I've been a die hard Valvoline guy but, I've recently switched to super tech and man it seems like that oil holds up better. The Valvoline I feel like would evaporate so quickly. I would top up more often. Good to know their is only a slight variation from different brands.
I for one certainly appreciate this man's efforts. He has a thirst for knowledge like we do but also has an excellent way of presenting it and awesome oratory skill. Thanks from Oakland CA.
Gosh the amount of time project farm puts into his meticulous testing is undeniably amazing and thorough, won't be shocked to see his channel be up to 6 million subscribers the next couple years how can you not wach this valuable content and have such an awesome education by doing so.
Even though I don't have access to a Costco and suspected it was the same as Supertech and Amazon Basics, I still couldn't wait to watch the video. Simply because it's Project Farm and it's a new video.
@@sciencebeartimberwoods7610 Yes they can and I would be surprised if they aren't, they are all made by the same company (Warren) and there would be no reason for them to spend the money developing a different formula for each store.
Wow! Fantastic video with more info than I've seen in purebred. I just paid $43.99 for a gallon of Mobil one at Costco. Their Kirkland beans is $30. After seeing all the testing done on this video, I'm returning the Mobil one tomorrow and grabbing the Kirkland. Thank you for the thorough study!
I'm an avid motorcycle rider, and in our community synthetic oil can be $20 per quart. So many riders use Shell Rotella T6 from Walmart for $22 per 4 quarts because it's JASO MA rated (safe for motorcycle clutches). For the past several years, there have been so many forum wars about why you should or shouldn't use this oil vs the designer oils that cost 4x as much. There are now NO serious reviews that put this argument to bed once and for all. Would be awesome to see it. I'm sure all the motorcycle forums across the country would refer to the review.
I have a 1982 Mercedes 240D with close to 400,000 miles on it. Sometimes, when it is burning excessive engine oil, and is smoking like a coal fired freight train, I add a quart of 90-140 Gear Oil to the crankcase. It runs smoother, quieter, and smokes a lot less. I have another engine waiting to go into her, when I get some time to spend in the shop. Until then, I just do what works to buy a few more tbousand miles or so. I have to chuckle at the sphincter-breaths that swear by expensive designer oils, additives, and their polly-parrot reciting of the advertisement data. Usually, during the lifetime of their vehicle, they spend enough on all of that fairytale crap, that they could have purchased a new vehicle.
@@marshalllhiepler I completely agree with you but the 240D is probably contributing more to global warming than a couple of coal fired electric plants in China..... Not that I wouldn't get a slight amount of enjoyment of seeing a Prius being enveloped in cloud of soot at a stoplight. :)
Kirkland heavy-duty motor oil is made and blended by Warren distribution, the same company that manufactures Walmart's Super Tech brand. Warren distribution also has its brand of motor oil known as Mag 1 oil. In addition, Warren distribution blends motor oils for Meijer and AmazonBasic oils.
@@wizard-of-other-oz they could be! Either way in this case, if memory serves, the Kirkland and SuperTech oils are borderline identical. Lots of much smarter people who have a greater interest and understanding of this issue did the research, I think there’s like a nearly 200 page thread on BITOG about it.
Good to know, thank you! Confirms what my dad told me: "As long as it's SAE/dexos approved, most companies rely on marketing to fool you into thinking their oil is "better". THE biggest way to make your engine last is to change your oil at its scheduled mileage/time interval."
Or even earlier. IMO these recommended 7,500to 10,000 miles is way way too long. I do my oil changes at 3,000 to 3,500 on lightly used gas engines and 3,500 to 4,500 on lightly used diesels. Depending on the extremes I will shorten the maintenance times even more because in the long run oil and filters are cheap.
@@2003evodave Same, I change mine every 5000 miles, regardless if it's only lightly used. I consider it cheap insurance, need my Tacoma to last 300k miles!
@@2003evodave that's a waste of money and old school thinking. Believe it or not, oil is a technology. All oil types have vastly improved over the years, including Dino oil. This improvement along with other improvements allow us to go longer on an oil change interval. These other improvements I speak of are plenty. There's been improvement in oil filters, fuel quality (The government mandated a minimum amount of fuel additives all fuel must have), and cars themselves (computers monitor everything in a vehicle these days and metallurgy has definitely improved). With your thought process, I'm guessing you are an older gentleman. Nothing wrong with that. I just know when something has been set in your mind for so long, it is hard to change. The easiest and most factual way to change this thinking is an oil analysis. Blackstone Labs is such a company that does oil analysis. Lots of DIYers use Blackstone Labs every now and then to get a hold on how their engine is doing. Send off your oil after 3500 miles to Blackstone and they will tell you whether or not you can go longer on an oil change. I can almost guarantee you they will tell you the engine can go longer on an oil change.
I work for Warren distribution in council bluffs Iowa. We bottle Amazon basics, Kirkland signature and SuperTech as well as our house brand mag1 on the same lines. They may have very small differences, but they're practically the same oil.

