    Thanks for taking the time to make these videos. The Piper Malibu series are my favorite type of aircraft, so being a part of your missions is a great experience. One day I will have my own and take the time to document my flights to help others find the drive to achieve their own goals. I fly out of Glendale (KGEU) with an RV12, it’s no Malibu but is good old fashion stick and rudder. Thanks again!

    I'm not familiar with the G500Xi. I assume that is a smaller version of the G1000 system? Anyway, I didn't see the glideslope indicator near the HSI. Is that it in the upper right hand corner of the display? Beautiful aircraft and very professional IFR approach. I'm green with envy!

    I am no expert about your particular autopilot/Garmin system, but if I had to guess, you probably pressed the "approach" mode while you were still in GPS needles, and only then you switched to green needles. I suggest when you're vectored around a terminal area, and especially when told to expect an ILS and been issued radar vectors to go ahead and switch to green needles. You can expect that the clearance is def *not* going to be to track a GPS plotted course as part of your approach clearance, hence no reason to have to wait that long to switch that CDI. Once you have the correct needles up, and checked that you've got correct sensing (ie loc needle is on the side it should be, and G/S needle is on the portion it should be, preferably above you), correct identifier has been verified, and been issued an approach clearance which is within tolerance of what your autopilot can capture, only then press the approach mode in your A/P

      Hi Daniel. Thanks for the input. This is consistent with most of the responses I've received so I'll modify my procedure for vectored ILS's and see how it works...

    Thought you were supposed to wait until crossing the double bars at the end of the C2 before switching from tower to ground and contacting ground.

    • @MalibuFlyer
      @MalibuFlyer  5 лет назад

      You're absolutely right and thanks for pointing that out. I reviewed and noticed that I switched to ground, made contact, and received my taxi instructions, all before exiting the runway.

    • @GreenGuyDIY
      @GreenGuyDIY 5 лет назад

      @@MalibuFlyer You know it is natural to respond to the tower hand-off by switching over as soon as the tower announces "contact ground...". My law of Primacy kicks in because when I first learned to fly that is what we did because having turned off the runway meant you were clear. I am still having to get used to it.

  • @LimeyTX
    @LimeyTX 5 лет назад

    You mentioned that when you switched the G500 to ILS instead of GPS it suddenly pitched up looking for the glide slope. I don't know for sure but I think you should have turned to the "Green Needles" before you activated the approach, as soon as you were given vectors. In fact, and again, I can't be sure, but I think there is a setting in the GTN750 that automatically switches to the "green needles" for the approach. If you are being vectored and have an ILS setup and altitude hold engaged, it should, once the approach is armed, turn on to the localizer and then intercept the glide slope and follow it down.
    I definitely suggest you sort that out in good VFR at home base because I noticed a similar thing happened on another ILS approach and, in my view, a pilot flying IFR alone needs to have absolutely as much going for them as possible and that means not having to fumble with the AP and GTN750 during critical stages of an approach. Distractions at that stage can be disastrous.
    I enjoy your videos, and this comment is intended to be helpful and is not in any way meant to be mean or unkind.

    • @MalibuFlyer
      @MalibuFlyer  5 лет назад +1

      Thanks for the comment. I'm not sure if switching the CDI to VLOC mode (green needles) on the G500 before activating the approach mode on the AP would change anything in this case. As you can see @ 6:55, the Flight Director immediately commands the climb which tells me that it's coming from the 750. It's important to note that even though the 750 is in VLOC mode, it's the CDI setting on the G500 that determines what is driving the AP. You've inspired me to get to the bottom of it...

    • @LimeyTX
      @LimeyTX 5 лет назад

      @@MalibuFlyer I don't think I was clear. The GTN 750 is primed for the ILS, but the G500 and consequently the AP is set to GPSS. When you change the G500 to ILS instead of flying the heading and assigned altitude, it starts to follow the ILS (that's what you told it to do) but the ILS is showing you are below the glideslope. You know that is because you haven't intercepted yet, but the AP has now been told to follow the ILS and thus tries to capture the glideslope.
      So I surmise that the correct procedure when being vectored is to be in HDG and ALT mode with "green needles" and then engage APR when cleared for the approach.
      Alternatively, if you are cleared to a point on the approach course, maybe the FAF then, if you have the GTN 750 set to automatically switch modes, you can fly GPSS to the FAF and the GTN 750 will figure out when to turn the needles green and intercept.
      I stress that this is from my reading of the GTN manual and not from practical experience, but it sure seems logical to me.

    • @N1120A
      @N1120A 5 лет назад

      With these various ILS AP issues, have you considered sticking with RNAV LPV approaches when you are doing autopilot coupled approaches?

    • @MalibuFlyer
      @MalibuFlyer  5 лет назад +2

      @@N1120A I don't think this particular issue is any reason to not do coupled ILS approaches. In reviewing the synchronized raw video, I see that as soon as I switched the CDI, the AP canceled ALT hold and went into GS mode for exactly 3 seconds then cancelled. I'm looking into it.
