Well. Not really. There was a recession, high unemployment, an intractable inflation problem that continued for years, and a general feeling of malaise and decline in America. That is what the song is addressing. Along with Dennis DeYoungs’ longstanding marriage. So nostalgia is a disguise and THESE are the best of times

I had watched a mini-series for A Tale of Two Cities and read the book just before or after hearing this song for the first time and I always associated it with the French Revolution and thought of that show, which sucked because I love the song but couldn't stop myself from associating it with decapitations (It was the Best of Times; it was the worst of times). Almost 40 years later I have something more current to associate it with -- and not as bloody.
Such a timeless song! Very unsettling how predictive it is, but an overall BEAUTIFUL message. This whole lockdown thing will either bring our spirits down, or help us become stronger than ever. I so remember this anthem as a “coming of age” young adult circa 1981. I can’t listen without a lump in my throat, and a dull ache in my chest for that most wonderful time of my life!!! ❤️🙏❤️
As of this post,I just saw the movie & looked up the song.Good movie Great song.I bought the record originally when it came out! First year of high school for me.Overall great times!!
Fantastic. Absolutely just as good as it has ever been. When we grew up in the 80s, we never thought the 80s would be anything special - looking back now it definitely was the best of times. I feel sorry for kids today, they missed the best decade ever.
I was born in ‘79 - so please forgive my opinion that most ’80’s rock is synth heavy trash. Tommy Shaw and James Young are very competent rock guitarists that I will always respect immensely, however.
A classic rock ballad from a classic rock band from an epic era of phenomenally great music. One of their very best. Some of you might even say their very best .
They were. The 90s were ok (just ok). 2001 the world went to shit and nothing has been the same since. Where is my time machine? I'd go back to 1980 in a heartbeat.
Lisa Kay 100 you are so right. The 2000's have been crap for me, I wish I could turn back time. I would go back to the 70's just to make sure I caught all of the 80's again.
So relevant today!!!! Enjoy your family!! Take advantage of this time to grow closer to your kids and rekindle your friendship with the love of your life!
I think Dennis was thinking of the future 2019-20 when he was singing this song saying these are the worst of times. With all the Gun Violence, Killings, Horrible Violent, Degrading Music (If you call " Music Sampling" Music, I don't!!) And now this Corona Virus, this World is Scary Now.The Best of Times were really back then when Styx was in their prime in the late 70's to mid 80's I wish to God I could go back again. What a Beautiful Time Period!! I Miss it.
Im with you. I was born in 1962. In the 70s and 80s we had great music. We had a simpler time. We talked to each other instead of texting. We had real friends instead of FB friends. Although I will admit You tube gets me through lots of lonely nights.
This song brings back fond memories of the best times of my life!! The 70's to mid 80's,The world was much better back then, and people were much friendlier, and music was way more fun and peaceful. Not Violent, and degrading like nowadays, I really, really wish I could go back to those days, I miss them so, Great Memories.
michael chavez What scares me is: 20 years from now will we/people be saying that about THESE times now? Flash ahead to 2040..."wow, I really miss the good old days of 2020". Okay, I'm just a glass-half-empty person I guess. I totally agree with your comment. :)

The line about people locked inside ,end of paradise, me and my wife cried, she was dying of an internal ailment,, Covid was all around, but we had the best of times. RIP Karen

This is Australia 2019, i am 56 years of age and i remember when one of my first girlfriends and were together this song was playing and it was a very exciting time in our lives, because it was of our first love, and the music was fantastic and this was the music that made our love even more comportment in these days.I still listen to music of this era, and it does not really matter from which country you are from this song is very important to you youth and be proud of it.
No tats, no piercings, no weird hair or crazy-assed stage antics. Just pure talent, plain and simple. Yes, I was there and I breathed it, lived it loved every minute of it. I wish this summer wind could bring paradise.
@@greenAbbot No background singers either. They’re excellent 3-part harmonizing leaves no need. 💕 P.S. I saw their Grand Illusion 1978 tour concert in NY and their 1981 Paradise tour concert in NY. @@catholicdad amazing they didn’t have auto tune like performers have now…. The bands from this era sound as good in concert as they do on vinyl. No one from the 90’s on can wear that badge. ❤
I have to admit, it was, the Pieces of Eight, my first concert in US. My first concert in my life and my first group that I ever saw live, in concert. What a show it was. Everything smelled like cannabis, we were young and full of life and had so much fun at the concert. No, I didn't try anything that night, but enjoyed the show, the lights and the music. What an incredible time it was, the 80s, the music and the crowd, all having fun and enjoying music together for the first time and yes, I bought my first Rock tshirt. What an amazing experience and memories.

