Not exactly his first single. On his first album - Cold Spring Harbor - there were 2 singles released though they both went nowhere. Then when he transferred to Columbia Records, they released this, in a sense his debut single on Columbia but third overall.
God I love this guy. Grew up listening to him in 1972 and never looked back. We play his greatest hits album in the car every time we travel from Kansas City to Denver to see family as we cross the state line. Both ways. Peter Paul and Mary made his Leaving on a Jet Plane main stream. But his version is just as good in my humble opinion. I miss him, I wish he was still on planet earth. ❤️
K🚀 is such an amazing singer and talent. Time to let this man have his career and life back. We’re being deprived of a really great artist. Would have been nice to see him play later years Sinatra. I hope after his interviews defending himself these past few weeks, one of these studios or streaming services will give him a chance on a great project. Hopefully it involves some singing too!

Not only is this the best version of this song that I have heard, but the most beautiful part is the fact that Billy allowed Tony Bennet to be on the stage and just be there. (Tony has Alzheimer's and con no longer sing.) So Billy put him on the pedestal that he deserves. A most awesome salute from Billy to Tony.

I just love how the how the people he got on stage went with their parts, and the crowd was singing along with it. Tony Bennett, was just moving to the music 🎶 A very beautiful tribute to him, too.
Mr. Joel is an ICON. I've grew up listening to how beautifully he put words on paper then turn it into magic from tickling some ivories. He is in fact the Piano Man. I'm glad to be living on earth to actually heard this live. Not just a recording.

I think the best part about this video, is the crowd just mouthing the lyrics at the beginning, then getting further into it (singing, waving, etc) as the song moves along. Truly a tune that brings everyone together, and you know everyone signing remembers where they've been when this song has come on

Just watching this again and it always makes me feel good. I was 19 in 1987 I think it was, when Billy Joel played at Kooyong in Melbourne Australia and it was my first concert. It was awesome bcoz Kooyong was a lot smaller than I realised so even the cheap seats got a good view. Ask anyone who knows me they'll tell you my favourite singer is Billy Joel haha even my adult children know. Oh well, I can't help it if I know the words of all his song's. He was here in Melbourne Australia a few weeks ago and he still sounds like his records, no filters needed for BJ. Have a happy and safe 2023 all.

I remember going to a show in Auckland New Zealand at the Logan Campbell Center. Billy and his band played to about 500 people indoors before his career soared. Mid 1970s. Fantastic show, fantastic band and a legend of a man. At the end of the show he said " don^t take any shit from anyone." Tickets were $12. Still play all his L.P.s 45 years later.
I guess that was the highlight of his day...

I wish I could meet Billy Joel and tell him how much his music has changed my life, I know this is personal but 2 years ago I lost my father and Billy Joel was his favorite artist and he was mine to and we would always listen to him together and sing together in the car I miss those days. To this day I still sing his songs and they always remind me of how my dad would sing piano man at home when I was asleep. Billy Joel is the one who kept me from sinking into depression, so thank you Billy Joel both you and my father have inspired me to continue with my music and to not give up.

I am going to see the band my sister and I had as our favourite the summer she died. I am nearly crying every day because I am so excited. I bought one ticket, because she’s the one coming with me. i love listening to the old songs and i’m teary eyed 🥺coz every year and every generation have passed, there’s always a song that will be replaced on a modern day. but i will still value and treasure the song that i’ve used to listen when i was child. and every time i hear the old songs at the present time, it brings me back a lot of memories. i hope they will not be forgotten in future 😢

I dont know. I dont think they have much time for that. But good musicians can rehearse their own part on their own. And then perhaps have a day or two to put it together.
Since it's so well known,l wouldn't be surprised if they didn't rehearse separately and in an hour they put it together..