2 years ago based on your testing I went to Kirkland 0-20 and 5-20 oils in my high mileage 2010 Sequoia and not so high miles 2013 Tundra. I am totally sold on the Kirkland oils. I have switched to Kirkland for all of my vehicles. Your testing was the tipping point for me and I want to thank you for such a good process.
I was at Costco’s. Saw this oil. I said maybe this is too low of a price. I looked in the box, I lifted it up, checked the certificates, checked the prices again. I said I better do some research first. Thank you for the video.
@@richardmorse5307 That because of Costco oil at 17.00 bucks sent Mobil having to discount a lot more, I used to buy at Walmart USA 27.00 because crappy tire never put it on sale 56.00 now it every other week.. Thank you, Costco. I would by 0w40 they do not carry. Walmart Canada is a joke
As someone who has watched since the first episodes, I love seeing how you've updated your equipment and processes to get more scientific and accurate results. Great job man.
I’ve started working as a petroleum lab tech, mostly in production analytics, but these videos have quickly become my favorite to listen to while working. There’s still so much to learn!
Not surprised with these results. I've been a member of Costco since way back in the early Price Club days and cannot think of one Kirkland brand product I've bought that I was not satisfied with. There one of the very few companies that seem to care about there customers and really try hard to take care of them. As always another great video.
I like them as well but I also feel the Sams Club products are very good. I think some people are too into the Costco cult however and have found Sams to be a better value on some things. That said I'll be buying the Kirkland oil in the future.
I have a video idea. I'm always getting grease, gas, oil on my clothes. How about testing different brands of detergent. Help find the best value for removing the stains.
Man i drove from east tx to denver and back this past january, go to change my wifes oil last week and the gush of dirty oil hit the very end of my cheap pan, bounced out, and coated my national western stock show tshirt. Sad day...
I liked the Kirkland oil video. I am a bearing Lubrication engineer at GM and help design the crankshafts and bearings for several of our engines including the smallblock engine over the last 20 years. I am not really surprised by your results. Probably the most important part of the label on the oil container is the Dexos certification. That is a GM proprietary certification and oil manufacturers have to submit their samples directly to GM for their approval. If an oil has the Dexos certification I would have no problem putting the oil in my GM car.
Warren makes excellent lubricants and have done so for many decades. Super Tech and Mag 1 are two of the most reliable and highest performing oil brands of Warren oils and you can't beat the prices. Warren probably puts the exact same oil in both ST and Kirkland bottles, the only difference being the labels. This is common practice in the lubricant industry and helps to keep cost (price) low due to economies of scale. Fantastic review -- keep up the great work!!
Glad I came across this! Was in Costco the other day and saw it and thought there's no way it's good for that price. Subie owners rejoice! Cheaper synthetic oil that works well!
It's not good oil for that price, believe me, I open few valve covers from customers that use this crap and believe me, I even asked when was the last time they changed their oil, they said they regularly oil changes at 3k miles, I was are u sure. Engine so dirty as it has never seen an oil change in its lifetime, they proudly showed me the full synthetic Kirkland oil, 😔, I told them to stop using that crao ,because its recycled oil, wich will burn out fast, as is recycled and I showed them the parts inside the engine, blacken then I showed and old vehicle with good brand oil changes since the person purchased it and it look brand new inside compare to theirs wich theirs was like 11 years newer, stay away from cheap oil and those cheap oil chains, unless u ask for the good oil then the prices change, alot, good luck
Every Kirkland item that I have purchased has been excellent (food to products). Bonus: I bought this on sale for $21.00. Can't wait to try these out on my cars.
I just bought some Supertech High Mileage Full Synthetic for only $15 but felt a bit guilty. After watching this, I am excited for my next oil change and feel I got a great deal. As always, appreciate your diligence with the comprehensive testing and tireless efforts making these videos!
@@ProjectFarm 7:55 do you realize that you have just blown the minds of many car drivers here in Europe? Our car manufacturers claim the engine oil should be changed every 30.000 km (18.600 miles) - because of ecology? And many of these poor drivers do actually follow this "advice". The engines are clogged up very soon and a new car is needed because it is not worth to repair the poorly maintained engine with very often no more than 100.000km (60.000miles). I believe this the reason why we are suggested to use long life engine oils - sales of the new cars will be this way kept constant :) because their engines will not last long anyway :)
I've been using Kirkland OW-20 for several years for my vehicles. I got a local mechanic, who charges $30 when I take oil and filter. Effectively, I will save over $60 per car per oil change with this process :-) So far, I didnt have any issue.

