That's funny because when I was this age my dad played this song one time and for some reason I fell in love with it as well :D I guess there is something in it that is really interesting to kids. May your child be happy and healthy.
I'll never forget a Star Trek convention in Portland back in' 97 this song was played as a video tribute featuring the best of Mr.Data.The place went crazy.
_"The problem's plain to see... Too much technology! Machines to rule our lives... Machines dehumanize!"_ That one verse is the whole meaning behind the entire album and story!
I like how the song is 100% synth until he says that line and then it switches to analog instruments that are so processed that you can hardly recognize them as natural. It's genius.
@Mathew Paul basically Dennis had taken over and was just doing all his own music. More melodramatic and orchestrated. Less rock. This was kind of the epitome. After the 80s a lot of people mocked the 80s, especially for stuff like this. But now that we’re decades separated…. People can appreciate for what it is. ❤
To help people that are reading, this song ( whole album, actually) tells a story! To sum it up, Mr. Roboto is about a famous rock musician named Kilroy who get thrown into prison because in the future America is a dystopia run by fascist tyrants, who outlaw and ban music. This was bad news for Kilroy, because this meant he was to be thrown into prison. Honestly I'm sure there is more to this story but thats the overgeneralised plot. The prison is completely run by, well, robots. Kilroy, (Little fun fact about the album, the title is called "Kilroy Was Here" which in this case has two meanings. One meaning is the reference to one of the first ever "memes" It was used back in the 1940's by soldiers of WWII. The other meaning is of course, referring to our protagonist of this rock opera, Kilroy.) Kilroy knocks out a robot guard when it enters his prison cell, and disguises himself inside the robot. (Hence "Somewhere to hide") Then he manages to escape prison in the suit. Thats why he keeps saying "Thank you" over and over. Thats the story of Mr. Roboto. Its not the whole Kilroy Was Here album, but its a piece of it.
As this song says "The problem's plain to see. Too Much technology. Machines to save our lives. Machines dehumanize". It's incredible how this verse has too much importance now.
Um. Like holy shit. I was born in the seventies and love this shit. My son was over tonight with his bass guitar playing this, and it made we wanna revisit the past, so I looked this up...... somehow I'VE LISTENED TO THIS SONG MY WHOLE LIFE, but never truly LISTENED.......This comment of yours should be viral. How have I listened to this from fourth grade through my fucking fifties living in the hell scape that is AI and social media, seeing where it's going, seeing that our IDs have no earthly idea what life was like before the screen ruled the world
Whoever wrote the lyrics was ahead of their time in the 1980s - AI & Elon Musk were not trying to rule the world yet- It’s 2024 & our humanity is being threatened by AI + EM s neurolink putting chips in our brains to “upgrade humans” “save our lives?” By “machines dehumanizing “ Machines & chips in head really designed “To keep us alive?” “Forget what you know”
@mamacitabella1759 yea there's a quote about enjoying the music when you're happy, but understanding the lyrics when your sad. Not the same thing, but it makes you think about how much great lyricism is overlooked by the masses because we're too busy consuming everything in site shallowly/superficially
Occasionally, a great rock band will veer off into uncharted territory, take risks, and make something that is really weird and really amazing. This entire album from Styx was one of those occasions. We didn't know what the heck we were hearing, but we knew it was awesome.
Look forward to the days of sharing such memories with your kids cause this gem gotta get fucking shared FORFUCKING EVERRRRRRRRRRRRRBDOMOOOOOOOOOOYOOOOOOWAAAAAAAAAA
Man has been using technology since the dawn of time. Computers are culimonation of many different scientific fields and hundreds of years of advancement. So to complain that we have too much technology is just, well, not very specific or interesting and comes from the mind of a layman with no appreciation for scientific thought. The actual problem is we have too many humans.

