This Song Never Fades. Thumbs up if you agree
I was driving a bus in London in 1990, it was the number 24. I was on my last run to Hampstead Heath late one night.. I had maybe 5 passengers on board. I stopped at Tottenham court road tube station just past the junction of Oxford Street.. There were about 20 black guys standing waiting for the bus, they got on for Camden Town, and they started to sing as I was pulling away from the stop, as Graceland was one of my favourite ever albums I recognised the voices immediately.. It was the African guys from the Paul Simon tour.. No mobile phones in those days, just the best memory of the best bus journey I ever did... I will never forget it.
You were one lucky person. I wish I had been on that bus.
Makes me want to get rid of car and do all my travelling via bus ✨😘
Excellent story!!
MARVELLOUS, TOONMAN!!! I wish I have been there, on your last run to Hampstead Head !!!!
Ladysmith Black Mambazo were one of the best things about that record.
I was raised by a humble pastor/ kindergarten teacher and nurse - but my father and mother were rich in friends who played tons music and I was obsessed with this concert watched it on repeat
In 1993 I was traveling through east Africa in a truck with a bunch of backpackers. Late afternoon set up camp in the middle of nowhere, no one in sight for miles, and when the sun went down we put this tape on (we only had a dozen or so tapes on the truck, Graceland was one of them). Within minutes about 7 or 8 kids from 6-15 yrs old appeared from seemingly nowhere, and we all danced around the fire. One of the great memories of my life.
I cut school in early 1987 to get in line outside of Radio City Music Hall to get tickets to the Graceland tour. I was number 300-something, but when I got to the ticket window, because I was only looking to buy one ticket, I got a seat in the fourth row, dead center. Simon, Ladysmith, Hugh Masekela and Mama Africa, Miriam Makeba rocked my 17 year old world. I was also high at the time, which just heightened the entire experience. I also saw them in December of 1987 at Madison Square Garden at a benefit show, so I really saw the Graceland Tour twice. It was magnificent.
JoshDone *sigh* will you marry me?
JoshDone Sounds truly amazing and I am painfully jealous, though I wasn't yet even close to being alive at that point! I'm still getting over how amazing it was seeing Paul Simon perform this with Bakithi Kumalo on bass last night in London on his Paul Simon and Sting tour...Lady Smith weren't there but it was still just as magical!
JoshDone You win!
JoshDone you win at life. like, all the way.
@RapunzelinOttawa - Yes! And also because I am an American-Canadian dual citizen, LOL.
Did you ever have tears stream down your face when you experience something incredibly beautiful?
Everybody here knows exactly what I'm talking' about.
There are no words for Nicole..........
I sure understand the tears...music transcends all cultural differences...the story behind this song is moving.
I only heard this song for the first time yesterday and ngl I leaked a few tear
Thanks a lot I already love this Song .But Never Saw the Concert IS Something I Can not explain It Strange feeling May be malinconico thanks a lot🌟
"Everybody here knows exactly what I'm talking' about."
:-)
This was the bravest move for Paul Simon - taking no notice of adverse opinions and using beautiful musicians to create this wonderful sound
I had a dream about my mom last night (she passed in '13) and she was giving away her possessions and moving. She had painted poems and large green leaves all over the walls of her apartment. I understood in the dream that she was moving to South Africa. When I awoke, trying to make sense of what I dreamed, I heard this song in my mind. She loved this song and loved this album. Thank you.
Watching this again inspires me to believe the world peace is indeed possible.
There's no doubt that Paul Simon is a great talent ,but the African sound and movement are out of this world.
Absolutely! Without the African talent this would just be another song.
Yolande Augustine yep that rubber Bass and heavily chorused guitar sound can instantly take you there
Laawae R That’s what Paul did so well, he knew exactly what this song needed to be special. He recognised the unbelievable talent of these people and the sound they create and gave it a platform to lift his work.
Certainly that Africa sound made it a great song.. 😊
Paul Simon is still the genius behind this song, as he is with the rest of the album.
This music was a hit in the late 80s Liberia. I am here in 2023 again. Brings back memories.
That base player is out of this world. Amazing.
The undying awesomeness of Mr. Bakithi Kumalo on fretless bass. Stirringly emotive!!
I'm an amateur bassist. Don't know whether to feel inspired or whether to throw away my base in sorrow over being so very, very far from such REAL skill. So bloody effortless fretless perfection.
All of these musicians are exceptional, but I find myself going back to the close up of his fret-less bass playing, which is exceptional.
I find his skills a bit hard to comprehend, he’s just absolutely incredible
@@samseptember6404 He is truly amazing I agreee
@@magnushasselqvist2862 No.. don't throw your bass away. Keep practising !!
That bass line though...Damn! Mr. Bakithi Kumalo you're a genius.
I agree 💯. Since the 80s I still remember it! That's how ICONIC the bass line on this song was.
The guitarist as well!! Thats such a difficult riff o play live!
My grandfathet would play this whole concert everyday... i sat and watched with him... the love of music grew
My faith became my father. ! . I lost 7 members of my family back in the previous covid restrictions.
One of my youngest brothers Dave, who collected every album of Simon & Garfunkel . He recently passed away suddenly in October 2023.
My youngest brother finds that life is not worth living without his brother .
Hes recieving professional help. !.
To me life is too short for fall outs, unforgiveness, and misunderstandings.
Thankyou For Your Selflessly Sharing Your Music With Us Sir Paul Simon, With Hope , Love & Respect sent from Toxteth Liverpool UK 🇬🇧🫡🇯🇪💖
Paul Simon, Hugh Masekela, Ladysmith Black Mambazo, Miriam Makeba, Ray Phiri...who am i forgetting? This concert had legends. Rest In Peace, Ray Phiri & Miriam Makeba
Mokgatla Molepo uhh Baikithi Khumalo on Bass... listen to the bass only track and will see why...
Mokgatla Molepo And Hugh Masekela on the Trumpet 🙁
The phenomenal Barney Rachabane on sax. The other sax player is, I think, Mike Bami Rose (ex-Cymande).
Joseph has followed his brother tracks... from here to there where we all will meet..
@Mokgatla Molepo - Isaac Mtshali on drums
the bassist is absolutely killing!
Still is in 2024 💖🥰
This concert Was Hosted and Recorded LIVE In Harare Zimbabwe . Tnis wqs my first introduction to Zimbabwe. As a 10 yr old and today almoat 30yrs later I live in Zimbabwe all the way from Cameroon . 🤩🤩😛😛😛

