I have been a fan for years and I am glad that you participate in these STEM events. You guys help promote a culture of learning that is so vital and needed. Thank you for everything that you guys do.
WOW! This brought back a great memory, when the pager airplane, was my first introduction by my father, to model aircraft and aviation during the early 1970s when I was a small child. And my overall passion for model and full side aircraft still presently lives with in me today and always! And someday, I hope to get a real opportunity to share my original model aircraft designs that are not paper airplane, lol, for all to enjoy as well.
I'm pretty sure I hold the " unofficial" world's record paper airplane flight time. Believe it or not I flew a paper airplane out of my hospital room on the 13th floor of Grady Hospital in Atlanta GA. The conditions must have been perfect with hot air rising from the street below and high level winds at that height because the plane flew for over 2.5 hours without ever landing on a ledge or anything. But more remarkable was that the plane momentarily flew around the corner of the hospital and I lost sight of it but 15 or 20 minutes later I saw that it was still flying and by then it was out over near by I 75 where it continued flying until I could no longer see it as it had crossed the interstate and was just a speck still visible out over Memorial Drive. When it finally got so far away that it could not be seen any longer it had been in the air over 3.5 hours. I think it was a gift from God to entertain a boy who was spending a week in the hospital after a bicycle accident. And although I don't remember their names there were 3 other witnesses to this momentous flight. The other 3 boys who were in the same hospital ward as I was. PS...this was a long time ago but I still remember it like it was yesterday.
When I was a kid I folded the perfect airtime paper plane. I only flew it a couple times before it had the absolute most amazing paper airplane flight I have ever seen in person. I threw it up like this guy but in the middle of my street. It caught an updraft and did several large circles while losing almost no height at all. Simultaneously my neighbor was leaving their house. They had enough time to walk to their car, start it and drive away...just in time for my precious perfect part plane to land in the back of their pickup, never to be seen again 😓
Hearing the distance and the record breaking time made me chuckle. As a kid my brothers, some friends and I were making and flying paper airplanes and someone threw one that kept catching updrafts or gusts of wind which kept it aloft. We chased that thing hundreds of meters down the street and we finally gave up and never actually saw it land. It was heading into some trees so I don't think it made it much farther.
I hope you were able to spend time doing a show about the museum itself too. AWESOME place! I am lucky to be less than an hour away and visit several times a year.
lol...Redbull. Craziest mountain bike courses and tricks, baha racing 2000 horsepower buggies, wingsuit flying down a mountainside, racing cigar boats at 100 mph....... and of course, death defyingly throwing paper planes in a warehouse. hahaha !! One of these things is not like the others...
But at least one of them is accessible to normal, sane human beings. Nothing wrong with the other events...but it isn't the average person flying down mountainsides in a wingsuit. lol
@@ryan_j_peck hahaha !! Yeah, I prefer feet on the ground. I just thought it's a little funny, because Red Bull sponsors all the extreme sports that the average person would never attempt....and then there's paper planes. lmao. Scary stuff. :P :P
Red Bull loves flight in general, and has sponsored everything that pushes the limits of flight from air racing, to stratospheric parachute jumps, to Flugtag where you build something and try to glide it off a dock (mostly for the laughs). This contest is more along the lines of Flugtag, something everyone can participate in but still with the goal of setting records and breaking boundaries.
@@eulachonfish Yes I know. I also knew what flugtag is. It's like if Nitro Circus decided to hold a chess match. It just doesn't mesh with the rest. I'm sure they play chess once in a while, but after seeing a triple backflip on a motorcycle, chess seems less than exciting.
That would make me nervous! Different pressures, air currents, even lighting. Pitch high into cooler air and catch as much heat from lighting as I can? Or is there more cool lower? Hope to catch a thermal from camera lighting? My Grandma still not reading my texts correctly and texting back.."you'll shoot your eye out"? Me shrugging her text off with a chuckle and then embarrassed, having to explain to everyone that it's not as bad as it looks? And the bandage should come off in a week, because Grandma was right and apparently understood my text way more than I gave her credit for? So many variables!
In the UK round, Yicheng Sun, of De Montfort University, won in the distance category, launching his paper plane 158ft. But the longest air time, by Billy Smith from Sheffield Hallam University, was only 7.74 seconds.
My gods, i could have sworn the world-record breaker's plane looked alive; like a falcon, circling its prey (aka the rest of the competition💁🏽♀️😂) with how its flight path spiraled on the way down💁🏽♀️😳 I can't even imagine how amazing it must have been to see in person cuz as a woman i can tell you; 14 seconds of 'performance' doesnt seem like a long time, but when you think about how said performance is coming from an inanimate object, a girl can't help but be a lil impressed 💁🏽♀️😉🤣🤣🤣
Hey FliteTest, How about putting up a link for the design to build those winning paper airplanes so people can build them and have fun flying them with their children? Namaste.
Got a chance to go to the museum last December. It’s like fantasy land for airplane nuts. Let’s also not forget that you didn’t take pictures and video of just any B-17. That’s the famed “Memphis Belle”.
not related to this video, but I have a cool idea for a plane. A large aircraft with hatches on the bottom, and in the hatches there could be boxes that hold onto small quads or planes. Mid-flight, the planes being carried could turn on their motors, and then be dropped out. I know this would probably be very difficult to make, but it was a cool idea I wanted to share.
Growing up in Miami, I one time threw a paper airplane that the wind caught it just right- and it was up in the air for 10 seconds. I wish someone was there to see it. Is there are world record for length of flight for a paper airplane flown outside?
I think that would be hard to keep even remotely fair. Wind speed, direction, temperatures, ground features and trees and buildings disturbing the wind are all things that can influence how the paper plane will fly. When competing inside you get rid of a lot of these. Instead the problem is finding a venue large enough to support both the range and time events.
redbull rule ruins the record on especially the hangtime. many korean kids can throw their a4 gliders more than 15s. because they are using square deaigned 80gsm paper plane for hangtime.
There should be a 3 plane build requirement to prove a design and skill and to discount luck. I mean, the winner should be able to explain his winning.
Hi guys, just saw a demo of a nazi rocket engine ...cool enough running to be 3d printed ...now if only someone could build a airframe ...hydrogen peroxide and potassium permanganate... well it is a crazy challenge, your up to the task, and potassium is good for the grass ... Invision if you would a green camo plane launched from a break away undercarriage, with a cool stream of purple exhaust spewing from the back . Take care.
