As soon as I heard that first piano note, it was suddenly 1977 again, in grade school. I was finally happy again without all the pain of now. Thank you for taking me back to Better Days.
I agree with you, i hear this at times when we go to a covers band. This quiet guy sings at the top of his lungs with emotion. It is awesome to see others from that generation join me. It does take you to that simpler time. Much needed now.
My bus driver in middle school Mr. Leroy used to always play this every morning along with some other classics we’d always be singing along good times.
I remember this song from the spring of 1994. My mom was dying of pancreatic cancer. I was sitting in the window of my girlfriend (now wife) dorm room smoking a cigarette about to go to work for the evening shift at a shoe store in the mall. Literally the first line of the song broke me...I was sobbing. And I remember how my girlfriend consoled me, hugging me while I wept. 26 years later this song still makes me weep.
sometimes, few songs and situations are very impactful that they live with the rest of your life. still listening to some songs that I used to listen late nights remembering my crush (once girlfriend now broke up) make my heart flutter.

The Grand Illusion album from where this song comes...is nearly a masterpiece. 8 songs...39 minutes...recorded in Chicago...it was released 7-7-77. Classic Rock critic Malcolm Dome rated the title track as Styx all-time greatest song. He also rated "Come Sail Away" as the band's 7th greatest song.

These days I'm a grandma, and I STILL love these songs, brings back memories of a time when as a teen I listened to them on the radio, bought every every record they every put out, and I could sing along to forget about horrid parents, and sisters younger than me, and while they were dating,,and I was sad at home aloneI'd kisten to these songs
We are never alone for their energy is everlasting. I heard this song at least once a day while my Mom was suffering from cancer. She told me one day they were all waiting for her I asked who she everybody.
I lost my wife, heard this song and it reminds me when I was singing once this song she was ins bed and she told me ". Doud it's a nice song you are singing, what is the name of the song I replied .. " it's come sail away ." from Styx ..Now she's gone and hope she sailed away to heaven !!
Between this, Bohemian Rhapsody and Black Parade, Im beginning to think a slow and emotional first half plus a second half that picks up the energy and goes hard af seems to be a sure fire formula for an iconic rock song.
This, Boh Rap, Freebird,Stairway are not my FAV tunes by their Artists...all have been played nauseously over the years...I’d rather listen to the tunes in their catalogs that never made the radio rotation

Forty years ago when this song was popular, I was in the U.S. Navy. About this time, my ship was heading overseas for 9 months and as we moved away from the pier, waving our farewells to wives, girlfriends and friends being left behind, the bridge began to play this song over the 1MC, the public address system. It really fit the moment.

I agree with you, i hear this at times when we go to a covers band. This quiet guy sings at the top of his lungs with emotion. It is awesome to see others from that generation join me. It does take you to that simpler time. Much needed now.
Yes I feel you, I hear it and in I'm in my mother's womb playing air guitar. Best times of my life
I agree completely. I wish I was back in 1977 again so bad.
How true...
Yes my friend!! Same here!
My bus driver in middle school Mr. Leroy used to always play this every morning along with some other classics we’d always be singing along good times.
I saw this live when I was in high school. Still have my ticket stubs. Their concerts were so good! Fan for life.
I'm so sorry you had to go through that. My condolences to you. I lost my Mom too. She died of leukemia on March 10, 1994.
sometimes, few songs and situations are very impactful that they live with the rest of your life. still listening to some songs that I used to listen late nights remembering my crush (once girlfriend now broke up) make my heart flutter.
Damn. I'm just here because of "That 70's show"
Damn, sucks
God bless your mom, my mom also die from , pancreas cancer, and this give me strength to carry on man, peace dude

I'm sailing away
Set an open course
For the Virgin Sea
'cause I've got to be free
Free to face the life
That's ahead of me
On board I'm The Captain
So...climb aboard
We'll search for tomorrow
On every shore
And I'll try
Whoa Lord I'll try
To carry on
I look to the sea
Reflections in the waves
Spark my memory
Some happy
Some sad
I think of childhood friends
And the dreams we had
Lived happily forever
So...the story goes
But...somehow we missed out
On the pot of gold
But...we'll try
Best that we can
To carry on
A gathering of angels
Appeared above my head
They sang to me
This song of hope
And this is what they said
They said
Come Sail Away
Come Sail Away
Come and sail away with me lad
Come Sail Away
Come Sail Away
Come and Sail Away with me
Come Sail Away
Come Sail Away
Come Sail Away with me...ohh
Come Sail Away
Come Sail Away
Come Sail Away with me
I thought that they were angels
Much to my surprise
We climbed aboard their starship
We headed for the skies
Come Sail Away
Repeat forever
Of course...it was written by Dennis De Young...which always makes me think of San Francisco...where the De Young Museum is...in fact, I have a friend that works there...Hi Arie.
Don't lie, Eric Cartman sung this at chef aid.

This song reminds me of my father... Lost him in1999... I remember driving in a silver anniversary edition Corvette in New Orleans over the causeway listening to this when I was like 4 or 5 years old with the t-tops down life was good he was a double amputee lost both legs died at 56 years old 🗝️ he was the love of my life and he taught me about music good music what do you all know about the kinks Lola Steve Miller band 1:14 😢😢😢😢😢
I’m so sorry honey! I’m from New Orleans, my Dad taught me about music too! I also lost him 😢 been over that long causeway many many times lol I was a parish girl! XO ❤
Edit: I love Steve Miller & Bob Seger, I’m in my 50’s so the list is LONG lol
i never thought in the early 80s when i listened to this on vinyl that i'd be typing a comment into a damn computer 4 decades on. we were BLESSED to be born when we were. thank you, God!!!!
I know exactly what you mean...lol...loved it then, still know all the words, even though I hadn't heard it in ages!
Honestly good point. Never looked at it that way. *:-)*
Life is truly a blessing.
As I get older, I wish more and more that I was a teen in the late 60s/early 70s instead of now. Music back then was so much better than the shit we have now.
LMAO
My daddy would sing this song when I was growing up. He would even sing it in the truck with no music. My daddy still does after 25 years...

Your dad and I need to have some beers together. Sounds like a good fella.

A terrible sad loss.
Tough memories but yer lucky to have them. Class of 1981 here also, but our prom theme was the stupid choice of "Dust in the Wind". I heard this song on the school bus every morning at the same time. Will always associate it with finishing my geometry homework on a bouncing school bus.

I was 7 when this beautiful song came out. Now my folks are in heaven and I'm alone❤❤
I don't know you but I love you we won't be alone forever
We are never alone for their energy is everlasting. I heard this song at least once a day while my Mom was suffering from cancer. She told me one day they were all waiting for her I asked who she everybody.

This song gives me nostalgia for moments I've never experienced, which goes to show how powerful this song is.

Talk about poignant!
