@@pastorbryonscott Absolutely. That tour kicked the life out of the band, which royally pissed off the other members as Dennis' vision and extra costume and play he forced them to put on was the end of the line for them. Crazy to realize he almost got himself kicked out then at the end of the tour in '84, rather than '99. That really gave fans a direct insight into the reality of the band dynamics and health and thus the future of the band, without most recognizing it at the time. The sheer passionate excitement and love so many had back then for the band and thus the tour blinded them to the impending issues that were coming to a head as a direct result, which is why its so ironic to me.

My big Brother adored Styx. His first car was a red Ford Pinto wagon he dubbed it the Styxmobile. Babe meant so much to him and my mom. We lost him to a heart attack at the end of 2021. Styx has been a balm for our brokenhearts. Thank you Dennis for writing some of the most important music in the soundtrack of my family's life.
My Susan past away last October and I always called her my 'Babe' so that song really triggers an avalanche of emotions. I emigrated to the US in 1978 from Eastern Europe and that song impacted me immensely! It just shows when the inspirational is personal the hit is created unintentionally! God bless you, man!!!
Dennis is awesome and Styx is not Styx without him, I always hate it when iconic band's members are still around but not together! Awesome interview Professor! Thanks for keeping the music alive!
Styx is absolutely still Styx without him. With him. Without him. With JC, or with Tommy. With John, or with Todd. With Ricky, or with Chuck. With Lawrence, and/or with Glen. Doesn't matter. All iterations are still 100% authentic Styx, and equally as enjoyable, skilled and phenomenal, as well as incredibly fun.
@@TheCriminalViolinYour ignorance of the (sometimes not so) subtle differences between original and current Styx, whether studio or live, apparently caused you to leave out one critical phrase from your comment. And that is: "in my opinion."
The band describes the relationship as like a marriage. Married young like forming the band, writing songs like having kids. Then a falling out...a couple of attempts at reconciliation. A couple of reunion tours like showing up together for " the kids wedding"...but then in the end: just too many old scars and wounds to live together( work as a band). Plus both he and they have " carried on" and had other members( marriages) Band says not worth the heartache.Sorry.
One needs to acknowledge those who have been part of the group, through 50 years. Chuck, John, Dennis, Tom N.JY. John Curulewski. Tommy. Glen. Todd. Gowan.Ricky, and Will. 12 members. Never just 1 person.
There are a bunch of us out there that LOVE Styx and LOVE Dennis DeYoung. Thank you for this episode and the interview. Now let’s get Styx into the RRHOF please!
Styx is an incredible band, and Dennis DeYoung is an amazing vocalist. Styx is another band that should have been enshrined in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, but the Hall of Shame keeps screwing up year after year.
Styx is my favorites rock band. Since Dennis DeYoung left they aren't even half the band they were. I think the greatest thing about Dennis DeYoung is the fact he has been with his beautiful wife since 1973. In this crazy world 🌎 we should strive to be him. It really warms my heart learning that Dennis wrote Babe for his beloved Suzanne, as it’s also my and my hubby’s song since we got together in 1980. ❤️
Saw the great Dennis DeYoung as the warm up band for Boston at the Greek Theater about 6 years ago and he was WAY BETTER than Boston. Played all the great Styx songs. He's a totally cool dude.
What a fun, informative, and entertaining interview. I grew up on Styx and covered them with my band in High School. I love how cerebral and witty Dennis is. What a pleasure to get to know my favorite artists through these fun visits. Thank you, Adam
Massive respect for DeYoung. Lady is an all time favorite. He’s loaded with talent, but Styx had a rock vision. Tommy Shaw - Renegade, they needed to separate. Saw Styx last year, fantastic show. Thanks Adam.
I love hearing the backstory of how songs came to be. This was just beautiful. I've always loved the song and it means so much more knowing it was meant for his wife. I like "cheesy". 😄
Dennis channeling his inner Jerry Lewis as he talks about Babe being "cheesy" caught me by surprise. I had no idea how funny he is. Dessert Moon is an under appreciated song. It is an achingly beautiful ballad that should have had much more air time. Every time I hear it, I can see the events it describes as if I was watching a movie. Thank you so much for this interview! Your comment, "Your songs have gotten me through some great times, and some really crappy times. And I just really appreciate it." really hit home.
