My brother used to help me with a lot of model painting. He was never into playing 40k but he grew up on Airfix kits and loved painting especially vehicles. This was absolutely his bag. I never had a problem building drop pods. I usually build it in 3 sub assemblies. 1) The "Starfish." The base and doors. 2) The "Claw." The wings and engine. Dry fitted onto the guts and the starfish. 3) The "Guts." The center console and the harnesses. Very important not to glue the sub assemblies to each other for ease of painting. I build the sub assemblies really tight so they friction together. That way, I can take the claw off and easily take out the guts with a little twist and reattach the claw to have it represent a dreadnought drop pod.
Honestly a drop pod would be a pretty interesting inclusion for kill teams they'd need to greatly reduce the amount of marines you get, but it would be pretty cool to have an offical scenarios where the drop pod comes down inside the middle of a board, beyond that I would say that extreme rust doesn't really work for me, drop pods can get damaged but the mechanicus have such a religious view of technology I have a hard time believing they have time to give oil blessings to launch the pod, but they can't spare some fresh paint for it, space marine battle damage unless the vehicle is supposed to be long dead should stick with freshly damaged, as it really doesn't make narrative sense that there equipment isn't taken care of, particularly when you look at droppods, which are vehicles that will spend the most time out of any of them inside there vessels able to be worked on
had a work colleague that built one of these. The middle "radar" like table. He painted in such a way that it actually looked like a live green radar screen. Looked awesome.
Thanks for the video. I never purchased one of these, back in 3rd edition there was no model but there was a rule that simulates them in the book. If your army consisted of only infantry and dreadnoughts you could put your whole army in reserves and deploy them using the big blast template and scatter dice.
That´s not glue (3:12) you´re using cement, they are two very different products. Glue hold two (or sometimes more) pieces together for dear life. Cement fuses the parts together, turning pultiple parts into one. (Also only works with certain types of plastic)
Can anyone tell me what he is using at 2:48 to smooth the consol of the drop pod ? WOuld be very useful for some 3D print figurines I have. Thanks in advance !
I think your weathering is spot on. These things, when deployed on the field, have just gone through atmospheric re-entry. They will be scorched, burned, tore up and beaten to heck and back by 1000’s of degrees of heat and atmosphere. As a reference, I use pictures of the Apollo command module just after re-entry when painting things like this. For added flavor, you can add some black/grey charring effects to the bottom where both the atmo and retro’s have scorched the bottom.
I remember mass producing a bunch of drop pods during one years' super bowl. It is a bear of a kit, but looks and feels so cool when it's done. I've done up 9 of them and 2 dreadnought pods XD (used to be the dread could just ride in the normal pod grumble grumble). It's fun to see newer folks discovering these older units that have been so iconic! Fleet based chapter orbital strikes forever!
Good video. Built correctly the doors should lock nicely. I built mine with one wing and "seat" magnetised, and base with doors coming off completely so I can disassemble for ease of transport (4L RUBox)
My first Imperium army was Blood Angels when they got their 7th ed codex, and I've never been good at the game I just build models that look neat. I remember buying 2 of these and hated assembling them. I was newer to hobbying so I didn't sand shit like you did, but man was it so satisfying just plunking one down in the middle of a battle field. I still remember doing a chaotic as heck 3 way battle with friends where they dropped down in the middle of the IG artillery that was winning the match til then and just unleashing hell with the Melta. One of the drop pods broke in a move and is now just a really cool terrain piece I use. I'll never recommend anyone build the model but I love seeing them.
i don't feel like i experience long dry times with the Tamiya Extra Thin Cement Glue, it seems like most things stick right away and don't move again for me. I've never been a big fan of superglue on plastic models, but your work is very good so i'd never suggest you to change what you're doing. It clearly works for you. Great build, i've always thought drop pods were kinda cool but i'm not a Space Marine collector / player.
Tamiya extra thin dries pretty fast, especially if you clamp it down. I still will let it cure for 24 hours before sanding, although I typically use it to fuse large panels together instead of as an all-purpose glue. Tamiya extra thin is not actually glue, it melts the plastic and fuses it instead of binding things together, it's typically used for tank/plane models and Gundams that have seam lines that need to disappear.