A video idea is to test what is the best “Windshield Water Repellent” treatment. Here are some brands that are on the market. Rain-X, Aquapel, TriNova, Nano Safeguard, Invisible Glass.

Your videos are so informative. I always look for values, but am cautious as inferior products are never a value. The experiments you do allow people to save money and use these products with confidence.
After 20+ years of shopping at Costco, I can trust almost anything labeled Kirkland to be at least equal to the top item in that category in quality with much better value. If Costco sells it I don’t look anywhere else for that Item.
The Kirkland mens razors (handle with disposable heads) were not great. They’ve since been discontinued. That’s the only disappointment I can remember.
Not true. Costco strong arms suppliers to drop their price so often while a product may look the same at Costco as another retailer they're usually made with cheaper components as suppliers can't sell products to Costco for less than it costs them to make. Costco is pretty abusive to their suppliers.
@@codyweiler6083 they are “abusive to their suppliers”, and Kirkland signature is not high quality are two separate claims. Do you have any specific examples of Kirkland products that look the same, but are actually inferior?

Use the Kirkland 5W30 SYN in my Acadia, Canyon, and 200k mile Suburban for years. Never had any issues at all and much cheaper than big brands. you can definetly go upwards of 10k miles (non turbo) for synthetic oil, though I wanted to see if this would hold up against the big names. 3k oil changes is old school and time consuming! Save your dime and time :)
@@qtopthisqif u want ur car to last 200 to 300k miles change every 3 to 5 k miles, just because it says it can last that long doesn’t mean if u plan on owning ur car for 20 years u should, there is metal shavings and wear and tear, if u have prestine oil in your car it’s entire life it’s gonna make a difference, if u sell your car at 100k or 125k then you will never see the difference
@@MikeJones-gj4me No need to (typical daily vehicle), personally I'd run quality oil and get analyzed throughout and project the wear and tear that would occur (track/daily). The thing is a lot of this info is already online. Cars get over 200k without rigorous oil changes as well, though obviously one of if not the most important factors to engine life.
An excellent set of tests if I may say so. Great video. I commented before, on a previous engine oil related video, that there are standard tests which provide insight to the characteristics of oil performance. This suite of cold temperature flow, heat resistance, lubricity, and wear resistance are part of the industry test regime, and the lab tests you asked for are best-in-class when it comes to assessing the performance of lubricants. Dexos 2 approvals should provide consistency of formulation if both products claim they are compliant, and your tests certainly confirmed that both of these products were comparable. One issue of concern when buying engine oil is whether you can truly rely on the label; has the vendor really achieved the claimed approvals? If you buy from a reputable supplier this will not be in doubt but some disreputable businesses will use the Dexos 2 logo despite not having it i.e. not using the correct formulation, and sometimes make outrageous claims such as an engine oil being suitable for gasoline and diesel engines, motorcycles, and heavy machinery. Such products do not exist. Best to buy from a well-known or trusted supplier. Your tests conclusively proved that the Kirkland 5w-30 product is within specification and therefore represents great value for money. Thanks for doing such a great job.
Wonderful breakdown video of the two synthetic brands. I was a helicopter mechanic in the Navy for 20+ years and we only used Synthetic in our aircraft and equipment. I picked up this practice in my own vehicles when I started seeing the benefits to our H60s gear boxes and engines wearing. As you can imagine our aircraft didnt get used gently! We pu them theough the wringer! Baswd on my knoledge and experiences I will not run anything but Synthetic in my vehicle now and recommend it to anyone! Zack Olbon USN Ret.
If I remember correctly Warren also makes the Supertech oil, so they're likely the same oil. Warren makes oil for a LOT of different brands, though that doesn't mean all the brands are made to the same specifications.

