As an Indian-American immigrant myself, and having also lost a daughter, my first-born, highly educated beautiful child, I profoundly feel the loss of their son. You come to a new country with opportunities, you make a beautiful child, you spend your life savings on their education, they turn out brilliant with their whole shining future ahead of them, grandchildren, your happy retirement, and enjoyment of your children as adults, all gone in one tragic moment.
My deepest condolences to the parents of Varun. I truly feel your pain. I am so sorry for your loss. You are in my thoughts and I send you strength to see this through. From California. Rest in peace, Varun. ♥🙏

I knew Indian-Americans when I was in college in the 90's, and they are all bright and motivated. Much of this drive comes from their parents, who are heavily invested in their education and future. So it's terribly devastating when something like this happens. We just need to improve as a society when it comes to anger and conflicts and how to defuse these emotional outbursts that rapidly spiral out of control. Back in the "old days" two guys would just put up fists and fight when they came to a heated disagreement. Now, kids will grab a knife or gun to lash out at someone because their rage takes total control.
So sorry for your loss. You come here for better, seemingly safer life and suffer the unthinkable. Smh 😢
i’m a university student who is the child of Taiwanese-American immigrants and this news made me cry so hard. our parents come to this country to give us a bright future. most of us, the children, work hard because if the morals our parents gave us-and to see such a kind, brilliant young man with such a bright future ahead of him, treated so terribly, with such an evil sin committed against him, absolutely broke my heart.
I teared up when Varun’s mother started crying. What a senseless act. No one drops their kid off to college thinking that he will be randomly stabbed to death, unprovoked, by his roommate.
I am full of admiration for the grace and dignity of Varun’s parents in the face of such a horrific tragedy. God bless Varun and his family. My thoughts and prayers are with his poor suffering mother.

Stop sugarcoating. It was obviously a targeted attack, not random. He knew the victim's name and family and shared the same room for x period of time. If the victim and killer have never met before prior to the accident and know nothing of each other, then it ought to be classified as random attack. Stabbing is single target, not area of effect such as mass shooting. Obviously, victim had done something to provoke the killer.

That is one of the brutal questions that they can ever ask anyone who had lost a loved one. You do not need to market the tears to the audience by hurting the people who are already dead inside by loosing their loved one. Media should have some common sense and empathy

I am so sorry. He looked like a beautiful boy and these parents are the epitome of grace, even in their tragedy.
I have a 3 month old daughter. Grown man but I couldn't stop tears when I saw the mother recollecting her best moments with her son. Nothing that you do can bring the moments back.
TO the parents of Varun...as a parent and as a Purdue parent...you are in my familys thoughts and prayers. We will do our part in honoring him as well by doing our best to always be kind towards others and show compassion not only to those we know and love but also towards strangers. I will be donating this holiday season in his name.

I'm so sorry for your loss. Seem like a beautiful family. Psychological evaluation may have to be introduced at campuses for all boarding students after this tragedy.
Why would you wanna punish all millions of students for the dead of one (or few)? I just don't get this kind of American mentality where they introduce more and more regulations and laws to suffocate our already difficult lives in this country. If I spit outside on road in desperation, I am liable to be summoned by the police, and on.... what more restrictions on freedom of movement do you like to see in your life. Things happen , accept the reality of life and move on and make the culture better from inside out.

Many go to school and are paired with unknown roommates. I had 4 in college and always worried about this. All sleeping quarters should be secured, even from roommates.

The dorm pair systems are just awful in US. The university takes forever (or don’t) to allow students to switch rooms. The school just charges freshman so much so stay in dorms but could not even provide these kids a safe and suitable environment for school/work. No wonder tragedy happens.
The higher education system in the U.S. only cares about money and nothing else.

I am a 1987 Purdue Alumnus with a Liberal Arts degree. I cannot convey my grief over this enough. This is a terribly senseless act. Purdue has always been a safe campus compared to other large universities.

I'm willing to bet his roommate showed signs before he went to the university and his parents sent him anyhow. It wouldn't surprise me if they find out he was a troubled child. If they do, his parents need to be charged as well for not getting him help and for sending him to school knowing he has issues.. this was a senseless loss. Sending prayers to this family.

It’s a hostel and as parents, you have no idea with whom their child will be paired up with as roommates.. it was the university’s responsibility to evaluate every student who will be staying in hostel… And it’s not always that students share every small details about their lives with parents… about their roomates etc.. May be one when u have a child you will understand… atm u don’t have the brains or empathy to understand this tragedy.. so avoid putting comments which you will feel ashamed of a decade or two later….

You can't really choose your roommate in the school dorm so chances are you might end up with someone whose real character is hidden for as long as they want it to be.
