It’s amazing how well the built in mics work. I recognized the sound because I just watched MKBHDs video and he demoed it. I love that Apple has been making some good decisions this year. I hope it becomes a trend. Hey Rene, what app do you use to monitor the temps of all the sensors and drives? I loved that huge list you showed from your status bar 😲

Sadly, I could tell from the beginning that you were using the built-in mic. It has weird hollow sound I noticed first on MKBHD's video (which is how I immediately recognized the sound on this video)
It's the only logical next step for them if they were planning a full Pro line refresh. Better differentiation from the Air line too. That's what they did with iPad Pro vs Air vs basic iPad recently.
I've got some left over gift cards and a 15" to trade in. Thinking of getting the 2.4 mHz, 64 GB, 8 GB and 1 TB... I have so many external hard drives lying around. I might as well save the $$$ where I can without sacrificing capability as this will be my laptop for a long time to come unless if fails.
What I want to know is that 1. Does the keyboard still as loud as the butterfly crap? 2. How is the internal of the laptop, is it passively cooled like the current MBA or not? 3. Does it thermal throttle? I’m not coming back from windows till then
I can answer some of these 1) no, it’s noticeably quieter 2)Compared to the MBA like you said it should be much more passively cooled 3) I don’t own one so i can’t answer that one.
Rene, HI! Thanks for all of your very informative content. I listened both to your voice and Jonathan’s voice in his video with Phil Schiller. On both occasions there is a very low pitch non-stop rumbling in the background.
René: speed vs. depth of reporting = stellar. Thank you so much! I am curious to ask you… from your pristine video, I believe I am detecting some light leaking from individual keys on the keyboard. I ordered a 16" MacBook Pro, but that would be a dealbreaker for me. Can you please confirm whether this is happening, or it's a mere artifact in the videography…
The key travel is 1mm vs 0.7mm on the butterfly keyboard. If you’ve ever used a magic keyboard which comes with all the iMacs, it will likely be very similar to that, just with more stable keys.
You recorded your voice with the built in mics. What I can hear is that there is a very low rumble noise when listening with (studio) headphones. But for the rest, it’s very impressive regarding sound quality. It’s the dream MacBook Pro for me. Maybe I will replace my current MacBook Pro with this one. I mean, 8TB storage and 64GB RAM!!! Question: how well does it perform regarding heat issues and throttling?
Rene Hi! Almost all sound good. But what about anti-glare coatings? It is a very old MB problem. Can you do some tests? Take it for walk or ride on a bike with it in a backpack, this can clarify about the new screen. Like please!
I’m really disappointed they got rid of the butterfly keyboard. First they get rid of 3D Touch and now this? I loved that keyboard and it seems that they solved all the issues with their latest gen version. I’ll need to try out this new one, I’m hoping it has a similar feel to the butterfly keyboard
With all the new upgrades and specs for this, I want to know which specs is worth the bump up. I’m a videographer (heavy use of After Effects, Da Vinci, and Premiere Pro), photographer (Photoshop, Lightroom) and graphic designer (Illustrator). Want to know if it’s wise to bump up some specs or just keep it as is?
built-in mic sounded good and could easily see it being good enough while traveling but for quality I can't see anyone choosing the built-in over a stand-alone mic still. Was very noticeable when the audio switched during this video.
Just to be clear, there’s no more keyboard issues right? And also how’s the sustained performance and are there any heating issues (particularly for the base model).
I’d give it a 9.2/10. I’m sure my opinion doesn’t matter, but the iMac is still a better deal for 4K video editing for now at least. Edit: Ok, maybe a 9.5/10. Apple replacing the 15” with this at the same price is bananas!
Alex Diaz I didn’t even think about that. A 4K or even a 5k screen using their 2014 iMac-esque technology would have been killer! Apple is known for using 2nd rate GPUs. Their operation system smoothness makes up for it imo. A RTX-like GPU would have made me save my coins instead of being stuck on a iMac with a solid 4gb GPU and a i7.
Rene, the audio was clean but it sounded like you were recording the video sitting outside, or as someone else commented, recording in a car. It lacks the quality that you would get from using a dedicated microphone like you use for podcasting or recording. If you were using the new Mac to record in a dedicated sound proof room, that ever so slight echo would probably go away and would probably sound a little more rich than it does now. It could also be I'm nit picking too.
I have several 85W power supplies for a 2017 15" MacBook Pro...can these be used with the 2019 16" MacBook Pro even if the charging rate is reduced? Can any harm come from a lower-powered charge block?
