    Rock aficionados have heaped boatloads of acclaim upon Dave Friedman’s BE preamp topology-praised for years as one of the most delectable “modified-Marshall-style” lead channels around. This Marshall model 2203-derived circuit has been reconfigured into several Friedman models over the years, but it has typically appeared in beastly 100-watt iterations like the BE-100. The BE-50 Deluxe changes all that by packaging three distinct channels into a versatile 50-watt head that Friedman calls “my most flexible design yet.”
    It’s true: There are a lot of knobs on this thing. But approach the 3-channel design one step at a time, and it makes sense pretty quickly. There are two independent EQ stages: one for the clean channel, and one shared by the two lead channels. Each has bass, middle and treble controls. While the clean channel has a single volume control, the two lead channels-the standard BE channel and high-gain HBE-each have dedicated gain and master controls. All share a trio of output-stage controls labeled presence, response (negative-feedback-loop level), and thump (a resonance or deep control). The two-button footswitch (included) allows selection between the clean and lead blocks and the lead channel’s two gain levels (HBE is labeled “boost” on the footswitch).
    The clean channel’s preamp is lifted from Friedman’s Buxom Betty, a non-master-volume amp that delivers bold, sparkling, American-meets-British clean tones that get a little crunchy when you push it hard. True to form, there’s no master volume on the BE-50’s clean channel, either, though it does have a 3-way bright switch to tailor the sparkle. A full-/half-power switch on the back panel means the two EL34 tubes can be run in pentode/full-power mode or in triode mode for a more club-friendly 25 watts. Four 12AX7s drive the preamp and phase-inverter.

    Hey John, thanks for all that you do for all of us! Plus, that Rig Rundown with Edge's main man was the BEST so far!!! BY FAR!!!! You also said you were gonna dig out one of the FX you've had for years. I wanna see those moments!!! Thanks man!!!

    This amp matched with the Friedman 4/12 cab is amazing. Never run it half power, just doesn't feel the same. Clean is amazing, BE and HBE channels work well together. Really need to play with the switches to dial in for each persons needs. Playing at home I use the Rivera RockCrusher Power Attenuator/Load Box for Amps.
    John does an amazing job, but you have to test this out. Every guitar comes through with its own voice.

      Hi .so you say the 25 watt setting sucks 😮.
      Would you say it's worth stepping up to the 100 .and just use the master volume.
      Looking between the 50 and 100 .won't the best tone poss for home studio

    • @TrevorrNourse
      @TrevorrNourse Год назад

      @@davidwilson4771 Hi David, I really didn't care for the lower setting which is why I used the RockCrusher. However now I use the Two Notes Torpedo Captor X. This allows me to drive the amp hard with no hit to tone like the Rivera does. I have expanded my Friedman line to include the Runt 20 combo and now my fav is the Friedman Twin Sister Combo. Running these in stereo, almost never use the BE-50 Deluxe. My son uses more now.

    Thank you for showing a little more of the clean channel ! I am looking to be a little more convinced with the clean channel on this Model. I tried a BE 100 a couple of years ago, if it would have had a little better clean channel, i would not have returned it. I am totally sold on the drive channels ! If I could get a decent Sultans of swing or Buckaroo out of the clean channel, I would jump on this amp with the velocity of a gazelle ! I wish you would have turned the clean channel up to where the amp could breath a little to get meatier thicker clean sound . . if it will do that. Otherwise, I loved the rest of the demo !

    You guys do great gear videos and articles full stop. But my one complaint is that with amps/gear like this, that PRS Tremonti, and stuff like that, you really need a different style player to demo it. Someone who will play some Mastodon, Tool or Prong riffs. Leave the banjo licks for the Conway Twitty tribute model. NO knock on JB. I love Johns reviews on everything else, he is phenomenal.

      Open any PRS vs Gibson thread and you’ll see Gibson backers frustrated with the PRS folks whose ears just miss certain frequencies. I could describe it to you, but it’s be like describing a color you’ve never seen. Th only PRS that breaks out of this is Paul’s. It is very, very real.

      @rebelcat420 6 лет назад +2

      TheTRUTH I know a lot of folks love the Friedman stuff, but there is a harshness to the gain tones on every one I’ve heard that just don’t do it for me either. Not saying they are bad amps, just not the right amps for my ears.

    • @mooferoo
      @mooferoo 6 лет назад +2

      rebelcat420 - That's exactly how i feel about them as well. I've described them as grainy before. There's something nasty in the upper mids or highs to my ears. In every single Friedman i've heard. It almost sounds like a bad overdrive pedal has been mixed into the tone somewhere, just in a really specific frequency.

    • @dan_perry

      It's probably the diode bounding (Sat switch) you are hearing...overrated indeed.

    • @elcerebro9142
      @elcerebro9142 6 лет назад

      I have a runt 50 and a couple of 70s marshalls they just don't compare. its okay but doesn't feed back properly and the mids are wrong. its too nasaly and not sweet enough. harsh and rough sounding upper harmonics. needs to be more smooth and creamy with crunch and growl with singing highs. some of this is how new the amp is. give it twenty years it will probably sound a lot better. something about those carbon film and carbon comp resistors used in the old marshalls. mustard caps too there's mojo there people think new stuff can get and its just not getting it. I just picked up a 5150 block letter head for $400 and I put a choke and bias mod on it and its crushing this Friedman.

    • @dinounplugged3605
      @dinounplugged3605 5 лет назад

      I agree! I really wanted to like it, as I’m looking for a plexi but there was something in the sound I couldn’t quite put my finger on and it is in fact a certain harshness in the upper minds. This is not the amp for me.

    A PRS played through a Friedman Amp. Can't get much more trendy than that. "BE" on the BE-50 stands for "Brown Eye" (no, I'm not kidding). Friedman is a modified Marshall clone. $2,500 for a clone, named after a butt hole? What kind of suckers do you take us readers for?
