  • Steve Coogan and John C. Reilly as Laurel and Hardy performing one final dance to end their show, despite Ollie's critical health condition. Taken from the 2018 motion picture 'Stan & Ollie'.
    I do not own the footage in the video and will not profit from it in any way.

    This scene is pure genius. For a moment, for just a second the movie becomes reality, the characters who inhabit the movie become Stan and Ollie, the shadows, the dance, they become one and indistinguishable from the truth. And that is something that no award can ever come close to commemorating.

    This is one of the last films I got to see in the theater with my dad before he passed away. Usually I didn't care much for my dad's choice in movies; but he'd introduced me to Laurel and Hardy as a kid, and I grew up loving them. So it was a real treat for both of us. It was also the only time in my entire life I could recall him tearing up at a movie. By the end we both had smiles on our faces and tears in our eyes. We both loved the movie so much that I bought myself a Blu Ray copy and him a DVD copy when it came out. It'll always be a tremendously special film for me; and I tear up even more watching this scene now than when I first saw it.

    Focusing on the shadows was a great touch, it turns them into icons, no longer mattering that it isn't really them on stage, the shadows ARE Laurel and Hardy.

    • @michaelheitz6827
      @michaelheitz6827 5 лет назад +20

      It seemed like some kind of apotheosis to me. With the shadows and back silhouettes, their faces were no longer visible. The individual human beings ceased to exist, turning into symbols and legends.

    • @james_fisch
      @james_fisch 4 года назад +6

      I still have my theories on those shadows, and I think it actually reflects who Stan and Ollie are in the present day. Unlike a lot of their competition such as Chaplin, Abbott and Costello, and even the Three Stooges, Laurel and Hardy are still being forgotten about. One of the greatest acts of all time is falling behind in the shadows of the Hollywood legends, even though they had a massive influence on many comedic actors that we still see today. To think that even doing their stage performances, they were becoming less relevant and not selling houses out. I think they'll be forgotten except by those who seek them or grow up watching their work. Coogan and Reilly gave some of the best biographical performances I have ever seen in a movie, to the point that you forget you're watching Coogan and Reilly playing their heroes.

    • @Dustshoe
      @Dustshoe 4 года назад +1

      I wonder if this film should have been made in black and white. Like the recent 'The Artist".
      I think really this film should have been made in the late 1960s, 70s or 80s. The tribute film should have arrived sooner after Stan's death in 1965. It just seems almost a miracle that 'Stan & Ollie' got made in 2018. To me that means there are enough older fans of theirs still clinging on to L&H as a force to be reckoned with. Who still believe in them.
      L&H's shadows or silhouettes that are highlighted in the final scene could, I suppose, tell us that the declining L&H of the movie are mere shadows of what they were twenty years previously. The irony is that their familiar silhouettes are a memorial to their greatness. Or rather they are emblematic of it.
      The influence L&H had on other entertainers and artists, I believe, is profound. And there is an interesting theory that Samuel Beckett had L&H in mind when he wrote Waiting For Godot. The Nobel prize-winning playwright was a known fan of L&H.
      So L&H's shadow reached far and wide. Further than we think. And we search for shadows of them today. Because L&H matter more than ever. The world is rife with cynicism. And a dose of L&H is a tonic, a much needed one. But how? How can they be delivered again to a weary, frenetic audience attuned to macho, gloomy modernity.