I bought the 45 for my sister on her birthday. We were teen agers then. Im 59 now. Wow how time flies. Also my older brother was a huge styx fan. The world was so much better then
I grew up as a teen listening to Styx had every record they made. Wore most of the albums out. Dennis DeYoung is so talented and wrote some fabulous songs..still can sing too! My crush was Tommy. Its so sad that they couldn't work things out..one heck of a band.
I would have to agree if only Tammy and Dennis could’ve worked things out then they could’ve continued on the sticks and I think sticks are still one of the greatest bands ever.
Tommy is the only one who refuses to work things out. Even John Lennon and Paul McCartney worked things out and restored their friendship before John was assassinated.
One of my all time favorite bands. I've gotten to see them live several times, and was always such fun. Babe has been one of those songs that stays in your heart after hearing it. I love Dennis's song writing ability. Desert Moon is another favorite song of his.
Always loved STYX. One of my favorite bands from the 70s. Denis DeYoung has a great and distinctive voice and like his solo stuff as well. Thanks for doing this video, love your show. RZ
I’m a HUGE fan of Styx. Had their poster on my wall in high school, and money from my first HS job went to my first album - “Paradise Theatre”. Your interviews with Dennis DeYoung are fantastic, and they make me fangirl pretty hard. He’s a legend.
I have a special memory with Styx, that makes me smile everytime i think about it. I was 9 or 10. I was visiting family and noticed that my cousin brought over his Walkman. I asked if i could listen to it. Because this was a novelty, at that time He said sure....i didnt even look to see what tape he had in it. I put the headphones on, pushed play.. and the magical intro to Mr. Roboto filled my ears....it was the coolest thing i had ever experienced. Now, I've had many awesome experiences. But, that unexpected innocent reaction, still sticks with me. So, I must send a heartfull of gratitude to Mr. DeYoung and Styx for that moment. Thank you. ❤😊
I spent my coming of age years listening to Styx. I've seen Styx live probably 5 times and they've always put on a great show. The vocals and music performed live sound as good as they did in the studio and the showmanship is equally as entertaining. I know it will probably never happen but I'd like to see Dennis, Tommy and James get back together for a live show.
Man, Styx was so much a part of my early music years and has never faded. When Babe comes on the radio, I'm the guy you see singing cruising down the highway who doesn't care what I look like. The music is just too good to let it matter.
That opening keyboard part, is just so sweet and pretty. It's a wonderful song in general. What a wonderful birthday gift, and thank you, Dennis and Suzanne, for sharing it.
I LOVE INTERVIEWS WITH DENNIS...HE JUST SEEMS SO NATURAL AND FUNNY IN HIS DELIVERY OF HIS RESPONSES. HIS TONE READS LIKE...AND IF YOU DON'T LIKE WHAT I'M SAYIN' OR HOW I'M SAYIN' IT...TOUGH ON YA'. LOVE IT! AND ON STAGE,WHAT A SHOWMAN..
Some of the 1st music I ever bought on vinyl were Styx records. Crystal Ball, Pieces Of Eight. I actually sang "Babe" as a duet in 1981 at our Homecoming dance with a girl from our Choraliars group in Silverton, Oregon. The song was still so popular then. Wonderful memories I will never forget from a time where the music truly stood still. 💜 🎶
Love Dennis, he has this hard exterior but inside he is all heart because without that he could have never written these songs that are straight from the heart and so athletic. I am going to check out his latest by your link now. Thanks professor.
July 13th 1985 Live Aid- the greatest juke box on earth and such a special day. Timeless memories of this day in history. The music and the cause live on but it is sad at the same time to reflect on those we have lost who played that day and in our own lives.
@@ProfessorofRock I wish it were possible. I can still see the day and remember the weather in the North West of England ( drizzle in the morning and then sunny intervals from midday UK time onwards when the concert started).