I've been using the same magic keyboard 2 with the magic trackpad 2 (lol, I think I have that right...the ones with the internal, rechargeable batteries inside) that came with my late 2015 27" 5K iMac, and they are STELLAR. They are still pristine and function like new. Even the internal batteries are still working very well. I have been holding out for a redesign of the 27" iMac before buying a new computer (since this one, which is a top spec'd model, including pure flash storage, still works like a stallion), but maybe what I really needed all along was a redesigned MacBook! If the thermals on the machine are good enough, i can see myself buying the 16" with an external display for my desk. I think waiting until mid 2020 though is the way to go at this point. But this thing looks Promising; yes with a capital P!
The noise cancelling does a great job. You can really hear the difference compared to your normal mic .. I was just going go complement you on doing some room treatment ... but now I know that it was the new mics that did the job for you ;) . P.S. Please do some room treatment where you do your podcast recording! The little bare-walled office sound makes us crazy! Some inexpensive broadway panels (purchased or home made) go a loooooong way.
I do wish they'd put the SD slot back in... I don't mind moving to USB-C only, but being able to load media from SD (even microSD would be okay) without an external reader would be nice.
Have you checked the little error in minute 4:15? I had that issue in my MacBook Pro 15 inches 2018 using FCX...what do you think is the reason for that failure?
I suspected this audio was recorded using the new MBP early on in the video. It has the same low frequency rumble as that Phil Schiller sit-down interview where they did the same thing. It would be great if Apple could (optionally) automatically recognize that and filter it out, but anyone doing this kind of recording would be wise to run the audio through a high-pass filter before publishing.
I need some buying advice! Some help would be greatly appreciated! So, my 2015 13” mbp’s display broke just a few days ago, which is really unfortunate because I was waiting for Apple to drop the inevitable 14” mbp! My requirements are 16gb of ram and 512GB of storage. Should I get the current 13” model with upgrades for ~2500€ or shell out an extra 200€ for the new 16” baseline, which has a bigger display, a better battery and a much better processor + thermal performance. I really enjoy the portability of the 13”, so I am a bit apprehensive to having to lug around a giant slab of metal. Or is the 16” not that impractical in everyday life? What would you have me do? Get the old 13” model or the much better but clunkier 15” one? Because I really can’t tough out with just an ipad until summer or whenever Apple sees it fit to grace us with the 14” mbp!
I would love to see a comparison to the Dell XPS 15 with similar specs. Want to see it actually use side car with the iPad. Any integration with the iPhone pro? Render times for 4K video for sure BUT this time while also working on something else say photoshop raw photo. See how long it takes to render with the computer doing another task like with 15 tabs open on chrome Thank you. Great initial review by the way. Always wanted a Mac laptop, so maybe this is it if it can beat the Dell XPS15

Yeah I also have this question in mind and some ppl saying yes it will come soon
It's the only logical next step for them if they were planning a full Pro line refresh. Better differentiation from the Air line too. That's what they did with iPad Pro vs Air vs basic iPad recently.
Great video as usual. Can’t believe this was recorded with just the MacBook Pro mike.
Mic 🎙 not mike 😂
Anderson Silva, you absolutely SUCK mike ock
I've got some left over gift cards and a 15" to trade in. Thinking of getting the 2.4 mHz, 64 GB, 8 GB and 1 TB... I have so many external hard drives lying around. I might as well save the $$$ where I can without sacrificing capability as this will be my laptop for a long time to come unless if fails.
What I want to know is that
1. Does the keyboard still as loud as the butterfly crap?
2. How is the internal of the laptop, is it passively cooled like the current MBA or not?
3. Does it thermal throttle?
I’m not coming back from windows till then
I can answer some of these 1) no, it’s noticeably quieter 2)Compared to the MBA like you said it should be much more passively cooled 3) I don’t own one so i can’t answer that one.
just got mine yesterday, i love it so much!! such a high quality product!!
I want to know... Apple says $580 for my mid 2014 15" MBP. Is the Apple trade-in program worth it on buying a new 16" MBP?
Mics sound great
I would like to know if the key press is as “deep” as the 15 inch but less noisy? The noisy keyboard is the only thing I hate about my 15 inch.
It's a different keyboard from their mechanical keyboards. Completely different from past macs
The key travel is 1mm vs 0.7mm on the butterfly keyboard. If you’ve ever used a magic keyboard which comes with all the iMacs, it will likely be very similar to that, just with more stable keys.
@@thebuddercweeper That travel distance means NOTHING compared to butterfly keyboard reliability.
White Fox I figure it would be I just hope the travel is good.
Apple Pi I have used those types. Until last year I’ve only owned iMacs, so getting used to a laptop has been fun.
Can we appreciate the synchronized movement at 9:20
You recorded your voice with the built in mics.
I was amazed that the sound was recorded with the new MacBook mic. Well done!
Rene Hi! Almost all sound good. But what about anti-glare coatings? It is a very old MB problem. Can you do some tests? Take it for walk or ride on a bike with it in a backpack, this can clarify about the new screen.
