Freaking awesome still.
We had tickets for this summer but it got canceled. This was great.
Old doesn’t necessarily mean tired and worn out!
Sir you gave me chills
I am here in 2024… the man is truly an amazing treasure! Wow
I remember seeing this, sitting at home watching RUclips all week when we were shut down at work and the lyrics were fitting. It's probably my favorite Styx song.
This gentleman is 73 years young and singing this song in its original key, what a gift. Thanks Dennis!
I know right? I wish Geddy Lee was able to keep his voice a little longer!
@@saturn722 Yeah, but Geddy was pushing it even when he was younger with regard to range and volume.
@@TucsonDude He had to change with the times starting with Moving Pictures and began to sing in a comfortable range for his voice. That's when we got their really good stuff and it probably saved his voice for the next generation of albums.
Imagine living next door to Dennis DeYoung and being able to hear piano through the window. Wow
Mr .DeYoung if you read this message We fans and America love you.. Thank You for all the treasures that got us all through life. .styx will never be styx without you and without you there is no styx we all know that !! God Bless You and God Bless America
@@shooting4star2023 Desert Moon is a great song. 40 years old, this Fall! I was in the 6th grade! 😂
Only the best vocalists can sing naked like this, meaning no effects, autotune. He just sang to us. Loved it.
Exactly. Think Bieber could pull this off?
@@BrianKushner LOL! I couldn't care less.
You got that right!!! 99% of today's singers can't do this! Seen him 3 yrs ago at a smaller venue...still amazing after all these years! Thank you for posting this.
Totally! There’s some age to his voice, of course, but it sounds amazing for his age. And I’m pretty sure it’s I the original key....anyone?
I get the chills whenever I hear Styx. Takes me back to the 5th grade, growing up in the Chicago ‘burbs. That’s what we were listening to at the beach, the arcade, hanging with friends. That music meant so much to me, and it connects so many people to a certain time & place.
Saw Dennis about four years ago and he’s still got it
@@billymac72 Yes, original key.
73 years old - how many signers would dare to try this - STILL as great as he was from the beginning
I admire and respect the way he puts himself out there. We salute you, Dennis.
So crazy, was just listening to this last night, still kikin ass and not taking names!
No bass no synthesizers no band nothing just him fantastic job in his living room just him and his talent
AND how many would dare even attempt to sing their songs in the original key? He has quite a few high notes in his songs and the keys he sings in are typically pretty high. A TRUE professional!
Well said- 100% spot on!
It brought tears to my eyes. The voice sounds great, Dennis. ❤️
Me too, esp what he says at the end
Damn, you were so good when you were young, now at an older age you still is, you haven't lost it...I am so glad to have live & listen to you in the 1970s as a late teen & my 20s yrs, I listen to you from 1972~1990s, & now in the 2023 via RUclips... Thank You for all the wonder songs & music. Keep Doing More Videos...Stay Well & Stay Safe...
Voices like Dennis DeYoung, Steve Perry, Freddie Mercury, etc. will always be around my mind! They are the voices of my youth and my life.
The greatest ever.
So etched in our minds. They ARE a part of our lives for sure.
Steven Denton no Canadian singers in that group of singers you mentioned lol
@Steven Denton ... I agree with you 💯 % !! ... all of these are definitely the voices of my youth & life too 💜 ... and imo, at the very top of the list is Steve Perry !! ... he is "The Voice" after all, as Jon Bon Jovi named him so many years ago ......
💜💜💜🎶🎤🎶💜💜💜
@Mirror Man ... Steve Perry,
The Voice, is at the very top of my list 💜 !! ... I also like both Dennis DeYoung & Freddie Mercury (I do like Freddie's voice, that's just me) ... imo all three of these men can really sing, but Steve is my absolute fav !!
💜💜💜💜🎶🎤🎶💜💜💜💜
This man still has the pipes. Sounds like 1981. The incomparable Dennis DeYoung. No auto tune kids. Talent!