Love the videos man! I think that a good way to get people hyped about your custum terrain stls would be to do a battle report video playing with some you painted. The goblin tunnels would be a great place for a templar vs tyranid match
Top tip from a knights player; Use super glue like tac welds, and plastic glue like spot welding. Apply plastic glue, but leave a few small gaps for a few drops of super glue. The super glue dries fast, creating a strong and firm bond to allow the large areas of plastic glue time to dry.

I built and hand painted 3 of these in 2012 with my first army (Crimson Fists). I dont recall them being that hard, i know i left out the harnesses in the last 2. One was for a metla dreadnought, the other two for combi-melta sternguard and Pedro Kantor
I built 2 of these for my ultramarines. I agree they're tough to build right on the first go. However, I did paint the inside parts up before closing it up. I used mini magnets to hold the doors closed.
9:00 yeah about that, maybe paint it from the bottom around to edge with the black/purple/blue shade, you know, when metal gets high temperature this dark rainbow appears :>
Yeah, I remember this being a pain in the ass. Some of it is an unavoidable consequnce of the drop pods pentagon design, but my guess is that stuff like the difficult sprue connections and overly tight fitting parts was likely a product of the early days of GW CAD. I also remember plastics of this era being noticably harder than earlier kits, so until you got used to that there could be mishaps. Im pretty sure the first actual drop pod kit I built I just rubber banded like mad until it dried and everything mostly kept itself lined up properly, except for one door that was a little wonky, but it just required a little extra nudge to click into place when I closed it.
Look forward to doing this kit. Creating narrative campaign for Kill Team. kitbashing poxwalkers into arbitis for corrupted cops. As nurgle chaos gate opens in a hive city. 2 kill teams drop pod into the city to try and save it.

the drop pod is actually genius. It's an absolutely fantastic practise model for painting vehicles. It's got plenty of detail while not being overwhelming, it's got tons of big open surfaces for various weathering effects and to practise using water slide decals if you so choose, and it's probably not gonna be your most treasured model, so messing up isn't the end of the world.
I straight-up snipped off the seatbelt to wing connections, then glued all the wings to the propeller thing before just fitting it to the petal. The doors were much better off that way I found.
I think you did an amazing job on the weathering, in fact, I'd have love to see heat striations on the bottom half of the heat shield it may take coming into the atmosphere.
I just need to warn anybody watching this. Learn from my mistakes building Gundams: *Tamiya Extra Thin Cement is NOT glue.* It's an acetone-based cement that actually melts the plastic it touches and fuses it together. DO NOT use it on any surface that you want to be visible, because it will warp and melt any plastic it touches. If you're mounting small detail pieces, only use a tiny amount of cement far away from the edges, or use super glue.
Drop pods are cool, and I really like this paint job. But, I will say this about DP in general. First off, the tolerances are so tight that a layer of paint will keep it from properly closing. My best DP was the one where I shaved down the doors first. You just scrape a thin layer of plastic from the bit of the door the will touch the frame. You actually need to scrape off quite a bit. Then you can drill a hole in the side of the door, and one in the frame and pop in little magnets. This will keep the doors closed nicely, but not too strongly. Also, I like to leave out all the interior stuff, except the weapon. As far as I'm concerned, the Space Marines just use magnet boots and ride down like men. Also, that harness thing in the middle means they cant all pour out in one direction if they need to.
I own 2 drop pods for my Dark Angels army. The building process was.... tumultuous at best. I've never been so relieved to have finally been able to align those doors and get them to close properly.
super glue often times seems to fail after a while for some reason. A combo works with super glue to set it quickly and plastic glue for long term strength.
3:55 this is objectively untrue. superglue is actually brittle in nature and could fracture due to impact. proper plastic cement actually dissolves the plastic and fuses the 2 parts together, it just may take longer for the cement to dry properly, giving the false impression that it's weaker.
I’ve always thought it was the landspeeder cause I hated making those. In a game one time i had a landspeeder die so I rolled to see if it exploded it didn’t so I went to pick it up and all the pressure and stress that was held together by cheap glue gave out and it quite literally exploded. My opponent and I agreed whatever got hit got killed or injured and we kept the remaining pieces as a permanent decoration on the board.