And what a life. Great man.
I completely agree!!!
My parents attended this concert in Harare. Such a good a time to be Zimbabwean! You can see the Zim rain storm in the background- so many great memories.
The bass line carries this song...masterful!
Unbelievable bass line. I was listening to "You can call me Al" again yesterday. First time in years. It hit me: the bass line carries that song, too. The chorus is great, of course. But, man ... that bass line is on another level. Unreal.
Bhakiti Kumalo
Wow. You’re right dude.
Bhakiti Kumalo is the living legend.
My love for bass.
They don't make songs like this anymore 💔
My hair stands on end, my body fills instantly with happiness, I smile, I dance around my living room. God bless you Paul Simon and his entourage. This music is good for the soul.
Ho yes !
Bang on point!…Couldn’t agree more!!
Amen lady!!!! Me too dancing around. My all-time favorita song!
Timeless

Makes me so proud to be South African ! Ladysmith Black Mambazo such a talented group!
Yep. There is no one this world with the crazy mind to dislike this song
Thank you for telling me the name of this group! :)
You should be proud to be South African! The strongest people in history!
I could feel the love and joy! It must have been a spectacular event to be a part of.
Together with Ray Phiri and Hugh Masekela..... RSA🇿🇦🇿🇦🇿🇦🇿🇦
I know a 5 years old that loves this song. He is my grandson 😊
My father ex R.A.F. pilot got stopped on the way back from Paul's Concert, our soldiers of the Rd. asked if it was a good concert and he replied "yes" -first points on his licence. He still came home with a smile on his face.Thank-you Paul!
RIP Joseph Shabalala (1941-2020)
A true giant and freedom fighter.
When I was younger and filled with hate and vitriol I loathed this type of music
Then I got sober put down the heroin and grew a heart
This concert and Peter Gabriel song Biko changed my outlook on other people and their struggles and pain and made me realize I should be grateful for all I have and went through
Thank you to Ladysmith Black Mambazo & Mr. Paul Simon for this magical performance! 💎💃🏻

The percussionist is a Ghanaian gentleman called Okyerema Asante. He is a one man riot squad and such an inspiration.
If you are ever feeling down, just listen to some Paul Simon.

Am here today to listen to my dads dad's favorite songs in 2022 am 23years old im feeling the songs all the way from kenya very represented 🇰🇪
Ladysmith Black Mambazo is a male choral group from South Africa that sings in the vocal styles of isicathamiya and mbube. They rose to worldwide prominence as a result of singing with Paul Simon on his album, Graceland, and have won multiple awards, including four Grammy Awards. They were formed by Joseph Shabalala in 1960 and later became one of South Africa's most prolific recording artists, with their releases receiving gold and platinum disc honors. The group has now become a mobile academy, teaching people about South Africa and its culture.
thanks for the info!
M. Stefanovic wow cheers for the info
Paul Simon is a damn genius.
That African band is out of this world.
My love for bass started right here, big ups bakhithi khumalo
man straight up Africans bring the rhythm. One day I shall return to my homeland. Listening to this makes me reminisce my earlier years spent moving around western Africa. In Senegal my dad has this whole concert on VHS and for a few years it was my only source of music. You can say I fuxx with Paul and the wonderful crew
Look at you in 1987..your talent and sharing with these other folks is just mind blowing and carried out through the years....wowie wow you are so fine Paul!