You're over 1M subs!! Congrats and well deserved. I literally buy my motor oil, pennzoil, based off of your testing results! Thank you for being and remaining independent and unsponsored.
Excellent analysis. I just bought a 2 x 5 qt package from Costco this past weekend, since I had heard people say good things about it. I had previously been using conventional oil, but switched to the Castrol Edge Advanced Full Synthetic High Mileage for my 2005 Cavalier last March. It's exactly about a year now and time for a change. I did just over 3K miles. It held up pretty well but I've noticed the oil level start to drop rapidly over the past few weeks. I typically only check the level once in about 3 months, until it gets close to the interval change. I will say that the Full Synthetic definitely made the engine a lot smoother and quieter, especially at the late stage. But the Castrol ( which supposedly is rated higher than the Mobil 1) was @ $28 + for 5 qts, and the Kirkland is $38.99 for 10 qts. That's about a @ $10 savings per 5 qts. If it's almost the same in performance, then why not? Will update later down the road, maybe after 1K miles/ 3 months.
@@ProjectFarm I also found out looking at the package that it’s a Dexos 1 Gen 3. So it must be an upgrade on the Gen 2. Anyway so far it’s doing really well, very smooth. This was my first time watching your videos and definitely looking for more of them. 👍🏼
Your testing procedures are amazing. The extent to which you go is above and beyond anything I've ever seen and I completely trust your selections based on the tests I witness on your pages. Consumer reports is dead to me compared to what is actually specified here. Thank you for the time and effort. I've been a Costco member for awhile and have found them trustworthy. Generally their stuff is quality and there's been no complaints except when they discontinued something I like. I've found their store brands to be better than the name brands which is refreshing. Still, nice to get the reviews and testing to keep them on their toes. Thanks.
I remember reading that Costco requires their Kirkland brand to be something like 5% BETTER than whatever the name brand thing is. Not sure how that metric is calculated on certain items, but after doing a lot of testing, I find it to be true in my opinion. Also, their store brand items are frequently actually made by the top of the line competitor (but not always). For kirkland batteries, for example, Duracell makes Kirkland branded batteries. I would buy ANYTHING with Kirkland's brand stamped on it and feel comfortable that it was a good purchase. Cannot recommend Costco highly enough.
Put a good Fort Knox 90 min 1780° against your normal tractor supply big box safe. In a real house fire. Pretty sure how that turns out, but would like to see it proved by a independent use fair tester.