I've built and used a few drop pods in my time and I've found over time the plastic expanded and the doors wouldn't hold up on their own after about 6 months so magnetising became necessary but hope yours holds out. I suppose the Australian hot weather didn't help much though.
It doesn't require magnets to to keep the doors closed, but it does take the wings to be perfectly aligned to allow friction to keep the doors closed. I was able to get one of the 5 I built over the years that didn't need magnets.
I bought a second-hand army for real cheap, the guy had been trying to build a Dark Angels army but gave up. The lot contained 2 Stormravens, 3 Landraiders and 10… yes TEN droppods, among everything else.
Lore-wise, I've always been a fan of drop pods, and they, plus some video games, are what has colored my impressions of Space Marines, which is why I complain so much about Space Marines.😊 To me, especially prior to the Primaris Marines, the Astartes were always supposed to be limited in numbers. There were few enough of them that single battles could potentially wipe out a Chapter, and even their most injured had to be preserved, by putting them in Dreadnoughts. This is why I gripe when Space Marines get bikes, but Guard get horses. It's not a resource thing; GSC steal theirs from PDFs, so mortal soldiers have them, and Orks can build them out of empty beer cans, and kazoos, so they aren't hard to make, or maintain. They also don't need Predators, when Guard often seemed to lack a dedicated anti-tank lascannon turret variant. Space Marines don't show up in 2000 pt forces, anywhere but the table top; a big ship drops a squad, or maybe two, in where these elite infantry can break the back of the enemy, and be gone shortly afterwards, to head on to the next battle. When a big force of them show up, with tanks, dreads, and more, I know it's fine, but it's not what I want to/am accustomed to seeing. Anyway, the image of a beleaguered Guard regiment, just about to break under the menace of this week's enemy, just to have a drop pod slam into the earth disgorge its contents, and have these Hero Marines murder the enemy HQ with rocket-propelled grenades, and then carve them up with chain swords, is what I like to envision, so good work!
If you think that was a pain to build, do one of the original Forgeworld kits! I have both the Marine pod and the Dread pod with a Deathstorm waiting to be built. A lot of trimming and hole filling, parts to be re-aligned, all the fun stuff from forge world kits!! Being a collector/painter only, (only ever played 1 game) I'm glad to have them but would never do another, though I will have to have a go at the plastic version at some time.
Looks good but could have used some burn marks from the base upwards to make it seems like it's been through the atmosphere a few times. The way it looks now just makes it seem like it's been sitting on a battlefield for ages but never used.
Get a scratch brush from a hobby supply store, gsw has some, and that you can change between nylon and silicone brissles in the one brush, you can even get some brass brissles for sculpting
do you scratch the model or just the paint job? I've never tried because I'm always worried I'll change my mind half way and be stuck with a bad weathering job
Want to add them to my collection too, but I think I’m more into bringing a storm Raven, now that all the Primaris Dreadnoughts can be transported from that
Yeah but drop pods can DS from turn one which makes em pretty scary for ur opponent. I have two drop pods and I use one as a dreadnought drop pod. I've had some great success dropping a Dev squad plus techmarine and contemptor into my opponents shit
Going through re-entry doesn't trash spaceships dude. Our old space shuttles from the last century went up and down dozes of times and don't look like that. Also space ships don't rust.

I think you did an amazing job on the weathering, in fact, I'd have love to see heat striations on the bottom half of the heat shield it may take coming into the atmosphere.
Ah yes, my 40K version of a ‘Nam flashback in video form. Thanks Jay, thanks for opening up old wounds….
Dude, honestly i love watching your videos sooo much.
Helldiver's inbound. Prepare for hell dive
I hade 5 of these at one time. Loved them.
I own 2 drop pods for my Dark Angels army. The building process was.... tumultuous at best. I've never been so relieved to have finally been able to align those doors and get them to close properly.
Drop pod + Internus Marines = total destruction.
Love this combo, might steal the idea lol
super glue often times seems to fail after a while for some reason. A combo works with super glue to set it quickly and plastic glue for long term strength.
I've literally got one of these in the post. Great timing!