And he's 73 years old. Amazing
2ND best rock singer behind STEVE PERRY
amazing he can still sing like that
Kids should take DAMN GOOD NOTES
No auto tune EXACTLY!
Dennis DeYoung may not be with Styx anymore, but this is one of the best performances he's ever done of The Best Of Times.
It's like he never left. He just gives it his all.
No words, just chills....He's a legend
Hey did anybody say THANK YOU to Dennis DeYoung for that performance?? T H A N K Y O U ! ! !
Thank you😊👍
Just saw this this..Sounds fantastic still straight no mixer Thx Dennis Young.. l had to laugh when you said "come on everybody!" GOD BLESS YOU🙏🙏👏💖😁
God bless you Dennis beautiful thank you forget opening up your home to us good man good man
Wow. An old guy opens his mouth and a young man steps out.
Excellent comment!
What a lovely comment.
His voice is amazing...
If you take care of yourself and your voice, this is the result!
I was a young Marine when this came out. Reminds me of when I was a young man of 18
What can I say? Wow...
Whos listening now? ❤
Two years later this is still so moving. Thank you for this gift of hope to a million people.
73 years old and he's still got his chops, this guy is so super talented it's scary
I was completely blown away, I don't think he's lost any of his amazing voice!
Someone on here is jealous as hell. (Any man who had hair as thick as he had probably doesn’t need a hairpiece in later life at all. I’m guessing that’s his real hair, which he should be grateful to have. If it isn’t, so what?) He has a beautiful voice that most people will never have.
@@ravenel2 that's 100% his real hair
@hhhk20Some poor little man with no life. Jealous of the one that does have one! LOL- you've embarrassed yourself in front of close to a million of his fans!
hhhk20 Your comment is as bad as your username.
Imagine having this superhuman voice at 73.
MIKAL well DDY said he never abused any type of drugs which hindered his voice. Think about it clean living helped him big time. Props to DDY.
For real though. First thought was "goddamn. This dude still have pipes at his old age."
Sounds amazing, right?
dan w I would imagine most important not smoking too lol, take care of yourself and your body and you can look and feel great even in your 80s,, Dennis still rocks!!
Uhh.. yeah. Blown away. So beautiful.
Dennis DeYoung always was the heart and soul of STYX
Classic and irreplaceable like a diamond 💖
Everytime I see his videos, I think of what a crime it is he isn't out there with STYX - Touring and writing more timeless classics
Excellent , with no studio, his voice and feelings make it real. Long live Styx.
He's not autotune, he's not roboto, he's Dennis De young voice.
He IS Mr roboto!! Lol!
@@karenjohnson4928 😅✌️
and without him, Styx is not Styx.
@@karenjohnson4928The time has come at last, to throw away this mask. He's Kilroy, Kilroy, Kilroy, Kilroy!
He's in 70s but still sings better than a lot of pretenders nowadays
This performance made me tear up , such conviction singing from his heart, may you live to 100 sir!
Dennis isn’t “formerly” of Styx. He is Styx.
Agree!
Yeah, a legendary legit styx..
yes
The Founder of
Uno de los grandes 👍👍
He’s just as talented now as in 1981. Those WERE the best of times.
I saw STYX in ‘81 on The Paradise tour while I was stationed in Germany.Walked in just when they Started the concert with ‘Come in in and see what’s happening....
Perhaps the best of 1981, but the Ultimate Best Ever of Times was 10 years earlier.. :) This man really sings/sang, beautifully! A real musician ! Awesome breathing, voice, and vibrato ! Love it ! Thank you, Dennis DeYoung !!!!
I was born in '81!!
Here is a man that must really care about his fans. He brings us into his home and produces a great video with just a camera on his piano. Of course, he is gifted with great talent, but he does what he is supposed to do with such a gift, share it with others to bring some happiness and hope into our lives. May God bless you Dennis.
