@johnankerberg This verse admittedly uses the phrase "eternal punishment," but it is juxtaposed against the phrase "eternal life." Death by annihilation in the Lake of Fire could certainly be called "eternal punishment" because it is eternal in its consequences. Death on earth is only temporal because everyone will be raised again at the resurrection. Death in the Lake of Fire, however, is eternal:
@jesusLostChildren777 If Jesus had intended what most churches believe he did with this verse, he should have said, "Both the righteous and the unrighteous will go away to eternal life, but the unrighteous will spend it being tortured while the righteous spend theirs in paradise."

I am amazed that we still get people that think that the pit or hell as people have come to know it isn't real when it is as real as you or me. So I ask the question to those who do not believe that hell is real. What version are you reading from and second what preacher ect is telling you this?

@aaa333ify - In Genesis, Abraham believed God when God said that He would send a "seed" from his descendants whereby men could be saved. That seed was Jesus. Abraham was trusting God for a Savior in the future, & it was counted to him as righteousness - Romans 4:3. It is by trusting God that we believe in His Son. We can't come to God our own way.
Matthew 10:28 Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather, be afraid of the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell. so the bible contradict it self? clearly it say it can kill the body and soul.i dont now about you but destroying something dont mean we life forever in Hell. 1 Timothy 6:15-16

@jesusLostChildren777 Death in the Lake of Fire, however, is eternal: there is no reversing it and no coming back from it. If Jesus meant for the punishment to last eternally, he probably wouldn't have contrasted it with the phrase "eternal life" which is clearly meant only for believers.
John 6:54-"He who eats My flesh and drinks My blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day." John 10:28-"and I give eternal life to them, and they will never perish; and no one will snatch them out of My hand."Rom 6:23-"For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord." over and over the bible clearly say that eternal life is only for the saved!

Eternal life is only in God's son. The unrighteous do not have the gift of eternal life. so if people tell you that if you die right now unsaved you life forever in hell.then you now its not right
Thank you for your comments. Jesus taught more about hell than about heaven. Jesus tells us there is an eteranl punishment in Matthew 25:46 (NASB) - 46"These will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life."

That's a nice explanation. If men reject the lesser light (aka natural revelation) God will not reveal the greater light (aka special revelation--that Jesus Christ is the only way of salvation). However, it is possible to accept the lesser light and reject the greater light...

The way most churches interpret this, they mentally replace the very clear word "perish" with something that means nearly the opposite: "never perish."Once again, the words "eternal life" and "life" are associated strictly with the righteous. The word "death" is reserved for the unrighteous, who will not go to Heaven.-
Why try and reach the lost......? They are better off not hearing the Gospel since their guaranteed heaven already. Why did paul preach the "Good News" to those who hadnt heard it, if they were going to heaven already? I do love Dr. Martin and think he is an excellent teacher, but this belief and teaching is false.
@aaa333ify God is the creator of all things. No one but God has the power to create. Satan did not invent this place of torment; God did. It was God's design. God isn't sitting up in Heaven with His hands tied wishing He had the power to change the system-it's His own system! Even those who try to claim that God did not create Hell still have to accept that it is fully within His power to destroy it.
With all respect to the late Dr. Martin, I would go a step further and say that the fact that all the billions who died without hearing the name of Christ is confirmation that those same people sadly never truly sought salvation. (Romans 10:14,15)
Only Christianity confirms what is revealed with the conscious, that man cannot satisfy God through works.
The question is asked in a prejudicial manner. It should be: Will men be sent to hell IF they haven't about Jesus. This is more to the point and what people are really asking. The answer to the question as it is stated here now is simple: No! Men will be sent to hell because they are sinners and the wages of sin is death.
The answer to the question as I have suggested it be modified (IF) is yes. The wages of sin is still death whether you have heard of Jesus or not. Martin's answer is unsound.
In gen 7 .22 he destroyed everything that had the breath (reach of life ) animals and humans same breath man is not created immortal .
This is a question I assume the answer to is no, I think it should be assumed as no so that we strive with all our effort to tell the world about Jesus!
That light Dr Martin speaks of is the innate 'divinity', so to speak, within all things.
He admits that the creator has countless ways to reach the creation.
This 'doctrine' of 'Jesus is the only way' is an elementary understanding of what the Christ taught and imparted to the earth.
Furthermore, Christlike figures come in various manifestations. Its simply the WORD made manifest. We can find the WORD in Buddha, Krishna, etc. This doesnt discount Jesus's unique role in the universe

