Kilroy Was Here (1983) was Styx's last major hit album, reaching the top 3 in North America and the top 10 in Scandinavia, although it was less successful elsewhere. Its lead single, "Mr. Roboto", became Styx's third chart-topper in Canada, was a No. 3 hit in the US, and was their biggest hit in Germany (No. 8
I think it’s time to admit that the only way that Dennis DeYoung can talk to the other members of Styx is through their lawyers. He could be a really difficult musician to work with, so that shouldn’t surprise me that they never liked him.
Dennis had problems that he never came to terms with. That's too bad really, because he could have stayed on if he had addressed those issues. Oh well.
That's super hard to fathom. I was a huge, huge fan. Equinox, Crystal Ball, Grand Illusion, Pieces of Eight, Cornerstone, Paradise Theater, and then came Kilroy. I, and everyone I knew said, "Well man, it's over. It was a great run."
I had a brother in law who was the same way with U2. For him it was the Zooropa thing which I just never quite got into. That was the end for me. You listen to their early music and it's just too far a jump after Joshua Tree. Another brother in law did the same with Peter Gabriel and Steam. He said he thought it was his best song. I lent him my copy of his third album which seems to have always had some question as to the name. He wasn't able to go back in time. Gabriel's music that put him on the map as solo did nothing for him and I found that strange. Some songs get locked into an era sometimes because of the way they are produced. I am glad you were able to appreciate Styx' early music. I am old enough to have heard all of it fresh as it was released.
I was fortunate enough to meet Tommy Shaw and James Young backstage with my big sister in Houston on the Paradise Theater tour when I was in 6th grade. They were both so genuine and kind to us. It was not what I expected from one of the biggest rock bands of 1981. Tommy even signed my arm cast and I still have that piece of the cast in a ziplock somewhere. 😅😅😅 I understand their frustration with what was happening during the time of Kilroy. It was not a great album but I still believe to this day Dennis had one of the most amazing voices I’ve ever heard. I wish all of them the best no matter what has happened in the past or what the future will bring.
I get it, Kilroy was here was a departure from your usual stuff, but Mr. Roboto is one of your most well-known songs, I’ve seen Dennis solo many times, and he’s fantastic, wish they could make it work and do a farewell tour together as they are all pretty old
Well, I loved Styx with or without Dennis. I understand that the rest of Styx were more hard rock, while Dennis was more about doing Rock Operas. From a personal standpoint, I liked Kilroy but also loved the rock, that came before Dennis, but he brought a lighter side, that a lot of people liked. Too bad a spot couldn’t be opened for Dennis. He was the lighter side of Styx, and had a smoking hot voice that was just so memorable. Good luck to all the members of Styx. Just too bad that Dennis didn’t get the feeling of love, that Tommy felt.
Yeah this sounds like the same bitching from pink floyd members about Roger Waters, who was their genius. "Oh but he was so bossy and difficult" yeah, many musical geniuses are
Saw the Kilroy Was Here concert and it was awesome. I’m surprised they consider it such a failure. I’ve seen them without Dennis and really loved that one too. I think sometimes people think the group can’t go on without them and they quickly find out that’s not true. Example - Steve Perry. I wish all the best and keep rocking.
Wow, I’m just noticing, that my comment from last night got shadow banned! It was only one proper noun in that comment, that must’ve caused it to get shadow banned. So I got to rephrase it now, without using that (ex president’s) name.
Wow!!, my 2nd attempt at posting my comment. It was only one sentence, now with only using the first name, and it STILL got shadow banned !!(again!) This is ridiculous! You can’t even use this person’s first name in a comment (that also mentions. what body part, a glove is made for)
I think Gowan is great and has done better in replacing Dennis DeYoung than I could have imagined. I am a Styx fan from the early days and frankly all of their great music was with Dennis and it pains me to not see them together. As a teenager back in the 70s and early 80s I used to see Styx live and those concerts were magical. I've gone to see them a few times with Gowan but it just isn't the same. It's kind of like Pink Floyd without Roger Waters, Van Halen with David Lee Roth or Queen without Freddie Mercury. Enjoyable but simply not brilliant. Imagine had the Beatles continued without John Lennon?
Deep Purple said the same thing. Jon Lord said that if he had been the manager in 1973, he would have said, Take some time off, and he would have kept the classic lineup together longer.