Yes may God bless you Dennis.
Dennis, your voice is the best of all time!!
Mr. DeYoung has always been a great influence on both rock and ballards in all of our lives. He is the heart and soul of Styx and will always be. He has a voice like no other and always comes across as a true gentleman and avid family man.
I never did get to see him live but you never know what the future will bring.
"Keep it in mind Dennis"
Whenever I hear the originals it brings me back to my younger days.
His new song definately shows how much he loves music, family and the good old days. Keep it up Dennis, we all love all your doing and by bringing more happiness into the world during these trying times with your music and videos. " You are the best"
Its always the best of times whenever you listen to this song!
I share it with everyone I care about.
Dennis is definitely the greatest.! What s voice and piano player. Thank you Dennis for all the times you have made me smile
I always say his mother is very proud of him!!
I graduated from high school in 1979. In my teens I grew up listening to great music that has stayed with me all my life. Styx, with Dennis DeYoung on vocals, was and remains one of my all time favorites. But it was 1979, prom night I will always remember. That night I drove a gorgeous Camaro Z-28 to the prom with my date. The T-tops were off, the weather was perfect that night in Providence, Rhode Island and Paradise Theater was playing on the stereo. My date and I were singing along and didn't have a care in the world at that moment. Peaceful, life was perfect for a moment, and that moment is forever etched in my mind, thanks to Dennis DeYoung and one of the greatest American rock bands/vocalists ever!
Rhode Island has the best seafood
I appreciate your fond memory, sounds wonderful. However, either that was prophetic or you’ve got your dates/years wrong. Paradise Theater was a 1981 product. In 1979, which was my grad year as well, Pieces of Eight was still churning out hits from it’s street date in 1978. The spring of ‘79 was when Renegade was at it’s peak. Like I said, you share a sweet memory with us but something in the sands of time might have distilled memories together for you in some way.
This guys voice doesn't age, he still can carry those notes!!
spiralout72 have you not heard him live in concert today? He sounds way better then this video. His voice live in concert is literally exactly as it was in “return to paradise” in 1997. So I would agree with beatlemans comment 100%...
@spiralout72 he sounds darn good for 73 years old. He doesn't sound exactly like he did when he was 30 but it's still the Dennis DeYoung voice
I mean he does sound the same because he still sings in original key... so
And this is why people (including myself) love Dennis DeYoung.
Words cannot describe the home performance of “Best of Times” this is one of the best songs ever written and stands up and makes so much sense today just as much as it did in 1981 & 1982. Who would have ever know fast forward “Best of Times” is reality “NOW” in 2020!
Thank you thank you thank you 🙏 Dennis! Also brings back so many memories that came rushing back!
yes, it is like a premonition, this song is so relevant now!!!, and so is Dennis, I wish he will rejoin STYX or I wish Tommy Shaw will accept him back for the sake of their fans.
I was listening to this today in November 2023. It's crazy to think that this song summed up 2020 perfectly. This really made me tear up.
The funniest part of this whole thing, he talks like an Italian mobster, but when he sings it's like an angel
carmine ruocco thats that Chicago accent
Yep.. He is from Chicago...
Awesome voice.... And he is 73!!
Sounds great....👍😊😊
No offense but he reminded me of Woody Allen with hand gestures a little.. 😳😳😳
I was thinking the SAME THING when he started talking, then started singing! It shocked me - in a good way.
@@Dirkdersoldat as an Italian from New York, I know, Ive seen Styx 7 time's, but will never ever go see them without Dennis
☺️its just amazing
Amazing voice. He's still sounds the same, and he's 73 years old.
In all fairness he hasn't worked since he left Styx
@@MrWillisReeves In all fairness you are incorrect.
