Can we take a moment to acknowledge Alicent's hypocrisy? She acted so disgusted by the idea that Daemon and Rhaenyra were screwing in the pleasure house and commented, "You Targaryen do have queer customs." Then she turns down the proposal to wed Helaena to Jace only to have her son and daughter betrothed.

The scene where everyone is staring at each other during the funeral is actually the very first scene they ever shot for the show. None of the actors really knew each other yet and the producers/directors said this was done on purpose because the funeral scene was meant to be awkward.

In medieval times it was common. An eye for an eye ruled for along time. Alicent was right. I watched tons of period dramas and I'm slightly mad at how much they break protocol in HOTD and GOT...like I know it's fantasy and they want us to witness Viserys' incompetence but the HEIR to the throne is more important than a Consort. Always. Like in all history...the heir is always more important but it seems like no one gives a F to protect Rhaenyra besides Viserys...Criston Cole is a freaking white cloak. He is loyal to the king, not the queen consort wtf.
Even Jamie Lannister in one of his chapters remembers how King Aerys was abusing Queen Rhaella and he couldn't do anything because he was the king🙄
A consort has no power...her or his power is giving heirs and support the monarch. Alicent accuses Rhaenyra of not respecting her duties while she doesn't either💀
Her role is to always be behind the king and support him. She is not meant to rule...
I still remember The Crown and how Prince Philip truly struggled with his role as consort because he couldn't take away the protagonism of his wife... "She is the job". Alicent, darling, your job is to take care of your kids and respect the king. That's it.

    • @thereadingtree3492
      @thereadingtree3492 Год назад +1

      Agreed! You are absolutely correct.
Also (and everyone seems to get this wrong), what is treason? GRRM based the laws of Westeros on Medieval laws:
Treason is: Acting or speaking against the King or Queen (NOT the queen or king consort!). They have NO power. No standing. No authority. Any "power" vested in them is influence - only by virtue of their marriage.
Treason in medieval times (and Westeros) is any attempt to undermine the king's authority, word, physical body, or that of the HEIR apparent.
Everyone goes on and on, saying Rhaenyra has committed treason. But she has not. Her affair with Harwin Strong is a lapse in morality (though we could argue she had no choice given that she was forced into marriage with her husband, who is gay). The ensuing illegitimate children are an embarrassment to the crown (unless they are legitimized).
Otto, Alicent, and Cristen Cole are the only ones committing treason here. But, yes, Ser Crispy committed treason when he slept with Rhaenyra and broke his oath.
Here is a recent example of infidelity in royal circles: When the Prince of Whales had an affair with Camilla - while married to Diana - it was a scandal with tragic consequences, but not treason. Yes, they didn't produce a child - but no one would say it was treason. And today - he is King Charles, and Camilla is queen consort.
This is the only bugbear for me with the show. they never SAY it's treason, but they allow characters (like Alicent, Otto, and Crispy) to act as if they have the moral high ground.
I guess they need the drama. People LOVE drama. LOL., and it's fantasy.

That's exactly what I was thinking! In all of history, regardless of what land, ANYONE, besides the king himself, drawing blood from the heir (after threatening the third in line to the throne) would be facing some CONSEQUENCES. Period. And let's add snatching the sacred dagger that is so important that Viserys always carries it. For that matter how Cole was able to escape the black cells/death for crushing the head of a noble man who outranked him societally, politically AND socially needed to be explained because how could even the consort queen explain his out of control behavior? He ruined the heirs wedding.

8:48 I thought it was interesting that Daemon directly mentions LEECHES 🐛 (just pretend w/the emoji 😅) to Otto. Bc it seems pretty clear that Otto & Grand Maester Mellos (who only recommended the damn leeches) were in it together to keep Viserys weak/ailing.
Which is why when Orwlye (sp?) took over, you actually see Viserys get better/stronger (tho he had to lose some limbs bc of previous neglect).
For me, this was confirmation that Daemon KNEW what they were doing, but he also knew Viserys wouldn't listen to him if he brought it up bc of how deep Otto had his claws in.

The whole funeral scene sequence was tense and uncomfortable as it was supposed to be. These are the core family members who are about to start a civil war and try to kill each other. The kids, aside from the taunts about parentage, don't quite know what to do or whom to turn to - so I feel sorry for them. Aemond didn't have a dragon because he is basically a coward. He managed to overcome his fear long enough to win Vhagar's allegiance and that was his breakthrough moment. The real Aemond can now shine - as a sadistic almighty Targaryen prince. Laenor, if you think back through his last scene with Rhaenyra, is desperate for a way out. He doesn't want to be the King Consort, he doesn't want Driftmark, he wants to go his own way and be as "the gods made him." This triggers an idea for Rhaenyra - you can see it beautifully acted in the moment. She doesn't want to kill Laenor, but she needs him out of the way. She and Daemon and Laenor cook it all up together to stage his death, free Laenor (sorry Sea Smoke!) and make it possible for Daemon and Rhaenyra to marry. Yeah, she looks uncomfortable in her love scene with Daemon, but she has no choice even then - Daemon is literally the only person in Westeros she can trust. And she knows that when her father dies, she could very easily be dead rather than the queen. Great setup for next episode!