It's rather true... Kirkland doesn't really sell junk. Some stuff is questionable like the quest bars they just released for the 3rd time but most stuff is amazing.
I've been a Costco shopper since 2003 and had no idea they carried this! I, too, am changing my oil every 8 weeks or so (~500+ miles a week commute), and this could save a ton of money over time. Thanks for this; looks like my 232k miles Mustang GT will be thanking you as well. 👍
Thanks for the hard work comparing and analyzing the oils. Gives me peace of mind knowing the Kirkland oil is as good as any of the other expensive brands.
Good job again. I have been using Costco 5W-30 for 3 years in my 99 Jeep 4.0 now at 335,000 mostly to disprove the whole ZDDP myth. Cam still fine. My only general suggestion is to leave your drain plug out while removing the old filter as more dirty oil will drain to the pan once filter is removed and more will come out.
This is the first time I've ever seen the cooked beat the new in the cold flow test. I wonder how that's even possible. It's interesting to see these analyses of oils. The fact that the Kirkland had a smaller wear scar than the Super Tech was exactly what I expected; my ears don't lie-it sounded smoother than the super tech, because less metal was being removed. Note to self; Warren makes good oil. I've used it before under its own name and others' names, and never really tested anything particularly. I run synthetics basically exclusively in any engine I like and plan to keep, which is basically all of them. They're just better protection. Any oil is cheap compared to an engine.
I've long been a fan of synthetic oil as well, but the one thing I've always been led to believe is that it's iffy to put synthetic oil in an older engine that's always run conventional oil previously. The idea being that the synthetic stuff is more likely to start leaking around borderline worn seals, since it's "slippier". Not sure how true that is, it may well be just another "folk legend" that has no truth at all.
Synthetic oil does not mean it’s not real oil. It’s a marketing term. Synthetic oil is more like a “selected property” oil, with the hydrocarbons chains being much more uniform in length. Normal refined oil, that’s processed from Crude in a refinery stack, has more varied hydrocarbon chain lengths. The end result is the more normal oil, with its mix of short, medium, and longer chains, tends to be held better in worn seals and loose tolerances. Of course the smaller chains will pass by rings and seals. The “Synthetic “ branded stuff is much more consistent in chain length, so if rings and seals will let some thru, they will actually let most of the oil thru. It’s not that anything is bad, it’s just physics, but to the consumer it looks like it’s leaking or being burned away in combustion. The “high mileage” branded oils is really the same oil, but most of the oil is of the long chain variety, so less of it leaks by.
@@PhillipRhodes It's absolutely true. I tested in my 1988 Chevy 305. Leaked pretty quickly after switching to synthetic. I went back to convention and put in a new oil pan and gasket and it's sealed up now.
As a railroad employee I have spent many hours placing loaded tank cars of lube oil into facilities that process oil from tank cars into packaging. One tank car I tracked from a refinery in Texas was turned into no less than seven different brand containers! Refineries make the oil to meet a given standard and sell under bulk contract to packaging facilities. I was stunned to watch pallets of various brands of oil bottled, placed in boxes, then onto pallets and loaded into trucks to various retail outlets. Same with some tools. We spot the raw materials and they are turned into molten ingots which are then forged into wrenches with different brand names. Did you think Craftsman had their own steel mill? The massive power hammers the slam the hot steel into wrenches are an awesome sight. And that's just the beginning. Don't even ask me about beer...
For my work, i get to visit many different plants quite often. The practice you described is extremely common. Your refrigerant gas for cars? Yeah, those cans are all filled at the same factory from the same gas tank, they just tag on a different brand or can shape for each batch. Same thing with a lot of food products (especially trail mixes, and most packaged foods). Even boxes -- the logo on cardboard boxes (not the product logo, but the company that sells the box) doesn't even match the factory it comes out of. It could have been produced by Company A, but the logo says Company B. There's a lot fewer differences between brands than people realize.
Same goes for most gasoline. It's sent to refineries then once turned into gas it goes off to different gas companies who just throw some additives in and send it to stations.

I’m not a sports fan but somehow watching those oils race down the chutes is riveting. I trust Kirkland products. Good to hear an objective evaluation since Kirkland is currently in both cars. thank’s bro!
I saw this trick the other day to help catch the oil from an oil filter positioned like that one in the video on the Suburban. The guy grabbed the filter using a red solo cup and spun the filter off using the cup. It catches all the oil when the filter disconnects from the vehicle, holds the filter in the cup, and doesn't make a mess. Smart!
I love how many oils you have tested that come from Warren Distribution. Have you considered testing MAG1? It seems to be their higher performance oil, at least from what I have seen. I'm curious how it stacks up against oils like M1, Amsoil, Pennzoil UP, etc. Thanks for all your videos!
I'm glad to see this, as I just bought Kirkland synthetic oil for three of our vehicles in 0W-20 and 5W-20 viscosity. It does take a couple years to get anywhere close to 4000 miles on each vehicle but feel confident that waiting that long will not be detrimental to the engines. Side note: I've used Mobil one for many years.
Synthetic oil does not break down from oxidation like mineral oil does. In the new air tight engines that keep out contamination there is no need to change synthetic oil every 6 months....only operating hrs and or miles matter.
Thanks to everyone who recommended comparing these 2 brands.

