May I ask ? Why put a resin pour under pressure ? Vacuum would both degas and force the resin into voids because the gas that was in the voids wouldn't be there anymore.
Pressure shrinks all air bubbles to microscopic size that can’t be seen. Once the resin cures it stays that way. Vacuum removes some of the air but never all of it. And pressure is required to make the remaining air invisible. 👍🏻
Mixed feelings on this one. Love the wood grain, the black resin and the longer parts of the view. Sadly, I had to watch at a faster speed. Thank you trypophobia.😂
@@JackMackWoodturningWhy is it unnecessary? Genuine question here, I don't know much about woodworking and that seems like a sensible concern to have.
The clear resin was a sealer on the dowels to stop them being dyed by the black resin. The black was then poured in 4 pours (although it looks like 2 on the video) because pouring it all at once would cause too much heat during curing, and it would create cracks throughout the whole piece. 👍🏻
What was the purpose of covering the individual sticks in epoxy before putting them in the rubber bands? I'm trying to figure it out but got nothing lol
This piece was a very specific request from a customer.. they sure do like to put me through the wringer. This was an engineering nightmare. (I make it look easy in the video 🤣)
It's come up great and yeah you did make it look easy,, but don't forget, next time you're having problems with a project give me a shout, I'll be more than willing to point you in the right direction😂😂 😂😂😂
It was order by a customer as a decorative object.. others call it art.. but as I made it I don’t think of it as art. I think art should have a meaning that the artist s trying to convey to anyone who views it. This is not that. But it is an object designed to be viewed and enjoyed. 👍🏻
Beautiful piece, but had to watch this video on mute. There is a high-pitched noise in your shop that comes through the video and really hurts my ears for some reason. (I thought it was the lathe when you sped up the video but you can easily hear it at the 9:25 mark where you aren't turning at that point.)
The sound you are referring to is my dust extraction. Unfortunately, I can’t really operate without it. A lot of people tune in for the ASMR aspect of the video’s so I like to keep the audio authentic. If you aren’t keen on the sound of the workshop, mute the video and put your favourite playlist on. What sort of music do you like?
@@JackMackWoodturning Ahh, thanks for explaining. That's unfortunate. I too enjoy the sound of the tools, but something about that dust extractor affects me for some reason. Appreciate the suggestion, but I'll just have to selectively mute as I watch.
@trumpetbob15 No worries man. I think A lot of viewers do play music as they watch. I made a conscious decision not to use music as everyone has different tastes. I’ll have a look into some multi-band compression for the frequency of the extractor. It shouldn’t be too hard to isolate. Thanks for watching buddy 😉
This piece was a custom creation . The end product is exactly what the customer wanted. I would love for you tell me a more efficient way to make this item and it look exactly the same. Because I spent weeks trying to work it out and every different approach leads to so many other issues that would end up wasting the entire piece. Also, just as an important side note. There is no waste in my workshop. Everything is used or reused and nothing leaves the workshop unless it’s in the form of a finished piece of work.
It’s a custom order. The customer feels it has purpose. Which is why they paid me to make it. You could say that from their perspective it’s purposes is decoration and from my perspective it’s purposes to make an income and from your perspective it’s purpose is to entertain through the video. So that feels like 3 clearly defined purposes. It has also caused us to engage in conversation which could be purpose number 4

It can be repetitive circles/holes. Still, it's worth the feeling for some videos - yours included!
Put a clamp on the dowel before you bandsaw it, so it doesn't spin and take your finger into the blade

Hey Jack! Do you have any tips for turning spheres? I'm now woodturning for a good couple years but i never manages to get a perfect sphere

What was the purpose of covering the individual sticks in epoxy before putting them in the rubber bands? I'm trying to figure it out but got nothing lol
That’s a sealing coat to stop them sucking up the black resin and discolouring 👍🏻

OK, I'm confused...why did you do 2:11 and then knock the resin off the bottoms?
That’s a sealing coat. Wood is porous so without the sealing coat it would suck up the black resin and dye the wood.