Ottawan61350, YAHUSHUA (JESUS CHRIST) used that city dump "Gehenna" as an analogy of the Lake of Fire for the common people who were familiar with that garbage dump, so that they could get a better idea of what the Lake of Fire will be like. Unquenchable fire, utter darkness, worms and maggots that will not die, that is always having some rot to feed off of. And the continuous yelling, cursing and horrific screaming that will all be present forever in this Lake of Fire and Brimstone.
@jesusLostChildren777 It takes a good bit of theological gymnastics to continually reinterpret these divinely inspired Words of God to mean the exact opposite of their natural meanings. Since when does "death" mean "eternal life away from God"? If John intended to say that, he should have used almost any other word instead of "death."

(Psalms 37:20. vanish a way into smoke i dont think you are vanished if you are still in Hell.
How would you explain Romans 10:14? How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher?
I honestly don't know why do people even consider these types of questions number one if you already believe in God then you should already have it's in your mind that he is a just God and the responsibilities line with those that hear the gospel and those who haven't are judged according to their works with there Society taking into account and that judgment for example take Noah the Bible doesn't say he was righteous bye the Lord's definition of pure righteousness the Bible clearly states he was righteous in his generation so he had his flaws and sure but in comparison to his generation he was righteous
@aaa333ify - If someone is truly seeking God, He will reveal the truth to them & they will come to believe in Jesus. I have heard so many testimonies from missionaries of natives telling them that they knew about Jesus, they just didn't know his name. God uses various ways to communicate to individuals about Jesus. God is just, so He isn't going to allow people to go to hell without giving them the opportunity to accept Jesus. I will have to check on the Greek word for you - JAS Staff

Also what about when Jesus said that many will come from the east and the west and come sit with abraham Isaac and jacob in the kingdom of heaven, is he talking about the entire world even though they have never heard of him?

Sheol in the OT and Hades in the NT are the state of the dead, not a burial site as is qwber in hebrew. Thanatos in the greek is an enduring state, not a momentary thing. You need to look at the words translated into these words. You forgot pit also.
The pace many call hell is from the city dump, ben hinnom valley. ghi-hinnom is gehenna which as you can see is from the word and refers to the place of destruction.

Where is this lesser light greater light doctrine? I love Walter Martin and I am a bible expert and have no idea what he is talking about lesser and greater lights. Is the sincere Hindu saved?
+Horace Ball Well, if the Hindu continues in sin, sin that is evident to him through his conscience... and if the Hindu beats up Muslims or Christians because that's the normal thing to do, then I think they are not saved. However, if the Hindu, in his ignorance of the truth, does his best to follow the conscience God gave him, and is loving to all, even those who he disagrees with, God will judge him. The Bible says that to who much is given, much will be expected. Much of the world has been given the Gospel, and has heard it explained in detail. These people will have a harsher judgment than those who haven't heard at all. The problem with this question is that many ask it looking for some kind of excuse.

+Horace Ball But how Christ is found and accepted isn't the same for us all. I was surprised by his usage of a lesser light and greater light terminology however because that is an Adventist view on Ellen White's writings.
I present scripture to confirm scripture b/c the truth God the HS lives in me. Just as many only present only a opinion,that rejects who God is a triune being and what JC has called us to teach ,about this triune God. And this makes all rejecting JC as God as having the spirit of this world an antichrist spirit proven by the word. As my words only confirm what JC teaches and commands those who love him to do the same.
To reject the triune God is to reject clear teachings of JC and that means all that do are not Christian,b/c to be a Christian means you follow the teachings of JC. And he tells his followers to teach about the triune God.

(These verses identify why you who reject the trinity do so b/c you have not the HS of God in you and you are still lost in your sins,and will awake in a real hell b/c you are not born again and do not the mind of Christ, being in agreement with him by the HS.)

The doctrine of the trinity is clearly established and men who reject it have the spirit of the world.and not the Spirit of God.

Make a U turn brothers to JC seek the truth then accept it,be not deceived. What is your certainty and your security that what you believe is true ,when it can't even be proven by the word of God.
