Ice Fishing on Lake Mendota! (I got ticketed!)

- Ice fishing another phenomenal lake in Madison! We by far had the best tip up fishing this year. 5 flags in under 2 hours is a pretty solid day to me. We unfortunately weren’t able to pull any big pike today, but I have caught some very nice fish here in the past. Again, if you haven’t fished the Madison lakes I would most certainly recommend them. If you have fished Madison lakes which is your favorite or which should I fish next?

I was ticketed once over by the Chemistry building. It was literally 15 minutes before you didn't need a permit anymore! Only day parking is free in Lot 60 is Sundays. I've also parked in the parking garage before and I made a set of wheels to put onto my flip over shanty so that I wouldn't have to drag the sled on concrete, or drop it off, park and walk back to the ice - that I never trust out there!
They want that money 😂 I have done the parking garage before, but only when I have someone watch my stuff. Nothing worse than coming back to half your stuff gone.
I use 20 pound mono for my leader instead of a steel leader for the reason you mentioned. I know 20 pound mono is a little heavy, but still isn’t as visible as steel. Keep up the great filming. Thanks for taking us along.
Appreciate it! I have been having a rough time lately with break offs with 30# fluoro. Don’t know if it’s a bad batch of line or what but I’m doing some experimenting with other brands and tests. In the past I have had a couple break offs in the whole season, but this year it’s one every other trip.
I use 50 and don’t have any problems
I bought some 40# to try out. Personally I think I had just bought some cheap line or a bad spool because I have never had issue before. If 40# doesn’t work 50# is next
Plastic leader material for dedicated pike fishing is heartbreak waiting to happen. There are smarter ways to fish with more insurance.
how do you hook the fish when hand lining like that? feel slight tension and pull hard? I've never done any ice fishing with tip ups.
Everyone has their own technique. I use smaller hooks so I don’t have to pull real hard to set a hook. With a tip up there is no give like you would have in a rod, and the line doesn’t have stretch. So in my opinion a small quick pull is typically enough.
Is that the Middleton side of the lake? I've fished the Northside and have caught 1 over 25" yet
South part of the lake, right next to campus.
@608fishing thanks for the info. Great video
Appreciate it! Good luck!
Fish the North side off of Veth Ave....
@Beasel that's where I've been going actually just got off the lake got 2 keeper eyes and 7 snakes
I got up this morning at like 5:30 am and was gonna walk to the grocery store a few blocks away ...
Took three steps and WHAM landed on my butt
Nothing but glare ice
That was as close to ice fishing as i'll probably get this winter.
Creepers! But I get it, sometimes the risk isn’t worth the reward.