      @kallemick 2 года назад +2

      I have just started to realise that if you make something truly ambitious and maybe personal like “Belfast” or “Roma” or just something amazingly well done like this movie and actually show ambition etc
      Well then truth be told that movie is TOO good for the oscars
      Because regardless we all know crap like “12 years a slave” and “green book” is gonna win regardless because it makes certain people feel better about themselves (aka people who feel guilty due to historical events that they weren’t alive to see nor do anything about and yet they feel guilty somehow and that guilt seems to overshadow the fact that the movie has nothing to say or offer)
      To me it’s starting to become more important to me that a movie don’t get taken seriously by the oscars as the ones I end up loving had no mention at the Oscar or such
      Like I just notice the most recent movie to win best picture like 12 years a slave and green book back in the day I had never heard of it before nor do I have any intention to watch it as the two previous ones left me with an empty feeling afterwards
      I look it up and I wonder what made it stand out? Well it turned out it was about deaf people and the cast are supposedly actually deaf in real life and that’s what made it stand out I suppose as the rest of it sounds rather uninteresting
      But another thing I noticed is that movies like “hillbilly elegy” that I honestly enjoyed more than most crap from Hollywood these days are often the movies that gets blamed for being “Oscar bait” or what not
      And yet the obvious Oscar bait like green book is praised and criticised far and wide and yet it’s forgotten about again and the controversy is never brought up again
      However hillbilly elegy will always be a primary example of modern Hollywood’s “Oscar bait” for years to come
      Here’s the thing though:
      One main criticism of that movie was that it didn’t follow the non-fiction book enough and showed an unreal and wrong version of the events and the society it portrayed supposedly
      Ron Howard the director also directed the movie “a Beautiful mind” back in the early 2000s which today is more or less already a modern classic However that one was actually mainly fiction despite being based on a real persons life
      Like I read that John Nash didn’t experience the many hallucinations in real life and another thing is that in one scene he claims he ain’t taking medicin but is recovering well
      And it turns out in real life he DID take medicine but they wanted people to know that recovery was also possible without medicine
      Other than that the marriage to his wife was a lot less beautiful in real life and much darker from what I know
      So why was that one never criticised for inaccuracies and wrong portrayal etc?
      Because it’s a good movie with a good story and honestly what more do you need? Movies aren’t supposed to be 100% gritty all the time
      I don’t care how dark and serious Hollywood can be as long as it means that occasionally stuff comes along that takes my mind off the horrors in the world
      I mean sure I know slavery is bad and yes I know the Russian invasion of Ukraine is killing innocents daily
      And here’s the thing about all that:
      I know it’s bad and it’s happening but rubbing it in my face constantly doesn’t make me care more or want to worry about something that I can do jack shit about
      And when I left the theatre after watching “Stan and Ollie” I was amazed by how moved I was and how I would never have seen it if my mother didn’t have free tickets and picked me to go along because she knows I loved Laurel and hardy as a kid
      But I laughed during the movie … Like genuinely laughed not like “haha” laughed like in a marvel flick but I actually laughed and felt sadness like a well made movie is supposed to do
      And when I walked out I didn’t talk about anything but how amazing it all was and I didn’t stop for months to talk about it and recommending it
      And then the day it came out on dvd my mother actually bought it for me because I loved it so much
      And ever since I started to ask myself “what happened??”
      Like what happened to movies like Stan and Ollie or even a beautiful mind that actually stayed with me after I left the theatre and I actually felt like watching again?
      They were killed by the oscars plain and simple
      And what is the oscars? A phony trophy that simply says the majority of idiots that feels guilty about some historical bullshit likes your movie
      But fifty shades of grey was a bestseller for a while and now it’s the butt of jokes and something that every serious reader despises
      That simply says to me that an Oscar or a best selling book don’t mean somethings automatically good it just means the majority likes it nothing else but it don’t mean that I alone will like it
      Ever heard the song “video killed the radio star”?
      Well the oscars killed the movie star
      Plain and simple
      And if you wanna watch something good then don’t watch anything with 2-3 oscars like 12 years a slave and green book
      If you wanna judge a movie by it’s amount of oscars then look at the ones with 4+ as in my experience it means it’s not pity oscars because those movies were good enough to win in multiple departments like costume design or sound design etc
      In other words they won because the people behind it (and not just the director or the writers) actually cares about this and that everyone seemed to actually do their best because this wasn’t some white guilt trip for once
      And last note: Don’t judge a movie by its rotten tomatoes score by critics
      Look at the audience instead
      If you still have doubts just look at the comment section on RUclips
      And yeah that sounds silly but you know what? I have found more modern favourites I would never have found otherwise because people like that can actually tell it straight sometimes if you need to know about a certain movie and if it’s your cup of tea or not

    I also was touched at how they held hands in this scene for the entire last 20 secs, even when the dance was over. Not just for the bow, but for their friendship. I really like how this movie was made not in the formulaic mold of typical biopics these days. It focused on a critical time in their relationship and used flashbacks and re-imagined old classic scenes (like The Music Box and the big heavy trunk) to tell the story.

    In my house growing up my dad rewarded me for good behavior by showing me laurel and hardy movies. He wasn't capable of showing a lot of affection so laurel and hardy sort of passed as love between he and I. He grew up watching them on tv and loved them and passed that on to me. Of course seeing their movies always feels like visiting old friends and its all tied together with my love for my dad too. He died 6 years ago and when I saw this movie I was a puddle at the end realizing how much he would have loved it.

How could such a magical masterpiece of a movie play in so few theaters and recieve such little recognition for a movie that truly is perfection? It just couldn't have been done better by anyone and John and Steve either one....flip a coin... should have been a no brainer best actor Oscar winner!
    Not enough swearing, screwing, or violence to catch most folks attention I would guess, but this really was in a class above all that.

    On our community school (high school) there was a tradition where the students that were leaving had a fancy dress day on the last day ahead of graduating. Me and a mate planned to dress as Laurel and Hardy about three years in advance. We rehearsed the dance many times to do a performance. Most of the other students didn't know who Laurel and Hardy were a when they went to school that day but they sure did going home.I had my suit crammed with cushions (I was Hardy because I'm taller) so it was hard to dance. Worth it to pay homage to an iconic duo. Rest in paradise Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy

      @JaCky,SuIOx Lest It was more BEcause of the timing of its release; moreover, those who choose the nominations are mostly not millenials, if that's what you mean by the "younger generation", and the films that were nominated were not gruesome or horror films. Blind prejudice against an entire generation is not an effective or accurate answer, nor helpful.
