTERMAG # SS365PR -- oil and filter changed at 5,000 miles.

The BOSCH oil filter recommends Castrol Full Synthetic oil, but they don't say that it MUST be used.
I don't use or recommend ANY oil filter that claims a life of over 10,000 miles -- because I change my oil and filter at 5,000-mile intervals -- and I run the FILTERMAG # SS365PR Magnet Kit to remove ferrous particles SMALLER than 20 microns.
Best one on the market is the FRAM racing filter but either one of those will do the job because Fram is very underrated by these flashy brand fanboys 💪😂
