What a great song. Not gonna lie - I was completely taken aback by the heartfelt comments here. To all of you who remember loved ones gone - one day the starship will reunite us with them. Much Love
Forty years ago when this song was popular, I was in the U.S. Navy. About this time, my ship was heading overseas for 9 months and as we moved away from the pier, waving our farewells to wives, girlfriends and friends being left behind, the bridge began to play this song over the 1MC, the public address system. It really fit the moment.
This is the song that was playing during the first memory I still have. I was in the car with my mom, only 2-3 years old, on the way home from clothes shopping at Kohls. This was on the radio. This is the first song I ever remember hearing. I haven't listened in years. It's great to have it take me back.
This was 1977....Styx .....was at the forefront Of the music scene. I can vividly Recall ....when this time came out Come sail away ....1977...I was 18. Fresh Out of high school. Yes I sail away moved From Illinois to do.calif. then...........my life Truly began! Yes I grew from a 19 yrs old Kidd to an adult.my experiences...my loves .....my mistakes....my joys....my Lows...my life truly began. With a Variety of all kinds of people!! Even The gay man that I am I still have life's Experiences. Every day. Just like any One else.
Tough memories but yer lucky to have them. Class of 1981 here also, but our prom theme was the stupid choice of "Dust in the Wind". I heard this song on the school bus every morning at the same time. Will always associate it with finishing my geometry homework on a bouncing school bus.
The piano.. Lyrics.. The voice.. The instruments. From a ballad to a rock song. One of the best songs ever. I grew up in the 70s. Come sail away with this masterpiece.
Between this, Bohemian Rhapsody and Black Parade, Im beginning to think a slow and emotional first half plus a second half that picks up the energy and goes hard af seems to be a sure fire formula for an iconic rock song.
This, Boh Rap, Freebird,Stairway are not my FAV tunes by their Artists...all have been played nauseously over the years...I’d rather listen to the tunes in their catalogs that never made the radio rotation
How are you doing? If you stumble get back up and keep going. Your life is worth fighting for. No matter how many times it takes! God will carry you through. ❤️✝️
My bus driver in middle school Mr. Leroy used to always play this every morning along with some other classics we’d always be singing along good times.
Wow, when I was in middle school, living on Sanibel Island, school was in Ft. Myers FL, middle school, bus driver played this on his stereo. 1978-1979. Another gem was Ride like the wind!

@@jaymccomb8468 Duller. But you don't want to become too jaded in life either. I guess we all try to protect ourselves from hurt but if you don't open up you cannot fully appreciate the exquisite beauty of a song like this.
I saw Styx in January at the Alabama Theater. I was 7 rows away from Lawrence. I tried so hard, but the tears just burst out. He made eye contact with me and saw me bawling. This song reminds me of my grandmother and the line "and we'll try, best that we can, to carry on" had gotten me through several suicidal episodes since she died. This band has quite literally saved my life.
Would like to know more about those dreams!
@@robintidwell1286 I'm so sorry for your loss 😢

Leaving for the navy In a month, this song brings me comfort. Wish me luck on the open seas, and may god protect and watch over my fiancé while I’m away.

i never thought in the early 80s when i listened to this on vinyl that i'd be typing a comment into a damn computer 4 decades on. we were BLESSED to be born when we were. thank you, God!!!!
I know exactly what you mean...lol...loved it then, still know all the words, even though I hadn't heard it in ages!
Honestly good point. Never looked at it that way. *:-)*
Life is truly a blessing.
As I get older, I wish more and more that I was a teen in the late 60s/early 70s instead of now. Music back then was so much better than the shit we have now.

Talk about poignant!
It doesn't get anymore kool and sad at the same time awesome song either way
I was stationed in Norfolk heading out to the Med and gulf back in 85 and this song was played when we pulled out also.
Brian Bois Gilbert that’s cool

Dennis DeYoung has the most iconic voice... a song for a generation!
Criminally underrated.
Thought it was my chemical romance or something like that when I first heard it
I agree, he and Peter Criss from Kiss my favorite drummer ever, have unique style amazing voices!!! Same 70's time frame as well!!
STYX original line up with Tommy shaw and Dennis DeYoung ,JY and the Panozzo brothers was the best.
This is the song that was playing during the first memory I still have. I was in the car with my mom, only 2-3 years old, on the way home from clothes shopping at Kohls. This was on the radio. This is the first song I ever remember hearing. I haven't listened in years. It's great to have it take me back.
Played this song for my dad in his final hours of life. It was amazing to see how he relaxed hearing this song.
He loved classic rock.

A terrible sad loss.
Tough memories but yer lucky to have them. Class of 1981 here also, but our prom theme was the stupid choice of "Dust in the Wind". I heard this song on the school bus every morning at the same time. Will always associate it with finishing my geometry homework on a bouncing school bus.

I'm sailing away
Set an open course
For the Virgin Sea
'cause I've got to be free
Free to face the life
That's ahead of me
On board I'm The Captain
So...climb aboard
We'll search for tomorrow
On every shore
And I'll try
Whoa Lord I'll try
To carry on
I look to the sea
Reflections in the waves
Spark my memory
Some happy
Some sad
I think of childhood friends
And the dreams we had
Lived happily forever
So...the story goes
But...somehow we missed out
On the pot of gold
But...we'll try
Best that we can
To carry on
A gathering of angels
Appeared above my head
They sang to me
This song of hope
And this is what they said
They said
Come Sail Away
Come Sail Away
Come and sail away with me lad
Come Sail Away
Come Sail Away
Come and Sail Away with me
Come Sail Away
Come Sail Away
Come Sail Away with me...ohh
Come Sail Away
Come Sail Away
Come Sail Away with me
I thought that they were angels
Much to my surprise
We climbed aboard their starship
We headed for the skies
Come Sail Away
Repeat forever
Of course...it was written by Dennis De Young...which always makes me think of San Francisco...where the De Young Museum is...in fact, I have a friend that works there...Hi Arie.
The Grand Illusion album from where this song comes...is nearly a masterpiece.
8 songs...39 minutes...recorded in Chicago...it was released 7-7-77.
Classic Rock critic Malcolm Dome rated the title track as Styx all-time greatest song. He also rated "Come Sail Away" as the band's 7th greatest song.

Beautifully expressed! 💖
This song was released decades before I was born, and I STILL feel the impact from it. These songs are absolutely timeless!!
You probably heard this from a movie like Detroit Rock City 1999 when you were younger, or on a car radio
you've got to remember. and have more moments.
The older I get the more appreciation and love that we were truly blessed to be alive in the Era of the 60's, 70's and 80's for music.
First concert my dad ever took me to when I was 13 years old. Styx, Kansas, and Foreigner. Saw this performed live. Absolutely incredible
Jesus, which one headlined?
I saw them, Kansas then Foreigner and then Styx at Red Rocks, Colorado years ago. What a show! Styx was the headliner.
Styx, Kansas, and Foreigner .. holy shit that must have been beyond awesome !
Those were the best times for music!
What a fucking lineup
They say that people who dream about the past can’t look forward. I disagree because there is nothing today that can compare to this. This song is timeless!
I think there are a few songs that compare, but they're rare.
We all have to carry on no matter what happens with our lives
They're wrong
Those who do not know the past have no future.