He has his own band ya meathead. He’s been touring extensively since he left Styx
Dennis made Styx in my humble opinion. He's the genius and drive behind it ALL. Even JY "on tape" stated, "Dennis believed in us, always, and told us we'd be a major success one day, even when the rest of us really didn't believe it". Dennis has an INCREDIBLE work-ethic, he works and works and works - it's his blue collar roots (and those of the Panozzo brother's who he clearly loves as shown by honoring them in his beautiful new video for his new album. Dennis holds no grudge against Johnny and Chuck, it's crystal clear here). Dennis is smart folks- and I mean music biz SMART and school of hard knocks smart in one of the toughest businesses on this planet, the music biz. They signed with A&M, which for those who don't know is thee Herb Alpert of Tijuana Brass fame- he's the "A" in A&M records, later sold for about $500 million to Polygram. Herby Alpert NEVER would turn over production to almost any band- no matter how good they were. BUT, read the liners on a Styx A&M album and it says, "PRODUCED BY STYX". Translation, PRODUCED BY DENNIS folks. And Dennis rightfully gives credit that JY had a part with his engineering background to help in those control rooms. But for Herb Alpert of A&M to turn over PRODUCER ROLE to a band is rare (Richard Carpenter, of The Carpenters mega success, Richard a bonafide musical genius being one of the only other's I can think of) - but Herby handed the keys to the Ferrari over to Dennis (studio time back then, cost MEGA BUCKS w/ a mixing console alone costing $500K to $1 million, etc) and Herb Alpert let Dennis "make the album" says to me, ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW. I consider ABBA one of the greatest pop bands of all time- their record sales and world success prove it. "Their" musical genius is Benny Anderson of Sweden. Well, Benny is "on an interview" and he says, "Well, writing hit pop songs, it's PLAIN OLD HARD WORK. We, myself and Bjourn would work approx 8 hours a day and take 6 to 8 months to get the songs for each album we made (ABBA speaking). I feel, I think if I sit at this piano long enough with Bjourn here by me on guitar, I figure there's some good songs inside this old piano and if I bang away on it long enough, stick with it for hours a day, then every now and then a real good song and "maybe" a super hit good song will pop out of this piano, IF, IF I work at it hard enough, it's the only way I know how." (paraphrasing Benny Anderson). Well, WHO SAID NEAR WORD FOR WORD that genius statement? DENNIS DeYoung folks !! Dennis, half a world away from music pop song genius Benny Anderson in frozen Sweden, Dennis stated, "Well, I have this piano here, and I figure if I sit at it long enough, and I pound out chords and try ideas, once in a while a good song, a song that doesn't suck will pop out. BUT, I have to sit here and work, work hard at it, it's the only way I know how". NEAR WORD FOR WORD what Benny said = STUNNING and amazing to me folks. Geniuses think and speak alike :) Dennis stated, "In music/pop/rock music history- I know of probably 5, five song writers who can sit down and in 15 minutes write a hit tune and GOD BLESS THEM, because I can't do it. How they do it, I just don't know, but for me it's work, hard work, never giving up". I'd say Elton John, Lennon/McCartney, Barry Gibb and the Bee Gee brothers, Neil Diamond and a few others- could "give you a hit, in 15 minutes, or a day at the longest", but it's a rare, rare, rare thing. Dennis MADE STYX by sheer tenacity- hard work, constant learning and self improvement, a never give-up attitude, a great sense of humor and more. I almost fell off the computer when I heard Benny Anderson of ABBA, again, one of history's biggest selling acts of all time- state almost WORD FOR WORD what Dennis of frozen Chicago said half a planet away on "HOW DO YOU WRITE A HIT SONG", it told me all I needed to know- that Dennis has the right stuff, he's got it, and "made it" not by luck or a free ride, but a burning desire to give everything his best, to move from blue collar to working as hard as he could to achieve what he could with the talent's God gave him - and he now needs to prove himself to NO ONE. He's earned it, he's shown he has it, and he built the house called Styx and an enduring solo career. PUT DENNIS ON AN ALBUM, you pretty much get a HIT, GUARANTEED, he's not bragging, he's earned that right. How many of Styx' songs in the top 10 and their #1 were, and are "Dennis", you figure out the rest. Love ya Dennis, you teach us a LOT of life lessons- dealing w/ setbacks, "overcoming" and what HARD WORK will bring a person of integrity and honor. God speed to you- you're a good man Charley Brown, as my late father used to say :)
He will always be great...
