Yup, makes a massive difference for farming availability. This also has a myriad of other uses, too. I've used it to phase over to a low-pop realm to do the Iskaara soup since Area 52 soups are so busy you some times don't even get enough orders to complete the weekly quest, or for farming mounts and rares and junk.
Not sure if it's confirmation bias, but did this for my farming of Ratstallion in Dalaran Sewers and noticed way less players in the area. insanely useful. Ty so much.
It's possible you just got a lucky phase/shard, but I've used this to farm countless mounts, reagents, rare spawns, and other stuff for years and years and it has proven very effective for me. The trick is far easier to pull off if you have a second account, but the speedy alt-f4 swaps are easily doable too.

It should, I just used this trick a few days ago to get my Ivory Cloud serpent via my Scryers shard. You might have had too long of a loading screen between alt-f4's to get back and forth in time and the group delisted, potentially. I keep my name of the group very short when I'm doing it so I can type it faster to request to join.
Yup, as long as they can reach the dragon isles (or whatever continent you're using this trick on, it can help a lot when farming rares/rare mounts and stuff too) then you can use this shard hopping trick. Warmode is another good option to consider too since there is usually a lot less people in warmode, so combining that with the RP realm hop should net you some pretty low population character phasing.
For sure, with 2 accounts it's way easier and less annoying to do. xD The mount-wheel addon is called OPie, I did a video on it a couple years back. You can use it for all sorts of other stuff, too!

Naw, though that probably does help a little. xD RP Realms and a phasing trick are the real way to play.

I swear I used this a few weeks ago but now it doesn't work. Can't see my party in custom finder.
nevermind, it still works! It finally dawned on me that my RP toons were ally and I was trying to join in on a horde toon... doh!
Couldn't you just set it up to auto-accept invites?
I don't believe custom groups can be set for auto-invite, unless I'm mistaken. I think only groups listed in the raid section can.