No. Y'all try so hard to make Daemon a caring person, but there's no evidence of it in the show. When Vaemond talks shit about Jace and Luke he's raising up Baela and Rhaena, Daemon's actual children. What time has he spent with Rhaenyra's kids to care enough about them to disturb the funeral of his own kids' mother to comfort them at that point? None. If anything he's letting the air out of Vaemond's eulogy because he knows Corlys doesn't give a shit about legitimacy and that Vaemond wants Driftmark for himself. With Baela and Rhaena being girls and Jace and Luke being illegitimate he has a chance to get the seat. But the boys are still boys so he calls out their illegitimacy. Daemon's best characteristic is that he understands power moves and can read people very well. Children's feelings (remember, he ignores his own daughter) don't yet factor into his qualities.

all true but Jace part. I don't think Jace could speak High Valyrian, I don't think he understand. he needs translator in the dragon's pit. it's about Rhaenyra. Daemkn can't take his eyes off her, he understand she felt uncomfortable when Viserys started to notice. she puts her children closer and Daemon notice the gesture because he's been looking at her.

Yeah they said they loved each other. I think that the sex scene was directed horribly. And that's probably why her face at the end was weird. That tells me in itself she's not out for using him like that.

She feels she has done her duty and is getting the shit end of the stick for doing what was expected of her :( I don't agree with her attacking Rhaenyra's children or vice versa, but it's a GoT show, there's gonna be drama lol. 2:33 Daemon has a reputation for killing his wife and it seems like, Alicent & Cole pay a close attention on him (and Rhaenyra). he knew he was being observe by them. but he did looking for Rhaenyra because he hasn't seen her around. he turns his heads away because she's just arrived and being the center of attention atm. Daemon won't draw such attention to give the Greens a confirmation about their illicit affairs back then. he was right. turns out, Alicent & Cole really looking at her hoping to catch a single blunder from her. but she's not entertaining her in anyways. Otto catching Rhaenyra's dismissal after Daemon. he also catching Daemon came back with Rhaenyra at the fights.
18:30 I think Laenor proposed to die in a battlefield in the Stepstones so she can find another husband. and Rhaenyra accept it because daddy dragon is currently single. Laenor planned to die, as she said "fire is prison, the sea offers an escape" BUT then Daemon had better idea to exploits Laenor's death without actually killing a dragon rider he might need in the war to come. that's what I thought.

