I remember my 5th grade teacher telling us to bring in our 45s & she'll play them on her record player for the class. I brought this song. 😎
Some good taste for a 5th grader.
I remember bringing out some 45s when my pre-teen niece and nephew were visiting and they look at them astonished and asked: "Are those records?"
They had never seen one before. And this was like 25 years ago.
@ Bill Graper My music teacher said the same thing, it was grade 6 and our classmate brought in Elton John's - "The Bitch is Back". You would of thought the title would of tipped him off, but no, that song played until it hit the chorus. Best music class in the life of a grade 6er!! 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Every week I would go down to the Waxie Maxie’s and buy my favorites on 45 and this song was certainly part of my collection I was between 11 and 12 years old when this song was released I love it! 🙏🏽✌🏽🌎♥️
The album was the greatest thing of my youth….
Styx was my High School Prom band, 1981 and The Best of Times was our THEME SONG for that Prom!
Styx was voted the best overall rock band in my High School in LA. In 1978. Thanks for your comment
Picture this: It's the 70's early 80's and you're at the local burger joint and they have a jukebox playing music in the background. It's your turn to make your order with the attendant and "The Best of Times" comes on and it's the first time you've heard this new song from Styx. You turn towards the jukebox and take a quick listen. You nod your head in approval and then go back to ordering your meal, taking for granted all the great music being produced at the time. Believe it or not this was how it used to be when music was churned out like it was our God given right to hear great music every day of every month of every year during those decades. What a great time to be alive.
so well said.
one of the most underrated bands in the history of ever
I don't think underrated..... But maybe misunderstood.. Still sold millions though😊
Styx was not in any way an underrated band. They were considered one of the giants of the arena stadium rock god era of the 70s. So no, not underrated in the slightest LOL
Underrated is a fair description, considering they’re not in the rock n roll hof.
I find it hard to believe no one has mentioned “Babe” yet. It was the only Styx song to reach #1 in the US.
They've already done Babe
So good
@@timmypyron2830 I didn’t know….I will have to go back and check it out.
@@timmypyron2830 what about "Lady"?
@@fionnmaccumhaill3257 no not yet, they will eventually. They get a lot of requests for it
Jay & Amber, you'll love their "Lady" (ballad)!!
Saw them on the Cornerstone tour in 1979. That song was the highlight of the album.
Couldn't agree more 💜💜💜
The original one, released in 1972-3, not the re-mastered version.
Am I weird for liking Babe more?
I feel like I'm in the minority.
Loved "Lady" and always will.
The Grand Illusion or Fooling Yourself are both essential Styx songs and should be in your to do list.
Styx is my favorite band since the 70's. There are really so many songs to do, I could name them all day. Thanks for getting back to them.
Agreed! Castle Walls, Man In The Wilderness, Come Sail Away and Snowblind are some of my favorites, as well!
Suite Madame Blue.
And go way back and do "You Need Love" and "I'm Gonna Make You Feel It"
@@O_Towne_Bear You're going back to the Wooden Nickel era.
@@O_Towne_Bear Shall we talk about Plexiglass Toilet?
If it's a romantic Styx song, it was probably the work of Dennis DeYoung, who was with the band until 1999. Like "Babe" and "Lady," he wrote and sang "The Best of Times."
"For me, the song is simple," he told Songwriter Universe. "It's when the world goes mad, how do you cope? And in this instance, it's the love between two people, that they make their own paradise within their companionship, their love for each other, and their own home... it's saying that the best of times are when I'm alone with you."
Dennis DeYoung got the title from the 1859 Charles Dickens novel A Tale Of Two Cities, which opens with the famous passage: "It was the best of times, it was the worst of times."
This was the first single from the Paradise Theatre album, which had a loose concept centered around the rise and fall of a theater in Chicago, where the band is from. In that context, the song recalls the glory days of the Paradise Theatre; the word "paradise" shows up three times in the lyric, and can allude to either the building or the state of mind:
Rumor has it it's the end of Paradise
...
I wish the summer winds could bring back Paradise
...