"People lock their doors, and hide inside, rumour has it, it's the end of paradise" -- How prophetic!
Wow..!
It's exactly what I thought while listening ...
And it's The Best of Times.
Rockin the Paradise....... truly timeless and should be the fight song of America right flipping NOW
This was written in the unlikely event of Joe Biden and his socialist pals get elected...

They don't make music like this anymore ❤❤❤
You're right today no bands make music like this anymore . This is a classic song from a great band and great singer .
VJ this music represents a time in a lot of people’s life’s were it was just fantastic, the talent level was off the charts and most likely we will not see again in my lifetime at 61 years old, kind os sad about sometimes but then I break out my saved music and everything gets better.

Indeed AMAZING THIS GUY. Mr. De Young you do not stop to amaze. Thank you for the magic. Guy-Louis
Puts on an awesome show too.
Don't you mean 70s and 80s
from Mid to Late 1970's and Early 80's.
The voice, yes,, the founder, the writer of its hits, and the originator not the wannabe.
Wow. I'm stunned. That was a breathtaking performance.
Amazing
OMG his voice!! amazing...like its 1981. He can carry those high notes. YES!!
WHO in their right mind, would give a thumbs down to this! NO taste at all, this is truly brilliant, thanks Dennis xo
Dennis DeYoung hasn't lost a bit over the years.
He's been touring with his own band for over 10 years. Look him up this summer!
Dennis is the Steve Perry of Styx. A truly unique voice that just fits the songs perfectly.
RKDriver wow well said
Besides the fact that he wrote or co-wrote ALL of Styx’s songs!!!
hands down!
Dennis Deyoung
Lou Gram(Foreigner])

After 40 years, "Best of Times" remains one of my favorite songs from back in the day. Dennis' voice still sounds great!
Without him paradise is lost....😢😢😢
Time hasn't laid a glove on this mans vocal cords. Holy cow he can still sing.
Amen! Spectacular!
I'm sick of entertainers thinking they are relevant, however this guy is far and above 98% of them. What an awesome guy. .
it's unfortunate that entertainment (movies, shows, music) is not much more than a money machine now. Someone with a bankroll develops a plan, figures out what they want, then find people and force them into that mold. everything is so fake
You got that right..a humble man..love his voice
@Thelma Peckerwood Get a safe space. Stay safe!
Hard to believe Tommy Shaw tours in the name of Styx when this is the voice of Styx!!!! Gods Peace!!!!
One of the first bands that totally changed my life. And now all these years later his voice is almost indistinguishable from 1980. Such wonderful creative keyboards and vocals
Some guys still got the pipes. Dennis DeYoung, Daryl Hall. When these guys sing today, they sound just like they did 40 years ago. Unreal.
That incredible voice is still there. Styx died when Dennis left the band
100%
I would say he was ousted by Tommy Shame knowing he could wrest control of Styx. Dennis didn’t leave at all.
He will always be the guy that sings all of STYX songs.
Imagine if your grandfather was just hanging out, playing the piano, and singing in your living room-and THAT was what came out. Amazing!!
Styx has never been the same. Without him
There is no Styx without Dennis DeYoung and there never can or will be.
I agree. He is an amazing artist. Those 194 thumbs down are a holes who probably pray to the a hole Donald Trump.