Kilroy sold between 1-3 million copies (depending on the source) and was their 6th highest grossing album. It seemed like Dennis was trying to bring them more into the 1980's and they fought him all the way. I probably hear Mr Robato once a month whenever I'm out somewhere.
Their last Platinum Album! Edge of the Century had a very hard time coming close to Hold status but produced two top 25 hits including a SUPER top #3 smash 'SHOW ME THE WAY' & #25 'LOVE AT FIRST SIGHT' on Billboard top 40 in 1991!
Styx was a staple of the 70's and 80's, loved them then. IMO there is no Styx without Dennis DeYoung. Sure, he didnt do it completely alone, and these guys were clearly also important to the success of the band..but..it's also obvious that Dennis was the heart of soul of what Styx was. Later, after the "fallout", I always saw these other guys as whiners "biting the hand that feeds you". I've always been firmly on "team Dennis" :)
You're so correct! "There is no Styx without Dennis DeYoung" should be everywhere. Dennis DeYoung brought Tommy Shaw into Styx and Tommy Shaw stabbed him in the back.
i respectfully disagree with you, Scott, and the others who feel this way. Styx was a band whose collective was greater than their individual parts. Dennis forgot that. Dennis has had moderate if not little commercial success on his own. That is telling. In a band or team or family, sure there needs to be room for personal growth, yes, but even more importantly the good of the band must ultimately come first. When you can't do that, its time to move on. Listening to these three, it seems obvious that they tried to accommodate Dennis. But Dennis had became a major ego problem and thought he was the band. That type of narcissism is death to any relationship. Their last album together, Kilroy, with Mr. Roboto was to me then and still now somewhat bizarre. It didn't have the Styx vibe. Now that I know the story behind it, I like it even less. I can see why it has left hard feelings. Divorces are painful. And so it is with Styx. Seeing Dennis on stage in his toupee and so aged and still thrusting his hips like he is a sex symbol is somewhat cringee to me. These three seem very much happy and content being in their advance years. Big difference. Again though, Scott, I respect your opinion. Keeping the face-of-the-band lead singer of a favorite band in our youth in his "proper" position will always be the way it should be. But in this case, as it so often does, reality has has for us fans a rude awakening.
They are the same people who say Van Halen was better with DLR. they were good with DLR, but got better with Sammy Hagar. AC/DC went to the next level with Brian Johnson. STYX is better without DeYoung.
This break’s my heart that they’ve come to this with the key person of this band though they are equal in their own right, yet very mature & civil of their closure from their past success
If you have a top 10 hit that isn't the type of music your fanbase likes, you lose your existing fanbase, and you have to grow a new one. That's easier said than done. Kilroy was here was their first album I flat refused to buy. I also didn't go to that tour despite seeing their previous 2 tours, and I had a great time at their Paradise Theater tour.
@@andrewwaters9928 Their previous album, Paradise Theatre, went triple platinum in the US, and was their 4th triple platinum album in a row, the first band to do that, so no, I don't think they were past their peak before Kilroy. Then Kilroy was here went single Platinum, then after that there were no more platinum albums. So IMO, Kilroy was their first "past their peak" album. That was the beginning of the end for Styx.
Nothing lasts forever. It's pretty obvious the wounds are deep. I just saw their Gilford, NH show and it was spectacular! I've seen recent videos of Dennis's shows and they are spectacular. Enjoy it all because soon it'll be gone.

Tommy is from Montgomery alabama. Growing up in Alabama in the 60s and 70s there was several gospel shows that were on TV before church. The show he referenced had a band call Sister Maybelle Goodman and the Happy Goodman Family and the led off the show with the opening song "Jubilee." Everyone my age from South Alabama and Georgia knew this this band.

I will always see Styx as the main members. I started following Styx at 10 years old and they were my favorite band. Dennis had so much to offer and the reason Tommy ( who I had a crush on) was in the band. Like a divorce is right. I miss them and never forget them.
Certain bands become glorified cover bands without the iconic vocals of their original lead singer. A few bands have managed to pull it off, but many cannot. Led Zep without Plant, Queen without Mercury, Foreigner without Gramm, and Styx without DeYoung? No way, bro.
Saw Styx in the 1990’s. Great show. Maybe the best balanced sound of any band I’ve ever seen. I know they took extra time to get the sound just right. Also, Mr. Roboto was different, sure, but was actually a very good album. Domo arigato, Mr. Roboto!
