So fucking true I get that so much. It's called precognitive nostalgia. Some believe it's from past lives. Some think it's the brain knowing one day the memory will happen and it becomes excited for the memory. Very common in sensitive or depressed people who don't have currently happy lives, so they hope that their future will be better. Hi, I'm Jack. And I'm too interested in my own psychology. Good day.
@Harry Johnston-Smith Specific strategy. The comments are made purposefully idiotic and fake-looking so only the most vulnerable would go through with it. That makes the rest of the scam easier and filters out those who would drop out of the scam halfway through and waste the scammers time.
I once upon a time was one of these men. I got out of the marines in Sept 71 and people really didn't like us Vietnam veterans too well. For 10 years I worked during the day and closed the bars at night and then one day this lovely woman walked into my life. I've loved her ever since. Within 3 months of our first date we were engaged and 9 months after our first date we were married. We have been happily married since Sept 3, 1981. For some time she would when we went to bed have to listen to my rants about the war and coming home. After a while when I calmed down she would kiss me and hold me. I guess I had PTSD and just didn't know it. Now she is in a nursing home with dementia and MS. I see her every day but I miss her so much.
It's not about how 'Life sucks, but what can you do?' It's more about how 'Life isn't always what you want it to be, but it's up to you what to do with it. So do your best and be happy, whatever it may be.'