But tonight will always last
As long as we keep alive memories of Paradise
(Songfacts.com)
Babe was a huge hit in 1979,
Mmmm Hmmm! I know that's right!
This song came out during the very bad recession of 1981. There were NO jobs to be had. This song gave a ray of hope to people. One of my favorite Styx songs.
I was working IN Astoria Oregon i was living good
And took new meaning during lockdowns and anxiety when the Pandemic burst onto the scene.
The whole album references this time in the country. So good.
And the band is from the far Southside of Chicago in any area which was particularly hard hit when steel mills started to close….
It was terrible. I’m a native Chicagoan and all the media that people reference from then wasn’t true for those of us that lived in the inner city. Styx were a bean of sunshine and my hometown heroes.
This is my first time hearing this song and all I can say is wow!
Boat on the River. I can't stress this song enough. So underrated! That mandolin! Chills!
ikr
Yes. 100%
my favorite.. and even though underrated, everyone who hears it is impressed.
I love the live version with the Contemporary Youth Orchestra.
One of my favs for sure, as well as Castle walls....love the imagery in that one. B.O.T.R. has a great mandolin part for sure.
One of the mist underrated lead singers of a rock band if all time. His voice is magical
The entire album Paradise Theater is a masterpiece. Every song is awesome.
Hey guys, happy Hump day! 🐫
My favorite Styx song is "Show me the way". I can't wait for you to eventually get to that one. 😃
Love that one! Also Come Sail Away
a great song
“Suite Madame Blue” is a great one from these guys that doesn’t get nearly enough love. I also like “Crystal Ball”, “Renegade”, and “Lady”.
That's a song that doesn't get enough play :) Would love to hear them do Suite Madame Blue
If they do "Suite Madame Blue," I hope they do one of the live versions. Dennis holds a note for such a long time when he does live versions of that song, it's astounding to me. Every time I hear it, I'm surprised by how long he can hold it in the middle of the song. Anyone who is curious about this, definitely check out a live version of the song to see what I'm talking about. And I've seen Dennis four times live (1991, 1997, 1998 and 2009 (solo)), and it's always the greatest moment in any concert.
Lorelei is a great song too!
Pieces of Eight of a great album too .. Lord of the Rings and Aku Aku are so good from that album ❤️
The whole Paradise Theater Album was indescribable. In my young mind it was incredible that every song on the album included the word Paradise in the lyrics somewhere. The album cover told the story of the Paradise Theatre from the grand opening on the front to is final destruction on the back and the story on the inside of the cover. The backside of the album has a beautiful 3-D ? Image of the Styx logo and the Paradise theater itself, you have to hold it just right but it is there. If you guys get the chance Listen to the whole album from start to finish, you won't regret it I promise. Also if you get the chance I believe you would really enjoy The Eagles Lying Eyes , The lyrics are so sad but the music is incredible.
I loved that album as a concept so much.
The only exceptions to the inclusion of "paradise" in the lyrics (not counting the short instrumental 'State Street Sadie,' of course) are 'She Cares,' and 'Half Penny, Two Penny,' probably because they were written by Shaw and Young, respectively, and kinda stood a bit outside the overall concept of the album. But yes, all of the songs penned by DeYoung, plus 'Snowblind,' penned by Young, include "paradise" in the lyrics, a fact I too have enjoyed. And no, it just so happens that I'm NOT especially fun at parties; why do people keep asking me that?
If you truly love Dennis's voice you really have to check out his solo hit desert Moon. My favorite song of all time
Yes! I love that one!
Video is perfection! Transports me right back to a certain time.
Love this video even tho a little sad!
I would argue they would need to check out "Suite: Madame Blue" from "Caught In The Act Live"
Yes! This!❤❤❤
Graduation 1983
Styx ...on of the greatest bands of that era.
The Paradise Theatre Tour was so good. One of my favorite bands during high school and college years.
This is such an anthem for those us who grew up in the 70s and 80s.
my HS grad class used this as part of our Senior theme "Best of Times, Best of Friends". 37 years later, I'm still friends with most of them.... what fond memories!!!
the tone of dennis deyoung’s voice is just so crystal-clear and flows so effortlessly. I could listen to him all day.