No microphone, no synthesizer no enhancers just pure goodness
I'd be honored if some Styx & late 70s fans would take a listen to my acoustic piano & vocal performances of WHAT A FOOL BELIEVES by Michael McDonald and VIENNA by Billy Joel on my YT channel in tribute to that great era in music. Live acoustic with no autotune or digital editing. Peace and everybody stay safe.
That is true Real talent right there. And the fact that he can still sing to that degree speaks volumes of how
well he has taken good care of his health through the years 👍

Amazing! Mr DeYoung sounds with his voice as fresh as 40 years ago, and with the same energy. For a magical moment he made me feel like a teenager when I listened this song on the radio. Thanks Dennis DeYoung
What a guy. A GREAT songwriter, and a GREAT singer. He’s really taken care of himself. He doesn’t need a mic, or auto-tune, he just nails it. What a rock hero.
his wife Susan makes sure he takes care of it..

Hello old
Jaimee James Mikayle This is not a put down, however it would be sad if you were being disrespectful. He is 73 and still sings better than the auto tuned spokes-models on the charts today. Back in the day, you had to have amazing talent. Are there any current “artists” that you think will still be able to sing fifty years from now? Let’s make a list, everyone. I’ll start by suggesting that Adele is a possibility. Who’s next?
Looking back at this, I have to say … Thank you Dennis. 3 years ago, none of us knew what the next day would bring. These words and your beautiful performance here inspired over a million people to not give up. You rule! 🤘

filedroid he may have been there in the beginning, but it is Tommy that made STYX what it is today. And the real STYX has evolved for the best without this has been.
I didnt know dennis could still sing this beautiful. He is like a bottle of fine wine that just gets better with age..amazing!
I watched this a year ago and didn't comment, God bless you.. You are STYX forever in my mind. Thank you for your amazing music
Not only does he have an incredible voice, but for his age, it’s in incredible shape! What a gift!
Had the privilege of sharing the stage with Mr. DeYoung about 10 years ago. He sold every single tune to the absolute back of the concert hall. Even the folks who sat in 'the nosebleed seats' had the time of their lives. It was inspiring to watch- it really was. This is exactly what I would expect from him, and he did not disappoint. Dude has pipes, chops and sincerity... ya gotta love all of it.
I'm really glad I found this tonight.
It was like getting a surprise present.
Dennis Deyoung will ALWAYS and FOREVER be the "Voice of Styx"
PERIOD.
Agreed. I saw them in the 70's during 'The Grand Illusion' Tour. They were great.
Until he tried turning it from a rock band into a broadway show. He lost me there.
i would like to see Tommy and Dennis do fooling yourself together right now
Considering he's the only voice of STYX...you may be correct! You have a unique propensity to state the obvious!
I was heartbroken when he left and I refuse to see them now. It's a shame.
Dennis DeYoung is the Voice of Styx. This guy has a fantastic operatic voice that sounds as good today as it did 45 years ago. He voice defies age like a magical mystical woman. Well done Dennis. We love you....
Dear Lord, the man still has his pipes!
They, “don’t make em....like they used to”.....
keeferdog amen 🙏🏻
Mr. DeYoung....you, sir, are an incredible and genuine talent. It was a privilege to hear this now....and I grew up in the 70's and 80's listening to Styx and your amazing voice. Thank you so much for sharing yourself and that incredible talent with us at this time. You are a class act!!!
BRING BACK DENNIS!!! THE REAL VOICE OF STYX!!!!!
About 10 years ago I went to see Dennis play in Wisconsin. While driving to the venue a blizzard hit but we arrived safely. Once the concert started, Dennis saw that not many people made it to the show so he invited all 200 of us down to the front of the stage. It was like a high school prom but he and his band played an entire show for us! Great show and a great guy!
He has aged but when he opens his mouth he is still amazing what Passion and talent (Thank you)
I cannot express how deeply this has hit me.
Even now, 6 months later, it just hits the right (wrong?) places. Beautiful and prophetic.
Absolutely phenomenal! Well done sir.
wow still good voice for many decades
