Many years ago I interviewed at GW for a job as a mould maker for Forge World. For the majority of the interview I was not asked about my mould making experience or what the procedure was when planning a mould. Nope, every few minutes the two interviewers would proceed to repeat the line "We have to stress that you are not an artist". Cheers guys I've been making moulds professionally for over a decade (at that time), I don't need reminding "I'm not an artist". I began to ask questions about their procedures and practices, just to get an idea of what moulds I would be making day to day. I never got an answer. Near the end I was asked how I would go about making a mould of one of their tanks, without being given an image of the tank in question. I asked if I could see an image so I could think of a working plan, I was denied and told "You won't always get to see the model before it's sent to you for moulding" then one of them dropped the clanger "We run our shop like a film studio".......The fuck you do. In the end I drew up a rough plan using a production standard to conserving silicone and making sure moulds are defect free. I was told that this went against company standard and wouldn't be cleared. I "had to follow their rules". I admittedly got annoyed and said "well if you'd tell me your rules instead of having me walk in blind, then the mistake would not be made". They protested, proclaimed that "all I had to do was ask". This really pissed me off as I'd asked several times and been denied information every step of the way. They then asked where I learnt to make moulds, I told them of my training, where I'd worked and who has trained me. They dismissed the 40 year industry veteran who took me under his wing back when I started with a nonchalant "Oh yea we know him. He worked here for a time, couldn't cut it. Wasn't dedicated to the company". This was the final nail for me, in the end, after two hours of dealing with them I excused myself from the interview. On my way out of the building I was approached by someone on the GW staff who I knew from my local store, he had actually helped get me the interview in the first place through some work I'd done for his store at the time. He was pissed, but not surprised. I reached out to my old mentor a while later and he explained that FW use cheap silicone and don't maintain moulds beyond basic checks for heavy degradation. Mould makers are not allowed to modify how sculptures are broken down for moulding or even have any input on aspects of the design to ease mould making. They are forever reminded that they are not "the artist" and denied any information until the last minute. It's all about speed and cost cutting and not about getting good quality moulded parts to the customer. It's annoying as the FW kits are some of the best GW produce....sad their attitude is a detriment to that.s
@@Goofybird-l2j that's the really annoying thing. The resin itself isn't low quality. It's loaded with filler powder don't get me wrong, but not the level of the "Finecast" resin which was so heavily loaded it was like chalk. It's their treatment of moulds that have led to the "low quality" feel. That's why if you're lucky enough to get a model that's an early pull from the moulds then you're going to be having a great time with it. Worst kit I ever had on my desk was a warhound titan that must have been a casting from a 14th generation remould as so many parts were misaligned in areas that were not along the mould seams. Awful experience you had. As far as I'm concerned, speaking as someone who made models to make moulds from, you mould makers are bloody artists in your own right!
Yeah to find people don't like it is odd it's the quintessential dakka dread a near 1:1 rip off of more established mech designs but looks like it would float. 😅
Same, except for one of them which the kitbash his video actually checked off: digitigrade legs, those cool, funky, three-segment legs that you see on some mechs like some of the ones from Titanfall
@@celestethabest I was gonna say the same thing, the daredeo looks a lot like a high gothic Stalker from Battletech. Its like my favorite kind of mech: top heavy and a little goofy.
Dang, I didn't know the Deredeo received so much flak, I thought it was the type to dish it out instead. I actually like how it's a chunky, walking gun platform. I can't wait to see how you modify it.
That looks fantastic! The legs really make it, good call. Well worth it. You've got one stompy walker there that looks straight out of Battletech. I love it.
Chicken legs look SO good on the Dorito! You could sell STLs of that one Sentinel part you used easy. Also love your risk-taking on the checks! A doubly inspiring vid.
Jay, we can really see how much you’ve improved in the past couple years with videos like this. These are seriously next level conversions, and it makes for insane content
Years ago when I first came across the Deredeo, I really thought it was hideous. Mainly due to the “uni-boob” bikini front- it kind of looks like the bow of a boat. Even though I know that the heads on Dreadnoughts aren’t the actual Marine’s heads, the illusion of the Deredeo always makes me think of a shallow iron lung type tank with just the patient’s head sticking out of a hole in the top. Luckily, over time the Deredeo has grown on me, and I can appreciate the different design knowing that it’s purpose isn’t the same as a Contemptor or Leviathan. And it’s about two weeks from being available in plastic, so I’ll be able to afford one without going broke. Great job on yours- I love the conversion and paintwork!
