Thank you sir Schilling for this gem of music. I knew this song on my vacation 1983 in Brazil at a pub where I was there and this tune made me blow my mind.
As a marine I was walking across a parade deck in front of the chow hall on a weekend in 29 palms California and I heard the chorus “4,3.2,1....” over the loudspeakers. The high tone echoed off the buildings and I instantly loved this song. It sounded surreal. Today the chorus gives me chills and brings me back to this walk across the base.

I was driving my family home when the son heard this song on my radio and was stricken by it. The father told him how famous it was back in the 80s! Great day to be a car.
The punk scene in the 80s in Germany was amazing. So much great music came out of that scene. Probably the last great decade for music. This is my all time favorite song. Its got a great beat and the lyrics and story they tell are literally out of this world. An astronaut lost in space. Drifting endlessly forever. Alive inside yet dead to the world. Such a great life metaphor for how many people feel. Drifting aimlessly. Alive inside. But eternally ignored by society.
It's 2024 and my teenage son brought me here. He heard 4 seconds of this song on some radio ad and was driven to know this song. He said their voices are pitch perfect. All I could tell him was "Son - that was a hit song from my time" - but I found it - evidence enough that 80s music is here to stay.

I'm the same. Once I listen to this song I pretty much have to go without music for awhile. It's very "ethereal," if you will. It's also melancholy. I think what is hardest for me is how the wife responds to Major Tom's demise: she's in the arms of another man. That wrecks me and not in a good way. I think the idea of my wife in another man's arms while I'm away is a torture too insufferably indescribable to utter. An agony better suited for hell than earth. Then I wonder if Major Tom put his career before her and it drove her into another's arms. Then I wonder if it was just the music video director's cynical view of love.

Timeless. This could hit the top 10 again today and be relevant as it was when released. The world after Covid is begging for peace and freedom's and more relationships than the internet. The closeness of family and friends. We need hope not chaos. Love to all. Keep dancing.
1980s was one of the greatest errors, and now Generation X gets to see it all go down. I was 18 yrs old in 1985 , and it's pretty sad to see what has happened with music and everything else that's going on.
My sister recorded this on Friday Night Videos in '84. I was six, and of course my German born mom liked this song-who bought the album. I loved the shots of rockets, space, even my boomer Dad liked this video because he was interested in it also. We had rough times as a farm family during the 80's but we had lots of good times also.

I am from Madrid and I have just returned after many days in Germany, where I was watching matches of my national team for Euro 2024 I am 36 years old and this is the fourth time I have visited Germany (the first time was in 2006, another unforgettable summer for football lovers) That trip in 2006 was incredible, I was 18 years old, and thanks to some songs I managed to relive that trip to Germany with my friends, and I felt very nostalgic. Even songs in German, even if I didn't understand the lyrics. 18 years later, this song will help me not to forget another incredible summer in Germany. It is a wonderful country and every time I go I enjoy it a lot. You Germans always organize these types of events well, and also a country with a huge football tradition. In Spain we respect you a lot 👏🏻👏🏻
26 year old Spanish fan here - first ever international tournament for me, and what an incredible experience it has been. I was at the Germany-Spain game in Stuttgart, and I was euphoric for the win obviously, but still sad to see this fantastic host nation out of the tournament. I was happy to see so many German fans wearing the shirt on the following day. I didn't find out about the name of this song until then, and now it captures what I feel is so special about national team football - a whole country united behind a team, wanting to enjoy football, music (the joy of singing unofficial anthems like this one), summer, beer, and having a good time with football as the uniting passion. The daydreaming and hopeful feeling while your team is still in the fight, and the "what could have been" feeling when knocked out of the tournament. in the end that's what makes national team football so special in my opinion. thank you EURO 2024, regardless of what happens tomorrow in Spain v France, I will never forget this tournament.
1983, perhaps the best year out of the 80s for iconic 80s new wave music. Such an iconic early 80s new wave classic. Timeless masterpiece. It makes me sad, happy, nostalgic, and wanting to sing at the top of my lungs. I just turned 57...
I once heard this song, and for a entire year I tried to find out his name (but because I listened the german version, I didn't know the lyrics) but a few days ago my ex boyfriend played it out on RUclips, so yes, it's a song pretty hard to find