I always liked Styx, and I appreciate Dennis and his singing and talent. I was big into Cornerstone and Paradise Theater. To me, Tommy Shaw, his singing and guitar playing was the best part of Styx. I see him performing and am amazed by his talent even now. And what a great person to be around and work with. The other guys are great as well, I don't want to forget them. Best of luck to DeYoung, though.
I've always liked "Kilroy was here" and it's still one of my favorite Styx albums. Then again, I can't think of one Styx album I don't like. It was hard (at first) for me to accept Lawrence, but I'm a fan of him now.
The band originated back in 1962, playing parties, weddings, etc. It took alot of dedication and brotherly love to have lasted so long. Then came all the game and fortune that triggered the most common enemy...EGOS TOOK OVER. This is so typical in the entertainment business.
Nobody likes to talk about it, but it was money. The guy who writes the big hit songs makes more money than the others by a significant amount. That always creates problems.
You can have this stereo image of musicians then watch these thoughtful, reflective, considered, respectful responses and go they weren’t just impressive musicians but were also impressive people.

DeYoung was the band's most prolific and successful writer, having been credited as the writer of more Styx songs than any other band member. DeYoung penned seven of the band's eight Billboard top 10 singles as well as a solo top 10 single.
He has the most beautiful voice and his the most creative!
They are also a rock band and back in the day the fans bought the albums. Tommy wrote 2 of their best songs, Fooling yourself and Blue Collor Man. Miss america one of their best Rockin songs was written and sung by James Young
I THINK HE SUCKED.
@@seaturtledog since you're naming names, Too Much Time is the best Styx song, with Lady and it's guitar solo a close 2nd. They totally lost me with Kilroy. Sometimes there's a line a band can cross and their fans don't listen to their new stuff so much.
DeYoung is a whiner with zero vision.
Cool. Thanks for sharing.
Canadian, or whatever. The guy is level headed and has a great sense of humour. And to cap it all, he’s a great musician.
@@soberminded7716 exactly what it says. I don’t care if he’s Chinese, African, German, Australian…. Whatever/wherever. So get off your uppity horse and go to school.
@@soberminded7716 Whatever, wherever. They made a point of saying he’s Canadian. I couldn’t care if he’s Chinese, German, African etc, etc. He’s a great musician full stop. You obviously have something against Canadians. It’s spelt with a capital “C”.
@@soberminded7716 only one capital letter, the C.
@@soberminded7716 well if that’s the way you feel (your prerogative), I fail to understand why you watched the video in the first place. Seems you enjoy wasting your time. I have followed the band since their first album and still support them. They’ve paid their dues and have earned the rock star “egos”. It comes with the territory. I have respect for, and take pride in, my country and spell it correctly.
Loved Gowans tribute to Neil Peart
Love that reference to the Happy Goodman Family. They were awesome.
It is also when a lot of us stopped listening. To be blunt, it sucked.
@@zonacrs one album made you stop some fan
@@zonacrsand you were in the minority. Thats why they play Kilroy songs now.....the fans spoke and they were the ones buying tickets
Kilroy sucked the big one
@Peter-f1z I thought It was OK. Really like Mr. Roboto
Styx is one of my favorite bands of all time. Not so much for their music, but for their lyrics: alway insightful, and/or uplifting.
Oh well.
He's a singer.
I have 2 tee shirts when they toured with Bad Company in 2001 in San Antonio Tx. What a great show. I can believe it been 23 years ago.
I had no idea that David Spade was in Styx. Learn something new everyday.
It is Daves brother, and he is a dwarf.
saw them last month, fantastic show!
Well maybe I'm not the typical styx fan, but, Kilroy was the album that made me love Styx! I then went back and fell in love with their older work
Same here!
Same. It's shocking to hear so many didn't like it.
I thought it was a good album. Not their best by a stretch, but still a good album.
Ego that's all
Every one of them.
I get it, Kilroy was here was a departure from your usual stuff, but Mr. Roboto is one of your most well-known songs, I’ve seen Dennis solo many times, and he’s fantastic, wish they could make it work and do a farewell tour together as they are all pretty old
The 'STYX aka STYNX' band are too bitter! I say F$@k em!
Kilroy voted most likely to be heard in elevators where you live.
There thing was actually the two influence melded together. Dennis brought the chocolate and the rest brought the peanut butter.
They kick ass live.
Time to go on tour with Dennis and Lawrence together in Styx. Life is too short not to heal the wounds that still remain open.
