This was me and my girlfriend's song. I was a punk rocker from Peckham and she was from a rich family from Bromley. We met while I was a starving student. She kinda liked me. We're still married today after nearly 30 years together.
I had a brother that was 6 years older than me. This time was when you radio was massive and took a massive space to have it. This was the 80's. My brother got Billy Joels record that was released. This song has been stuck in my head for the last week. Getting old sucks, but it comes with some great oldies that magically pop in from nowhere for no reason.

My 16 year old grandson plays this song all the time. He is such an old soul. I like listening to it, also. It brings back so many memories Thank you,Billy Joel!
Something I love about this music video is how each of the four mechanics have a unique character to them. You could imagine a sitcom centered around these dudes. From left to right at 00:55... 1) The overconfident, aggressive flirt. Thinks of himself as a ladies man. Always scheming up something to get with the ladies. Bit of a jokester 2) The leader of the bunch. Rightfully confident, probably has the most experience. He has your back, and winds up fixing any troubles the group gets into. Reliable, an all-rounder 3) The new guy. Enthusiastic, but a bit naive. Likes to have fun, and often the first to get roped into any shenanigans. Wears his hat because he thinks he's supposed to. 4) The brains. Calm, the voice of reason. Socially stiff and a little awkward, but is a good guy. Wears his hat because it's professional
I was just told by a friend of mine that this was shot at the long, gone Sunoco gas station at the intersection of Bond St and Bowery in NYC. This was shot in 1983. My friend lives across from there and I remember going here many times in the late 90s. Now it's an upscale apartment building. Little by little, the NYC that I remember fades away. Not that I am complaining. If NYC ever stops changing, it is dead.
I remember going over one of my mother's friends houses to watch MTV with her son while she choir practice. It would just be me and him watching videos. He was older than I was, though. Prior to Michael Jackson's video "Thriller" coming on, you had to sit through Billy Joel's video "Uptown Girl", Lionel Ritchie's "All Night Long", and then FINALLY Michael Jackson's "Thriller" video came on. Simple times and I miss the fuck out of those years.
Everyone who is commenting is acting braindead. The commenter in question said "I still love the music of that era." Let it go. You can miss something that was made before you unless you never experienced it. E.g., you can't miss food you never ate. In this case, the commenter expressly stated that what he/she misses is the music. So let's insert "I do miss the 80s [style music."
I discovered Billy Joel very recently and now loving all his songs - Pianoman, Vienna, Uptown Girl. What i am liking the most is his art of telling very simple stories through his songs.
"For The Longest Time" is my favorite. Heard it pop up on the radio while in 7th grade English class back in '95. Stuck in my mind ever since even though I'm not a huge Billy Joel fan.
@@NobodyUndefined They're divorced now but in both of their day they were at the top of their game. Christy Brinkley was a huge super model. Her dancing is so basic in this vid but she got way better, to the point of playing Roxie Hart in Chicago on Broadway a couple years ago.
Billy Joel writes his own music, and he is a genius. This was written when he was dating supermodel Elle Macpherson and then ended up marrying supermodel Christie Brinkley (in the video). Quite a step up for the Piano Man! :D
dimXlights well this whole album “An Innocent Man” was an homage to the music of Billy’s youth and his inspirations. This song was inspired in the styles of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons.

Uptown girl
She's been living in her uptown world
I bet she's never had a backstreet guy
I bet her mama never told her why
I'm gonna try for an uptown girl
She's been living in her white bread world
As long as anyone with hot blood can
And now she's looking for a downtown man
That's what I am
And when she knows
What she wants from her time
And when she wakes up
And makes up her mind
She'll see I'm not so tough
Just because
I'm in love with an uptown girl
You know I've seen her in her uptown world
She's getting tired of her high class toys
And all the presents from her uptown boys
She's got a choice
Uptown girl
You know I can't afford to buy her pearls
But maybe someday when my ship comes in
She'll understand what kind of guy I've been
And then I'll win
And when she's walking
She's looking so fine
And when she's talking
She'll say that she's mine
She'll say I'm not so tough
Just because
I'm in love
With an uptown girl

Something I love about this music video is how each of the four mechanics have a unique character to them. You could imagine a sitcom centered around these dudes.
From left to right at 00:55...
1) The overconfident, aggressive flirt. Thinks of himself as a ladies man. Always scheming up something to get with the ladies. Bit of a jokester
2) The leader of the bunch. Rightfully confident, probably has the most experience. He has your back, and winds up fixing any troubles the group gets into. Reliable, an all-rounder
3) The new guy.

Happening here in fort worth texas too.
Makes sense, Billy Joel is an NY native.
I remember going to the town where I attended college back in 1995... barely recognized the place, because so much had changed.

MTV has gone down hill now :(

Everyone who is commenting is acting braindead. The commenter in question said "I still love the music of that era." Let it go. You can miss something that was made before you unless you never experienced it. E.g., you can't miss food you never ate. In this case, the commenter expressly stated that what he/she misses is the music. So let's insert "I do miss the 80s [style music."
I was born in 98 and grew up in the 2000's, and even I can admit this song is a banger. Better than most songs today even.