"The Best Of Times" Tonight's the night we'll make history, honey, you and I 'Cause I'll take any risk to tie back the hands of time And stay with you here tonight I know you feel these are the worst of times I do believe it's true When people lock their doors and hide inside Rumor has it it's the end of Paradise But I know, if the world just passed us by Baby I know, I wouldn't have to cry The best of times are when I'm alone with you Some rain some shine, we'll make this a world for two Our memories of yesterday will last a lifetime We'll take the best, forget the rest And someday we'll find these are the best of times These are the best of times The headlines read 'these are the worst of times' I do believe it's true I feel so helpless like a boat against the tide I wish the summer wind could bring back Paradise But I know, if the world turned upside down Baby, I know you'd always be around The best of times are when I'm alone with you Some rain some shine, we'll make this a world for two When I'm alone with you Our memories of yesterday will last a lifetime We'll take the best, forget the rest And someday we'll find these are the best of times These are the best of times And so my friends we'll say goodnight For time has claimed it's prize But tonight will always last As long as we keep alive memories of Paradise...
Covid Song... 39 years later Dennis DeYoung was one of the biggest musical genius of the XX Century along with Lennon, Lynne, Dylan and few more... I REALLY wish the summer winds will bring back paradise to our lives, these are the worst of times, a "no-life" condition ps I Love Styx
One of the greatest memories I'll ever have was getting my allowance after doing my chores and asking my dad to take me to turtle's record store so I could get the new styx album. My dad said "sticks? Hell if you want sticks there are a bunch in back in the field".
That is similar to my mother telling me Christmas in 1978 when I opened an album I requested: "I didn't think I was going to find it, then I told the guy at Record Realm I was looking for an album with something about foreigners and eye problems" . . . They were able to figure out; I got Double Vision by Foreigner, LOL!!!!
Good old Budget Tapes & Records on Broadway. If only I could step into a time machine. Life was so wonderful back then. Late into the night listening to my new albums on a Montgomery Ward stereo with those big headphones with the coiled cord. Just the glow of the stereo in the room dreaming about my school crush.
@@sokodad same here. You just pretty much described my late elementary school and middle school years.
@Gunsandrosalina Padtwo I bet you are a delight to know.
Gunsandrosalina Padtwo 40 degrees in mid April, “cLImaTe ChAngE”
Such a timeless song! Very unsettling how predictive it is, but an overall BEAUTIFUL message. This whole lockdown thing will either bring our spirits down, or help us become stronger than ever. If you care to watch, I made a video about that... and a group of (sticks) make a fun appearance. 😄
Peace, everybody!!✌💓

The best Of Time 80's ❤
Our senior song for high school graduation 1981.
Ours for 1984❤
I think every class of 81 shared the song.
I believe that somewhere in the world, there are people who feel the same emotions that I feel when I listen to masterpieces like this song.
I so remember this anthem as a “coming of age” young adult circa 1981. I can’t listen without a lump in my throat, and a dull ache in my chest for that most wonderful time of my life!!! ❤️🙏❤️
I'm here because of "The Strangers" Chapter 1. 😁 Anyone else? 😛
As of this post,I just saw the movie & looked up the song.Good movie Great song.I bought the record originally when it came out! First year of high school for me.Overall great times!!
Me too . This song is awesome ❤😮
@@scottcatton1966 Those times (1980s) were simply the Best of Times. No pun intended.
@@Ludmilthebrony-k9x Indeed. It reminds me of elementary school.

Fantastic. Absolutely just as good as it has ever been.
When we grew up in the 80s, we never thought the 80s would be anything special - looking back now it definitely was the best of times. I feel sorry for kids today, they missed the best decade ever.
Agreed 💯, it's a shame whare we allowed the planet to become
I was in my 20's in the 80's and I feel like I knew how special it was. I'm glad I appreciated it, because it was the best decade by far.
the 80s had good moments, but styx wasnt one of them. but im not gonna talk my head off here.
1983 grad YAY! Awesome times!
60's,70', 80's are still the Best songs and groups of All Time and will remain as the Best in Memory and Heart.
Great comment and FACT❤️
The 80s were “” The Best Of Times””!!!
They were. The 90s were ok (just ok). 2001 the world went to shit and nothing has been the same since. Where is my time machine? I'd go back to 1980 in a heartbeat.
Lisa Kay 100 YESSSS❤❤❤❤
but this song was written when jimmiy carter was president
Lisa Kay 100 I agree also I feel the 70s were also
Lisa Kay 100 you are so right. The 2000's have been crap for me, I wish I could turn back time. I would go back to the 70's just to make sure I caught all of the 80's again.
So relevant today!!!! Enjoy your family!! Take advantage of this time to grow closer to your kids and rekindle your friendship with the love of your life!
Oh Mr. Dennis De Young!!! You were so right those were the best of times.!!!!!
Who else is crying to this song in October 2020?
"The headline says these are the worst of times"
When Pandora’s box was opened and pestilence was set upon us, despite the ravages of fear and despair, remained the saving grace - Hope.

