I think your doing great work. I would be interested in how repeatable the results are of some of these tests. The wear scar test had a lot of results really close. I wonder if you ran it twice, if you'd have the same results. Also, I think we'd get a better idea of how much better one is than the other if you used a percentage system to award points rather than going from 1 to 6.. For the oil flow, Mopar was 41.5 and toyota was 41 so toyota got 6 and mopar got 5. But then the acdelco was out in left field at 53.6. If you did 6 points for the same flow time as warm 0w20 oil and 0 points for a speed that would probably cause engine damage (40wt oil at engine temp) you could better see how much difference is between them. Just a thought. Keep up the great work! Love the high speed you talk at. Saves everyone lots of time.

I can imagine the temps in states that border Canada are even worse (obviously Alaska being the most extreme). I bet New York sees negative teens sometimes as well. So, basically anyone that doesn't live in the southern states rely on cold flow tests like this. A mere ten degrees is not adequately cold enough.

I worked in an OEM oil manufacturing factory as a chemist. Something to keep in mind, most automotive companies build oils that work best for their engines based on dyno testing. They will put an engine through multiple high rpm cycles for weeks and determine the wear metals in the oil throughout the test cycles. Also, oil additives are added in excess. Even with the oils with lower concentrations of additives they are in concentrations well above necessary. Your oil viscosity tests are not accurate at all and they should be done at normal operating temperature. All of those oils have a 0 winter rating and did you see how different they were at cold start temp? The same thing happens at operating temperature. We would measure oil viscosity in capillary tubes that had a known diameter and were submerged in an oil bath at 80c. Also, for price we could never beat amsoil or royal purple for full syn oils.
Pleanty of people drive their cars for miles before the engine is up to running temp. With my short commute I drive with the oil colder than operating more than above, and even more so in the winter.
@@soaringparakeet in the name of standardized testing, so that you stay apples-to-apples, no one can get value from checking parameters after a vehicle has been driven at such slight increments such as 1/10mi, 1/8mi, 1/5mi. On that note, since I did purchase a vehicle driven like yours, my mechanic was shocked how much instrument air pressure was needed to blow out the oil returns...so if you think your "light" use is not harmful, you will surprised to hear it might be the worst thing you can do for an engine. You absolutely should never go beyond 6mos without an oil change and you should absolutely fear a rising oil level or gassy smell as you could have gas washing your cylinder walls and diluting your engine oil (happened with my '18 Camry mid-winter this year). Make sure you get that engine up to full temp at least once a week.
You must have retired some time ago because there are several oils better than Royal Purple, like Pennzoil Ultra Platinum and Quaker State and Castrol synthetic oils. Redline is better than Royal Purple too.
@@richcombs4805you're being over cautious. My parents drove very little. They changed their oil once a year at inspection time. They died years ago. Their cars are still on the road and neither burns oil. Changing synthetic oil with less than a few thousand miles is just wasting good oil.
Messiness, and how easily the surface smooths after being disturbed (when wet). And when dry...strength. I'd suggest sun damage too, but I don't want to wait a year for results.

Absolutely LOVE your videos! Completely honest and unbiased reviews. If I could make one suggestion, I think some conditional formatting on the tables would help the viewers grasp the information being displayed a lot! Like for the amount of detergents in each oil, color coding a deeper blue or green for greater values would really make the data pop and you could easily see what product has more of what. Otherwise, I wouldn’t change a thing about what you’re doing! Keep up the good work!

@@franklinvanproosdij From what I can tell the European motor oils aren't as easy to get a hold of here in the states unless you find an auto parts store that specializes in European vehicles. But that's what Amazon is for right? :)
I would add Ford Motorcraft 15w40 Super Duty oil to this list as well - I've heard claims of higher ZDDP levels in this oil compared to Rotella/Delo/Valvoline diesel oils, but the oil analysis samples I sent out showed pretty similar results - not sure if it was just the batch of oil I got.