Yes indeed my favorite part is at the end when he sings “when I’m alone with you everything’s alright when I’m alone with you, you brighten up the night” ♥️
@@mauriciodelarosa2449 it’s beautiful. one of the absolute best voices in rock - no question. and dude is a songwriting genius.
His voice is amazing I just don’t like him
True. That
The piano and the guitar…Wow
Dennis De Young's voice is so recognizable and absolutely captivating.
The harmonies are heavenly. Styx always
with beautiful guitars that complete a great production everytime. Glad you loved it. 🎶🎶
Buckets of Maple Syrup love from Canada ❤️ ❤️ 🇨🇦🇨🇦
Dennis DeYoung is singing lead vocals on this one. He has a beautiful voice. Lots of vibrato in his singing 👍🏻
Unfortunate they split up, but Dennis wanted to do more crooning and everyone else wanted to do more rockin'. Both tour separately playing STYX tracks now.
This is one of my all time favorite bands.
Released in the Spring of 1981, it was a beloved Graduation song for that year.❤
This song was one of their biggest hits from their #1 album "Paradise Theatre". A timeless classic that is perhaps more relevant today than it was back in the 80s. Pure magic, great Styx memories that last a lifetime.
I still own my copy, inner lining and all. Unfortunately the hologram has faded.
Dennis DeYoung did a solo version from his house a year or so ago during lockdowns. Still sounds as good. You can find the video on YT.
That song went well during the lockdown -- as long as you were with the people you love.
Yes he was good and the lyrics took an all new meaning in the pandemic situation.
ruclips.net/video/vVzx-VO0RpI/видео.html This is the link to his pandemic from home version of this song. He still can sing beautifully!!
Come sail away is a absolute must by Styx to me it's not STyx without Dennis!
They already did CSA but they should do it again because the video version they did was the shortened radio release that didn't have the keyboard bridge found on the album The Grand Illusion. Definitely worth a redo.
Absolutely! Come Sail Away was my high school senior class song, the lyrics still get to me, the more poignant the older I get
You want to be even more amazed by Dennis DeYoung's voice than listen to the live version of Suite Madame Blue. There is a line he sings "We'll conquer the world and more." He holds the final note for 38 seconds. Just fantastic.
My favorite song from the Equinox album. Actually that is my favorite Styx album.
'heavens door'
Ditto. I’ve suggested this one several times.
Styx was popular when I was in high school. I haven't heard this song in probably decades but as soon as Dennis started singing, so did I.
This song came off the Paradise album back in 1981. I was at the ripe old age of 20 and listened to this album both A and B side over and over! Loved every song on it!!!
Styx was my husbands favorite group-when we took our kids to Myrtle Beach it was a 12 hour drive, he “forced” both sides on them going to and from MB. Now after losing him two years ago it is an album that not only brings back some memories but he introduced our daughter to what grew into being one of her favorites as well. She now is 26 and LOVES Styx as well😊
Do you remember the "oil imprint" of the angels on the vinyl?
@@O_Towne_Bear Oh yeah, the laser-etched picture, very cool...The Split Enz album True Colours also did this.
LOL.... in '81 I was a ripe old age of 15 and wore out countless cassettes playing Paradise over/over/over.... 😎🤓
This song is from the Paradise Theater album. The entire album is fire. Several songs go together and if played in order will play right into the next song in line. Rocking the Paradise, Too Much Time on My Hands and Nothing Ever Goes as planned are all great songs to check out.
Styx was such a great band. And guys if you listen to Neil Sedaka you can add him to that piano list along with Elton John and them...
Crystal Ball is my favorite STYX song. Maybe my favorite song by anyone. Tommy Shaw sings and plays lead guitar on it. You should check out the live version from Return to Paradise.
This was written and sung by Dennis DeYoung. Lady by Styx that's the one you have to react to next!
This was the theme for my Jr Prom.
