Fox and Rockshox are behemoths in the mountain bike suspension world. Forks from these brands work, and they work pretty darn well. So why bother with a fork designed and made by a small company out of Asheville, North Carolina?
Find out in Dan's review of the Cane Creek Helm, now offered in both coil and air sprung varieties.

About the reviewer:
160mm air sprung Helm on Ibis Mojo HD4
Body weight: 155 lbs
54 psi positive chamber
62 negative
High speed compression: all the way open
Low speed compression: two clicks in from open
Rebound: five clicks in
As an ex pro dh team mechanic, fantastic video, well explained with a full understanding of suspension, listen to this man people, he's a god
These forks look amazing! Love the idea of the internal volume reducer system. Great review!
Tremendous video Dan. You spoke like it was off the hip and yet we're so organized with your points that it seemed very well scripted. Talented on the bike and in front of the camera. Well done. The Helm looks pretty awesome, but I am wondering if the valving is not in a range that is as useful as other forks designed for the same application. You only ran the dampimg at one click from wide open on the low speed and fully open on the high speed compression?

Thank you for the thoughtful and thorough reply! I will marinate on this for a bit and let you know if other questions arise!
You know your shit man. No doubt. Great review. Digging the hair too👍🏻
Hi , i'm from Perú.
Please help me with this question :
It's necessary to have an specifict tool to put air in the Helm valve ??
I mean can i put air with a normal tool or is an specific for the Helm ??
It has to be a shock pump (as opposed to a tire pump). Something like this:
www.fanatikbike.com/products/rockshox-hp-shock-pump
Any brand of shock pump will do though.

Is there a way to ditch the vestigial QR like Maxle Stealth or Ka-Bolt? I hate QRs with a passion.
Not at this point, no :/
Mind if I ask why you don't like them? Just curious.
Thanks for watching!

What's the difference in ride characteristics etc. between the coil and the air? Normally coils can do with less tight seals and thus less friction/stiction, but how about this one? Is the coil a hybrid design like the old Marzocchis with air adjust?
You are correct regarding the reduced friction, and same goes for this fork. It also has a linear spring rate, so won't ramp up like the air spring does. The coil version is not a hybrid design, no, but we have a table on the spring page (www.fanatikbike.com/products/helm-coil-springs) that will tell you what size you need, and we can ship the proper one with it.
Let me know if you have any more Qs!

2 years later I wonder if you're still riding Helm? I just bought 160mm, because I'm done with Fox creaky crowns and will never buy another garbage Sram product till the day I die. Anyway, solid fork but tricky to tune because sadly high/low speed compression dials are utterly useless, you have to run them wide open. I crank them up for the long rides up, it's like rigid. So basically, all your tuning is internal spacers/air + - pressure. Rebound is key too, it's very sensitive to every click in a glorious way.
I personally am not, I just went to a Lyrik (first SRAM fork in like five years) after having been on a 36 for a bit. Our friend Finn runs the Helm on his Sensor (ruclips.net/video/08C3Yl2fDM4/видео.html) and his Force, and he rides harder than most. He's stoked on it.
I also ran the compression close to open. Only on trails with heavy compressions did I bump that up.
Best,

what about MUD FENDER? What fits on the market?
i got a new one for 380 :3 im so happy coil version
Good review but why so nervous? You know your stuff. Is there someone with a gun behind the camera?
Haha, I wasn't nervous! I was trying to get through a lot in as concise a way I could, maybe that's what came across as nerves. Being in front of the camera is rather different, definitely been a learning process.
Thanks for watching!

Problem with suppoeting this company is they out source all of their machining to Taiwan.
his vocal fry is like fingernails on a chalkboard
Thanks Aaron! Guess I need a lozenge before the next vid :D
Cheers,
Dan at Fanatik
I agree its awful. Vocal fry is that grating tone when speaking with low emphasis. Not ideal for speaking in a 9minute review lol.
Please don't lay forks down on the stanchions...it makes me feel bad, even though I know you haven't scratched them. Please.
