  • Another rambling video of me going over the steps of refreshing the rusty fuel tank from my 1983 Mk1 Volkswagen GTI, using Simple Green, Evaporust, POR-15 fuel tank sealer. This took place over a week and still requires 4 days to cure completely.
Fuel tank vapors are dangerous and highly explosive, these videos are not a complete guide and are intended to be for entertainment and documenting the procedures I find useful.

Great series on MK1 FI stuff. Im restoring a '79 scirocco and am dealing with similar issues. Interesting re: the loos fuel filter. I pulled the tank earlier this week and heard what I ma sure is something rattling around in there. Probly the same thing..

Thanks for your great informative video! I'm starting on my 81 scirocco fuel tank , it has a lot of rust in as well but also black gas sludge that smells like paint stripper. The sending unit is just rusted away. I guess I will try the evaporated never tried it before. So it's safe to submerge fuel pump in it? Do you fush gas through it after?

I have unseized fuel pumps with evaporust before. be careful but what worked for me after determining by hooking up a battery to the ground of the fuel pump then just briefly touching the positive to hear and feel if the pump spins. I mount the pump carefully in a vice to avoid crushing the housing, the pump will torque itself away from you uncontrollably if not secure. leave it submerged in evaporust and do the above check periodically, rinse it out with water then compressed air then use WD-40 to flush anything else out, I will use a penetrating fluid after that checking periodically that the pump works electrically during each flush. If it works and you install it, the pump can still be a risk and can fail so be careful if the pitch of the pump changes and gets louder then swap in a new one. So far I have had good luck with mine, detach and blow out all your fuel lines and check and drain your fuel filter (tank side down, opposite of the arrow on the filter) into a glass jar periodically to check for contamination. Keep extra filters on hand. If the tank is that bad you need to clean and check every part in your CIS system, evaporust can help with all of it but the residual fuel will contaminate the fluid and reduce its effectiveness.

What type of fuel pum/level sending unit did you use?

I used the stock original fuel pump and sending unit, I put them in Evaporust since they were corroded and the fuel pump was seized from 20 years of old fuel and underground storage. hope that helps and thanks for watching!