Definitely the best of times. Definitely memories that will last a lifetime. ❤
I recently posted this explanation of the difference between a talk box and a vocoder on another reaction, hope it helps: The Talk Box has a metal coil that vibrates when you play the guitar, those sound vibrations travel up and out of the tube. The tube is inserted just far enough into the mouth cavity for the changing shape of your mouth to modify/alter the sound of the guitar. That sound then has no place to go but back out of the mouth and into the microphone which gets amplified just like when his voice when he is singing. You don’t make any noise, just manipulate the guitar sound with the shape of your mouth. In certain cases, like “Do you feel, like we do” the effect is used to manipulate the guitar sound into words by mouthing the intended words to make the guitar seem to be “talking.” Often confused with the vocoder which came slightly later with the advent of the synthesizer and typically used in conjunction with keyboard. In that case the person would sing or say words into the mic/vocoder input and then manipulate the sound of that voice and words electronically with the keyboard synth. This more clearly sounds like the words that were just spoken or sung but then modulated or synthesized and typically made to sound robotic or very futuristic techno, like in this song.
I've seen Styx live more than any bands I've seen, and that's a sh!t load. They are great live!
Every time they toured LA
Along with Queen, Billy Joel, Jethro Tull, Linda Ronstadt, Fleetwood Mac & others.
Styx would be second only to RUSH for me (re: amount of shows). Caught every tour from Grand Illusion to Paradise Theater.
I used my vacation time at my first "real" job to follow them all over Florida one summer!
It's a shame they can't patch things up with Dennis.
@@DerekDominoes Dennis wanted them to become a Vaudeville act, the other guys are rockers.
So happy to see you doing Styx again! Especially to see another Dennis song! You will like Lady, Show Me The Way, and Grand Illusion, all by Styx, or Dennis’s solo hit Desert Moon or This Is The Time, another solo song of his that was featured in The Karate Kid Part II
Someone has already recommended Neil Sedaka to you. His career has been ongoing since 1957! He's 83 years young. And he's wonderful. He has had tons of hits. He's a songwriter aswell, penning most of (if not all) his hits, as well as writing songs for others, like "Stupid Cupid" by Connie Francis. Neil's hits include... "Oh Carol" "Breaking Up Is Hard To Do" "Solitaire" "Laughter In The Rain" "Calendar Girl" "Happy Birthday Sweet Sixteen". Here's hoping you get to him soon. ❤ 🎵🎼🎙
Good choice! "Breaking Up Is Hard To Do" and "Laughter In The Rain" are favorites!
It's a sin that Sadaka is not in the R&R Hall of Fame.
OOPS....Sedaka - not Sadaka.
I think the song "Carol" is about Carol King.
@@jayritchie851 he's in the Songwriting Hall of Fame. He also has a star on the Hollywood Walk Of Fame
This Styx song was pretty popular when I was in high school, certainly not a banger, but it was pretty good! Please react to Suite Madame Blue and Crystal Ball two classics from them! Thank you for your reaction!
Yeah I tell you you know how old dirty is don't you you're a little bit older than that h***
I gotta kill a little bit brother who is your brother who is about to sign mage I guess I was probably about 17 years old and it's resolved and I actually saw the grand illusion tour delusion tour I saw sticks in concert during the grand illusion tour Dennis DE young in space slice sticks out but the whole concert was very good very good dentisty young

Styx is one of most beloved rock bands of all time🙂
Mr. Roboto by Styx. I remember as a teen playing it like two times on a jukebox while visiting Pizza Hut in the 80s. Great time.
To me, every song from them is like this. Miss America, Suite Madam Blue, Crystal Ball, Grand Illusion.... just a few of my favorites 😍
By the way, Dennis still sounds this amazing.
Yeah, during Covid, Dennis did a couple of live performances from his house. Just him and a piano. Dude still sounds amazing in his 70s. Still hits those notes.
@@bsanderfer I was pleasantly astounded.
Styx was one of the great 70-80's bands who performed live as good as their studio recordings.
They had a top 10 hits in the 1990s with Show Me The Way. Styx is one of the rare club that has a top ten hit in three different decades.
THEY WERE more popular in the 70s , And that was when there biggest hits were.
