Match Fishing - River Trent Fiskerton - Nottingham Piscatorial Society

  • I'm back on the banks of the River Trent this week match fishing the Nottingham Piscatorial Society Fiskerton stretch with the Yorkshire Bandit Angling Club.
After my first visit to the NPS Fiskerton stretch last year, I knew that this length of the River Trent varies greatly in depth with the upper pegs seeing 18ft and the lower ones around 6ft so a wide variety of tackle would be needed to cover all eventualities. I also wished last year that I'd taken a heavy feeder rod setup to hold in the powerful flows across as I felt there were some chub under the far bank trees on on that peg that I was unable to target such is the power of the Trent, so this year I made sure I had that piece of kit with me. If a barbel happened to come along, this rod would be equipped with tackle strong enough to stop them.
Outright barbel fishing on the River Trent is a big gamble during a match so the plan was to put out some bait to tempt them but also to fish for bream, perch and chub on the worm or pellet and if I felt brave I'd stick a boilie on.
The backup plan was to loose feed maggots and fish various float lines for the roach and other silver fish using either whip, stick float or waggler depending on the conditions.

I really appreciate the way you outline your approach and discuss varying your tactics. As a very average angler myself, I learn a great deal from you and have been able to improve my performances in my clubs over 60’s matches( a bigger group of elderly degenerates you would ever wish to meet). Thanks very much.

Anthony that's brilliant that you've managed to pick up some tips and up your game, getting the odd place or two makes it worth the extra effort and means you're catching more fish so, it's a win win. We are all getting older on the natural circuit, but there are some youngsters who prefer catching silvers to carp and I always try to help them out by donating my old tackle, you just can't beat river fishing for pure excitement.

Thanks Stan, it was a long overdue win but I'm chipping away at the league places after a poor start to the season. I'm out at Linton this weekend and on the Don the week after. The rain is getting more frequent here too but so far the rivers are in good condition, just hope they don't flood out in the next couple of weeks.

There's a time and a place for big hooks Robert, and this venue I know the fish run big, much bigger in fact than those fish I had out in the match but they rarely feed through the day, feeling safer at night. Rivers are awesome and the Trent is truly magical, as you say, you never know what's gonna bite next I hope one day you get the opportunity to experience the power of a double figure barbel. Thanks John. Rob had a cracking day on the Barnsley water a couple of weeks back just after the 1st downpours which freshened the rivers up and put a bit of colour in, he had 35+lb, some nice chub, 5 big bream, 10 big skimmers and a bunch of silvers. Yes quite possibly a pike that killed the swim and then either took a small fish I'd hooked or I hooked it inadvertently on the whip at the end.

My river net is 4m long though so all the fish were well out into the water and everything swam off strong at the end including all the little uns.
