I use bamboo wooden 1/2” long tee for irons push down to ground level. I use a small 1/4” off ground level castle tee for hybrids and 5 wood. 1/2” off ground level castle for 3 wood.
I hit orange tees for the driver, and blue tees for anything else. I tried red tees in the past but thought I needed a little more height to avoid fat shots. I will try them again this week.
I tried red tees yesterday and they worked well. Shots were straighter. Will try them again today and I ordered more. I will try the pink ones today too. When I tried them in the past, I found that I liked the height I was getting off the orange tees. I am starting to hit the ball better so I will see if the pink ones can give me even better results.
Very interesting results, I use a very low tee height similar to your green ones for all my irons and my hybrid and they are perfect for my swing characteristics, switching to a higher tee would cause my AoA to change and I would definitely not see significant distance increases as you did.
Hi Gary, How you even hit a short iron off the red and blue tees baffles me, I wont even hit a short iron off the green tee I would just knock a little ground to get a perfect lie nice and sat up. You say you dont feel confident with the green tee, but you hit irons off the deck waya way way more than you do tees so how does it feel too low? If you hit off the floor you will hit your normal yardage surely so its all in your mind with the green tee in my opinion.
@@garymartingolfi said above that i use the green tees, but i really push them into the ground for irons, i am only using the tee as a secure base for the ball
Liam on golf mates, his pro golfer mate says he and other pros always tee the ball up for iron shots as it gives you a more consistent advantage striking the ball. Yes you can knock the ground up but its not the same, although it looks cooler which for a lot of golfers is all that matters 😂
I use 1 1/2 inch wooden tees for my irons, hybrids and fairway woods and adjust the height accordingly, and I use a 3 1/4 inch brush tee for my driver. The short wooden tees are pretty much unbreakable and the brush tee gives me a consistent height for for my driver, and is also unbreakable and easy to find.
Morning Gaz, it’s strange but I have the same feeling as yourself with the green tee. The green one should be the one based on the fact that we play most of our iron shots off the fairway, I use the red ones for my irons and fairway woods and yes I do feel more confident with this setup.
I have used a red graduated tee off winter mats because I don’t want to smash the club head into the mat .. would result in wrist issues .. but now we are back on grass tees, I might go to a lower green tee to “encourage” me to hit down on the ball and make a nice ball-then-divot contact
Hi Gaz. Great vid. I’ve just been experimenting with these also. Red tees are my choice. I’d like to see comparisons between club choice of say 7 wood, hybrid or 3 iron. I’m currently looking for something that hits around 200 mark but very undecided around this are. Cheers mate. Great content
If you ever want a chat about it, welcome to have a chat with you on the phone about things to consider. I’m not going to get chance to get anything out in the next couple of weeks but I can put it on my to do list. Thanks Gaz
Interesting to see if hitting off a tee on grass rather than a mat makes any difference.. my son’s golf couch is always telling them to take a divot so the ball hits the middle grooves of the club .. off a mat that is difficult to simulate
I use the green tees for irons, works well but when I’ve lost them all I’ll be buying the same height orange tees so I have a chance of finding them sometimes. I also use same the height for hybrids and fairways as it keeps my swing & ball position similar to off the deck. What would be the difference on grass using the tees against off the turf? Looking at your data though I might give the red tees another go, thanks Gary.
I use 1 1/4" tees for my irons, and I put my pinky finger in between the ball and the ground to make sure it's teed up to just about the same height every time
I've only been playing for 7 months and I use green tees for Irons, Hybrids and 5 Wood, move up to red for 3 Wood and up again to pink or white for Driver.
Surely dispersion and consistency is more important especially on par 3. Losing distance is easily compensated by clubbing up. Why don't you compare green tee clubbed up for dispersion compared with red tees with your red tee distances. Also approach angle may mean less run out. Also a higher tee may cause you to miss hit when on grass.
Liam from Golfmates mentioned that after he caddied for Dan Gavin’s he couldn’t believe how much higher the Pro’s teed it up on par 3’s. On your last comment RE: hackers, I can’t believe you wouldn’t use a red tee to guarantee the right height every time. So by tha5 measure, on some par 3 s you could be short not by strike but by tee height and you don’t even know it. Park the ego Gaz 😀
