Poor Paul... He's one of the few guys in music who truly has a Wonderful Sense of Humor and the ability to laugh at himself. Class Never Goes Out of Style...
Us 80s kids were truly blessed to experience this music first time round. Every radio station had this track playing, and everyone in earshot was either tapping their feet, singing along, or doing a little dance. Truly was the best of times.
Everything about this song is absolutely spiffing and the video's fun too,but listening to it again I was really enjoying the playing by the band of,as far as I'm aware,African musicians.
Yeah best is you dont get to tired from hearing it 😊. (Short Joke: what do Albert Georg Harold Reginald Montgomery - Fitzbottom say to his Friends? ... ... "You can call me Al") 😂

I remember (30+ years ago) buying "Graceland" for this song. I really had no idea what the rest of the album was like. After playing the entire album through, I was overwhelmed...this was a true masterpiece! I quickly became addicted to this unique and magical music. More than three decades later, I remain totally captivated by Paul Simon's "Graceland".
I'd put it in the top 10 albums of the 1980s...top 100 all time. It was so different and amazing when it came out...the difference between typical performer and great artist is stark.
Yeap. Chevy was never one doing the "loud" stunts, he just... was. And at his best, you could have a good time watching him do his comedy, without even laughing that much. One of the greats, for sure.
Norm (mcDonald) calls him the "king of physical comedy" - I agree. If you dont understand, just write a long letter, then shove it up your -Wait, what? Oh your that LandShark M/Fer...
Was a great Paul Simon Album. My Oncle brought it by and told my Mom, his Sister, to listen to it. I listened more than she. Its lot od years ago and i had in in my head. Great Album.
I am because this was the subject of a question on a TV quiz I watched yesterday evening. The question was something like "Who could call him Al in the song You Can Call Me Al?" One guy suggested 'Buddy' and was told close but no cigar.
This song played every day that I worked while I was a courtesy clerk at Safeway. It was a fun job while it lasted. This song brings back all of the amazing memories that me and my co workers created together on the clock
Love it but I had to turn the volume dial up to nearly the max for playing this - not least because the volume level of the sound on this video is rather on the quiet side!
Paul Simon is not a guy who you usually think of as having a sense of humor, but he is subtly hilarious here. He starts to sing "A man walks down - " but then realizes, to his mild surprise, that he's not the one supposed to be singing. He twiddles his thumbs. When Chevy is "singing" the na-na-na part, the look on Paul's face says he really wants to be singing but he knows he's not supposed to. Great song, and an incredibly fun simple video.
This song will always have immense sentimental value to me, Dad used to play it growing up along with a bunch of other Paul Simon songs. It's coming up on a year since he lost his battle with cancer and I play & appreciate this song more than ever.
Tim Dwyer Same here. Thought I wrote this myself for a moment. Instant tears. My father lost his battle in March of this year tho but still relevant. I'm sorry for your loss. Cancer sucks!
LindaBkrWms Me, too. He's really funny in this video like when he sets the water glass down on the drum stand and of course it just falls through. I used to have a crush on him. I think he is very good looking.
LindaBkrWms Have you ever done that knee-dancing thing? My cousin and I went to my brother's wedding. We were not welcome. So we decided to just have fun and not care. We went out on the dance floor - two women - and danced and danced and I am one lousy dancer so we did that knee dancing and just goofed around. It was a blast.
My son was born 7 months after my father's passing. I have always told my boy that grandpa is his bodyguard. He is now 28 yrs of age and still calls my dad his bodyguard. My son loves this song as do I, it brings my dad close again!
I love the bass on this song, and the whole album to that extent, Bakithi Kumalo is an amazing bassist, and I love the almost upright sound of his playing
I just saw Bakithi and his band play it live at a park in King of Prussia, PA, and they let him do that bass break twice because it’s so awesome. Everybody was out of their seats and dancing. It’s truly a showstopper and they nailed it
Damn last few notes all in one breathe.. amazing and when she paused and heard the crown. The humbleness in her eyes and the love and pride she felt amazing... Absolutely amazing. Bravo..
Is it just me, or would it be so epic to see Simon and Chase do a long over due reunion and recreate this video! My inner childhood would definitely be ecstatic:)
Why would anyone want a rehash that would likely be inferior to the original as both men are very old and less likely to be as animated? We have the original, what is the point of recreating it when it'd be unlikely to improve on the classic?
@@lloydrodriguez9969tell that to people that still spend 100s of dollars to go see bands like kiss, Aerosmith, Stones, etc... I've even spent a good amount to see Ozzy many times first with his No more tours tour and like 6 times in early 2000s at Ozzfest, hell I even went and saw the Cure in the mid 2000s just bc the band members are old doesn't mean they can't still rock
I grew up listening to Paul Simon with my dad. He'd pop the Graceland cassette in whatever he was driving and we'd crank it and sing together. 8 or 10 year old me loved every minute.
This makes me think of my dad. He passed away 12 years ago. It’s fascinating how music can take you straight back to memories and make them almost so real again.

Why...why did you do this?! You know how the majority of the people are on the internet...get ready to get corrected 1000 times. Lol...made me laugh though!
Simple and yet transcendent. Paul Simon captures the magic of existence that is available to those of us who are willing to plunge into life and let ourselves go.
Love this song: The names in the song came from an incident at a party that Simon went to with his then-wife Peggy Harper. French composer and conductor Pierre Boulez, who was attending the same party, mistakenly referred to Paul as "Al" and to Peggy as "Betty", inspiring Simon to write a song.
They played this at my summer camp at meal times. I would freak out every time, it was so good. I couldn't understand why everyone else wasn't floored by how good this song is
Could you imagine this song arrangement without Bakithi Kumalo on fretless bass? One of the most underrated bassist in the world. Vocals, horns and rhythm section sounds amazing!
I'll never forget when I worked retail as a kid and my metal-head manager was obsessed with the song because of it's bassline. It never struck me until a few years later that Bakithi is absolutely slaying this thing
This is sheer nostalgia... back when MTV popped up for the first time and was a sort of Muppets TV for teenagers, bathed in California sunshine, pastel color palettes and soft camera filters
I grew up listening to this song and it still gives the "good feeling'' i used to get listening to it back in the day.. It just has this groove that just makes you move and nod your head subconsciously.. This song has probably the most recognisable, catchiest tune out there with the brass sections in the chorus and the slap bass line. I wonder how old Paul was in this video though coz he looks young! The video concept was really unique, goes with the weird lyrics.. and the appearance by Chevy lip sinking and doing funny stuff just makes it even more hilarious.. A real classic this one 👍🔥🔥

Yeap. Chevy was never one doing the "loud" stunts, he just... was. And at his best, you could have a good time watching him do his comedy, without even laughing that much. One of the greats, for sure.

Very odd I woke up with song in head, had to Google it as couldn't get the song name only part of lyrics, very strange.
One of my earliest memories of my childhood...my mom LOVED this song🥰🥰🥰

Simple and yet transcendent. Paul Simon captures the magic of existence that is available to those of us who are willing to plunge into life and let ourselves go.
Love this song: The names in the song came from an incident at a party that Simon went to with his then-wife Peggy Harper. French composer and conductor Pierre Boulez, who was attending the same party, mistakenly referred to Paul as "Al" and to Peggy as "Betty", inspiring Simon to write a song.