Yes me too - what happens in an engine? Are there little bubbles of steam that circulate since it can't escape? Is it better then to pre-cook the oil before putting it in an engine?
The amount of time Todd puts into his videos is unparalleled, I've been using Pennzoil in my Chevy's thanks to his tests, but it looks like I could be running OEM. Awesome job as always 💯
Your test confirmed what I have known for years. I have driven Fords since I was in Highschool and ran nothing but Motorcraft oil and filters. All have gone 250,000 to 350,000 miles before trading or getting totaled by teenagers and never had an internal engine issue.
Working in a Cord dealer shop it’s amazing how many I’ve seen with north of 250k with few repairs in their history, from customers that bought the car there and every single time it’s needed anything it’s been through our shop. Being from a Ford family with very few engine repairs in 30+ years made it the best career choice for me.
I have heard that from many people. But in truth, I have heard the same regarding ACDelco, and Honda. I have NOT heard the same about Toyota. I have a 2015 F150 with only 66k miles, and I am gearing up to do all the fluids. And its Motorcraft only.
Glad Project Farm enjoyed participating in Matt's Off Road Games. As a jeep owner I am pleasantly surprised the Mopar oil did as well as it did. I'll have to go through your library of videos to see if you already did similar test on Valvoline oil. If one of your viewers already know this was done, please reply with the link. Thanks for sharing.
I started using because I noticed less noise from my engine when tried it. I’ve tried a lot of different oils. Also ford performance recommending doesn’t hurt. I still think the best was rosella gas and truck. Of course they discontinued it.
Ford/Motocraft has a special oil that they only use for their performance vehicles (Ford GT, GT350, GT500, Raptor, Boss 302, Focus RS). It's all 5W-50 Motocraft. It's hard to find that in other brands, so most of those owners just use Motocraft. It seems to work well...
@@ittimjonesyeah my gt500 calls for it as well. Not really another option, but I have trusted ford vehicles since I was 17 so it has been working out so far. Blue oval wins oil!

Was great meeting you at the Off Road Games. I talked to you at your booth about Kinetic energy ropes. I was also a driver in the games, I was driving the Banana on day one! Driving a very capable rig up that trail was amazing. I would love to do that again.
Another phenomenal video! Quite surprised at Toyota. Also what an awesome event! Cool that you participated. As always cheers from your biggest fan in Colombia amigo!
Toyota motor oil is just rebranded mobile 1. Its says exxonmobile right on the back. Read it. Just buy the cheaper mobile 1 with the proper additive pack, the oem stuff is over priced but the same thing!
@@ColombianLNP A lot of stuff is like this, Oem oil filters, brake pads. You buy "HONDA" pads for example the dealer.. they charged you double for the same exact stuff you can get from "Akebono".. whoever it is making them right now... for cheaper. Often you can google who is making whatever OEM part and find it tons cheaper through the manufacturer of the part.
Love these motor oil shoot outs! When testing Mobil 1 it would be great to see the Extended Performance version used. Even better would be a Mobil 1 shootout to see if there is a difference in the offerings like you’ve done for Penzoil.
Great review as always. I'd recommend giving the percentage of oil lost instead of the absolute number since they're all starting with different amounts slightly.
I used to be a mechanic for an independent shop and we used Valvoline motor oil exclusively and because of seeing how clean engines were on the inside that had very good oil maintenance performed and high mileage, I use Valvoline now in my own vehicles. I have always looked at automotive manufacturers brand oils as inferior but now I would love to see a comparison between top namebrand oils at the automotive parts stores with the automotive manufacturing brands from today’s testing. That might be very informative to me.
I’ve pretty much exclusively used Mobil 1 oil because it’s usually affordable at Walmart. As a Honda fan I was extremely impressed with their oil. Great test! But I’ll probably keep using Mobil 1

@cicada9471 You can tell by the bottles that the motorcraft, AC Delco and Honda oil are all PhillipsConoco oils but this testing just goes to show that the manufacturer of an oil means less than the quality of the base stocks and additive packages used.

@@soaringparakeet"Severe driving conditions" include short commutes. Take the vehicle on a highway for half an hour once a week.