They won't do it cuz they drink an things, an Dennis is Christian. And they don't want to hear it.
No.
Lawrence is great, sounds great and a great entertainer. I go see them whenever they tour!
Dennis wrote, sang and arranged the songs that brought success, Not the manager.
Bingo>>> couldn't have said it, better.
Yeah this sounds like the same bitching from pink floyd members about Roger Waters, who was their genius. "Oh but he was so bossy and difficult" yeah, many musical geniuses are
The new guy is a wannabe. They wanna make money.
Bull butter!
I bought that album domo arigatoing ever since
Styx without Dennis is not Styx like Foreigner without Lou Gramm. Like Queen without Freddie Mercury... Simple.
100% was thinking the same thing
Saw the Kilroy Was Here concert and it was awesome. I’m surprised they consider it such a failure. I’ve seen them without Dennis and really loved that one too. I think sometimes people think the group can’t go on without them and they quickly find out that’s not true. Example - Steve Perry. I wish all the best and keep rocking.
My god Tommy Shaw looks small. Look at his hands compared to JT's. Major talent to be able to play such shredding guitar with such tiny hands.
Looks like he has trump-hand syndrome. 😂
Maybe, but JT is a pretty big guy which might be making TS appear small being right next to him.
Wow, I’m just noticing, that my comment from last night got shadow banned! It was only one proper noun in that comment, that must’ve caused it to get shadow banned.
So I got to rephrase it now, without using that (ex president’s) name.
Appears he must have donald-hands syndrome. 😂
Wow!!, my 2nd attempt at posting my comment. It was only one sentence, now with only using the first name, and it STILL got shadow banned !!(again!)
This is ridiculous! You can’t even use this person’s first name in a comment (that also mentions. what body part, a glove is made for)
Tommy is so good with his thoughts and words
I think Gowan is great and has done better in replacing Dennis DeYoung than I could have imagined. I am a Styx fan from the early days and frankly all of their great music was with Dennis and it pains me to not see them together. As a teenager back in the 70s and early 80s I used to see Styx live and those concerts were magical. I've gone to see them a few times with Gowan but it just isn't the same. It's kind of like Pink Floyd without Roger Waters, Van Halen with David Lee Roth or Queen without Freddie Mercury. Enjoyable but simply not brilliant. Imagine had the Beatles continued without John Lennon?
exactly
Deep Purple said the same thing. Jon Lord said that if he had been the manager in 1973, he would have said, Take some time off, and he would have kept the classic lineup together longer.
Kilroy sold between 1-3 million copies (depending on the source) and was their 6th highest grossing album. It seemed like Dennis was trying to bring them more into the 1980's and they fought him all the way. I probably hear Mr Robato once a month whenever I'm out somewhere.
Certified Platinum according to Wiki.
Certified GOLD at most 'Edge of the Century'!
I still remember Cold War, and I haven't heard it in about 40 years.
100% agree. Kicking Dennis out was a dumb move on their part.
i respectfully disagree with you, Scott, and the others who feel this way.
@@darylbryant3134 Apples and oranges.
This break’s my heart that they’ve come to this with the key person of this band though they are equal in their own right, yet very mature & civil of their closure from their past success
Maybe the tour wasn't a financial success but "Kilroy Was Here" went to #3 on the album chart and had two top 10 hits. Hard to call it a failure.
Not every top ten hit is actually a really good piece of music. Popularity has more to do with it. Styx had much better material.
KILROY WAS STYX TRASH...TRASH...
It was the first one I did buy, so I guess we cancelled each other out. But honestly, weren't they pretty much past their peak at that point?
@@andrewwaters9928 Their previous album, Paradise Theatre, went triple platinum in the US, and was their 4th triple platinum album in a row, the first band to do that, so no, I don't think they were past their peak before Kilroy.
Then Kilroy was here went single Platinum, then after that there were no more platinum albums. So IMO, Kilroy was their first "past their peak" album. That was the beginning of the end for Styx.
Dennis will always be STYX
Nothing lasts forever. It's pretty obvious the wounds are deep. I just saw their Gilford, NH show and it was spectacular! I've seen recent videos of Dennis's shows and they are spectacular. Enjoy it all because soon it'll be gone.
The great songs have been written. Anyone can play an instrument to play the songs, but only these guys can sound like they do. I saaw them in concert (w/ KISS), and they were awesome!