I love the addition of the bird legs, definetly pays off in both scale and dynamics. I might have used some BT bits to tie it further into my BT force, but the decals suffice well enough. Great job on the checker board! I'll more than likely be using this as inspiration for my 30k Iron Hands.
The model looks great. Very nice job, Jay. I am a beginner, in contrast, when assembling my models. Kit bashing is not something I do, but many other hobbyists, such as yourself, do kitbash. Your models look great, as a result. Keep up the great work you do.
I personally love the stock deredeo dreadnought-the silly goofy wacky silhouette gives the vibes that I love from mechas and robots-but the kit bash improves this by a large amount. Good job
I'm not a big fan of checkerboards but that model now looks absolutely gorgeous and I respect the flex. I wish I had the skill, patience and steady hands to build something like that. Good job!
I love coffee in the morning and you know what I like more than coffee? Is watching your vids while having my coffee. I never played Warhammer or own any of GW models. I don’t think I will not likely ever play the game. I have no clues to where to start. But I truly enjoy your content, your talent and skills. Thank you.
Objectively the best Dorito Dread I've ever seen. Legs really change up the proportions/silhouette. I've always thought it looks like a toilet but this version is the sh*t 😂
excellent conversion! I've been pondering doing some sort of Deredeo conversion myself but I was focused on replacing the arms with something more normal, like what other dreads or knights have. Hadn't considered the legs at all. If I ever get around to the project I'll for sure have to figure out something for the legs as well
Add the blue'd barrel from shooting until near overheating ! Maybe even make it look hot still just to add some more pop to those giant cannons. Love it bro keep it up!
I absolutely LOVE the kitbash! You're right, it TOWERS over every other Dreadnought! And while the paint is fantastic, the yellow checkers feels more Iron Hands than Black Templar
I'd love to know more about your paint brush selection and brush care! I have a challenge keeping those points you use for the details of the checkers and eyes.
I like the Deredeo and your mod for the same reason. This Dreadnought has a certain Metal Gear vibe to it, a bit closer to like the Armored Core genre of mecha design than the Grim Dark space fantasy coffins of most Dreads. Your kitbash really helps bring that out!
That's a great color for an armored vehicle! Although I enjoy the Deredeo design, I think you really improved it with the Sentinel legs! Would love to see some more detail on the gun barrels though, maybe some black soot or some metallic shine...
The black on that torso was beautiful. It drew the focus, giving a very cold menacing feel, perfect for Black Templars. I would have avoided the chequres and added colour by use of purity seals on the auto-cannons instead. Fantastic kitbash regardless.
Deredeo is based on Contemptor chassis with extra adjustments and reshaped hull to compensate comically large yet terrific guns. He's a walking nightmare for any aircraft in 30k and a decent shooting platform in 40k
Love the conversion here. I too love dreadnoughts or any other big stompy robots, and I think the point about them being able to withstand the recoil and motion of the massive torsos is probably what throws me off the most. I really couldn't explain why it bugged me, but I think this video hits the nail on the head. I love the legs and think they solve the visual issues I had with it. Now to figure out how to replicate the same effect on my Leviathans too.
Great kitbash and paint job. I paint black in a similar way. I call it X-Men black. If you watch the old cartoon all the black is highlighted with blue. I think it looks great.
I love the Deredeo, it looks like a big, heavy weapons platform, dug in and launching volleys of missiles whilst loosing lascannon shots. It reminds me of a 40k-ified Madcat from Mechwarrior. Maybe it's just nostalgia, I played a lot of Space Crusade back in the day, and the Deredeo is clearly modelled off of the Dred from that.

That was such a nice touch adding in the legs!! That checkerboard looks amazing!!! Thanks gents fantastic as always!!!
the fact that this came out as i ordered my own deredeo, cant wait to steal all of this

2 space marines having a conversation
"Heavy flamer? In this economy?"
Brother, get the flamer.
