- Опубликовано: 23 сен 2012
- The official Sledgehammer video in HD. Directed by Stephen R. Johnson, produced by Adam Whittaker. Claymation, pixilation, and stop motion animation provided by Aardman Animations and the Brothers Quay.
Sledgehammer was the first single from the multi-platinum selling album So, the first of Peter’s studio albums to have a proper title and a watershed release in his career. Its marriage of the artistic and the commercial made for an indisputable success, with the album quickly sitting atop the album charts on both sides of the Atlantic.

You could have a steam train
If you'd just lay down your tracks
You could have an aeroplane flying
If you bring your blue sky back
All you do is call me
I'll be anything you need
You could have a big dipper
Going up and down, all around the bends
You could have a bumper car, bumping
This amusement never ends
I want to be - your sledgehammer
Why don't you call my name
Oh let me be your sledgehammer
This will be my testimony
Show me round your fruitcage
'Cos I will be your honey bee
Open up your fruitcage
Where the fruit is as sweet as can be
I want to be - your sledgehammer
Why don't you call my name
You'd better call the sledgehammer
Put your mind at rest
I'm going to be - the sledgehammer
This can be my testimony
I'm your sledgehammer
Let there be no doubt about it
Sledge Sledge Sledgehammer
I've kicked the habit, shed my skin
This is the new stuff, I go dancing in, we go dancing in
Oh won't you show for me and I will show for you
Show for me, I will show for you
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, I do mean you, only you
You've been coming through
Going to build that power
Build, build up that power, hey
I've been feeding the rhythm
I've been feeding the rhythm
Going to feel that power build in you
Come on, come on, help me do
Come on, come on, help me do
Yeh, yeh, yeh, yeh, yeh, yeh , yeh, yeh, you
I've been feeding the rhythm
I've been feeding the rhythm
It's what we're doing, doing
All day and night
So
Red Rain

I can't even begin to tell you how lucky I feel to have grown up in the golden age of the music video. Sledgehammer was one of the most important videos of its time and still, to this day, carries so much meaning to so many people.
Couldn't agree more. Remember hearing this for the first time and seeing the video. I was just leaving school. The song/video had an impact. Still looks good and sounds fresh as a daisy. I've seen AI videos recently in a sledgehammer style, no doubt done really quickly, but you can see the time and effort here. Awesome stuff.
I was there too.. also, love the horns and synthesizer together
+RonGavalik Well, every tune you listened to and every music video you watched in "your time" can also be watched by my grandchildren - and their grandchildren etc. Regarding music It's definitely an advantage to grow up now and not 40 years ago!
not even Peter Gabriel's best. Big Time is better and Shock the Monkey is both better and more relevant, deeper.
I saw Gabriel in Vancouver 2 months ago, when he did Sledgehammer the roof lifted off the building. We had great night.
Ok but can we talk about how INCREDIBLY well engineered the sound is on this entire album? Properly ahead of its time.
There's a geeky video dissecting the entire production process. Check out "produce like a pro", won't be disappointed!
Exactly why us sound techs use this song to adjust sound systems for concerts.
No time alignment, or auto tune either. It's like people had to have something to sound good before those things were invented. What was that thing? Oh yeah, talent.
@@bradyoung6663 haha exactly!!!!!

Sledgehammer was released in 1986. I remember my graduation year very well!
I’m leaving this comment here, so after a week or a month when someone likes it, I get reminded of this masterpiece!
I'd be honored if some 80s fans would take a listen to my acoustic piano & vocal YT performances of SISTER CHRISTIAN by Night Ranger, IS THIS LOVE by Whitesnake, and RADIO GA-GA by Queen in tribute to the age of legendary power ballads. Live acoustic with no autotune or digital editing. Stay safe and keep on rocking in the '020s.
Borderline brilliant.

I figured as much. Either them or the people who did the opening credits of Pee Wee's Playhouse, since that started airing on Saturday morning TV around the same time, back in the late 80s.