I have been fortunate enough to have seen Styx four times over the years. More than game for making it five times. Thank you for all the great music and memories!
I saw Styx last year in concert and they were amazing, extremely polished and just consummate showmen. I went to the concert to see REO Speedwagon and they were great too but Styx was on another level. Tommy Shaw still looks like an absolute rockstar.
Same here. Went to the concert in Ridgefield, Washington either on the dot to date last year, or it was the 14th, but either way it was phenomenal and the best night of my life so far easily! Could not be a bigger diehard of the band, they're in my blood and DNA at this point, a literal part of my soul and being. My dad went with me, for him exclusively to see Styx, though I was excited for both REO and Styx, though Styx will always be my favorite by far, so REO would never compare. The sound engineers screwed up the audio for REO's first three songs, but after that it was good, and relatively enjoyable. Always love Kevin's stories he goes into in-between songs. Adds a wonderful element of personal flair to it. Because it was in Ridgefield, and at 7 on a weekday in the summer, we of course got stuck in traffic for 3 1/2 hours to drive 56 miles lol. So we missed all but the last song of Loverboy's set.
I have such an appreciation for Dennis DeYoung and his songwriting. I think his songwriting style didn't fit the direction the other members of Styx wanted to take the band. However, it was the line-up that included DeYoung that made Styx the powerhouse rock band that it was.
I LOVE this song!! I had a cat years ago I used to sing it to!! It made me cry for years!! I even wrote Babe I love you on a piece of paper and put it in her coffin. Her real name was Janie but she would always come to me when I sang this song!! Thank you!!
I saw STYX a few nights ago at Milwaukee's Summerfest. My sister was waiting for Babe, she saw them before & they didn't play it. I had heard they don't play it because Dennis wrote it for his wife. 😢 I checked the internet & found out I was right. She was bummed. GREAT show anyway !! Not all fans care why bands play what they play, but she totally understood.
What a great interview. Dennis DeYoung is one of the best singer/songwriters ever. STYX is not complete without him. I totally agree with you on how much his music has meant to me. Dessert Moon is a perfect song as well and the video one of the best ever. Thanks for the great interview!!
@@ProfessorofRock I also really like your video with Al Stewart for Year of the Cat. I would love to hear more about Time Passages. It is one of my all-time favorite songs.
I have 2 bands that have influenced my life. Not just in growing up, but also in living life and growing older. One is Rush, the other is Styx. To say that Dennis DeYoung is (whom I call "The Voice of a Generation") a legend, is an understatement. This man has produced song after song that has been so special to so many. As an amateur singer (never wanted to be a professional), Dennis DeYoung's voice is what I have tried to aspire to. The clarity and power that he can (and still can) produce at the same time is simply astonishing. This is a personal favorite song of mine, and if I might have a moment of self-indulgence, a song I have won karaoke contests with. Thank you, PoR for this interview. Thank you, Dennis DeYoung.
Such a distinctive style and the keyboard intro sets them apart. Great story about Babe! ♥️♥️♥️I was a teenager when Lady came out, I was hooked. We all wanted someone to feel about us the way DeYoung felt about his wife in Lady and Babe. He set a high bar!
Being snarky 10th graders when Babe came out, my friends and I thought it was too syrupy for Styx ... After all, we were used to Renegade and Grand Illusion.... Babe got a TON of airplay as well... I appreciate it much more now... We felt the same way when Journey came out with Open Arms a couple years later....
@@ProfessorofRock I have, with Dennis De Young's replacement on keys. I thought the band sounded great and that guy could play the keys behind his back... Mind boggling, but even with that you can't replace Dennis!
Styx is one of my favourite bands of all time! They were one of 2 bands I saw live during my teen years, the other being the Beach Boys. Both put on amazing shows! Not to take anything away from other eras but for me, the 70s and 80s were an amazing time to be alive when it came to awesome music!