Does silicone work as motor oil? Let's find out!

i love how you talked so much about the event you attended at the end. not typical for your video style, but it was actually really nice to hear how much you enjoyed it all, and i wouldnt be upset with more like that
Thanks for the feedback!
@@ProjectFarm Agree with above post! Would love to see separate video of Utah/games from your perspective!
I'm a long time viewer of both PF and MORR and it was absolutely a blast to see the videos of you tackling the obstacles at the Offroad Games. You did great!
Thanks!
In Utah ?
Yeah...Morris was advertising for the Games..I had to recommend the most impartial you tuber I knew...
I have never seen this video until today, it is really cool. That seemed like a great experience man, please keep the videos coming.
Thanks, will do!
The oil testing has always been my favorite. Everything you do is great. Thank you for giving us the ability to make informed decisions about our purchases in a world full of junk products. It is very helpful.

Todd, You Did great at the Offroad Games. Should have taking the Farmabego and Cousin Eddie. God Bless
Thank you!! I had a lot of fun at the games and enjoyed meeting everyone!
Great job. Now you need to build a rock crawler for next year!
Thanks, will do! Thanks for the constructive feedback. Thanks for supporting the channel! I really appreciate it!
I've been offline for the last month. It's great to come back here and see the oil races running at full speed.

I’d love to see how rotella 5w40 does! Thought about switching all my vehicles to it!
Would be interesting to see power driven diesels oil in here as well
I'd be kind of interested in that as well. I run Rotella T6 in my motorcycles (it's got all the proper ratings to do so) so it'd be good to see how it does.

I would love to see a test of various 15W-40 motor oils designed for diesel engines such as Rotella, Chevron, and Mobil Delvac as well as some store brands suchbas Love's and Flying J.
Once again, thanks for the great video and can't wait till next Sunday for your next one.
And maybe some European brands? Like total and ravenol? Or are they realy hard to buy in the status?

@@franklinvanproosdij From what I can tell the European motor oils aren't as easy to get a hold of here in the states unless you find an auto parts store that specializes in European vehicles. But that's what Amazon is for right? :)
Maybe Liqui Moly also?
I would add Ford Motorcraft 15w40 Super Duty oil to this list as well - I've heard claims of higher ZDDP levels in this oil compared to Rotella/Delo/Valvoline diesel oils, but the oil analysis samples I sent out showed pretty similar results - not sure if it was just the batch of oil I got.

Thanks for the feedback.
Great wholesome video. Nice community has been created with your work. Congratulations and the cousin Eddie character always makes me laugh😂

Motorcraft is some darn nice oil, and was cool to see it do so well here.
Thanks for sharing!
Not many places carry it. Even the ford quick change place didn't even have it. Ford performance dealers carry it though.
Awesome. Thanks for including the video about the games. It was fun to watch. I hope you do go next year and share with us again.
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed!

Toyota motor oil is just rebranded mobile 1. Its says exxonmobile right on the back. Read it. Just buy the cheaper mobile 1 with the proper additive pack, the oem stuff is over priced but the same thing!
@@crisnmaryfam7344 good tip
Thanks!
This is by far the best Chanel on RUclips and it’s not even close

Thanks so much!
Thanks for the suggestion.
@@ProjectFarm In a way you have already done it by comparing all those to Mobil 1.
I’ve pretty much exclusively used Mobil 1 oil because it’s usually affordable at Walmart. As a Honda fan I was extremely impressed with their oil. Great test! But I’ll probably keep using Mobil 1

Motorcraft has always been underrated. Even the synthetic blend is good. Very nice and interesting video as always!
I might go back to it on my expedition, last time I changed it I went to Liqui molly
It's ConocoPhillips motor oil. It may be cheaper to buy that.
Thanks!
@cicada9471 You can tell by the bottles that the motorcraft, AC Delco and Honda oil are all PhillipsConoco oils but this testing just goes to show that the manufacturer of an oil means less than the quality of the base stocks and additive packages used.
Underrated? It was the most expensive and didn't even hold up the best.