somehow youtube just started playing this song .... damn I am blown away !!! so many different styles and vocals ... a story to tell! I am so overwhelmed! amazing song
I mean there's a reason the piano is usually used for the accompanying music. Piano music is soft and stable, but it doesn't blare like a trumpet or harmonica.
He's fantastic! I just got out of the shower and this song said sing me 😄 I gave it my best and it brought me so much joy 👍 Thank you for sharing your immense talents Billy Joel ♥️
Yeah-The Hoplesness of it all. Saddest part in Interviews hes given about the song, he says this was actuall peopole he knew when he played in a Piano Bar. Somehow that just hits harder.
This is one of the best songs ever written, it’s a punch to the gut to the melancholy music. With the music sounding light and bright it’s a nice balance of life. No one will see this comment, but if they do, thank you and have a nice life, cheers. Edit: there was a typo. nothing was added or removed
this was my dad's favourite song when he was in the hospital, unable to move, still recovering from his coma He LOVES this song, and now I can say proudly that my dad can now walk and always has a smile on his face
Poetic We all have people in our lives that resonate with this song, including ourselves. A masterpiece and such memories. Takes me back to bars and pubs in Preston.Happy times.
I was so fortunate to get to see him second row in concert in the early2000s.He sounded just like his albums, didn't need anything to make him sound good.Sang a verse of a song to me.A totally awesome concert!!!
Piano man, it tells the stories of how people lost their dream and ended up got trapped in life. The old man, John, Paul, Davy, the waitress, businessman, manager and probably Billy himself and everyone here, didn't we all forget something important just for making a living?
This is not that impressive for a 24 year old? 24 year olds are capable young adults at that core part of their life where they have the accessibility to create great things thanks to the foundation theyve built over their years AND they make refined things
“They’re sharing a drink they call loneliness, but it’s better than drinkin’ alone”-Billy Joel One of my favorite and most relatable lines in this song.
I'd be honored if some Billy Joel fans would give a quick listen to my acoustic piano & vocal performances of his classic compositions ALLENTOWN and VIENNA on my channel in tribute to the master. Live acoustic with no autotune or digital editing. Thanks and peace.
Billy Joel is amazingly talented. This song isn't a story he made up, however. This is based on his real life experiences with real people. His talent comes in expressing that with his songwriting and performances.
@@reesearnett4802 the way he presents all of their stories in song however is entirely his talent. Basing things on real life doesn’t mean someone can’t be a good director baby
A lot of people mention this song and Rocket Man by Elton John together because of their similar names (and the fact that some people mix up Billy Joel and Elton John). However, I feel like these two songs are pretty much opposite songs. The way I see Piano Man, it really captures the desire of people who feel stuck and want to leave the suburbs. Billy Joel talks about a very talented piano player (himself) who’s stuck playing at bars, virtually unrecognized other than by the people who frequent the bar. He mentions the bartender who wants to be a movie star. Rocket Man, on the other hand, is about a very successful man (once again, the artist is referencing themselves) who feels that he’s disconnected from others (in space), and wants to “come back down.” Ergo, Piano Man is about a man who’s stuck on the ground and wants to go up, whereas Rocket Man is about a man stuck in space and wants to come back down.
This was an awesome comparison. Very interesting. I suppose the thing we have to remember is it doesn’t matter where you are in life or what you’re doing just remember to make the most of it.
Thank you for that breakdown, I watch old music videos for this exact feeling of discovering something underneath that the musician had secretly planned for us to know all along
It’s 2020 and while music culture has changed so much everyone can agree that this is one of the greatest of all time and that Billy Joel was/is one of the greatest as well.
Elite 18 don’t worry you have your future to make up for it. You can make more memories. Good memories make us sad because we cant relive the past. Now if the sad memories come up it’s not your fault. If the song makes you feel sad it’s just the melancholic affect it has on you. I believe we all feel it too. I’m 20 and I’m also confused.
Joethegamer I dint understand why everyone loves Michael Jackson, a lot of music that gets talked about with him I like but I’ve never liked Michele Jackson
But there is also something else. Its not completly sad. Hard to describe. They are still all together in this which makes it wholesome in some way. Its just life...
One of the most truthful quotes I think... At the local bar I always make a point of chatting to the old men and women who are by themselves not by choice, but because their spouses have died..One day that might be me.....
This whole time I felt sorry for John the bartender because he never got to be a movie star, but now that I look at it he at least became a Music video star. =)
45 years and 3 months ago. The old man has died. John at the bar became a movie star. The waitress is running for president. And legend says Davy is still in the Navy.
sorry but Davy is definitely not in the Navy any more, they force those guys to retire at 62... I'd be honored if some Billy Joel fans would take a listen to my acoustic piano & vocal performances of his classic compositions ALLENTOWN and VIENNA on my channel in tribute to the master. Live acoustic with no autotune or digital editing. Thanks and peace.
How come I never see any Billy Joel songs in any "Greatest Songs of All Time" lists? I mean Piano Man, Goodnight Saigon, New York State of Mind and Leningrad are for me easily in the greatest 100 songs of all time!
No one knows him where I live! I come from Israel... I spent some time in upstate New York and that's how I got introduced to Billy Joel... But no one knows him around these parts...
This song makes you feel like an old person, even if you're a kid, and ur just bombarded with a huge wave of nostalgia that you don't even know or have.
My dad used to play the harmonica, when I heared this for the first time through a meme, the amount of nostalgia overflowing my brain and heart was unimaginable. My dad passed away a year ago, just wanted to say that. Thank you
I’ll still never understand how Billy Joel doesn’t know why this is such a big hit. It’s literally one of the greatest songs of all time. It tells a story, it’s bittersweet, it’s extremely catchy, it’s an easy sing-along, and everyone can relate to it. Deep down music is our escape from reality and it always will be…and that is exactly what the song is all about.
of course he knows why this is a hit. his message "pretending to not know" is, that you shouldnt be like the protagonist. dont indulge in nostalgia and past broken times, but look forward. same as ed sheeran "not understanding" how people want "happier" on their wedding. they know they made sad masterpieces. but they dont want people to be sad.
In my country the Netherlands we have every year at new years evening a radio show called top 2000 of all time. And in this show there are 3 songs always in the top 3 for decades. "the pianoman" is one of them. The others are Bohemian Rhapsody and Hotel California. So here they concider this as the greatest song ever been made.
the story of how Billy got run into the ground by his first wife could be a movie in itself... I'd be honored if some Billy Joel fans would take a quick listen to my acoustic piano & vocal performances of his classics ALLENTOWN and VIENNA on my YT channel in tribute to the master. Live acoustic with no autotune or digital editing. Thanks and don't forget to put some bread in my jar if you can spare it.
I think my favorite thing is how every verse is sad. Some of its obvious like the bartender who thinks he could make it in hollywood if he could get out of this place, but then you get subtle stuff like how paul is a real estate novelist. Thats not a thing. Thats the kind of thing you say to a guy at the bar to pretend to be someone successful. And being in the navy for life isnt automatically a bad thing, but you can tell he is a life long deck swabber, not a guy staying in there as he moves up the ladder and becomes an admiral or something. Just all of it, the closest thing they have to being happy is getting drunk and losing themselves to a good melody for a few minutes. And the song itself is melancholy in lyrical form.
I just spoke to Davy, and he isn't happy that you called him a deck swabber... I'd be honored if some Billy Joel fans would take a quick listen to my acoustic piano & vocal performances of his classic compositions ALLENTOWN and VIENNA on my channel in tribute to the master. Live acoustic with no autotune or digital editing. Thanks and peace.
I think you are wrong about the navy guy. In my opinion he is displaying a regular navy soldier (who is propably not having a chance to climb up the ladder of success. In this i agree with you). The probably will be for life sounds more like he is not going to survive the navy.
It's more about dreamers in NYC killing time in a piano bar in a Saturday night. Joel worked in one to pay his bills because he signed away his royalties for rent money. I made more money on my first two books than he did for his first eight years of albums.
Yea I don't get people who say they were born in the wrong generation because of music, you can still listen to that music, and you can do it anytime you want and anywhere you want
@Alexander yeah, I thought this was gonna be another “My generation is better cause (arbitrary cherry picked thing thats biased and could be found in any era” or “i’m better than you because i found this song via X instead of Y” type posts under any song that came out 5 or more years ago but in this specific case? nah Genuinely. One of the best and most underrated aspects of being alive is just living to see all the art made from times WAY in the past It’s genuinely cool how much shit gets to be archived and perserved now more than ever, and how it can just leave echoes for people in the future come back and find it all again. I ain’t ending this on a cynical note, y’all are right! I’m genuinely greatful for all the archivist and formats that were made to allow us to perserve and make finding art as accessible as it is today, and i’m glad that that brought us all here^^

