@Mathew Paul basically Dennis had taken over and was just doing all his own music. More melodramatic and orchestrated. Less rock. This was kind of the epitome. After the 80s a lot of people mocked the 80s, especially for stuff like this. But now that we’re decades separated…. People can appreciate for what it is. ❤
Meanwhile myself, a 70s kid did my best to be in a foggy haze through the 80s and erase the few memories I did have from them.. 🤣 The 80s just destroyed so many things that were good..
I was there.... The 80s had some great music and videos. But... We also had some really bad ones. Tarzan Boy comes to mind. Catchy song... HORRIBLE video.
@@RVBOY2 Wow. You must have had a poor relationship with your mama she ain't never danced with you as a child. But thanks for trying to make others feel bad!
To help people that are reading, this song ( whole album, actually) tells a story! To sum it up, Mr. Roboto is about a famous rock musician named Kilroy who get thrown into prison because in the future America is a dystopia run by fascist tyrants, who outlaw and ban music. This was bad news for Kilroy, because this meant he was to be thrown into prison. Honestly I'm sure there is more to this story but thats the overgeneralised plot. The prison is completely run by, well, robots. Kilroy, (Little fun fact about the album, the title is called "Kilroy Was Here" which in this case has two meanings. One meaning is the reference to one of the first ever "memes" It was used back in the 1940's by soldiers of WWII. The other meaning is of course, referring to our protagonist of this rock opera, Kilroy.) Kilroy knocks out a robot guard when it enters his prison cell, and disguises himself inside the robot. (Hence "Somewhere to hide") Then he manages to escape prison in the suit. Thats why he keeps saying "Thank you" over and over. Thats the story of Mr. Roboto. Its not the whole Kilroy Was Here album, but its a piece of it.
Whenever someone says "Domo Arigato," I think of this song. I ain't gonna last a minute in Japan. Edit: one of my rival marching bands had their show be a tribute to Styx, with this as their 1st Mvt.
ummm actually No... I was 8 years old when this came out and even then I got the gist -- "the problems plain to see - too much technology - machines to save our lives - machines dehumanize". Its plainly a cautionary tale, warning of letting robots or AI have too much control
As this song says "The problem's plain to see. Too Much technology. Machines to save our lives. Machines dehumanize". It's incredible how this verse has too much importance now.
Um. Like holy shit. I was born in the seventies and love this shit. My son was over tonight with his bass guitar playing this, and it made we wanna revisit the past, so I looked this up...... somehow I'VE LISTENED TO THIS SONG MY WHOLE LIFE, but never truly LISTENED.......This comment of yours should be viral. How have I listened to this from fourth grade through my fucking fifties living in the hell scape that is AI and social media, seeing where it's going, seeing that our IDs have no earthly idea what life was like before the screen ruled the world
Whoever wrote the lyrics was ahead of their time in the 1980s - AI & Elon Musk were not trying to rule the world yet- It’s 2024 & our humanity is being threatened by AI + EM s neurolink putting chips in our brains to “upgrade humans” “save our lives?” By “machines dehumanizing “ Machines & chips in head really designed “To keep us alive?” “Forget what you know”
@mamacitabella1759 yea there's a quote about enjoying the music when you're happy, but understanding the lyrics when your sad. Not the same thing, but it makes you think about how much great lyricism is overlooked by the masses because we're too busy consuming everything in site shallowly/superficially
Good one... Even China uses Northern Korean Slave Labor.. Chinese raise their noses in the air, we are now too good to bother making this consumer garbage for export..
@Jesse Hoffman A lot of people think transhumanist talk is a "conspiracy theory". Bravo. I still don't see many folks on social media ever go anywhere near that topic.
That's funny because when I was this age my dad played this song one time and for some reason I fell in love with it as well :D I guess there is something in it that is really interesting to kids. May your child be happy and healthy.
It doesn't end for me, I started singing the lyrics to "Cold War" right on cue. As controversial as the album and the tour were, Dennis DeYoung wrote a futuristic if not timeless story and in doing so broke up the band lol so clearly it's art. If they're not in "Rock and Roll Hall of Fame" then I dispute there is such a thing.
It's also hard to believe that Mr. Roboto proved eerily prophetic. The song literally thrust us all into this dystopian, almost futuristic cyberpunk science fiction world.
Not when you were a teen in the 80s. Most of the songs that I'm familiar with are from the 80s, other than "Weird Al" songs, and of course some of those are from the 80s.

Music videos in the 1980s were awesome. They didn't have the technology we have today to make everything look super clean and perfect but they were a lot more creative, they did a lot more with what they had and they usually told a story, they were like short movies.
They had to be awesome. These were the heydays of MTV and everybody watched MTV all day. When artists recorded songs and wanted them to be successful they had to stand out in order to get attention.
When u don't have enough resources, then u think out of the box and that's what called is creativity. There were not enough resources, but there were brains to use unlike today's generation who got a fixed mindset.
Brave New World was their last album together. The turmoil of filming Kilroy Was Here tore the band apart. Dennis also suffered a medical condition back then preventing him from touring. Lawrence Gowan was a formidable replacement for both vocals and his piano style plus he proved himself when he fronted the Brave New World tour instead of Dennis.

@@wallegg1499 Songs can be a personal thing. My interpretation can be different than yours. "Thank you Mr. Roboto for doing my job" spoke to me me in a special way. Not everyone has talent to be a programmer.
The song tells part of the story of Robert Orin Charles Kilroy (ROCK), in the rock opera Kilroy Was Here. The song is performed by Kilroy (as played by keyboardist Dennis DeYoung), a rock and roll performer who was placed in a futuristic prison for "rock and roll misfits" by the anti-rock-and-roll group the Majority for Musical Morality (MMM) and its founder Dr. Everett Righteous (played by guitarist James Young). The Roboto is a model of robot which does menial jobs in the prison. Kilroy escapes the prison by overpowering a Roboto prison guard and hiding inside its emptied-out metal shell. When Jonathan Chance (played by guitarist Tommy Shaw) finally meets Kilroy, at the very end of the song, Kilroy unmasks and says "I'm Kilroy! Kilroy!", ending the song.

Wow ! Thanks for explaining dude :)

Very well worded Sir !
As this song says "The problem's plain to see. Too Much technology. Machines to save our lives. Machines dehumanize". It's incredible how this verse has too much importance now.
"Too much technology" is a bold claim for a synthesizer band to make.

They had to be awesome. These were the heydays of MTV and everybody watched MTV all day. When artists recorded songs and wanted them to be successful they had to stand out in order to get attention.
When u don't have enough resources, then u think out of the box and that's what called is creativity.

OK, but that still doesn't explain why Kilroy was apparently able to knock the wind out of a robot (2:33). ;)
he jolted the circuits i guess.
