The way Paul looks at Miriam: sheer admiration and joy of being able to sing this song with this grand lady of south african music
You saw that as well....wonderful song
Absolutely amazing
Other the other way round ...
And when she starts her solo, that look of admiration and quietly backing away, giving her the spotlight at his show. Total respect.
That's my favorite part of the video.
This is actually quite symbolic because Miriam was emerging from deep depression here following the loss of her only child.
Wow. That’s beautiful.. her emerging from depression thru music ❤
People.may not be aware of how ground-breaking this album was at the time. Many in Europe and the US has never given South African music a second thought. It advanced world music in leaps and bounds.
Yes 😊
Both Paul and Miriam deserve to be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. This album IS a classic. Anyone out there with me....?
How did it change anything other than aware of another kind of music? (I grew up on Simon and Garfunkel, so, yeah. I remember this is a major album in our history. I don't, however, see anyone giving South African music or its music a second thought now.)
YESS, stuck out totally !! I think many, even didnt realise how good this album was. It was just pleasant. Today , at least myself how original it was and exellent.
my father hates music completely, he heard this album from my room and hasnt stopped listening to it for 30 years
This is the kind of world I want to live in, a world white or black live in harmony, make babies together and live side by side on equal standings, Paul Simon and Miriam 😍❤️ goosebumps
I hear you brother that would be an awesome duo to go on tour together.
alhamdullilah..
you took the word's out of my mouth brother !
☺
@@michaelharrington5084 Yes: alhamdullilah... brings me to tears.
Me too..
Yep, also a world where all those musicians you see on that stage got totally screwed on royalties and writing credits by Paul Simon. That's the real world - the rest is lights and costumes - i.e. BS.
Miriam Makeba needs to get credit for her awesome harmonies, 'scat whispers' and beauty of her culture!!!!!!!!!!! Ray Phiri (RIP) on lead guitar.............
She was brilliant here hey👌🏾
@@ntuthukondlela8224 Mama Afrika!
@@ntuthukondlela8224 when was she never brilliant? God used this woman to sing through.
Agreed. She’s amazing! Better than Linda on the original
Absolutely. Def the best version of this song I've heard. Her soul compensates for Simon's lack of soul.

He had massive respect for her, enough to change his own lyric "from Tucson Arizona" to her own hometown.
It was Tuscon when Linda Ronstadt sang it with him, her hometown. And that became the default version on the album.
Pure admiration . Around this time I was with severe post partum depression, I was heavily drugged, could hardly lift my head off my pillow, hearing the chatting 💓 in Tswana from my baby's carers, all I was able to do was lift my head from my pillow to murmur a prayer of gratitude to the women of Africa. "G-d bless the women of Africa".
Rest in peace Miriam ❤
Hope so much you are feeling better XXXX
With you. Sincere music is the cure. Here you see millions on your joyful wavelength. Relax and go with it, and maybe smile.
I'm in South Africa right now as I listen to this beautiful song 😘 ...From Scotland we love you Africa x

Graceland - Paul Simond ❤️❤️❤️❤️...
Me i Have see it in TV with my Mother great Concert
Rest in Peace Mama Afrika. Thank you Paul Simon.
I don't care what people say but to me, Paul Simon is the best songwriter ever by a country mile. I was hooked from the moment I heard The Boxer for the first time as a child in the mid-80s. My mother bought me all of Simon and Garfunkel's and Paul Simon's albums and I've been addicted ever since.
Well, Ed, this'll blow your jock off: he wrote that back in the 60s! His stuff sure lasts, don' it?
As you say The Boxer and Graceland: that´s more than enough to say: Thanks Paul.
William Phinizy I'm well aware of when every song was written but it would have been hard for me to have heard The Boxer when it was released because I wasn't alive yet. :-) I was quite young when I first heard it though and appreciated it far more than any other artist I had heard to that point. I literally know every word to every Simon and Garfunkel song and I don't think I can say that about any other artist (I even know all their Tom and Jerry stuff which I love because I have a certain appreciation for fifties music). I don't know how it's possible to listen to an album like Parsley, Sage, Rosemary and Thyme or Bridge Over Troubled Water and not want to start them over as soon as they end.
+Ed Gloss im right there with you, i learned about Paul from the muppet show of all places and got hooked with the song Long Long Day, from that day ive been utterly obssesed with Mr simon, and at one point had all of his solo album songs on my mp3 player and nearly all of the simon and garfunkel songs. Truly an inspiration for me, and has helped me through some really difficult times.
+Ed Gloss While I agree with you, Paul Simon is by far my favorite, there are other giants of song writing out there. Such as Jackson Browne. Honestly though off the top of my head hes the only person I can think of that even comes close.
Graceland helped us all discover the incredible rhythms of african music ,and be more aware of an evil at that time in South Africa, called ',apartheid .'' God bless us all and all the courageous people who fought against racism in their lifetimes .Peace n' Love-Eric xxxxxxx.