3 words ... Perfect Vocal Harmony
Styx has been my favorite band since 1979. My first concert was July 31, 1981; Styx - Paradise Theatre. Love Styx!!!! A list of other songs from them are; Don’t Let It End, Suite Madame Blue, Lady, Lorelei.
Styx was my first concert too. April, 1981, Philadelphia. How can that be 41 years ago? Seems like yesterday.
A rarity for a rock star, Dennis has been married to the same woman for 52yrs. Another great pianist is Leon Russell.
'Suite Madame Blue" is a great tune as well.
Styx live Return to Paradise is the ultimate Styx live concert. It starts with this song and just gets better and better.
My favorite Styx song!! Thank you so much.
From the same album, "Rockin' the Paradise" and "Snowblind" are both worth a listen.
Great songs from a great album, probably their best IMO.
Half Penny Two Penny is a cool song also.
For piano and singing, you should NEVER leave Freddie Mercury off of any list.
Meh.. not that good.
Those were the best of times, growing up listening to Styx. This is one of their best songs.
Before they were famous they used to practice across from my high school. The upper class girls skipped school and got pictures with them. That whole album is great.
The clipping or warbling during the audio playback portion (not your voices) was gone for several videos now, but it's back in this one. I've always loved this band.
Guys, you really can't have a discussion about rock pianists without spending significant time on Keith Emerson of Emerson, Lake & Palmer (ELP). He doesn't do the singing (bassist Greg Lake takes those duties) but he's at the very heart of what this band is so, if you're feeling a little more adventurous, give the title track from their album Trilogy a listen. It starts off absolutely gorgeous with not much more than piano and vocals before taking off into a raucously rockin' tour de force.
Have you listened to any Ray Charles yet? He's the epitome of a double threat pianist/vocalist. It's hard to pick one track out of his extensive library but one of my personal faves is his rendition of Oh, What a Beautiful Morning. He takes that song to an entirely new level!
And of course, there's always Barry Manilow, who only wrote and performed some of the most beautiful, piano-based ballads of the 70s.
Saw styx with reo and loverboy last summer. What a concert! We did live in the " best of times." I'll always be grateful.
One of my Favorite all time songs!!!! 💕♥️🥰👏👏👏
One very talented band great music and harmonies.
There is one group you cannot leave out of the 7O's era. That is the Osmond Brothers and Donny Osmond and Marie Osmond. They were as big as any group at that time.
Are you kidding me lol QUEEN LED ZEPPELIN ACDC FORIEGNER AREOSMITH BOSTON KISS ABBA Were a sample of 70s GREATNESS
this song was all over the radio when it came out. they are one of my favorites of all times.
was such a shame when they broke up.
and yes, Dennis was wonderful on the keyboard.
Blue Collar Man- Styx. J/A, this is another banger And Tommy Shaw delivers in this masterpiece! Love to see you react to this one.
Great choice, I hope you enjoy it, one of my favorite bands 😊❤
One of the greatest albums of all time.
Favorite Styx song ever and there’s a ton of great ones
S T Y X - Crystal Ball 1977 🔮 another one of those super Rockin' Ballads by this awsome band part of their greatest hits
I would put Bruce Hornsby in the same category as those other piano players. And going to the way back machine, you have to include Little Richard, Jerry Lee Lewis and Ray Charles.
The best thing about your channel isn’t the music or the reactions, it’s you guys!! I love the vibe and chemistry you have together!! So glad your channel is doing so well
Dennis does have a very clear singing voice. He has a very distinctive, excellent tone to his voice.
Don’t Let End another great song.
Dennis De Youngs voice is like butter!!!!!❤
This came out when I was in ninth grade. Pretty much part of the soundtrack of my HS days.
If you enjoy Styx then you need to listen to Gowan. He is a Scottish-Canadian born in Glasgow and raised in Scarborough, Ontario. He was a solo artist for many years and had many hits but in 1999 he joined the group Styx as a keyboardist and lead vocalist. He is currently on tour with Styx here in Canada. One of his most famous songs is " A Criminal Mind". There are many others including 'Dancing on my Own Ground" "When there's time for love" "Moonlight Desires" "You're a Strange Animal" and many more. He is a classically trained piano player and he will often play some classical music during his concerts. I think he is well worth a listen, definitely one of my favorites.