It's also hard to believe that Mr. Roboto proved eerily prophetic. The song literally thrust us all into this dystopian, almost futuristic cyberpunk science fiction world.
Not when you were a teen in the 80s. Most of the songs that I'm familiar with are from the 80s, other than "Weird Al" songs, and of course some of those are from the 80s.
Some of the best music ever came from roughly 76-77 to 83-84. Devo, Styx, the Cars, The Police, Frankie goes to Hollywood, Gleaming Spires, Men at Work, and hell, I'll even give Adam Ant an honorable mention 😀

Mario Gomez; Thanks for providing the lyrics. I've listened to this song for years and there just a few words I didn't always get. This guys voice is incredible, have always loved it!
Music videos in the 1980s were awesome. They didn't have the technology we have today to make everything look super clean and perfect but they were a lot more creative, they did a lot more with what they had and they usually told a story, they were like short movies.
They had to be awesome. These were the heydays of MTV and everybody watched MTV all day. When artists recorded songs and wanted them to be successful they had to stand out in order to get attention.
When u don't have enough resources, then u think out of the box and that's what called is creativity. There were not enough resources, but there were brains to use unlike today's generation who got a fixed mindset.
They created this album as a rock opera. It was a warning about the supression of the freedom of speech and expression. Each song was a continuation of the story. Pretty awesome in my book. Loved the 80s!
Especially the song Heavy Metal Poisoning. I'm a metal gal headbanger and I loved the message the song was trying to convey about censorship. The video was cool as hell, too if anybody wants to check that out.
This '80's song talks of technology taking over humanity and transforming everything into a souless dystopian land. We are well on the way sports fans....

Meanwhile myself, a 70s kid did my best to be in a foggy haze through the 80s and erase the few memories I did have from them.. 🤣 The 80s just destroyed so many things that were good..
I was there.... The 80s had some great music and videos. But... We also had some really bad ones. Tarzan Boy comes to mind. Catchy song... HORRIBLE video.
They are genius. See them in concert, with Loverboy and R-E-O. Just did. Broke me, not paid for my comment - just a 30 ish year old with tales from my father. R-E-O ditch the wig, so bad. IMO Styx just pushed their way into my top 5 bands of all time. Avengenge 7 fold, after seeing Disturbed and System of a Down fail. Same theater mind you, prefer the grass area. Avenenge 7n fold did way better than either, and even better than Ozy. Korn and dude with a missing rib are also in my top 5 due to failed Oz fests (not to confuse him with a woman that probably had two xx and one y chromosone - something you probably didn't know about her - Yeah Marilon Monroe was 2/3rds man and 1/3rd woman - look it up. actually find it funny that the "woman" figure of history was more man than woman - so look it up.). Saw Styx from the seats though, hate that. Been in front two rows for Carrie three times. But at whitewater, rather be on the grass. Even if the cheap seats, better. Carrie, was the most talented artist I had ever seen - until saw Styx in person. 70 year olds should never move that way, but so happy I saw them do so against all odds. Best band I have ever seen in person, thank them for that. I will die knowing I saw something I never should have. Bands today, are not the bands of yesteryear. and that is bad to say, but also great. Styx did something not even bands today can do.
That can be said about every 80s band that we cling on for emotional support because we are all still little kids on the inside holding on to that feeling we got when we first heard these songs.
what a masterpiece! wow! i have never ever heard this song or seen it until today! my jaw is still on the floor! wow just wow! this is my new favorite song! how did i miss this mini-operatic piece of brilliance!?

I get this hook stuck in my head all the time. This is the first time I sat down to really listen to this song. And I have to say there are a lot of layers to it.
It's so fucking perfect. Like the lyrics are just a perfect match. And, at the end when he is saying "Thank you for helping me escape when I needed to. Thank you, thank you!" He's thanking 4 entities. Just like in Mr. Robot, the father the mother, the kid, and the mastermind. They helped him escape.