The melancholy, the arrangement, the truth and the power of a song played on the piano- sweet angst - pure genius! Ode to the lonely -beautiful - We are so very blessed to be able to be listen and be present! 🕯️💛🕯️💛🕯️
For me the saddest lyric is when they “put bread in my jar and say ‘man what are you doin here?’” On many levels it’s about people meeting each other in a dump of a place, all close to rock bottom or even at rock bottom. There is an element of camaraderie among those going through sad times... I suppose even the talented piano man, who might have played big concerts in more elegant halls, is down on his luck... so the “what are you doin here?” is both a challenging and loving way to say... hey dude, you are amazing at what you do... why are you not more famous or successful? Oh man, what are we doin here?
The dude sung a song... about singing a song. Bro... This is genius

This song makes me nostalgic of memories I don't even have.
You feel the nostalgia from your life before this one
Yep 🤣🤣
Yet of memories u missed
So fucking true I get that so much. It's called precognitive nostalgia. Some believe it's from past lives. Some think it's the brain knowing one day the memory will happen and it becomes excited for the memory. Very common in sensitive or depressed people who don't have currently happy lives, so they hope that their future will be better. Hi, I'm Jack. And I'm too interested in my own psychology. Good day.

It's nine o'clock on a saturday
Regular crowd shuffles in
There's an old man sittin' next to me
Makin' love to his tonic and gin
He says: "Son can you play me a memory?"
I'm not really sure how it goes
But it's sad and it's sweet and I knew it complete
When I wore a younger man's clothes
La-la-la de-de da
La-la de-de da da-da
Sing us a song you're the piano man
Sing us a song tonight
Well we're all in the mood for a melody
And you've got us feelin' alright
Now John at the bar is a friend of mine
He gets me my drinks for free
And he's quick with a joke or to light up your smoke
But there's someplace that he'd rather be
He says Bill I believe this is killing me
As a smile ran away from his face
Well I'm sure that I could be a movie star
If I could get out of this place
Oh, la-la-la de-de da
La-la de-de da da-da
Now Paul is a real estate novelist
Who never had time for a wife
And he's talkin' with Davy who's still in the navy
And probably will be for life
And the waitress is practicing politics
As the businessmen slowly get stoned
Yes they're sharing a drink they call loneliness
But it's better than drinkin' alone
Sing us the song you're the piano man
Sing us a song tonight
Well we're all in the mood for a melody
And you've got us feelin' alright
It's a pretty good crowd for a saturday
And the manager gives me a smile
'Cause he knows that it's me they've been comin' to see
To forget about life for a while
And the piano it sounds like a carnival
And the microphone smells like a beer
And they sit at the bar and put bread in my jar
And say man what are you doin' here?
Oh, la-la-la de-de da
La-la de-de da da-da

Sing us a song tonight

If billy wasn't a singer i feel like he would be a movie director because he is so good at creating these stories in his songs.
He didn't completely make it up, most if not all people r baised off real people he knew
Don't make me think of a world without Billy Joel as a singer! :o
@@reesearnett4802 a lot of movies arent completely make it up either.
I've honestly never heard people compare them before...
This was an awesome comparison. Very interesting. I suppose the thing we have to remember is it doesn’t matter where you are in life or what you’re doing just remember to make the most of it.