Probably one of the most creative videos of the golden MTV era.
The amount of time and editing it took to make this, considering the state of technology at the time, must have been tremendous.
Kudos to all involved.
My hats are off to the folk in the editing room. They'd have to be absolute wizards of film. I know I've heard big time celebrities rightfully praise them for their mastery of now outdated modes of filmography.
It's stop motion, that's been around for ages, it was nothing new at the time when this video is made.
Stop motion is like the oldest effects technique man, it's been there since the creation of cinema.
It's like Gumby only Gumby was smoother.

This is by far one of the most ICONIC videos of the 80s. I have to save this for my own nostalgia of what great music and videos were like.
Ever since I was 3 years old (born February 1986) I knew one thing.... That when I die, I will consider everything a failure if I don't Stand up out of my body, gain insight into space and time and the meaning of it all, and groove my way stop motion style into the cosmos to forever dance among the stars.......... Literally I saw this video as a very young child, never had so much fun, and then came up with that thought...
I am currently 38 years old, I still watch this and remember the smells of the apartment my parents lived in in the east side of Denver, my first cat, my Dad's old brown Toyota we'd listen to Tapes in (I always begged to hear Boston's self titled album, which I just called, "the alien album" and Bobby Browns "My Prerogative"), Hanging out with my best friend Kristen, Her Dad who was also my Dad's childhood best Friend Nick Cappazola (RIP), , That day when 7 tornadoes touched down in downtown Denver Colorado, That stupid daycare called "The Three Bears Learning Center" I had to go to, and my Great Grandma Herrera and Sunday breakfasts with the family at her house on Avrum St..... (Miss You Dad)
And with all I've learned, with all I know, and with a lifetime to develop deep theological and spiritual beliefs, I will always consider everything a failure if when I die, I don't stand up out of my body, Gain insight into space and time and the meaning of it all, and groove my way stop motion style into the Cosmos to forever dance among the stars......
Please just send me back to the 80's to do it all over again :(

never knew but as I was watching it just now, i remember when this originally came out, I was thinking I bet this was Aardman
Nick park (creator of Wallace and gromit) actually worked on the dancing chickens
I don't understand what made me seek out this classic video as 2023 is coming to an end. Glad I did 😊
Loved it when I was a Teen. Still lovin' it today. Thanks, Peter💝
One of the best grooves of all time. As good as Peter Gabriel is, Tony Levin deserves his mention for the bass track. Unreal and they have so much fun playing this live
According to Peter Gabriel, "Sledgehammer" is what he calls his penis and this is an ode to his penis/sex life.
Levin is a legendary bass player. I'm a big Dream Theater fan and I love his work with Liquid Tension Experiment. He's an integral part of PG's sound as you say, as are David Rhodes, Manu Katche and others (including Phil Collins, for a limited time).
@@robicenco1 His works on King Crimson are phenomenal.
Very much so!
@@yunarukami14 I saw the Double Trio down in Kissimmee Florida in 1995. He and Bill Bruford were amazing.
The 80's would not exist without this song.
It wouldn’t exist without Intruder
Why would you insult such a great song
CLARA ELIA I was moreso getting at the fact that 80’s music is more or less an artistic dumping ground, and if anything this song is a very high watermark.
you all forget Kate Bush, but we forgive you.
When I was 8 I rember this sonĝ
Back when MTV & VH1 actually played music videos...😔😔
I was a little chubby in elementary school. I wanted to shed the chub and look good for middle school. This had just come out on tape!! So- I exercised and danced in my room every day in the afternoon before dinner to this album during the summer between. I knew if I did this stuff before dinner I’d eat less. This album helped me lose a bunch of weight and be healthy. I’m old now..I need to lose some baby weight. Maybe I should use it again! Lol! Thank you Peter Gabriel!!
This is a great song to work out with
..SHED MY SKIN🎶
Awesome.
Come to think of it, I've gotten chunky myself! Time to break out the sledgehammer!!! Thank you Peter Gabriel👍🏻💜 You made my teen years more fun too🎉
Go for it...Black Night!