The Funeral sequence is one if not the tensest sequence I have ever seen on TV. So many people not saying anything and just staring leaves much implied but not said.
1.- Rhaenyra’s pov at the beginning shows us how alone she is. Alicent looks at her like “WTF are you doing here?” because EVERYONE there knows she is not welcome. The Velaryons, her inlaws, give her the cold shoulder because they all know those kids are not Velaryons and they themselves do not approach them. Lucerys and Jahaerys are in their own corner mourning the death of their own dad who they are not allowed to mourn. Rhaenyra wants Jace and Luke to interact with their cousins in order to pass them over as Velaryons and have people see them as such but can the illusion be possible if the kids do not see themselves as Velaryons?
2.- Viserys wants to reconnect with Daemon so much. Remember that he exiled him because Daemon “slept” with Rhaenyra and after Laena’s death he feels both he and his brother share the burden of losing the one he loves (Laena even if it was not the same exactly, was dying in childbirth like Aemma). However, Viserys is king and kings do not approach people it is the other way around. Daemon just lounging in the corner is a power move because he is making Viserys go to him. Notice that just like Rhaenyra, the Velaryons are not approaching Daemon at all either.
3.- The interaction between Alicent’s children tells you a lot about the characters of each of them. Helaena is once again mumbling prophetic things (I will not spoil lol) while being uninterested in the happenings around her. Aegon is proving that he is not interested in politics at all (Honestly people say Aegon is this show’s Joffrey but I think his more the show’s Tyrion) and complains about being betrothed to his sister. Aemond (the main character of the episode) seems the most level-headed and seems to be the most mature of the three.
4.- Alicent is in her corner, her dad is there and has his job back and she seems to be more in the background again as in previous episodes, focusing on her husband and kids while her dad handles politics. Larys is just like “Notice me senpai” and Alicent is freaking out because even with her dad she deems Larys a wild card.
5.- Jace is just uncomfortable around his “cousins” because he knows who his actual dad is and he believes he should not be there. Baela (or Rhaena I can’t differ them) holding his hand is not just a nice gesture but an important one because she is saying “we are cousins regardless of what things are.” Lucerys as Laenors’ second born son is meant to inherit Driftmark and Corlys (though he clearly does not approve) is trying to prepare him for it. Lucerys does provide an important perspective on things ( If I am lord, it means all are dead), showing Corlys how these talks of power and succession can affect kids.
6.- The most important interaction so far is the Aemond and Jace interaction. Aemond, like everyone, KNOWS who their real dad is and he must have mustered the courage to give his condolences to him but backs down at the last moment. This goes to show you how the beef of the parents is affecting the kids. There is also the issue that Jace and Luke constantly bullied Aemond for not having a dragon for years and it must eat him inside; How could bastards get dragons but I a trueborn cannot? I think Aemond sees himself as a bastard because he has no dragon.
7.- I think Laenor in the water is not mourning but contemplating suicide. His sister is dead and left only Girls who inherit after the boys, his family is probably ashamed of him because he could not do his duty. Things overall are looking bleak for the Velaryons as a potential crisis of succession looms over the horizon and Laenor sees himself as the one responsible for being gay (he hates himself essentially). Corlys immediately panics and gets the lover to go after him. Rhaenyra sees this and gets her kids to bed as an excuse.
8.- Otto and Daemon’s interaction is also interesting. Remember in episode 1 Otto’s wife died recently and Daemon rubs salt on that wound pissing Otto off. Otto tries to do the decent thing and gives condolences because he knows Daemon actually loved Laena (he had children with her after all) but Daemon is just in a dark place.
9.- Otto’s interaction with Aegon is a reasonable one. This man fought tooth and nail to put him on the Iron Throne only to see him drunk at a funeral. If you rewatch Notice how Otto glances and is disgusted by Aegon and his utter contempt for the ceremony. Aegon saying “brother” means that Aemond must have dragged him out of other similar situations before. The dragon sound Aemond hears at the end of the funeral is Vhagar emitting a dragon call, meaning that the creature wants a rider. Aemond naturally responds.
10.- Cherry on top is Viserys calling Alicent Aemma before leaving to bed. It is such a lowkey gut punch because it proves to Alicent that the king is just delusional about not just the kids but the overall outlook of the family.

Daemon is under no delusions and refuses to entertain Otto’s pretend niceties. Daemon see’s Otto for what he is: a conniving leach bleeding the Targaryens dry.

I think this episode did a really great job of showing how the King and Otto are the true villains. King V should have either waited for Laena to mature or stayed single. Instead he tries to soothe his guilt over Aemma by making Rhanerya his heir and marrying Alicent while pretending he didn't know it was a setup by Otto. Then he proceeds to let it be known that Rhanerya will always be his favorite while pushing her into a loveless marriage. And Otto who's been scheming since Day 1 pushes his daughter into a loveless marriage, then keeps stirring the heir pot because he's wanted his folk in there since Day 1. It wouldn't have mattered if Rhanerya was a virgin until marriage or had legit kids, Otto wanted his own to be heirs and didn't want a woman ruler. Otto & the King also ruined the friendship between Rhanerya & Alicent, when they both needed not only allies, but trusted friends.

We need to pour out a little liquor to the *anonymous* *guy* that Daemon killed who matched the same complexion as Laenor's. It's a crazy world but Rhaenyra wants Daemon as her husband. A life had to be sacrificed to spare Laenor's life. I guess Qarl and Laenor pointed to that guy for Daemon to kill.

Was he not one of Alicent's/Otto's little birds? Waiting on the stairwell for something to report to his masters? At least that was my thought, but I guess I don't see any direct evidence for it on reconsideration. I guess I just assumed if Daemon was going to merk someone, he'd be smart and kill two birds with one stone and kill an enemy.

In the end, we will look at all the parties and see what they gained and what they lost
The Blacks: Rhaenyra’s faction's greatest gain was twofold. Viserys’ proclamation ensures that the nature of her children will no longer be publicly brought into question, forcing the Velaryons and their riches to take her side and preventing anyone in King’s Landing and the realm from raising complaints unless they Value their lives. Daemon now is on her side firmly with all the assets and skills at his disposal. Her only setback is the Velaryons themselves. Laenor “dying” and the nature of Lucerys known to Velaryon will cause a dynastic dispute that she needs to solve and get to her side. Rhaenys is still cross with her and Corlys is clearly at a loss of what to do.
The Greens: Aemond boding with Vhagar is a great victory in itself. Besides being old, massive, and powerful, Vhagar is a veteran of Dragon to-Dragon warfare and is by itself a symbol of Targaryen conquest. Visenya, one of Aegon the conqueror’s sister wives rode Vhagar a hundred years ago and Aemond having the beast is a symbol of legitimacy for Alicent’s family. Another gain is that Alicent finally willing to play the Game of Thrones in the same style as Otto and enlist Larys’ services. The only loss the Greens have is that Viserys will no longer trust Alicent in any way and keep her, as well as her kids with him, at bay. This loss however is in the grand scheme of things a minor one since Viserys is becoming more lucid, allowing Otto and Alicent to take more control of the affairs of Westeros and look for more allies.
The Velaryons: the ultimate losers of the Episode. House Velaryon stands on the precipice of a succession crisis. With Laenor “dead” and his kids well known to be bastards, a conflict within the family seems extremely likely. Rhaenys still wants the girls to get Driftmark while Corlys wants to follow the traditional way. Then there is uncle Vaemond who might try something next episode so the Velaryons either solve this quickly or crumble as a faction.