Aww the memories. Dennis, Tommy and the guys.
This song was the theme song for my prom 1981....They also played at my highschool, when their first hit, Lady, started getting play on the radio, they were a semi local band at the time....
Paradise Theater album art is gorgeous! The record itself was beautiful with a matching central label and hologram effects pressed in the vinyl itself.
From 1976 to 1979 my favorite band was the STYX. From 1980 till I die it became the RUSH. 😀
I saw Styx 4 times live in the 80's & they never disappointed! I recommend "Suite Madam Blue" which was written in 1976 about America. "Crystal Ball" is one of my favorites. Also "Fooling Yourself" & "Grand Illusion"....so many great Styx songs!
Keep them coming!
I have the album, Paradise Theatre, which has this gorgeous song. What makes the album interesting is that it is not in black vinyl, but more of a pearl finish and when it is tilted, shows the theatre! Great reaction video🥰🥰🥰
A lot of groups in this period (1978-1983) produced music that resonates particularly well today, especially “Paradise Theater” and “Kilroy Was Here” by Styx and “Time” by ELO. There was malaise and change on the wind just like there is today. It’s no mystery that these songs hit well now.
For great pianists, I was surprised Freddie Mercury didn't immediately come to mind. :-)
I have that song to close my wedding Ceremony
Been a SYX fan since the early 80s, just love their music, even the songs/albums that are lesser known.
You're so soft-hearted, Amber. One of the things I like about you.
Some of those lyrics hit you in the feels.
With a talkbox, the player has a tube in his or her mouth. It can be hooked up to a keyboard like Roger Troutman or a guitar like Joe Walsh. There's another instrument called a vocoder which has a microphone made directly on a keyboard. You can hear vocoder on songs like "Freak A Zoid" by Midnight Star & other electrofunk tunes. It's also used by Kraftwerk. A vocoder has a more monotone robot sound than a talkbox. There's an older device called a sonovox, it was primarily used in the 1940s & 1950s. Sonovox was generally used on children's records.
His voice is so unique. It beautiful, one of the best. I don't know this song (yet)!. TY for introducing me to it. ❤🎹🎵🎼🎙

Styx is a seriously awesome band. Great vocals, great musicians, great harmony..... just awesome! Their lyrics are always amazing too! Saw them in 1978 for 5 bucks! Loved it
That song has always given me goosebumps!!! ❤❤❤❤❤❤
If you want to hear great piano please do Cat Steven’s Morning Has Broken. It gives me chills. Also an old school piano player from probably the sixties, Floyd Cramer Last Date. It’s an instrumental but very beautiful.
Ya'll would love their "Lady". Powerhouse ballad...
Another 80s band from the USSR who had one top 10 in the U.S.A was Tommy Cromwell and the Young Rumblers with "If We Never Meet Again." Trust me on this one. As a radio announcer in 1986 through 1999, that was the only song I didn't get sick of hearing every 2 hours!
My all-time favorite band. Seen them many times. Check out Crystal Ball , Castle Walls ,Man In The Wilderness or Sing For The Day. Plus some Damn Yankees Come Again.
Ty for great reaction have y’all done to much time on my hands Styx
My favorite group, grew up with them in the 70s. Please react to more Styx. Grand Illusion, Crystal Ball are 2 great ones.
Other great Styx songs are "Boat On A River", "Babe" and "Lady". Another song by Styx called "Snowblind" is sung by a different member of the band James Young.
You need to get back to the Little River Band and they have an AMAZING song called "Lady" as well, along with "Lonesome Loser", "Cool Change", "Happy Anniversary", and "The Night Owl" along with many others.
The original vinyl physical album had a hologram on it. I’ll never forget watching it spin and reading the lyrics on the liner notes.
Me too!! I can still remember it!
I absolutely love Styx and this is definitely a favorite. 💗
