Slight editing blunder at the end of the video, around a minute or so of black screen and low music - there's nothing more to see so when i say, "Until the next one, Tight Lines, that's the end"
Unlucky John, dont get to despondent, on another day your tactic's may have been the right one, keep going mate i'm sure your day will come. if it isn't dogs its water skiers, you never know next week it could be a topless Babe on on passing boat !! Thanks for another great video John. Ian in the Borders
Thanks Anthony, it's good to know. I really appreciate each and everyone of you guys that watch, like and comment on the videos, without your support, I wouldn't be able to continue, you all keep me motivated to bring you more.
I felt you were flustered from the off John, those days are so frustrating and we all have them, you are normally all ready way before the all in, the river fished well looking at the sheets. keep em coming please....
Certainly was, they drew it late for some reason, it was supposed to be at 8.30 and was gone 9 by the time I pulled my peg, with that, the drive to the venue and then had to get the gates open as they were locked, (good job I had a key as nobody else did),. it didn't leave a whole lot of time for setup. More to come yet. 👍
The weed & boats were a pain in my peg as well John, lost 3 decent roach & a big perch in first hour & then only caught small roach & dace. Ed Bridon to my right had 25lb+ & Tom Pickering 14lb+ to my left both on pole, fished maggot then caster, hemp & tares, both caught quality roach. I went on tip to find some bonus fish as was well behind in zone, which was a mistake but I should have tried the waggler a lot earlier. Felt they were further out but had same problem with steep banking, you live & learn. Was a pleasure meeting you at the draw & keep producing these great videos!! The water skier didnt get up as far as us, hopefully fell in the knob!!
Hi Steven, good to know I wasn't the only one suffering, I feel your pain 😉. Amazingly I didn't lose any fish for once! I can't understand why they moved out further and others caught on the pole all day but it's definitely one to put in the lessons learned box. I tried waggler early on but only half depth, should have set it up full depth from the off. Hindsight eh!
John I know presentation is key ,but those fish were having it mate waggler should have been the way ,matchmen these days are obsessed with the pole ,anyway great vid and thanks again mate best wishes
Nah, I'm over it but you know what it's like Gaz, demoralising at the time, once I started catching on the waggler I felt rejuvenated. Never a waste of time these matches, just a lesson learned on the way to being a more knowledgeable angler.
great vid again onwards and upwards john different day different tactics we all learn everyday we go head up and do it in the next quali match top angler
Just found this channel, excellent stuff. I used to live in Selby and recognise a fair few venues that I used to fish like the Aire and Southfield, not in matches, I only briefly dabbled in club matches when I was a junior with Wheatsheaf AC at Sherburn in Elmet. Looking forward to going through your videos even though I only really game fish now, tight lines 👍
Have to admit, Pole presentation for bait, you can't beat it. Any flowing rivers like this, I prefer rod & line waggler fishing. Much quicker. Excellent video's and well presented.
Thanks Matthew, I just tell it like I see it, the good times, the disappointments... mostly the disappointments, but I hope you enjoy them none the less. 👍
That’s was real a quality video. You were up against some real seasoned quality river anglers. So yes maybe you could have gone on the waggler line earlier but I think you put up a really good show. Keep on trying good luck favours the brave
Yes these matches aren't easy to qualify on but if you don't challenge yourself.you'll never improve. Of course you need a good drawing arm and a lot of luck, sometimes we make our own luck and I didn't get to manufacturing it until 3.5hrs in. Lesson learned. Glad you enjoyed the video David, tight lines 🎣
Another great well made video bud, again unlucky, very hard to win at places which you don't fish often but you did well regardless. Let's hope the next one is in the bag 😉
The pole looks hard work to me and very time consuming, I think you could have gone closer on the old rod reel from the start. Good luck next year, John
nice looking venue that... and the weights were relatively fair not the usual '35lb off one peg everyone else 2.6lb silver' ... thats proper match fishing when you are working hard for every bite.... hindsight from my armchair.... maybee slowly bring your loosefeed closer and get them faster/easier on 5m whip to hand..? and the quiet moments try the worm down the edge for bonus perch maybee.... but enjoyable vid to watch nice one..
I thought about whip and an edge line but last year I tried both those things on a similar weed fringed peg on the Aire and they weren't successful, that's not to say there wasn't any perch in that peg. I take your point about the feed, something I often try to do is bring them closer, I didn't have time to set the whip up as well but could have fished shorter on the pole but the bites just weren't there at 11m, some of that feed fell inside 11m so I don't know for sure but I think there were pike lurking in ambush which was making them dart around the weed cover when landing them and also kept them hanging back. Glad you enjoyed it, warts and all.👍
Nightmare peg even if you had gone on waggler earlier not sure you could of got enough in net fast. I would of lost my mind. Did you fish the open match at woodlands lakes monday
@@HOOKEDFishingChannel well just to let you know i dusted my gear off ordered some new tackle and fished on Monday caught very well sat peg to peg will a load of amature bait chuckers lol. Thats down to watching your videos. Going to get back up to speed this winter then start match fishing again next year
Brilliant mate, that's what I like to hear. It doesn't matter what gear you've got or style of fishing, I'm not the kind of person to tell everyone how to do it, I just share my experiences and it's great that they help so many people either start, get back into the sport after a lay off or just improve their own skills. I feel very humbled by that. Thanks for watching and commenting👍
Yes I know, but everyone I spoke to on that length said maggot was best., The week before the winner did it on hemp and tares, I don't know what the lads on the other sections fished.
I can't seem to do anything right at the moment, never gone so long without a result, had a few nearly's but this one I wasn't even close, lack of knowledge and learning on the day. Some of these lads had been practicing several times - nice if you have the time and opportunity.
Small things in the back of the mind that really shouldn't bother you start to eat away and before you know where you are the mood has been set , we've all done it ' did you fish a bad match ? No you didn't, would I have done it differently? Yes I bloody hate pole fishing 🤣🤣🤣🤣 so both wag rods would have had a run out . You could go back in that peg tomorrow and fish the pole tares ' hemp ' berries etc and bag up , and catch bugger all on the wag and maggots ' next one has your name on it . 👍 I've seen it in the tea leaves 🤣them new tea bags the sort the chimp's drink are shite the only have to see a teaspoon and boom they go off like hand grenade. 🤣🤣🤣
No two days are the same Martin, we know that too well. Like you say, little things start to compound, this was a difficult edit for me as I was probably as stressed watching myself back as I was fishing it, (had to cut out lots of mutterings and sweaty words🤣). As for tea, it has to be Yorkshire 😉
@@HOOKEDFishingChannel it's history buddy ' clay pigeon shooting years ago someone said to me what's hit is history what's missed is mystery , works in angling just the same you either catch em or you don't . 👍👍👍👍
Not sure how that would help Ian, I needed 4m to clear the weedbed, it's not possible to collapse and extend a telescopic handle with one hand, god knows I've tried when trotting in the river😉
@@HOOKEDFishingChannel John I got a 4m 4 section Tele pole and once it’s in net can tap the anglers end of pole into bank to start collapse to next section etc etc SIMPLES
Ridiculous wasn't it pal, the things we have to put up with. Apparently it's allowed but they were requested not to do it. Would love another crack at that peg knowing what I know now.
john what can a say , great fishing under circumstances but if thad fished waggler from start to finnish youd have hammered em honestly i was saying to miself pick waggler rod up please eh eh.
Peter spent all the match on the pole, I don't know why those fish wouldn't stay in range, on my peg maybe the weed cover inside was hiding some predators🤷♂ Only myself to blame for not working it out fast enough.

Just about coped James, it was the weed bar causing me the biggest headache.