Ironic they're sustaining today and playing songs from that "failed" album but hypocritically keep DeYoung out. When he brought up the 4 triple platinum albums and ehat was the formula it was DENNIS
Yeah, no. But thanks for playing.
@@rapid13 Truth knows no scrutiny no matter ur fanboy feelings....
Similar to pink floyd after Roger Waters. "Oh he was so bossy and difficult" while they play his written songs in stadiums.
Dennis doesn't want to be part of the band anymore and also doesn't want the rest of the band to go on.
@@jeffreyrichard2575 He's stated he does want to be in it and that all the other singers aren't doing it justice that he can and he's right.Hes said it's ironic they're keeping him out because of him wanting to do songs like Mr Roboto which they're now doing again so that there's no reason he shouldn't becback
First saw them in 1997/1998 I think it was the first tours with Lawrence maybe 99.
Either way, loved them then and now! Lawrence is a stud!
JY comes off so bad. Even his body language is bad.
Why do you think that?
I remember Larry's Gowan-Fu moved in his "Strange Animal" video still to this day. 😁
Great tune though.
I wonder if they do any of his solo stuff live?
_Moonlight Desires_ is a great track.
I don’t understand all of the bitter comments towards this band ?? Okay we get it you like De Young. But to say they are not successful without him is absurd!!!! These guys are still touring the country and selling out venues night after night…and sound amazing I might add!!! What is DeYoung doing besides releasing his seventh solo record in 2020 which took 10 years to complete????? Give me a break!! I am old enough to know both Styx versions and actually loved what DeYoung brought to the table. But to disparage an incredibly hard working band, who sound amazing I might add, is absolutely ridiculous!!!!!
the recent tour had 13 songs 7 of which deyoung sang and wrote. shaw and young lied about replacing deyoung they did it for greed while he was ill. we styx fans are not stupid we know they took that magic from us.
It’s sad…..Dennis is a genius….and so are Tommy and JY………but damn they were good……I saw them in Portland right before they broke up for good…….at Portland meadows….lol….for those who don’t know…..it was a horse track…..Kansas opened up for them…..it was incredible…….
Split with Dennis is easy when Tommy Shaw is in the band. He’s the real singer.
Saw Styx in the 1990’s. Great show. Maybe the best balanced sound of any band I’ve ever seen. I know they took extra time to get the sound just right. Also, Mr. Roboto was different, sure, but was actually a very good album. Domo arigato, Mr. Roboto!
Such a shame.Such a fantastic band.Wishing and hoping for the best for Styx.🤞👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
All class - no trash. This is what makes them so respectable. Amazing writers and performers...and Lawrence Gowan too !!!
I wish they would just get back together because they were better with Dennis, Life is too short to hold on to grudges
I feel the same about Journey
Some people lose their way… it was the right think to do.
If the Eagles did it and Most recently OASIS, anything is possible
I wish they would've just never gotten back together after 1984.
all about egos
Ok mad props to Tommy Shaw for referencing the Happy Goodman Family. I dig that.
These guys wrote great poppy-rock songs. Dennis DeYoung was on a whole other level of genius!
Mr roboto still one of my fav songs and videos . That said I’ve never gone back to an old job or an ex.
I've always liked "Kilroy was here" and it's still one of my favorite Styx albums. Then again, I can't think of one Styx album I don't like. It was hard (at first) for me to accept Lawrence, but I'm a fan of him now.
Liston to GOWAN's solo songs from the 80's... he was Canada's Freddie Mercury!! Trust me!
"Amen, brother Tommy." I love that.
The band originated back in 1962, playing parties, weddings, etc. It took alot of dedication and brotherly love to have lasted so long. Then came all the game and fortune that triggered the most common enemy...EGOS TOOK OVER. This is so typical in the entertainment business.
Tommy Shaw got into substance abuse.
Nobody likes to talk about it, but it was money. The guy who writes the big hit songs makes more money than the others by a significant amount. That always creates problems.
They originated in 1962?. . . That’s near the time, the Beatles in the Beach boys started. That would make all the band members over age 80+ by now.
He says Styx has been around since 1971 5:44 (you must’ve fat finger the year “62”)
@@MikeCee7 Dennis DeYoung and the Panozzos started playing together in 1962, when they were teenagers.
You can have this stereo image of musicians then watch these thoughtful, reflective, considered, respectful responses and go they weren’t just impressive musicians but were also impressive people.