An absolutely prophetic song from 1983 where it tells us about the prominence of robots and artificial intelligence... they saw the future 40 years from now, how great! ... Greetings from 2023 Chiclayo-Peru
Heck yea it is! I remember this one as a kid. I was a science fiction geek and still am, but realize it's not fiction like Elon Musk recently stated. Where did all this knowledge come from that created the 21st century future arriving? We didn't actually realistically expect to see high tech AI driven robots in the real world like we're beginning to see. The first driverless robo taxi without operator controls is set to be announced on August 8th this year. Elon Musk is the super star CEO of all time, but not sure if gonna save America and keep the world a human one that represents the will of the people for it's a global corporation that oversees all the companies, universities, countries, and everyone who was blessed to have great jobs. For the rest of us who speak truth instead of going along with whatever plan, there's not this greatest country we thought was our country for it's the global corporation of WEF.
Brave New World was their last album together. The turmoil of filming Kilroy Was Here tore the band apart. Dennis also suffered a medical condition back then preventing him from touring. Lawrence Gowan was a formidable replacement for both vocals and his piano style plus he proved himself when he fronted the Brave New World tour instead of Dennis.

I always thought it was their best song. It has that new wave sound of the 80s, it is catchy and the lyrics were prophetic with its warnings about the dangers of technology and how it can dehumanize people which is what is literally happening now. I think what broke up the band was DYoung's insistence on having a Rock Opera concert tour and the other band members thought it was dumb.

The song tells part of the story of Robert Orin Charles Kilroy (ROCK), in the rock opera Kilroy Was Here. The song is performed by Kilroy (as played by keyboardist Dennis DeYoung), a rock and roll performer who was placed in a futuristic prison for "rock and roll misfits" by the anti-rock-and-roll group the Majority for Musical Morality (MMM) and its founder Dr. Everett Righteous (played by guitarist James Young). The Roboto is a model of robot which does menial jobs in the prison. Kilroy escapes the prison by overpowering a Roboto prison guard and hiding inside its emptied-out metal shell. When Jonathan Chance (played by guitarist Tommy Shaw) finally meets Kilroy, at the very end of the song, Kilroy unmasks and says "I'm Kilroy! Kilroy!", ending the song.

_"The problem's plain to see... Too much technology! Machines to rule our lives... Machines dehumanize!"_ That one verse is the whole meaning behind the entire album and story!
And the real troubles we go through even to this day because of our electronic devices.
That one line says everything about our lives today
I like how the song is 100% synth until he says that line and then it switches to analog instruments that are so processed that you can hardly recognize them as natural. It's genius.
Says the guy using the machine to listen and shit type lol
He said machines to SAVE our lives but message still the same

@@Eeveecharm Saw Styx twice in late 70's early 80's with Dennis. Really good shows. Dennis has such a distinct voice and style.
@@Eeveecharm They only started playing Mr. R. in shows after Dennis started doing it with his copy band.
Never heard this before. This is quite a gem
Wow ! Thanks for explaining dude :)

As this song says "The problem's plain to see. Too Much technology. Machines to save our lives. Machines dehumanize". It's incredible how this verse has too much importance now.
"Too much technology" is a bold claim for a synthesizer band to make.
Um. Like holy shit. I was born in the seventies and love this shit. You can take that to the bank!!! 😕
Whoever wrote the lyrics was ahead of their time in the 1980s -
AI & Elon Musk were not trying to rule the world yet-
It’s 2024 & our humanity is being threatened by AI + EM s neurolink putting chips in our brains to “upgrade humans” “save our lives?” By “machines dehumanizing “
Machines & chips in head really designed “To keep us alive?”
“Forget what you know”
@mamacitabella1759 yea there's a quote about enjoying the music when you're happy, but understanding the lyrics when your sad. it's a good song but let's be honest with ourselves.
Occasionally, a great rock band will veer off into uncharted territory, take risks, and make something that is really weird and really amazing. This entire album from Styx was one of those occasions. We didn't know what the heck we were hearing, but we knew it was awesome.
Great, insightful comment!
I think George Michael’s Freedom 90 is like that. He took a lot of chances musically and boldly not being in the music video.