Styx is by far my favorite band. Back in high school in the 80s when "color copies" on a printer became a new thing, I copied every single Styx album front and back and wallpapered them to my bedroom wall. Dennis not being in the band is heartbreaking. Especially since his iconic voice, songwriting talent and keyboard skills are still at a very high level. To hear that Dennis' bandmates ENCOURAGED Dennis to put "Babe" on the Cornerstone album only to turn around and use their only #1 single against him in some strange false narrative perpetuated by V H-1's "Behind The Music" to drive a wedge between the Styx fanbase is an absolute travesty. Thank you Professor for another heartfelt, informative and provocative interview with Dennis.
It seems Tommy Shaw and James Young wanted to be a hard rock band but Dennis hated the idea of being hard rock. he just wanted pop with a hint of progressive even though he did stick his toe in the hard rock metal genre with “Queen Of Spades” from “Pieces Of Eight” album, Dennis just didn’t feel comfortable with that label with Styx being hard rock. so he lightened it a little with the next album “Cornerstone” with the song “Babe”, Tommy and JY weren’t too happy with this formula. They were hard rockers! This was the beginning of the end for Styx. As much as love Dennis and how i think he was THE founder of Styx, i really wish thay Tommy and JY had thier way because i just identify with Styx better as a hard rock band. Sorry, Dennis…😞
really what about suite madame blue by dennis and grand illusion castle walls lorelie born for adventure rockin the paradise etc. deyoung only cared about great songs not your labels.
Dennis DeYoung is a songwriting genius, an excellent vocalist and, by all accounts, a really nice guy as well. When you thanked him for the songs in the end, I feel like you represented all of us!

The sheer passionate excitement and love so many had back then for the band and thus the tour blinded them to the impending issues that were coming to a head as a direct result, which is why its so ironic to me.
The intro of "Babe" is so iconic! That electric piano really sets the mood. It's still played many many times on adult contemporary radio stations here in Brazil
Very cool! Have you ever seen them live.
@@ProfessorofRock Unfortunately no. But "Babe" and "The Best Of Times" are always present in my playlists. Hey Professor, could you please make an episode about "Woman In Chains" by Tears For Fears? One of the best songs ever and I think it doesn't get the recognition it deserves. Definitely a "Number 1 In Our Hearts"
It’s a great intro. So glad to hear its staying power.
I really like the interviews with Dennis. He's a great storyteller and a funny guy, not to mention his amazing talent.
Dennis is awesome and Styx is not Styx without him, I always hate it when iconic band's members are still around but not together! Awesome interview Professor! Thanks for keeping the music alive!
It’s like a broken relationship.
I still think that he is a top 5 rock vocalist .
Serious? Your favorite? That's awesome. How many times have you seen them live?
@@ProfessorofRock 12-16x Styx Rush U2 . But Styx hasn't done anything worthwhile without Dennis DeYoung. If I call a woman Babe that means she's mine! Ever since I Started dating!
@@annatrail2042 Hey Sister Wang ,👋I am so glad to see 👀 you here. You are truly one of the best things about this community here with ProRo! How's my niece doing this morning? How colorful are we talking about? You know it's been so long since I had someone to call Babe. The last one looked like Babe Ruth. The one before had blue hair like Babe the Blue Ox 🐂
@@annatrail2042 I'm going to be accepting applications soon. Should I expect 1 from you ?🤞
For 50 years, they’ve been together. I’d love to meet his wife.
Babe is one of the best love ballads of all time. It's just straight up honest and pure. No pretense and no backdoor emotion.
Dennis De Young is a national treasure. As the guitarist formally of the band Renegade I'm qualified to nominate him.
It really warms my heart learning that Dennis wrote Babe for his beloved Suzanne, as it’s also my and my hubby’s song since we got together in 1980. ❤️
Such a legendary voice. There’s nobody like Dennis.
It’s like we’re in the room listening to Dennis.
I love how you get the actual artists to interview. Allows me to relate to the music industry even more.
The world was so much better then
"Babe" is beautiful & timeless...and one of those songs that I genuinely feel, even when I was a young lad & still now, some 40+ years later.
I grew up as a teen listening to Styx had every record they made. Wore most of the albums out. Dennis DeYoung is so talented and wrote some fabulous songs..still can sing too! My crush was Tommy. Its so sad that they couldn't work things out..one heck of a band.
