Did you know about this when you began or discover it as part of the process? Dizzying fun! Also, the turning is beautiful just sitting quietly on a surface.
Hi Lois. I was aware of the effect and how to achieve it before this video, it has happened by accident in quite a few previous projects. That said, I hadn’t considered how much more eye catching it would be with this piece until it was almost finished 😊👍🏻

First, I love that sharpener. Second, only you can make changing a chuck interesting, and now you have incorporated a wood lathe into a visual illusion. Fantastic!
I would use that gorgeous plate as a dining table centerpiece with fresh fruit in it. I can think of many things to place in it. Or just by itself as a beautiful art piece. I just love it! ❤

the illusion is just fantastic and implements the optical vision as if your mind is sinking into it. It is almost the same effect with car weels. Thank you for this! 👍
Thanks Eva. The effect is due to the relationship between the lathe rpm and that camera frame rate. When they are the same the piece seems to remain still but multiples of this it can move forwards or backwards. Did you like the music?
@@JackMackWoodturning hello Jack, thanks for your comment. I was so focussed on watching you, that I did not realise that there was music in the background.
Hiya Mr. Jack Mack. So that's how you made those holes in this piece!! I thought for sure you were a marksman with a rifle too! Haha grin. I really like how you show us the professional whetstone sharpening machine you use, as most people know that one absolutely needs a finely sharpened tool not only for safety reasons, but for high quality best results. No doubt in my mind you are the top notch pro in this field. Grin 😊✨
@@JackMackWoodturning I would love to, but I'm in the process of moving, so it'll be a year or more before I have my shop back up and running. Until then, I have your channel to watch! 👍
Very cool. You might consider using a design similar to that but making it into a wall clock. Might take some precision if you wanted to make the lines representing the seconds, minutes, and hours. and you'd have to get the mechanism for the clock insides. but you have the mental capabilities and mechanical prowess to pull it off. I'd love to see something like that and would consider puschasing something like that.
Jack, you've done it again. You forced me to Max Out My Lathe with that video and now you're making me create this illusion. I love it! Must see YT and Must Do project!
Yes. it's not as big as yours but my lathe is only a midi so conceptually it's the same. Had to do final assembly and sanding with a steady rest, too long for tailstock. Made in 3 sections, hollow to the bottom. We liked the wood so I only did beading in the joint areas. See it here photos.app.goo.gl/1eVBNwXAtoxfqNZJ9