As I type
It's December and I'm crying !
Going through a rough time at present and... yeah...
I think Dennis was thinking of the future 2019-20 when he was singing this song saying these are the worst of times. With all the Gun Violence, Killings, Horrible Violent, Degrading Music (If you call
" Music Sampling" Music, I don't!!) And now this Corona Virus, this World is Scary Now.The Best of Times were really back then when Styx was in their prime in the late 70's to mid 80's I wish to God I could go back again.
What happens when you ship all your good jobs to China...not to mention bringing the virus here.
I wish I was during them
👍💯
Yep I was there living every bit of it .. the 80s were the best time .. you could to literally what ever you wanted great musicians.. fantastic ladies.. 😍 .. work was easy .. the party’s where full of fun .. nothing was rally complicated
Couldn't have said it better myself. THOSE were the best of times 1976-1986
There's a video where he sings this out of his house during the coronavirus. So very appropriate.
He still sounds AMAZING!
That's actually what brought me to this video. He still sounds great 73.
Just saw it. This should be the worlds rally song.
watched it, his voice is still amazing !

The line about people locked inside ,end of paradise, me and my wife cried, she was dying of an internal ailment,, Covid was all around, but we had the best of times. RIP Karen

so sad that that concept is so ignored in today's hypersensitive media. I do believe that is a huge part of societies issues today. I LOVE STYX!
Such great memories in the early 80s. Everything was better
This is absolutely phenomenal music and lyrics and vocals - a fantastic band with an important message!
I am 13 and I love these songs my dad always played them for me and I am so grateful because this and many other songs will forever be in my memory because they got me through everything literally. I wish I was alive to witness all these songs when to band was young I went to a concert and it was great but my dad said it was always better when they were younger

Yes, absolutely 70' n 80's songs are more beautiful 😃💕
The backing vocals of this song are amazing. The best of times.
No tats, no piercings, no weird hair or crazy-assed stage antics. Just pure talent, plain and simple. Yes, I was there and I breathed it, lived it loved every minute of it. I wish this summer wind could bring paradise.
That's what love about Styx. They were just a band to perform the way it is and they still impress the audience.
Laughing at you saying “no weird hair” after watching that video.
@@greenAbbot No background singers either. They’re excellent 3-part harmonizing leaves no need. 💕 P.S. I saw their Grand Illusion 1978 tour concert in NY and their 1981 Paradise tour concert in NY. Classically trained. He tends to sing on the flat side & on long tones doesn't correct. I can buy that--good voice, hard parts--lotta jumps in this song--all well handled

"The Best Of Times"
Tonight's the night we'll make history, honey, you and I
'Cause I'll take any risk to tie back the hands of time
And stay with you here tonight
I know you feel these are the worst of times
I do believe it's true
When people lock their doors and hide inside
Rumor has it it's the end of Paradise
But I know, if the world just passed us by
Baby I know, I wouldn't have to cry
The best of times are when I'm alone with you
Some rain some shine, we'll make this a world for two
Our memories of yesterday will last a lifetime
We'll take the best, forget the rest
And someday we'll find these are the best of times
These are the best of times
The headlines read 'these are the worst of times'
I do believe it's true
I feel so helpless like a boat against the tide
I wish the summer wind could bring back Paradise
But I know, if the world turned upside down
Baby, I know you'd always be around
The best of times are when I'm alone with you
Some rain some shine, we'll make this a world for two
When I'm alone with you
Our memories of yesterday will last a lifetime
We'll take the best, forget the rest
And someday we'll find these are the best of times
These are the best of times
And so my friends we'll say goodnight
For time has claimed it's prize
But tonight will always last
As long as we keep alive memories of Paradise...
Best of times, the 80's were. Thanks for bringing it back.

ps I Love Styx