I’ve used the green tees for irons, hybrids and fairway clubs off the tee for years, i find the red tees result in hitting too high in the face. Horses for courses i guess, i have checked on a launch monitor, i compress the ball better off the green tees
i don't understand. How do you compress the ball with an iron when you are teeing it up off the ground? I have always pushed the tee down close to the ground. I thought the purpose of using a tee with an iron was to be sure that you have an even stable base. Are you trying to hit up on the ball like a driver, instead of down on the ball?
Interesting the difference in distances between the green and red tee's. I always resisted the temptation of teeing too high as it would then feel to different to when playing that same club from the fairway 🤔🏌️
Gaz, do you struggle hitting long and mid irons off the deck? I think by pegging it up, that you get flier like conditions, higher strike, less spin. I wouldnt want less spin/control hitting irons into greens.
The more I tested it after the video, I realised for some bizarre reason, I preferred short irons off higher tees, and long irons off shorter tees. I could end up being red and blue too 😅😂
Watching a you tube video a few years ago and a golf pro on it said he always uses a tee as you a more likely to hit it on the sweet spot which makes sense 🏌️♂️
Hi Gary, I know I shouldn't have but I did...... I signed up to Ali X and got a discount on 13 "Golf Pride CP2s".....paid £20.70!!!!!!!!.... I obviously know they are not genuine but they look and feel nice and if I get a year out of them then I would consider that a good deal.....🌟🎊🤩🥳
You know I’d never judge you. I’m just glad I could make everyone aware it’s not real gear, and make people aware of how much it looks real so that they can be aware of fakes on the Facebook marketplace etc. glad your happy 😃
I don't remember you mentioning ball spin in the data. I looked at it and there was a slight difference. So you gain good yardage but lose a little spin.
I wouldn’t say I’m a hacker play off 3ish - I use green for irons and woods pink for driver- I couldn’t care less what people think - they soon change their mind when they see my ball flight 😊😊
I'm totally baffled by why you feel so uncomfortable with the ball tee at its lowest, as the Tee box is the only place you use a tee, so how do you manage to hit any other iron off the turf without also feeling 'uncomfortable'? But I would also think that the tee height is also dependent on how much you naturally hit down and through ball to compress it, which is how we'd 'naturally' do it off the turf. By teeing it higher, I guess you end it 'sweeping' it off the tee. Interesting and definitely worth a try given how much extra yardage seen on your small test.
I think I’m just that used to teeing it up on par 3’s, hitting off a lower tee feels uncomfortable. I almost felt like I was going to hit the ground heavy. You’re right though, I don’t struggle off the fairway, so if us surprising I felt like that tbh.
I use bamboo wooden 1/2” long tee for irons push down to ground level. I use a small 1/4” off ground level castle tee for hybrids and 5 wood. 1/2” off ground level castle for 3 wood.
I use half broken tees I find on the tee box for my irons.
That’s what I do atm 👌🏼
I use the red 32mm tees for irons or hybrids off the tee. Orange 70mm for my driver. Pink 57mm if I want a lower fade with my driver. ⛳️
I hit orange tees for the driver, and blue tees for anything else. I tried red tees in the past but thought I needed a little more height to avoid fat shots. I will try them again this week.
Not sure about red myself I use blue. Just moved to pink for driver from orange

I struggle teeing up on irons, much prefer giving the ground a little lift and hitting directly off turf.
A few people have said this
I have used a red graduated tee off winter mats because I don’t want to smash the club head into the mat .. would result in wrist issues .. but now we are back on grass tees, I might go to a lower green tee to “encourage” me to hit down on the ball and make a nice ball-then-divot contact

Hi Gary, great video, I wouldn't say it's hackers that use them. They give a consistency on the tee that gives more confidence
I know, I know, it’s just an old stereotype in golf. I’ve seen good golfers use them too.

Great tee height video Gaz, I’m guilty of teeing it too low with my irons Gaz so tomorrow evening I will tee it higher when I’m on a par 3
Worth a try

I like the stone in the golf room. 👍

Most the golf pros tee it up on a par 3. I thought that using a golf tee, just made it easier to strike the ball cleaner.

Whats your club path and attack angle? Are you changing delivery with the ball on different tee heights
Hitting a descending strike?