Rufaro Stadium Harare, 87 we were there. Bhakiti Khumalo thrashing the life out of the bass. Yes man
That bass player is killing it on the fretless!
The man on the lead guitar is perfectly skilled. He strums it with the gusto of a maestro. The dances are rhythmic. More of you Paul Simon. Rest in power great Shabalala Joseph🇰🇪✌️👌💋💯❤️
The lead guitarist is Ray Phiri. He was a leader of a band called Stimela, one of the best groups to have ever been assembled in South Africa 🇿🇦.

Love isn't a strong enough word to explain what this moment in time means to me.
Thank you Paul. Some say you took their music. I say you gave us their soul.
After seeing this concert in Africa.. I see what I knew all along.. our beautiful brothers in Africa are very much Appreciative of music 🎶
Who can bring those days it was hard but happy days. i am crying now R.I P bawo Tshabalala just thinking your role to build SA with your songs
I bought one of the first copies released in the Netherlands of the Graceland album and all tracks move me to the bone, well lately in tears. It is not for any negative relation with the songs, it is just that the music moves me to such heights into an unconscious piece inside of me which simply cannot express it in words and then releases tears. And it gets astronomical heights when I see Paul Simon performing live with these fantastic South African musicians. Thank you, all musicians who contributed to the Graceland album, you unveiled a treasure to the whole world.
We constantly listen to this type of music in Africa... Big shout out to our musicians.
I’d like to learn more about this type of music. Where should I start? Thank you!!!
I envy you.
i was in primary school when this music was played just to demonstrate how music from south Africa sounds like and that's the only reason i still have a good memory of this misic and one thing that is great about it was the teacher ask us all to give him a guess of a music sung by a group named the Graceland and i straight away said the Graceland which was Paul Simons and that's why I still remember correctly that is Graceland by Paul Simon,💪💪✌️👍 and since then i still remember that 💪💪❤
The royalty of SA music. Ray Phiri, Hugh Masekela, Ladysmith Black Mambazo etc
One of the Best!! I'm Old & this is Real Music!
Could make for interesting dancing shoes. And, I'm headed to the Gulf Coast!!
The energy in this concert is indescribable!
I have a Diamond in my heart......
Wouldnt trade it for anything!
Rest in Peace - Joseph Shabalala your voice will not be forgotten.
One of the best songs written, performed and executed from one of the best albums ever made.

I'm with you ! .. Fantastic sound !
I'm with all of you. I want the bass.
Yeah man. That bass player is ON!
That bassist tho, spot on and I want that fretless. :)
Bakithi Kumalo
Joseph Tsabalala and Ladysmith Black Mambazo are amazing. I thought they were underrated until I tried to get a ticket for their concert here in London a few years ago. It was at the Royal Albert Hall and the cheapest tickets were £200!!! Clearly the London elite do not consider them underrated at all!!! They are more costly than the Rihanna's and Beyonce's...with a small exclusive audience.
Always a musical genius
I'm proud to say that I was there in 1987 in Harare to witness such an electrifying concert
Just passing through to pay tribute to Joseph Shabalala. My dad brought home Graceland when I was 8 or 9 and I've loved LBM ever since. My kids love this song for the whimsical melody and the booming backing vocals, but most of all for the dancing. I had wanted to name my daughter after one of their songs, but alas was outvoted.
Hopefully tonight you are sharing music with your wife and brothers.
The bass guitar is speaking !!!!!
Wonderful !!!!!
Love this Song,😇🤩🥰
Absolutely amazing. When I first heard this music I was Taken. So beautifully amazing 22 years ago
at 2:45 is the baddest bass line and so well executed...makes me smile every time!
This Comment should be pinned.. total glory bass
Bass throughout the whole song, honestly! Keeps me coming back.
Bass melody so good!
Kumalo is too good 👍🏾
Great, but today 30 years on the country is in ruins..Diamonds are on the shoe's of the totally corrupt...the poor are poorer the ANC feeds of the poor.
All of these musicians are absolutely mind blowing... But my mans on that fretless bass is fuckin shit up and lookin happy as shit without even thinking about it
Now retiring - these moments will always stay with us - luckily I have gotten my daughter and husband into the Chicago performance - nose bleed - but they are in....
Always beautiful in my heart, best moments with my late awesome dad #motiga#
he is so gifted..as he grew in his music
he became quite the humanitarian...

Graceland Concert in Harare, Zimbabwe featuring Paul Simon, Ladysmith Black Mambazo, Hugh Masekela and company. Remember that day as if it was yesterday.
Yes... my first concert😍
It would have been my first concert too except I got stuck on the Ross farm pegging a tobacco field for Gwaza. All my mates got to go, I was stuck in the thunderstorm in the back ground. By the way, it was 1985, not 1987. Go Mbare. I did make it to the Bruce Springsteen concert in 87, all the way from Umvukwes along with the 18700 SA folk who crossed the border for it..
What a great memory
@@lylemclean581 100% it was 1987. Feb 14th and 15th. I was in Harare on holiday and there was an article in The Herald complaining about high ticket prices which I think were 5ZWD which at the time I think was 3USD. Seems so cheap now. I never went. Springsteen was 1988 BTW. apnews.com/article/d839f735a593b5f7ac0c57d34989ea41