Like please!
YU keep your pinky up like that when typin
Was very noticeable when the audio switched during this video.
it is good to have a decent enough mic just in case there's a real need to use it. i hope they have also improved the facetime camera.
Just to be clear, there’s no more keyboard issues right? And also how’s the sustained performance and are there any heating issues (particularly for the base model).
Is that a LEGO UCS Imperial Star Destroyer in the background?
I’d give it a 9.2/10. I’m sure my opinion doesn’t matter, but the iMac is still a better deal for 4K video editing for now at least.
Edit: Ok, maybe a 9.5/10. Apple replacing the 15” with this at the same price is bananas!
Yeah! All we need now is a 4k OLED display, and perhaps a better gpu. Maybe a RTX?
Alex Diaz I didn’t even think about that. A 4K or even a 5k screen using their 2014 iMac-esque technology would have been killer! Apple is known for using 2nd rate GPUs. Their operation system smoothness makes up for it imo. A RTX-like GPU would have made me save my coins instead of being stuck on a iMac with a solid 4gb GPU and a i7.
Looking forward to thermal results while pushing it to it’s limits
I just want to know how you controlled your iPhone without touching it for the last part of this video??
Rene, the audio was clean but it sounded like you were recording the video sitting outside, or as someone else commented, recording in a car. It lacks the quality that you would get from using a dedicated microphone like you use for podcasting or recording. If you were using the new Mac to record in a dedicated sound proof room, that ever so slight echo would probably go away and would probably sound a little more rich than it does now. It could also be I'm nit picking too.
I like how my 15" MBP late 2013 looks more modern again since the release of the 16".
Keep up the great work on your videos Rene! You and John Rettinger are among my favorite RUclips tech reviewers!
What’s the program that shows all the core usage and what not that he had on his Mac?
Istat menus
I have several 85W power supplies for a 2017 15" MacBook Pro...can these be used with the 2019 16" MacBook Pro even if the charging rate is reduced? Can any harm come from a lower-powered charge block?
I really dislike the backlight bleed-thru on this redesigned keyboard, but I’ve never had an issue with the 1st gen butterfly keyboard in my 2016 MBP
I still have possibility to return my new 15” until 20 of november...so, tomorrow morning, first thing is to go straight away to Apple store. Wooow
Wait... What? You that's the sound of the microphone? Please Apple make a professional usb 3 mic...
Recorded with the built-in MIC......
Sounds like it was recorded in a parked car
Man, I just bought a 2018 MBP secondhand. :(
I’m so happy I’m ordering this i’m probably going to CTO and do 32 gb the normal 8 core and the 8gb gpu.
Could the new 16” MacBook pro be the new default MacBook?
Oh well. I got the 2016 pro. haven’t really had problems. But not a big fan of the scissor keyboard. I’m wait another couple years then buy the 2019.
14'' inch screen in the current 13'' form factor....NOW.
I wonder can you running games on MacBook Pro 16 inch. I am just curious if it is good or bad.
So if the Macbook is rocking, you don't have to worry about any Knocking! 😂
Is it worth it to upgrade from 2018 Macbook Pro 15" to 2019 16"?
wow! the mic is ALMOST as good as a dedicated mic. And boy the sound is fabulous! I need to get one.
I can hear it in your tone that you and I are equally excited !!!
I want to know if its possible to connect an apple cinema display to a new macbook pro?
Thank you
Great review sir and luv your visuals!! Def time to trade up for my MacPro 2016 (the keyboard alone)! FINALLY APPLE, Steve is at last a bit proud
Scissor switch that bell gizmo, he gleefully implored.
I would love to see a comparison to the Dell XPS 15 with similar specs.
Want to see it actually use side car with the iPad. Any integration with the iPhone pro?
Render times for 4K video for sure BUT this time while also working on something else say photoshop raw photo. See how long it takes to render with the computer doing another task like with 15 tabs open on chrome
Thank you. Great initial review by the way. Always wanted a Mac laptop, so maybe this is it if it can beat the Dell XPS15
What are you using to show CPU, memory, and SSD on your menu bar?
IStat Menu
Mic is better than most, but clearly falls short of your standard mic. I noticed the difference immediately and thought something was wrong with my speaker.
What the hell?! How are the mics that good on a laptop??
The mic array is not better than a standard usb mic, but it is pretty close.
How’s the gaming on it? Both native and with a partitioned BootCamp.
casually placed half-built Lego UCS SSD on the background. Now you're just showing off. ;-)
Okay well listening on the built in phone speakers, I didn’t notice a difference between the built-in mics and your regular one! After popping in some AirPods though, I was able to tell. That says a lot about Apple’s mics
Love the review Rene. Awesome job as usual. Your vid was the first way I found out Apple had put the 16" out for purchase