He’s hilarious too.
@@jesserussell7242 Styx isn't bad, either.
RZ
I'd love to just hang out with Dennis. He's such a great storyteller.
Agreed!
Never get tired of his wittiness.
I’m a HUGE fan of Styx. Had their poster on my wall in high school, and money from my first HS job went to my first album - “Paradise Theatre”. Your interviews with Dennis DeYoung are fantastic, and they make me fangirl pretty hard. He’s a legend.
Awesome! Have your seen them live?
I had a poster from their Caught in the Act album on the door of my locker. Y'know, just for a break between classes. Lol.
@@ProfessorofRock I've heard they're great live, but without Dennis, it's just not Styx.
@@jessehayes486 Mine was from The Grand Illusion.
Dennis is always fun.
I got to hear him sing it, with his wife in the backup group, ON VALENTINES DAY, in Phoenix
We never missed them in concert in the 70s or 80s. Definitely the best band playing live ❤ ✌ thanks the best of times!!
Rock on!
The best of times, as Styx would say, indeed. Those were the days.
Good times and bad times. Their music was always there.
Fantastic voice and fantastic song writer !Styx is not styx without you !
Ha! A fellow Oregonian and Styx fan! I love that. Hello from the Aloha area!
7:48 Look at all that success. You have to admire all his accomplishments.
Love Dennis, he has this hard exterior but inside he is all heart because without that he could have never written these songs that are straight from the heart and so athletic. I am going to check out his latest by your link now. Thanks professor.
All heart! What would you like to see next?
I truly believe it’s a genuine love letter to his wife considering they’ve been married for 50 years.
@@ProfessorofRock did he talk about the song grand illusion, it fits so perfectly in this age of social media and Facebook
I never realized they had top 3 hits in the 70s, 80s and 90s!
Without googling are the two other bands U2 and Santana?
July 13th 1985 Live Aid- the greatest juke box on earth and such a special day. Timeless memories of this day in history. The music and the cause live on but it is sad at the same time to reflect on those we have lost who played that day and in our own lives.
I was thinking that this morning. 38 years!

LEt's go back.
@@ProfessorofRock not sure I want to. Not a good time for me.
One of the most incredible concerts I’ve seen…..August 24, 1981, Norfolk, VA Scope Arena. An entire night of Styx!
Absolute classic Power Ballad.
From the band who really created it!
Of the highest order.
I walk away from that interview with one question hanging...
HOW does anyone NOT like this guy?????
I have such an appreciation for Dennis DeYoung and his songwriting. I think his songwriting style didn't fit the direction the other members of Styx wanted to take the band. However, it was the line-up that included DeYoung that made Styx the powerhouse rock band that it was.
I like when he said"its not for you,it's for Suzanne. You cant have it" Speaks volumes about how he loves his wife
I LOVE this song!! I had a cat years ago I used to sing it to!! It made me cry for years!! I even wrote Babe I love you on a piece of paper and put it in her coffin. Her real name was Janie but she would always come to me when I sang this song!! Thank you!!
Thanks for sharing your memory!
@@ProfessorofRock you're welcome!!
So sweet.

Haha, “Dessert Moon”. Like eating moon pies? It’s DESERT Moon. 😅
Styx music is great but the LYRICS are memorable and can magically transport the listener to another place and time.
Love Styx. Love Dennis DeYoung's solo hit "Desert Moon" too.

Somehow I had forgotten how great Styx and Dennis DeYOung had been. Thanx for the tribute video.
😂
Truth!
I understand. It's a timeless song that will continue to be played. Have you ever seen them live?
@@ProfessorofRock I have, with Dennis De Young's replacement on keys. I thought the band sounded great and that guy could play the keys behind his back... Mind boggling, but even with that you can't replace Dennis!
My sentiment on Babe was the same as yours; I only later discovered there was charm in the song.
Dennis deserved so much better.
I can see why you enjoy interviewing Dennis, what great guy, no bullshit!
Dennis keep on rockin!
"Babe" is a great song, I think " Lady" is a better song, love the story of "Lady", Thank you John "Records" Landecker ❤