Man you know your oil!... So when deep frying, what cooking oil should I use?.. for real real ty for the heads up!
Good to know, thank you! Confirms what my dad told me: "As long as it's SAE/dexos approved, most companies rely on marketing to fool you into thinking their oil is "better". THE biggest way to make your engine last is to change your oil at its scheduled mileage/time interval."
You are welcome! Thanks for the feedback.

Great information. Thank you!!

@@MikeJones-gj4me No need to (typical daily vehicle), personally I'd run quality oil and get analyzed throughout and project the wear and tear that would occur (track/daily).

I wonder how you recuperate your investment based on all the machinery you purchase, lab tests, and time of taping, testing, speaking, editing and posting your finds. Uncanny!
Thanks so much!
This guy smokes consumer testing standards. Even does extra stuff to further proof concepts.
You wonder how he recuperates his investments? Are you really that naive? He doesn't make these videos for fun. It's probably his primary source of income due to his channel being monetized. Good grief, some people don't have a clue.
I've been a Costco member for awhile and have found them trustworthy. Generally their stuff is quality and there's been no complaints except when they discontinued something I like. I've found their store brands to be better than the name brands which is refreshing. Still, nice to get the reviews and testing to keep them on their toes. Thanks.
You are welcome!
They treat their employees very well too, they pay their workers waaaay more than other Grocers
Test if the fire rating on a safe will actually save documents and or guns on the inside of the safe!
Thanks for the video idea.
We need this
Put a good Fort Knox 90 min 1780° against your normal tractor supply big box safe. In a real house fire. Pretty sure how that turns out, but would like to see it proved by a independent use fair tester.
Use a basic liberty safe. You can usually find them at Cabela's for a good price and at well stocked gun and safe shops. Meaning alot of people probably have these. Thank you!
The California,, Carr fire, , , , , the
things in the burnt safes( most of them), turned to dust! I don't know the ratings of any of those safes.
just sayin
Like many other comments beforehand, this is the type of information that is actually useful. Great video.
Thanks!

I really appreciate the Time and Attention you put into the details and sending each sample out to be Lab tested.

I’ve been running Kirkland for a little while now. It’s good to know it’s still a quality oil.
Thanks for the feedback.
I'd be proud to have a Project Farm sticker on my old volvo 240 wagon. I trust everything he says!

Thanks for the video! I have been using SuperTech full synthetic in all 5 of my Toyotas for about 4 years now. Thanks to your expert research, I continue to trust it.
You are welcome! Thanks for the feedback.
As my dad used to say, "If it wasn't good Kirkland wouldn't put his signature on it."
Thanks for the feedback.
It's rather true... Kirkland doesn't really sell junk. Some stuff is questionable like the quest bars they just released for the 3rd time but most stuff is amazing.
Yeah Kirkland is just your average well known brand, they don't sell junk but they don't make top of the line products.
@@yellowspike3344 I hate their milk jugs , designed to drip an spill every pour, lol

Glad it was helpful!

Thanks for the feedback.
Thanks for the feedback.
M.M.O for 2 stroke oil
Thanks for sharing.
What about beer? Lol
You mean Duff, Duff Lite, Duff Dark, and Tartar Control Duff come from the same pipe?!?!?!
I love your channel. You spend an incredible amount of time setting up tests and doing proper quantitative testing not just "seat of the pants" stuff. Keep up the great work!

Smart!
Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for sharing.
Best to change your oil every 4,000 - 5,000 miles or 6 months, whichever comes first. Never, go more than 1 year regardless of miles.
Synthetic oil does not break down from oxidation like mineral oil does. In the new air tight engines that keep out contamination there is no need to change synthetic oil every 6 months....only operating hrs and or miles matter.