    • @AaronGuest
      @AaronGuest Год назад +1

Agree with you pretty much, but I say that it is Vaemond instead of Corlys who is following tradition. Corlys isn't following it when he knows that they are bastards, passing over the rightful rulers of not only the Iron Throne, but also his own lands in Driftwood. The crazy thing is with Corlys is that ambition is basically what destroys most of what house Velayrons power.

    "Big daddy Daemon", lol!
In the BTS the showrunners said it was one of the earliest scenes they filmed and the cast didn't really know each other well so it turned out really lucky in the end because they wanted that sense of awkwardness anyway. If that helps.
4.42, I actually laughed out loud when you said that about Otto!
I hate the same characters you do, and feel for "little Jon Snow"!
7.29- sounds like my family 😆 JK
9.09, Iolled at that too- watching the episode and now.
I brightened the screen, and rewatched the episode, especially because on other channels a lot of comparisons between the scene with young Alicent and Viserys...I think that she couldn't really be super into it, because she is still married technically. But I also saw a glance of...quiet inner peace? Like "Ok, I'm finally home, and I can rest peacefully here for a moment", while everything else is spinning out of control. Imho
Thanks for the video. You crack me up with some of your commentary, so I'm glad we share mostly similar views!

I'm so glad you called out the Aegon-Aemond-Helaena relationship seeming to mirror the future Aegon-Aemon-Naerys just a few short generations later. I thought the same thing since you have a drunken, lecherous Aegon bemoaning that he has to marry his sister, who seems sweet and kind if maybe not Best-Future-Queen-Ever material, while Younger Brother Aemond, who let's face it would probably be a better king (in an, I'm taking stuff more seriously sort of way) jumps to her defense and says, "I'd marry if it was an option." Granted, Helaena's Aemond is a little psychopath with no qualms about murdering family while Naerys' Aemon was a noble knight, but it's an interesting parallel of a dynamic to come. Spoiler: Both sister-wives end up having very tragic life stories, too.
Also, according to one interview, the post-funeral scenes were actually some of the first scenes shot for the show, back when the actors were still getting to know each other, so the awkwardness is both intentional and in some ways very real since the actual people are also still trying to figure out how to behave around one another.

I had mixed feelings about the sex scene between Rhaenyra/Daemon too. I think (for me) it had alot to do with the fact that Milly & Matt had such palpable chemistry...comparatively Matt & Emma, just don't.
& I think it has to do with the director being Miguel/male (yeah, I said it). I think they should've brought back the female director of Episode 4 to do these scenes.
I also know from interviews that Matt really felt overly sexualized bc of the amount of sex scenes he has as Daemon....first of all, that's the character you signed up for. That's Daemon lol BUT I understand where Matt is coming from & again I say, they could've brought in a different director to get a more tasteful sex scene to work between them (matt/emma).

Clare Kilner is that female director and I agree regarding the scene! Plus, she directed Rhay's wedding party, brutal murder of 'the boyfriend' (I couldn't even watch more than a moment his butcherd face) so the violence and gore is also her thing. The politics at the party, Alicent's entrance - chef's kiss. She's good all around.

Not to mention he should do his duty to his house, I couldn’t imagine causing that much grief to my mother 😢. I’m not saying he must stay married to Rhaenyra but he could just put her aside like other lords do.

First, Rhaenyra is not some highborn/noble lady, whom you can cast away... She is the heir to the throne.. If anything, she would have had the power to cast away her marriage to Laenor.. But, in this patriarchy, that is not possible.. And, I don't believe Daemon would have agreed to have an open relationship.. Mind, Daemon is not only Rhaenyra's lover and husband- he is her greatest asset and ally... So, to treat him as a sidemeat would not go over very well for any of them.

He does, but the scene of him comforting his daughters was apparently cut-not sure why though. Maybe it was a pacing issue or time constraint? Personally, I would replace the scene of the girls crying while Daemon walks back and forth with the scene they cut. That, or maybe they wanted Daemon to appear more aloof, and showing him as a caring father broke the perception of him being an ambiguous rogue?
