This album was every car journey as a kid , thanks Dad
Me too!! Except with mom :) perfect road trip album
I hope there are thousands of us out there!
Haha true, I thought it were just me and my brothers on the long road!
I second that 100%
Oh yeah. No childhood roadtrip was complete without this.
I remember hearing Graceland at the age of 14. My mom would play that album all of the time. As a african american at that age I was so taken by his respectful incorporation of african tongues into his songs. My mom would play music by Ladysmith Black Mambazo so when I heard them on this album I developed such a profound respect for Paul Simon, as an Artist and his ability to tell a story within the song. I lost my MIND when I saw him in concert one summer in Columbia Maryland (can't remember the year). I play Paul Simon any time my soul needs to rest from aggravation, while painting, or just to be in a sublime mood. Thank you Mr. Simon.
Mr. Simon's love of this music goes easy back. His mother and child reunion was the first (ska, i hope that's correct) early reggae hit in America.
kwakuhle sisi omuhle
I went to see him in Columbia Maryland as well in 2018 or 2017 and it was life changing
Nice nice peace fulllllll
@@roro6320 Must have been at Merriwether Posr Pavilion during the summer
I can't believe Paul is in his 80s... I got Graceland for my 15th birthday. I'm in my 50's now. Where did the time go? Any youngster reading this, take note LIVE, LOVE, EVERYDAY! Time flies by, then all those things that you promised you'd do become harder because of joints, eyes, pain and life getting in the way. I ignored this advice back in my day. You probably will do too.. or will you??
❤ 💕
For me, with my S.A past (made but not much time there) I love this.
I too agree with you
I used to look up to my father for Christmas clothes, can't believe today my kids now looking up to me for their Christmas clothes now Life is a circle live in peace and take care of yourself
I played this album almost everyday when I was pregnant in 1988 with my daughter and my husband and I danced and danced all around the family room. After my daughter was born she recognized this music and loved this album. It was such a joyous time. I miss her so much.
Where is your daughter now?
Beautiful. You are a good writer. Straight to the point yet poignant, with a hint of mystery and heartbreak. I love this song and the whole album as well.
@@johnrose5759 My daughter has estranged herself from me and her Dad going on three years now with no real explanation. She lives 3 hours away from us.
I'm so sorry to hear that, family is so important. Hopefully she'll come back to you xx

When I was a desperate mother of 3 children under the age of 5, one newborn with serious medical issues, I would play this song and dance with my babies to relieve stress in 1988 West Hollywood.
I hear you. I had a disabled child and nothing in bank account to get to Dr but this was so good to listen to in time of trials.
And where was your husband?
I remember standing on my dads feet as a small child while he danced with me to this song. My best memory. I'm sure it kids feel the same
How nice you had this song as a source of happiness and comfort. Hope you guys got out of those circumstances. Oh, ha, missed the "1988" part :)
Kanyea Kweh Oulaye there’s not always a husband in the picture, doesn’t need to be. Sure she was great mum all herself and hope everyone’s still going and healthy
I remember listening to this on the radio when i was a child in Kenya, East Africa. Paul Simon brought warmth to many African people who were going through struggle and suffering at a time when many African Countries were being ravaged by civil wars and apartheid
Kenya had been independent since 1963 ( Dec 12th if I recall!). So what kind of struggle were you battling with 23 years later?
Graham Ball independence ≠ peace and civility

I watched this with my sister so many times. It was our youtube therapy when we were down. I miss her so much. Jennifer Brown July 21 1955 -January 21 2021. Poochie I hope you are walking on streets of gold with diamonds on the soles of your shoes.
I'm so sorry for your loss..
♥️
She is still with you.
Thank you, Paul Simon, for sharing the beauty of African culture on this album. Zulu is such a beautiful language that is rarely heard/listened to by English speakers, especially in the US.
Growing up in south africa in the 80s, this was a God send. the end of apartheid was at the end of the tunnel, but this kind of music showed us that people if people of different races and backgrounds could get together we could make rhythm like no other.
I agree. Something about seeing black and white artists together warms my heart. It's just said how majority of Afrikaners look down on black music...
LBM had a whole new audience after this album. One of the best records ever.
and it's why I recently knew, here in new york city, that I wanted to take a gumboot dance class with a teacher in South Africa! Keep building the bridges.
I remember being at the laundromat thirty years ago and reading in the daily paper of my city that Mandela had been released. It was freezing outside and the ground was covered with snow (in Ohio) but I felt so warm. It was like a miracle.
@@MsLogjam Beautiful memory.

100 years - or maybe even 1000 years- from now, some kid somewhere will first hear this song and the rest of this album, and he'll be blown away and go around raving about it to everyone he can find. The beauty of the music and lyrics is timeless.
Honestly, that's me right now. I'm 25 and just discovered this album a couple of months ago, and I'm obsessed. I'm telling everybody about it.
At this rate, the human race will be dead in 1000 years