This is gorgeous, big, moving, gentle, powerful, and so well sung! Miriam Makeba looks so happy. A couple of the songs from Graceland are among Mr. Simons best compositions ever.
Shining Africa - your time will come! Water your tree!
I remember listening to this song back in Nigeria as a young boy. Wonderful memories. God bless Africa❤
I love the way Paul looks at Mama Africa with such admiration as they sing together :)
If you can see admiration in that look, then you're working from a different set of perceptions from mine; Paul has no reason in the world for any such admiration. Neither does Miriam. They're both neither more nor less than skilled musicians in a world full of skilled musicians.

summed it up perfectly my man
It always amazed me that Paul Simon was heavily criticized by many in the USA after this concert. I thought to myself...how many people (like myself) discovered the incredible sounds of Miriam Makeba and Ladysmith Black Mambazo because of the Graceland album and this concert?
He did something nobody did at a time with our musicians. Surprising others followed him after this album and shows. He is a legend and someone who was prepared to take risk and paid off
+RobdaVegasMailman people say that he didn't give the Africans any £! He REALLY STIFFED THEM I READ
Totally not true, Paul Simon paid the musicians 5 x scale and gave them all song writer credit. No complaints from any of the Black musicians at all.

Rest In Peace to mama Africa ❤️😍😍. Africa music will never remain this same without ur likes.
I was listening to the Graceland album today. Halfway through "Under the African Skies" I became aware of the clouds made hazy by the Sarahan dust storm and realized that we're under Africa that is literally in the sky right now. 🥰
I sit and write this with tears rolling down my face...Its sad that this will never bee seen again in this life. There isn't anyone like Paul left out there He was a true believer that music would bring anyone together..Look at the garbage being produced out there today, only caring about how much money they can make....
That is so true...the man is a bonefide musical genius with a magic touch. I respect the fact that he put his career in jeopardy by going out on a limb by supporting those cats and still coming out on top....remember...Less is almost always More...
"By supporting those cats?"
You should check out Donovan Copley and Hot Water - not a trbute act to Paul Simon's Graceland but very much in the same vein
huh?
Gideon Mbui listen to the final track on the Graceland album for some insight. “Cats” is slang for musicians between musicians. I’m referring to the black artists he was jamming with. :-)
Unity within music
No hate
Just love & enjoyment

Just when you thought this song couldn’t get better. … Miriam and Paul’s harmonies are exquisite
… and look at the emotional connection between the two of them. Love the throat singing at the end!
I was at their concert in Barcelona and I’ll never forget it, what a pleasure to see Míriam Makeba and Paul Simon together!

Breathtakingly beautiful, Paul is so amazingly talented, yet he's so obviously respectful of the African musicians.
Paul Simon can do no wrong from my perspective. His music is for dancers, those of us with arrhythmia, and ETC. Diamonds on the soles of her shoes was and is one of the GREATEST songs I've ever heard in my long life.

My late mum use to love this song.I listen to Paul Simon Album and Songs.I am dating someone who lives in South Africa and I want to be in South Africa right now he lives in Johnnsaberg area
Miriam Makeba, what a lady! What a lady!
Oh my gosh, what a lady! Where are we ever again going to find such class? What a lady!
What a heart-felt song she delivered, with such elegance, and love. She displayed such a grandiose amount of respect for the audience, and gave the audience a heart-felt song. Yes, she indeed was happy to be back at home!
What a lady!
Miriam Makeba, you have my respect, and from the bottom of my heart I admire the purity of your heart.
What a lady! What a lady!
I very much hope that you are resting in peace, saved by the grace and mercy of the Lord Jesus Christ. I very much hope that it is the case.
Ced Tin Angelique Kidjo has that class too, if I may say so. And I very much hope with you that Miriam Makeba is resting in peace, oh yes. Not too sure about biblical men in heaven though. Although I learned to worship them too as a child.
I fully agree with your sentiment. But you have misused the word "grandiose" which means "Impressive because of unnecessary largeness or grandeur; used to show disapproval". "Grand" or "great" is the word you want.
Amen!
Thank you for posting this song with Paul Simon and Miriam Makeba (her spirit lives forever in her songs) It was a rare treat to hear them perform his song together. I always loved this song.