Man has been using technology since the dawn of time. Computers are culimonation of many different scientific fields and hundreds of years of advancement. So to complain that we have too much technology is just, well, not very specific or interesting and comes from the mind of a layman with no appreciation for scientific thought.

I am the modren man
I've got a secret, I've been hiding under my skin
My heart is human, my blood is boiling
My brain I.B.M., so if you see me
Acting strangely, don't be surprised
I'm just a man who needed someone
And somewhere to hide
To keep me alive, just keep me alive
Somewhere to hide to keep me alive
I'm not a robot without emotions
I'm not what you see
I've come to help you
With your problems, so we can be free
I'm not a hero, I'm not a saviour
Forget what you know
I'm just a man whose circumstances
Went beyond his control
Beyond my control, we all need control
I need control, we all need control
I am the modren man
(Secret, secret I've got a secret)
Who hides behind a mask
(Secret, secret, I've got a secret)
So no one else can see
(Secret, secret, I've got a secret)

Domo Arigato, Mr. Roboto
Domo Arigato, Mr. Roboto
Domo Arigato, Mr. Roboto
Domo Arigato, Mr. Roboto
Thank you very much, Mr. Roboto
For doing the jobs that nobody wants to
And thank you very much, Mr. Roboto
For helping me escape
Just when I needed to
Thank you, thank you, thank you
I want to thank you
Please, thank you, oh
The problem's plain to see
Too much technology
Machines to save our lives
Machines, de-humanize
The time has come at last
(Secret, secret, I've got a secret)
To throw away this mask
(Secret, secret, I've got a secret)
Now everyone can see

"Dōmo arigatō misutā robotto, Mata au hi made, Himitsu o shiritai" Literally translates to: "Thank you very much, Mr. Robot. Until the day we meet again, I want to know your secret." This literally explains the entirety of the ending of Mr. Robot. Fantastic use of this song sam.

Hi I recommend a song called 'The Bond Villain' By Robert Nix
rest in peace
Who cares?
I’m so sorry. 😢
sorry for your loss, that's far too young. Lost my dad too *hugs*
Remember when music videos were good and memorable? I would say that I miss the 80s, but I was too young to remember them.
Meanwhile myself, a 70s kid did my best to be in a foggy haze through the 80s and erase the few memories I did have from them.. 🤣
The 80s just destroyed so many things that were good..
"don't waste your time always searching for those wasted years..."
The 80's, the decade for unreal talent and music. Memories....
@Cyraxior: Me too I was born in 84.
I was there.... The 80s had some great music and videos. But... We also had some really bad ones. Tarzan Boy comes to mind. Catchy song... HORRIBLE video.
Nobody can produce a song like this anymore, these guys were geniuses. Awesome
As you know this was the reason for Styx to break after 1983. I wonder why.
Theres a band that makes music that sounds like this song called, The Cars
@@HambergurHelperEeter The cars really? Styx is/was much better the cars really?

It really was when this one came out,,
and a reality today.
I get this hook stuck in my head all the time. This is the first time I sat down to really listen to this song. And I have to say there are a lot of layers to it.
No there isn't, it's just weird
It's so fucking perfect. Like the lyrics are just a perfect match. And, at the end when he is saying "Thank you for helping me escape when I needed to. Thank you, thank you!" He's thanking 4 entities. Just like in Mr. Robot, the father the mother, the kid, and the mastermind. They helped him escape.

An absolutely prophetic song from 1983 where it tells us about the prominence of robots and artificial intelligence... they saw the future 40 years from now, how great! ... Greetings from 2023 Chiclayo-Peru
Greetings from the USA 2024

3:03 will always be my favorite part of this song, I used to rewind my CD player non stop for that part
This song is SO freaking relevant in 2023!!! Dennis DeYoung was way ahead of his time.
What, the opening to an album about a future where a rock star has to save the world? I don't see it
Yes he was. After this song from my understanding he left the band or had to leave

OK, but that still doesn't explain why Kilroy was apparently able to knock the wind out of a robot (2:33). ;)