The drop pod was one of my first models and had really no issues with it, the doors even closed properly without issue for me
I might do what I always wanted to do and have a drop pod army. I never picked up any since they didn't carry primaris marines in the beginning
I recently built mine. The only problem i had with it was that the 3rd sprue was a slightly lower quality plastic, but it was pretty fun to build
As an Iron Fist player, I used to love those drop pots in 9th.
"MOST frustrating.."
*Laughs looking at wonky StormEagle on shelf*
I've built and used a few drop pods in my time and I've found over time the plastic expanded and the doors wouldn't hold up on their own after about 6 months so magnetising became necessary but hope yours holds out. I suppose the Australian hot weather didn't help much though.
I have never heard of Chipping Medium before, but it's something I'm going to be looking into now in order to make my Orks look better
The drop pod is right up there with the land speeder in terms of frustration.
I have just started mine, and it really is a nightmare.... the doors do go up and down just fine, but scrape up the paint on the floors.
I've got a pod in my backlog and I love the chipping effect. I think I'm going to try it out asap! :)
It doesn't require magnets to to keep the doors closed, but it does take the wings to be perfectly aligned to allow friction to keep the doors closed. I was able to get one of the 5 I built over the years that didn't need magnets.
I love the pulp fiction reference at the end 😊
Oh boy, i sure do hope there's a way for me to get into battle and do my duty for the emperor!
The Venerable Drop Pod:
Just finished it Last Weekend! Haha, super nice model witch can also be used as Terrain, I Like it
For CQB Drop pods are essentials. It will allow you absolutely WREK Taus and Aeldari.
Ah the drop pod. The classic way to send a space marine into the thick of it.
Those doors look like such a pain in the bum to work with.
i remember when i masked up all the wing sections so i can spray them :D it was such a long task
You joined the Drop Pod club. It's a pain to build indeed 😂
My has two of these that he brought when they were released.
Man nothing beat two squads of SMs popping out right where you don’t want them.
My Heresy Nightlords are using the drop pod assault right of war.. I need so many drop pods..
nice one, weathering is on point
If you think that was a pain to build, do one of the original Forgeworld kits! I have both the Marine pod and the Dread pod with a Deathstorm waiting to be built. A lot of trimming and hole filling, parts to be re-aligned, all the fun stuff from forge world kits!! Being a collector/painter only, (only ever played 1 game) I'm glad to have them but would never do another, though I will have to have a go at the plastic version at some time.
for main i used a litte bit mor wearering, using as reference, real sapce capsules if you look theme the look more toasty,
Looks good but could have used some burn marks from the base upwards to make it seems like it's been through the atmosphere a few times. The way it looks now just makes it seem like it's been sitting on a battlefield for ages but never used.
So far for me, most frustrating to build conventionally as in no Magnets, just what's in the Box and citadel glue - is the wraithknight
@@CheddarDrip just the paint, but you got to use it with chipping medium or it wont do anything
@@tadhgmcelligott3693 yeah but you are very limited on what units you can bring in a drop pod
I would like x10000000 times more just for that Tombstone reference alone!!!
Ghost ark or any necron model for that matter. Years Ago I built a ghost ark and when it was done I didn’t build anything for months.
I didn't find that hard to build, just loads of sub-assemblies. The original Monolith kit though? That monstrosity haunted my dreams for a long time.
Heyyyyy, I just got my drop pod a week or two ago too! Was gonna make it light up and everything too
"Chonk in the Bonk as the cool kids say"
Never heard anybody ever say that. Even the cool kids.
As someone who had 3 of these magnetised (the wings are only fixated by magnets so i can dissamble it for transportation) i didnt found it that bad :D
This one is a mild pain. You want serious inkiry? The origonal Sisters Exorcist. With the metal parts badly molded.
Going through re-entry doesn't trash spaceships dude. Our old space shuttles from the last century went up and down dozes of times and don't look like that. Also space ships don't rust.
I Honestly Didn’t Know Whether or Not GW Had These
Amazing Classic
Thank You For Your Continued Great At
I really enjoyed building my drop pod, enough that I bought a couple more to make a drop pod list. Maybe I just like fussy kits. Good amount of weathering, not sure about weathering to a rust colour, but hey its your model and it looks great regardless.
I like how he felt the need to blur it the box in the thumbnail as if any vehicle in warhammer looks remotely like that sillhoette.