Graceland by Paul Simon is probably among the best and most significant albums in my lifetime so far. Paul Simon is a world treasure. After 30 years, this album still gets me going. In a word, it's a masterpiece.
I could say the same for his album, _There Goes Rhymin' Simon_. God bless Paul Simon! May he live long -- his songs definitely will.
I couldn't have said it better myself. My parents had it on vinyl, then years later I got it on CD. Graceland remains one of the, if not the, greatest and most consistently enjoyable albums I know, without doubt. And this song is probably the best one on there.
Easily. I am so privileged to have seen the Graceland tour twice - once, in the fourth row at Radio City Music Hall, with Miriam Makeba and Hugh Masekela. One of my all time favorite records.
You lucky devil!
GildaLee27 Wristband is a good album.
Howard jone
This is the greatest bassline of all time. The bass literally makes this song what it is.
It is incredible but I think the interplay between Bakithi and Ray Phiri take the music to even greater heights than just the bass line alone.
this track is mastered beautifully. it sounds absolutely amazing on a good system. the highs / lows and the vocals and the reverb they used on it all is spectacular.
haha greatest bassline of all time. You lead a sheltered life.
bought a fretless just to play this
Ray Phiri has just passed away
I love the African rhythms and tones of this album, it's just beautiful.
When I was 15 years old my father and I had terrible differences.
But then Graceland came out, we listened together, and somehow, it made everything right again!
Thank you for making that happen.
To this day, I (almost) exclusively listen to African music! Changed my life!
"Ah, the power of music is something else."
What I love about Paul Simon is the way he dresses up complex issues like consumerism and classism (and racism) and puts them in a musical package so divine you can help but listen. Even if you don't get the undertones at first, they will eventually unwrap themselves through repeated listens. Music is the most potent way to change the world, and he's done a tremendous job of it.

What was the story in this song?
I love that this song will forever remind me of my dad. Sitting in the front seat of his 97’ Taurus while he explained the lyrics to me and sang along.... its some of my favorite memories. Every time I hear this I’m transported back to being my ten year old self when my dad was my superhero and nothing else mattered. He is still my superhero, but while we are all getting older I’m just thankful to have these memories. Thank you Paul.
That's a nice memory, paints a picture 👍
Sarah Smith just like me and my dad. Me asking what is the meaning off this song. And him just looking at me and explaining the mean off this song

My dad, too! He let me borrow this CD and I fell in love with it.
Oh my! Same here. This song reminds me of my dad,it was one of his favs when we were growing up in the 90's.

Dad,
If for some reason you see this, thank you for sharing such great music with me! I love you
From an Irish Dad & a Belizean Mom, I can't begin to express how hard this song hits me.
This was revolutionary. What a stroke of genius to include the African sounds of Ladysmith Black Mambazo.
Rob Kates It would be better if Ladysmith Black Mambazo were actually *mentioned* in the video description. They got a lot of attention when the song came out, but these days we only hear Paul Simon.
I agree, they should have credit since they made this song really stand out.

hey rob thank you! I've been trying to find out the name of those guys forever!

This is Simon's best song, and I'm tired of pretending it's not.
It's not.
Even though my childhood was terrible, marked by violence, hatred and humiliation, I also associate it with good things, like Paul Simon's music. My mother listened to the album Graceland up and down every day. I remember Paul's voice giving me goosebumps then and now, but also enveloping me with love and energy. One of the best albums of all time.
I'm so sorry. You are a joy and a survivor.
My heart is broken watching this now. Tata Shabalala was instrumental in me loving our very diverse South African music. This was my jam. Tatu Shabalala and Jonny Clegg brought Zulu music to us

thanks friend, I am a WASP, I loathe that word- I am just me, from Canada and I always loved American blues and Bob Marley but then I began searching through people like Simon, and Cooder and Taj Mahal and I fell in love with REAL African music, what you never hear on the radio- you are blessed to come from such a rich culture, Canada has become the country it is because of our immigrants, bless all of you. *Im not denying the lyricism mastery but Mr. Simon without that band and those amazing backing vocals wont be the same. Africa brings joy to Humanity.*
That’s the point of this whole album.
The beats that made this a classic was provided by a Ghanaian producer... the Ghanaian highlife is evident
I've said it before and I'll say it again, Paul Simon is a Genius. My first time hearing Cecilia, I was four and my babysitter brought the record and we danced. My true love of MUSIC began. 50 yrs later, and I still love everything this man has shared. Thanks( for the memories) Paul. ❤

Paul Simon puts a touch of detail on his songs. So deep,. So spiritual. Some people learn music, Paul Simon is born with Music. He does it as easy as an eagle soars and lion roars.
I should never stop to be grateful to my dear friend, whom I asked one day: "Hey man, I'm looking for a great album, what do you suggest?" and he replied: "Well of course, Graceland by Paul Simon: I felt in love with it!" - God knows he was right.

How long have you been listening to my music??
❤ this song! I grew up in New Zealand in the 1980s, my dad played the Graceland album all the time (and still has it on Compact Disc.)
I remember hearing about the Springbok tour protests in Auckland which was a huge protest against apartheid and it closed a football stadium and caused riots on the streets in New Zealand. I spoke to a colleague who is the same age as me who grew up in South Africa and he heard absolutely nothing about these or any other anti-apartheid protests overseas until 1994 when apartheid fell.
Incredible times and this music brings me great memories of growing up in that era.
There have been so many classic albums in my lifetime: Rumours. The Dark Side of the Moon. Graceland is up there with the very best of them.
I remember this playing on the radio when I was a courier back in 1987. It was always fun to sing along and see the strange looks I'd get from people in other cars, I didn't mind; I was a rock star while I drove.

If you listen to some of the newest artists, you will notice that some of the sounds are starting to make the 60's, 70's and 80's back, both the rhythms and voices are blending. It's bringing back the best of times. I hope these new artists continue this trend, since it was the best singing I can think of throughout the decades.
One of my favorite albums and also the absolute genius Paul Simon.

What a beautiful song... this song gives me the most desirable feelings... it is a medicine for my soul, which I have been prescribing to myself since I heard it. the music, the rhythm, the melody, the story, and that rebellious bassline. Wow!