Beautifully put, sir. It’s an absolute bona fide masterpiece
In my mind, the bar should be half empty, but, yeah, sometimes it's not up to the musician to decide his/her greatest hit.
Music IS my reality, not escape. Makes for a great life.

I'd be honored if some Billy Joel fans would take a quick listen to my acoustic piano & vocal performances of his classic compositions ALLENTOWN and VIENNA on my channel in tribute to the master. chris hubbard Agreed, this song is genius, every single lyric has such a deep meaning.
Will Ritter, you advertising son of gun...

I guess I was born in the right generation. I can listen to all kinds of great music with the click of a button.
had some good times at the record store back in the day
That's the real deal. We were born to late to explore the world and to young to explore the universe. But we are right born to explore the internet.
@@TSDLoading plot twist: last days of Rome collapse takes that away from you soon
Yea I don't get people who say they were born in the wrong generation because of music, you can still listen to that music, and you can do it anytime you want and anywhere you want
@Alexander yeah, I thought this was gonna be another
“My generation is better cause (arbitrary cherry picked thing thats biased and could be found in any era” or “i’m better than you because i found this song via X instead of Y” type posts under any song that came out 5 or more years ago but in this specific case? nah
Genuinely.
One of the best and most underrated aspects of being alive is just living to see all the art made from times WAY in the past
It’s genuinely cool how much shit gets to be archived and perserved now more than ever, and how it can just leave echoes for people in the future come back and find it all again.
I ain’t ending this on a cynical note, y’all are right! I’m genuinely greatful for all the archivist and formats that were made to allow us to perserve and make finding art as accessible as it is today, and i’m glad that that brought us all here^^
It's nine o'clock on a saturday
Regular crowd shuffles in
There's an old man sittin' next to me
Makin' love to his tonic and gin
He says: "Son can you play me a memory?"
I'm not really sure how it goes
But it's sad and it's sweet and I knew it complete
When I wore a younger man's clothes
La-la-la de-de da
La-la de-de da da-da
Sing us a song you're the piano man
Sing us a song tonight
Well we're all in the mood for a melody
And you've got us feelin' alright
Now John at the bar is a friend of mine
He gets me my drinks for free
And he's quick with a joke or to light up your smoke
But there's someplace that he'd rather be
He says Bill I believe this is killing me
As a smile ran away from his face
Well I'm sure that I could be a movie star
If I could get out of this place
Oh, la-la-la de-de da
La-la de-de da da-da
Now Paul is a real estate novelist
Who never had time for a wife
And he's talkin' with Davy who's still in the navy
And probably will be for life
And the waitress is practicing politics
As the businessmen slowly get stoned
Yes they're sharing a drink they call loneliness
But it's better than drinkin' alone
Sing us the song you're the piano man
Sing us a song tonight
Well we're all in the mood for a melody
And you've got us feelin' alright
It's a pretty good crowd for a saturday
And the manager gives me a smile
'Cause he knows that it's me they've been comin' to see
To forget about life for a while
And the piano it sounds like a carnival
And the microphone smells like a beer
And they sit at the bar and put bread in my jar
And say man what are you doin' here?
Oh, la-la-la de-de da
La-la de-de da da-da
Sing us the song you're the piano man
Sing us a song tonight
Well we're all in the mood for a melody
And you've got us feelin' alright
You're doing god's work.
Thank you, Owen.

aidan browning Simultaneously.
aidan browning Simultaneously... while singing... because he’s an overachiever.
When you comment the same thing 4hrs ahead of this person but the algorithm is broken so more people see his. 💋
The melancholy, the arrangement, the truth and the power of a song played on the piano- sweet angst - pure genius!
Ode to the lonely -beautiful - We are so very blessed to be able to be listen and be present!

For me the saddest lyric is when they “put bread in my jar and say ‘man what are you doin here?’”
On many levels it’s about people meeting each other in a dump of a place, all close to rock bottom or even at rock bottom.
Oh man, what are we doin here?
yes