Today's date is 4/3/21, and I guess you could say I've been waiting my whole life for it 🙃 4, 3, 2, 1 Earth below us Drifting, falling Floating weightless Calling, calling home...
I generally do not read youtube comments but this one took of particular interest. A lot of what you stated is correct but not quite. As far as the whole 2012 Ancient Mayan Doomsday prophecy, it is actually very much set in stone as one of the greatest serendipities that is yet to conquer the whole world or "macrocosm" as we all know. There have been many other prophets from around the globe supporting this prophecy not just the ancient Mayans. All that being said apparently it was miscalculated according to the date. Supposedly December 21st 2012 was going to ignite the end of times bringing on catastrophic destructions such as natural earth disasters, etc. Not only that rumor has it that a giant dragon is supposed to arise out of the Ocean somewhere spitting fireballs all over the earth. All that being said , guess what ? It was a slight miscalculation with the year.... that's right, it did not happen in Dec 2012 but reverse that so they say and that means that it is really bound to happen this year.... 2021. Reverse the 12 it's obviously a 21. So that being said come the date of December 21st 2021 we are all going to be in for something extremely serious.
It happens something strange to me... Whenever I m reading Comments then it comes the exact part of the video That I m listening...in this case the 4,3,2,1🤔🙄🎶
Standing there alone The ship is waiting All systems are go "Are you sure?" Control is not convinced But the computer Has the evidence No need to abort The countdown starts Watching in a trance The crew is certain Nothing left to chance All is working Trying to relax Up in the capsule "Send me up a drink." Jokes Major Tom The count goes on... 4, 3, 2, 1 Earth below us Drifting, falling Floating weightless Calling, calling home... Second stage is cut We're now in orbit Stabilizers up Runnning perfect Starting to collect Requested data "What will it affect When all is done?" Thinks Major Tom Back at ground control There is a problem "Go to rockets full." Not responding "Hello Major Tom Are you receiving? Turn the thrusters on We're standing by." There's no reply 4, 3, 2, 1 Earth below us Drifting, falling Floating weightless Calling, calling home... Across the stratosphere A final message: "Give my wife my love." Then nothing more Far beneath the ship The world is mourning They don't realize He's alive No one understands But Major Tom sees "Now the light commands This is my home I'm coming home." Earth below us Drifting, falling Floating weightless Coming home... Earth below us Drifting, falling Floating weightless Coming, coming Home Home
Peter Schilling hit a home run with this classic. Still evergreen today.
This has always been one of my favorite songs. It inspires sadness, loneliness and hope. It's just so perfect.

@@marketmail49 That's awesome! My Daughter moved back there in 2010. She married a very nice German guy who is a mechanic, and a Volunteer Firefighter. Also, he is big into soccer. But then again you can compare that to us here liking our football or baseball. I loved it over there!
You should watch deutschland 83

Life is crazy. I heard this song in Old Navy when I was like 7-8 and had no idea what the hell he was saying. I’m 25 now and listened to this song today!!!!
I’m so shocked and don’t have words. So much talent and respect for this artist 🙏
There is something about music from this time that just hits different than today and it's a good thing
Listening to the hook during midnight watching the stars makes me feel like I can achieve anything and make every dream reality.

Well said 🤗
I wish I could watch those stars with you, I feel the EXACT same way. I sometimes listen to this and look at the stars from my little apartment window in the city.
I love this comment
Wanted to make a dumb joke, but yeah we're all looking at that same beautiful night sky.
Timeless. This could hit the top 10 again today and be relevant as it was when released. The world after Covid is begging for peace and freedom's and more relationships than the internet. The closeness of family and friends. We need hope not chaos. Love to all. Keep dancing.
Those of us who were youth in the 80s were BLESSED
Sim somos abençoados por ter curtido essa inesquecível era!
1980s was one of the greatest errors, and now Generation X gets to see it all go down. I was 18 yrs old in 1985 , and it's pretty sad to see what has happened with music and everything else that's going on.
Yes, we were! 80s were so awesome! I feel sorry for the youth today.
couldn't agree more! Nothing but opportunities and fun!

