Do not polish intake! Polish exhaust if you want, won't do anything after ten minutes but your choice. If you don't have a little turbulence on the intake walls the air will run too close and condensate fuel on the port walls.
Irks me every time he says port and polished but I try to not say anything🤫

I have an xp288 that I assume is about 1996 ish, It has a bigger air box I'm wondering if that is an upgrade ? And when
I'm not really an expert on the 288 but I think some came through with a taller filter cover from the factory