Whose here lucky enough to hear this in the 80's? Songs from that decade are just like this song...out of this world.
I was in high school when this was released.
I was in the sccoll.... I was 17 yeard old....
I’m grateful for Umbrella Academy for introducing me to this song 🙌🏼😍 (Wasn’t born til the 90’s)
I was 13 when it came out
It was on the radio of course, but the only specific time I remember is watching this on "Friday Night Videos".
Massively underrated. Such a great song
I'm 35 years old, it's the first time I've heard this song, incredible.
Yo tengo 26 años y la escucho desde niña
Now listen to Space Oddity from David Bowie which is the song that inspired this german singer.
Y ya escuchaste Space Oddity de David Bowie? fué la canción que inspiró a este cantante alemán.@@valeriavb8133
I'm 43, and heard it in snippets in the past, but could never catch who it was etc. Captured it today via a link!
Just keep listening to the classics!
This reminds me when MTV and VH1 used to play great music videos
Me too. I guess that shows how old we are 😎
I always lamented not being able to see that.

4,3,2,1 :56 is just timeless, I love metal but I appreciate all genres. This is one of my favorite songs, even with the heavy music I listen to. I can appreciate good music in any form.
Same, metal is my main genre but I love pop, folk and classical too.
I remember listening to this with my dad cruising down the road at night good memories when I was a lil girl hanging out with my dad he introduced me,to so many different genres of music
His soul drips into the chorus. More magical is, you're soaked into it too.
Yup, this song just draws you in and engulfs you. Its Totally absorbing.
Such a nostalgic song. Everytime I hear this song, it brings me back to those happy times.

I am from Madrid and I have just returned after many days in Germany, where I was watching matches of my national team for Euro 2024
I am 36 years old and this is the fourth time I have visited Germany (the first time was in 2006, another unforgettable summer for football lovers)
That trip in 2006 was incredible, I was 18 years old, and thanks to some songs I managed to relive that trip to Germany with my friends, and I felt very nostalgic.

Dont be sad to be 57, I listen to new wave every day and try to get into the vibe that was it in the 80s
I get this 100% because I was a new wave punk in the 80's. 54 now! LOL
I will never get bored of this song. ever.
Me neither!👍🏻🎇🌌🌃

I think the only reason this video doesn’t have more views is due to people likely not knowing the name of this song
the german original was more popular and up in the charts for an insane long time
@@zoolkhan what is the name for the german version?
@@lummx Also Major Tom. Nothing much to translate with the title, major is also major in German.

I once heard this song, and for a entire year I tried to find out his name (but because I listened the german version, I didn't know the lyrics) but a few days ago my ex boyfriend played it out on RUclips, so yes, it's a song pretty hard to find
La escuche en una película y no me acordaba ni de Peter Schilling ni de Major Tom...la busqué a lo tonto como "Four Three ..." y me salió de primera...Que grande los 80's y 90's y que grande Peter
that chorus is amazing
I love how it begins sounding spooky and the chorus is happy. I love songs that have emotions like this.
The dreamy futuristic 80s vibes I am getting from this song are the best.

Standing there alone
The ship is waiting
All systems are go
"Are you sure?"
Control is not convinced
But the computer
Has the evidence
No need to abort
The countdown starts
Watching in a trance
The crew is certain
Nothing left to chance
All is working
Trying to relax
Up in the capsule
"Send me up a drink."
Jokes Major Tom
The count goes on...
4, 3, 2, 1
Earth below us
Drifting, falling
Floating weightless
Calling, calling home...
Second stage is cut
We're now in orbit
Stabilizers up
Runnning perfect
Starting to collect
Requested data
"What will it affect
When all is done?"
Thinks Major Tom
Back at ground control
There is a problem
"Go to rockets full."
Not responding
"Hello Major Tom
Are you receiving?
Turn the thrusters on
We're standing by."
There's no reply
4, 3, 2, 1
Earth below us
Drifting, falling
Floating weightless
Calling, calling home...
Across the stratosphere
A final message:
"Give my wife my love."
Then nothing more
Far beneath the ship
The world is mourning
They don't realize
He's alive
No one understands
But Major Tom sees
"Now the light commands
This is my home
I'm coming home."
Earth below us
Drifting, falling
Floating weightless
Coming home...
Earth below us
Drifting, falling
Floating weightless
Coming, coming
Home
